Love the Peel Sessions. For every artist featured there is always a little different nuance in the Peel performances. No more so than in the case of the Cocteau Twins
I once met Liz's boyfriend's mum at a jazz gig. She told me that Liz sang in the bath. I asked if she ever sang "Strange Fruit"? She said, "No, why would she?" So I told her about this session, and asked her to request "Strange Fruit" the next time Liz was visiting.
Hi Peter. There are a lot of errors and omissions on the archived Peel pages on the BBC website. The most reliable sources are either Ken Garner's The Peel Sessions book or the Peel Wiki.
I have to credit this video with introducing me to Cocteau Twins and making me fall in love with them. I can't believe I never heard of them before finding this video.
Peel Sessions were generally recorded in a studio over a few hours. Some are genuinely live, many have overdubs. Some were recorded by the bands themselves at their own studios and sent in to the BBC, as this one was. A few were demos, at least one was taken from the bootleg of a gig and several use outakes or early workings from recordings for official albums. Most though were recorded at the BBC's studios, many done in one take, as live, many not!
Love the on-air comments from "Uncle John" - so bittersweet. He is so missed.
John, you freaking diamond of a bloke. How we all miss you. How music misses you. 😮💨
Credit is also due to KevH for recording this from the Peel Show and for sending the tape to myself to digitise it.

bizarre
@@AMSRMX16 More a co-incidence, than "bizarre", I think.
just speechless
I was working from the sessions listed on the John Peel archive site, so I missed this one. Thanks for finding and uploading it.

NameNotAlreadyTaken2 I recommend going down the Harold Budd rabbit hole very much
This is overwhelming beauty
I remember reading somewhere that John Peel developed a huge crush on Liz after hearing her sing in his studio.
Didn't we all, Sir !!! :-)
they just do something for me..memories of their stuff mark episodes in my life. Thanks.
This is wonderful.
vibracobra, keep up the great work!
Thanks to The Cobra.
How is Liz doubling her vocals? I thought this was live. Beautifully mixed!!!! Love me some Cocteau Twins!

That makes sense. John showcases demo tapes. Thanks for the history and especially for sharing this.
The guitars are also doubled, or more. They had at least a day to work out their session. Not live, exactly, but vital none the less.
reverb?
Stark beauty
So good.
