The "column" on the back of the button you found is called a shank. It's mostly used on thicker fabric, so when the button passes through the button hole, the button sits nicely on top. The shank can also be made from thread when the button is sewed on, but they are not as durable. Hope this helps.

Have you ever thought of getting old photos from the property owners and doing a then and now comparison? It could be quite interesting especially for locations where some historic events or gatherings took place...if they were photographed.

I'd just like to thank you Dan, you got me interested in metal detecting! I've watched nearly all of your videos and I love seeing you dig up military relics from the Second World War! I have even gone out into farmers fields and such in the area I live and found some pretty neat items! I'm proud to say that I am soon uploading my first two metal detecting videos! One day I would like to metal detect in Europe like you do and find all sorts of relics from WWII, as I have huge interests in that time period. But again, thank you for introducing me to the metal detecting world, Cheers! -Alex

that medallion or pendant could easily have been any of our founding fathers in America. Benjamin Franklin was HUGE! rock star famous in France during the 1700s, while the colonies fought for independence from England. he was over there alot, and we where considered inspirational fighting the British, and they loved that,so our founding fathers where held in high esteem back then.when George Washington died, there where commemorative coins made for his passing, which could easily be him,or Benjamin Franklin.i can see that having been taken over there considering his/their celebrity in those times.cheers

Question. You have all these large areas to scan. Here in States, we have a person with small lawn tractor hauling a 3-4 foot wide metal detection scanner for meteors. He just runs the entire acreage in strips, and listens for beeps, then digs down and gets his finds. Any options for you having a smaller detector on a rolling little red wagon, or such device?

Im afraid the franc was devalued back in 1949 so that by the time that 50 franc coin was minted the franc was running at about 1000 to the pound...making the equivalent UK value about a shilling (5p in decimal currency)

15:42 That is a fork handle, not a spoon. For the age, I think it is 1700's/1800's. So it is actually pretty old.
    17:20 Looks like a 5 Francs coin
21:19 That thing was already broken, that break seems to be old. It may be the reason why it was thrown away in the first place. Looks like a naked woman on there or something. Can't tell for sure though.

    • @nikolasc5467

Henry Savage Well, sometimes a soldier might be killed in action...very gruesomely, and so parts of uniform, buttons, medals, etc will be thrown everywhere. Too much stuff to pick up, so then it gets buried for 70 years until Dan finds it. It's really crazy cool if you think about it
