- In this video I will be giving my new Clam Quick Set Venture screen tent a thorough review, set up, and unbagging first opinion. If you're in the market for a new screen tent for camping this is a must watch before you buy video to get an up-close and personal view of the screen tent. I also review all of my big purchases before I buy, so I go over this pop up screen tent and show everything that was missing from the UA-cam videos I watched. I had a hard time choosing between the Gazelle G5 Gazebo and the Clam Quick Set, so I will cover the features and benefits that ultimately won out. We store this Clam tent in the back of a 2014 Airstream Interstate Sprinter van so space is an issue. We barely got this 5-sided tent to fit and we are glad we had room over the 4-sided version of the tent. This is a very helpful review. I have the Gazelle G6 and it was nice to see how its competitors measure up. While I think the Gazelle is probably a little overbuilt, the Clam has nice touches with the double zipper, rain protection, and built-in door poles. It's funny how you emphasized the door poles being integrated. My wife actually cracked a tooth trying to take down one of the door poles, she was bending it down from the top to remove the pole from the little pocket it's held in and when it came out, the tension whipped it right into her face with enough power to crack a tooth! It's the little things you don't think about that can matter quite a bit.

You can also use the loops on the hubs to stake it down using guy lines for when it is really windy.

Nice review. Very thorough. We bought the Clam Escape model a couple of years ago and really love it. Setup was a little weird the first time or two, but after you're familiar with it, it's a no brainer. Goes up and comes down really fast. Prior to this I had one of those big rectangular screen rooms with about 20-something metal poles and I always dreaded setting it up and taking it down. It literally took at least an hour to set up by myself because it was nearly impossible to have everything hold together on one side while trying to get the other side up, and it would continually collapse on the side I wasn't working on. That was one of the main reasons we wanted a Clam. And wow, what a difference. It's so easy.
One problem we encountered was when we camped in an area that had quite a few ground squirrels. Although we never cooked inside the Clam, we did eat in there a time or two but never left food inside. But there must have been some food odor or something, because overnight the squirrels tried to get inside by chewing on the ground flaps. They put several holes in them. If you're camping in an area with critters like that, it might be a good idea to take it down at night or leave it open so they don't try to chew through it to get inside.
If there's little or no wind, there's no need to stake it down. Definitely stake it down if you expect wind though. We've had it up in wind up to about 20 mph with it tied and staked down, and it did fine. I wouldn't want it up at all in wind much stronger than that though. The nice thing is that you can take it down very quickly if needed. We also got the 3-panel pack but rarely use those. They would be nice to block the view or a light wind from one direction though. It's also great in colder weather if you put a little heater inside, like an electric or propane one. I wouldn't want a wood fire inside though.

What a fun tent and I agree on the poles being built in being a major deciding factor!! We never have all of the poles!! We could buy a brand new tent and it would be missing a pole. Great review - can’t wait to see it become a gym!

user for one year. moderate winds wear the bottom of the connector points out by the scrapping against gravel, etc. put ground padding under each ground contact and secure with a stake or the fabric will wear away and the poles will stick through.

Now that you’ve been traveling with the clam for a few months have u been using it much? I have class B galleria so not much space in back behind sofa.
Hello. We do use the clam at almost every place we stay for more than a night or two. But, we really use it just to house our dumbbells and equalizer bars so we don't have to set them up every day for our work outs. We don't really sit in it much, and it hasn't rained much for us to work out in it. Funny enough we were just talking about getting the smaller 4 sided tent for more space in the back. As far as the Clam tent goes though, we really like the quality of it and the ease of set up and tear down. Like you said... not much storage in a class b. We really have to cram it in.
I heard if you step on the bottom of material and then pull out the side it works better...nice video!

Thanks! I think cooking in the larger 5 sided or 6 sided would be a lot more comfortable and safe. You could cook in the 4 sided, but it might be a little tight. Hope that helps. thanks for watching!

I got rained on thru the front door. I bought 5 side panels and the front door doesn't fit the velcro of a side panel. so how do I keep the rain out of the front door

Great video. Anyone know how this would hold up being up all summer on a patio? I would tie it to a fence
Thanks. We recently sold ours (do to space restraints while traveling after upgrading our electrical in the back), but it held up great after about 6 months of full time use, setting up and tearing down every time we moved. Looked pretty new still. I would think if you set it up all summer and then stored it in the off seasons it would last many years. Barring any crazy summer storms of course! If/when we repurchase I will stick with Clam.
I was just reading an Amazon review from a fulltime RVer who was work camping and had it set up about 8 months out of the year. They were complaining about holes developing in the material and the top becoming very dry and brittle 14 months after buying it. They got a response from a Clam representative who said these were not made to be left set up for that much time. He said they were made to be used for a few days to a few weeks at a time (presumably weekend or vacation use). He said the top has "some" UV resistance but leaving it up all the time would deteriorate the material over time. If you can set yours up in a shady area maybe it would be fine. Or possibly you could coat the roof with something that would improve the UV resistance, but I would imagine the mesh would deteriorate as well if in the sun all the time. I have had one for two years and love it, but we only use it occasionally.
I received mine today and quickly set it up. Easy to do. I was disappointed that this one did not come with the double zipper. I liked that idea for passing food in and out. Oh well not that big of a deal.

I bought a two entry entry screen tent that was crap through amazon thinking I could have an entry before we entered our camper only to find that it was to close to our outside bbq attached to our camper and the real problem was that it was very poorly made with inferior construction materials . I’m going to see which clam product I will purchase because of your sharing your review with me . One suggestion which is always a critical decision factor is how was it putting down and back in the bag ? Dan , your new subscriber .

Blazing Hot in the daytime really keeps the heat in BUT at night when it's cold a Little Buddy heater on low works great, I have the Pavilion
Nice! I was just in a pavilion over the weekend with a propane fireplace in the 40's overnight. Your right, it is nice and toasty at night! Tough in the sunshine with anything over the 70's.......
@@IreneIronTravels We are looking for a shade shelter to get out of the sun at the lake on hot days. 90 degrees plus. Keeping bugs out would also be a bonus. Do you feel this is any hotter than the cheap EZ up sun shelters without sides?
Yes, at 90 plus degrees this tent with sides will dramatically reduce the air flow and make it feel that much hotter in there. We were pretty comfortable to about 80 but then it gets pretty hot. But, it does work well for the bugs!

Yes, it's easy to move around when it's not staked down and the five-sided and bigger versions will fit over a picnic table. Just keep in mind that high winds will blow it over if not staked.

Can you give us an update on this tent, now that you've had it for 3 years? How has it held up? Any issues? I do wish the roof wasn't so translucent and provided more shade for camping in desert environments.
Also, how did you find the 9' size once you put in some chairs, table, cooler, etc? Did you ever wish it was bigger?
Because space is always a premium while RVing/camping, we sold this tent after a year and we actually bought a second one a bit later after selling our van. We spent last summer in a roof top tent (watch this to see how well it holds up ua-cam.com/video/bux8cQd324g/v-deo.html) and we used the Clam as an outdoor kitchen and place to work. We sold it after getting our RV... again for space and we just didn't use it as much anymore. I can say the roof does great for blocking the heat from the sun while letting in light. Its when the sun hits through the side screens that its hot. The side panels would help. The 9 foot size was always great for us ( 2 people ), but I could see others wanting more space if they have the room to store it and set it up.

No we never did get the floor.... we always just used one of our CGear mats and that worked great! Great tents!
Do I have to use “clam” walls or can I use the ones I have for square pop up, and why does clam sell walls in 3 instead of five?
Some other walls might work....but they can also be different sizes so you have to watch out for that. Clam sells them in 3 packs and 2 packs to cover it.

Hi...just wondering if you have ever used a propane heater or propane fire pit inside your clam. I was thinking maybe on a low setting it wouldn't be too hot to melt the fabric. Any experience with that? Thanks
We never used ours like that, but we do know a few people that do and love it. We were in there's one cold night with a propane fire pit and it worked really well to keep warm! 👍

It's easier to put the door poles in the pocket in the bottom before you slide the pole pieces together pieces together.

Hello! Yes, the pricing on these fluctuate I notice. If you've ever tried the Amazon Deals, you can save some money. They are basically open box returns that amazon sells on a discount. They have the 6 sided four 199. If you look underneath the add to cart( on the normal Amazon page) you will see a new and used option. Just make sure its sold by amazon warehouse. I've bought a lot over the years and its almost always brand new with damaged packaging. Amazon 30 day return policy works great if it shows up and you don't like it! The tent we love! It's holding up very well. Would work great for mosquitoes, but maybe not in the Florida summer. The mesh is fine so it keeps the bugs out, but the wind flow is also effected. We find it fine up to about 80 degrees. Works great for shade and light rain too!

I just purchased the Cabela branded 6 sided unit from Bass Pro in Ontario.......$599 Canadian. Has the window flaps attached. Pricey, but looks like a well built unit.

Congrats! We have bought and sold this tent twice since as we have space restraints. 😊 but we can setup in about 30 seconds! If we tie down and stake it takes another 5 - 10 minutes depending. Great tent… you’ll love it!

Hi. I've been reading that these tents get pretty hot and the mesh doesn't have much airflow... Have you experienced the tent trapping heat? I'm planning on using one in the desert as a shelter during motorcycle track days... I want something quick and easy to setup while not being a greenhouse.
Hello. It is true the mesh is fine and provides less airflow than some tents. We have been using it for the past 4 months or so and love it. As far as temps go, I personally find it comfortable up to about 80 degrees. Above that it gets pretty toasty! It is nice for shelter from the sun and also light rain.

You didn't read ANY of the directions? Ha. I have both; the Quick Set Clam and the Gazelle. The Clam is the best, by far. IMHO. I love the two zippered door. The Gazelle doesn't have that feature. The logoed hub; protects the mechanism.
Black stakes...good quality. Guy lines.
The screen is super tight. Awesome cold-weather insulation.
Did you keep the Clam when you moved out of the van?
Yes! If you go onto our channel you'll see our Roof Top tent days after we sold the van. We used it every day. We then got a travel trailer and used it less and less and finally sold it..
It is probably 45 seconds for an experienced user of it. I know I am much faster setting up my Eskimo 450XD pop up shelter the 3rd or 4th time than I was the first time. Same is true for pack up time.
Do you guys still carry?use this tent?
We ended up selling the tent after about a year when we added more batteries and a bigger inverter in the back of our van. No room for the tent, but it is a great tent and held up well.

Hello! We did sell the tent, but only because we upgraded our electrical system in the back storage area and no longer have room for the tent. I never really noticed the x's in the tent blocking my view. It does really feel open when you are inside. We ended up buying a
C gear sand free mat to use as the floor. If you're on grass I don't think a floor is necessary, but on gravel and dirt it was nice to have. The biggest complaints I have heard about these tents is the mesh is very fine and doesn't allow a great amount of air flow. It gets HOT in 80's and 90's! Overall we loved the tent for it's high grade construction and super easy set up and tear down! Thanks for watching!

@@mcse-nv2ou If space is a concern( or if you're a solo traveler) I would go with the smaller traveler as it packs and stores about 10 inches shorter. But, If you have the room, the venture will " feel" a lot larger with it being and a pentagon shape instead of a square. You can fit a full size picnic table in the venture, with enough room to sit and eat. We use it mainly as an outdoor workout room and the 4 sided would definitely not work for that. Also, if you plan on putting the rain/wind panels on, I would go with the dark brown that has the extra flaps on the roof. And why is the smaller one more expensive!!!!🤔

Yes! The price skyrocketed last year and has stayed up since camping products are in high demand. We ended up selling the tent last year only because we upgraded our electrical system in our van and didn't have room for the tent anymore in the back. Held up great though and see these tents all over the campgrounds while full time rving. Do recommend for sure!

I not sure about high winds... ,was just in drayton nd this harvest it was very windy where we lost our ez up ..
Theirs was the pavilion model. Sames as ours, but bigger and has the built insides. They are in a class A. Nice, but we don't have room for a bigger one in our van and its double the cost too. They also make a smaller 4 sided one too that our other fulltime van friends have and they love it. I think I put all the links in the video description... but we really like ours. You do need to stake it high winds, but it holds up fine. Also, be aware they get really hot in temps above 80....... But, all in all great tent. Doubles our living space in a van!
I want to set mine on fire. The spouse was supposed to come home with a smaller model, BUT NO! The thing is gigantic and two of us haven't set it up yet. There is not a handle on but on side for pulling and its underneath the screen.
My carry bag is definitely not waterproof.

I bought a Clam 12x12. This week the anchor tabs ripped off every spot in a wind storm. I called customer Serb vice and they told me these are not to be left up in weather or unattended. I asked what are they meant to shelter if not weather. No answer. I asked if I was in it and it started to rain they would expect me to take it down in the rain. They said yes. Do not buy this product.
