  • This is for the 22lr short barrel self defense community. I have performed some extensive gel testing where I stack up some of the best 22lr cartridges in production. Thanks goes out to Shooting the Bull and Lucky Gunner for guiding me through the years. Enjoy and let me know which round you would go with for your EDC.

CCI Velocitors get my vote, especially out of a 10/22. Mini-Mag’s and Stingers are awesome too. As a civilian for self defense I feel pretty safe with a good .22LR Rifle/Pistol and some CCI Ammo.

Your stingers do not look like stingers. A real stinger has a nickel case, where yours, in the video seem to just be brass. Also, the stinger case is longer than all of the others, so the Punch is not just a stinger case with a lighter bullet. Make sure someone did not swap out your ammo for theirs and leave you some regular mini mags for your stingers. I have a newer box and have shot them for over 40 years, and that stinger brass is supposed to be nickle plated.

I'm getting the 22LR S & W 43C revolver. Super light at 11.5 ounces fully loaded / snub nose / that is easy to carry without showing. I have 2 semi auto pistols used at the range a Ruger SR22 & a Taurus TX 22. Both shoot really well after many rounds thru them. So far the Ruger had one round that failed to fire & blocked the chamber. The Taurus TX 22 had no failures in about 500 rounds thru each. The revolver trade off is number of rounds for reliability. Any misfire just pull the trigger again as the chamber rotates.

@@Thomas-to5dr The thing about the 43C Air Lite is its footprint & light weight. As a little concealed carry its hard to beat with reliable 22LR ammo. It took awhile at the range to get my shots where I wanted. Big White Dot sight is a plus. Trigger pull was a little stout but there is the Wilson Combat trigger kit that has 3 different springs to adjust to that pull. With the lightest spring tension it didn't like the cheap bulk Remington or Browning ammo. Had 30% FTF. Going to the middle spring tension improved it to 10% FTF with bulk ammo. I have the CCI Mini Mags ready for the next trip at the range. I expect much better results.

I also have the LCR in 22lr. I typically carry Velocitors in the gun. I tried shooting the Federal Punch, but they are a bitch to extract from the cylinder after being shot. It seems as though the casing is just a hair larger than other 22lr ammo. Over the years, I've shot just about every 22lr ammo out there and the problem only happens with the Federal Punch. Not a problem for my first 8 shots, but if I had to reload in a hurry, it would be. However, they work fine out of my Ruger Mark III semi-auto.

I've always recommended velocitors to people that want to carry 22lr. Good to see yet another test backing up my recommendation! Punch seems like a good second choice though. I occasionally carry a Kel-Tec P17 and use punch in it since I figure that the longer barrel may get velocitors to open up and underpenetrate plus the added velocity can only help the solid punch bullets. Regardless, 22lr is a pretty underrated carry round imo. It certainly isn't very powerful, but something like a Taurus TX22 with a light, red dot, and maybe a suppresor would be a scary house gun option. No recoil, instant follow up shots, and cheap ammo that allows one to really get a lot of practice aren't anything to scoff at.

My opinion is that compare to other calibers, .22 is not particularly great for self defense. It makes smaller holes after all. However I do think it is good ENOUGH for self defense. It still put holes inside the target and at the end of the day shot placement is most important. All in all this was an excellent video. Thanks for sharing.

  • @pickin4you
    @pickin4you 2 роки тому +4

Let me give you some of my 60 years of experience. I see everyone looking for that magic bullet that has the most penetration. Why? So you all want the bullet to pass through and maybe hurt or kill an innocent person standing beyond the one you might have to shoot at? What you need to be looking for is one with decent penetration, not too much, but with the largest would cavity. That one will hurt the most and make them bleed more. Stop looking for the one the passes through as you do not want to kill maybe a baby on the mother’s arms standing 50’ behind the person you are trying to control with that shot. Be careful what the wish for.
Also, all handguns are pistols. The revolver was and still is the original pistol. They are both pistols. If you need to define them, three use the proper terms like revolver and semi auto. A pistol is any handgun, and that could even be a T/C Contender single shot pistol.
On first pass, to me, the Mini Mag HP’s had the best and most dramatic wound channel. I have seen and know many who shoot the Mexico made ammo, and I am not at all impressed. You also want to pick the most accurate ammo for that gun. If you cannot hit what your aiming it, no matter how the ammo tests in he, it does you no good what so ever. You may as well be carrying a stick. Just be smart. Find the most accurate and best would channel ammo that works well in YOUR gun.

Barely any recoil and lightweight is great for the Ruger LCR. Also, i did get stuck shell casings from Winchester bulk.22 at range. What i did was use a polymer.22 brush in each of the 8 ports on the cycling and Then added some Birchwood Casey oil in each again, and this helps tremendously to eject all 8 , from cylinder. Basically just keeping cylinder ports clean from blast powder of each time fired, it builds up over time, especially on .22 revolver.

Thanks for watching Ez E! Yeah that would be interesting to test too. From the videos I've seen of this round, I wouldn't recommend it for self defense because it shed's so much weight before penetrating around 12-13 inches. It would work, but for a two legged criminal you want as much mass and bullet weight penetrating the furthest to actually stop an attack. The 3 shrapnel parts breaking off between 3-4 inches would hurt and cause more bleeding, but it would not stop an attack with a CNS hit.

@@breakcontact . A 22lr probably won't lay someone flat anyway(yes I know they can be lethal. It's why I'm even here commenting.) But I've also seen those videos. And the wound channels and fragments. Of the silvertips. Might be a compromise against the mass of final piece. Plus the final piece flattens more. Out of all the 22lr hollow points out of a pistol. Silvertips do what they are supposed too. . I have velocitors and silvertips. . But the velocitors I had to order from cci. Silvertips I found locally. So I kinda like the silvertips so I'm personally carrying them . Couldn't find any punch.(they did well in other videos for penetration). Mabey alternate sivertips and velocitors in my mag. And double tap.

Too bad about the silvertip, but I agree that the 22 version kinda sucks.
The NAME has a stellar history, however.
For years, I used the 130 gr silvertip in .270 for elk. Brought down dozens with one shot each.....but never shot at a moving animal.

I believe Lucky gunner used the same revolver for his 22lr test. I was curious why his results were so much shorter than yours for the velocitors? I am planning on carrying a .22 and have been trying to figure out some of the discrepancies in these tests. Any insight or something I’ve missed? Thank you for the very thorough test!

Great question. I wouldn't put too much focus on the exact distance discrepancy. It's like weighing yourself on different scales. I forgot the distance in that test, but I think it still met FBI penetration standards. Also, I put a lot of rounds into the gel and I forget how many he did. Do you remember the amount of rounds was fired in gel? Also, keep in mind the temperature, humidity affects the gel. Also the kind of gel, I used Clear Ballistics. Not sure if they made their own gel or if it was Clear Ballistics. Even the batches from them can be different from one another.

From what I see the stinger and a few others will fragment semi reliably 1 to 2 chips and 3rd being main bulk. The winchester 37 gr varmint HE from snub actually reliably expands from .22 to .25 which was notable as it was only one to get expansion at all in lucky gunnes testing of snub 22lr with 7 ammo types tested. Longer barrels HP or segmented stuff works better, in snub most stuff performs like a round tip. Stays .22 barely changes at all vs unfired round in gel tests. Even the holllow points

Round sure is legal Grumpy! After shooting a lot more of the "mystery round", which is the 42 grain lead round nose Eley Force, they unfortunately designed the case so thin that they expand the very end of them (forming a bulge) and they lock up the cylinder and it gets to a point where you can't pull the trigger. I do NOT recommend them for self defense out of an LCR because of this. Disappointing.

As well as almost every cartridge considered a "pistol" round has been chambered in a rifle. see semantics.
That being said here is a list of pistols (not complete or conclusive) that can fire what are normally considered rifle rounds.

Why on earth would you carry 22lr when 9mm is readily available? I can't wrap my head around it. Do you want the guy to live? You will be paying his medical bills and for his disabilities if he does regardless of the fact that he was the aggressor.
My home was broken into one night years ago while I was asleep. After I woke up and racked my 870 the three ppl (2 guys 1 girl) leaped through windows to escape. Called 911 and after almost 2 hours of waiting because of a dispute on whether my house in the city or county, (city police hq was 1 mile away.. 🤔 county arrived and took pictures. The deputy explained to me that I was well within my rights to kill them all as long as they were in my house. He added that I needed to make sure that they were dead as it would be less paperwork for him and that I wouldn't get sued if they survived.
I respect that cop. It was years ago but I haven't met many like him since that time.

Your comment is absurd. Based on statistics, the 22lr has more stopping power than all other rounds. 70% stopped with 1 round to the center chest or head. The caliber debate is ridiculous. If you are a police officer or military, by all means go with a 9mm. Most civilians and especially woman do not train enough to master a 9mm. I have seen so many at the range scared shitless and completely unable to handle the gun. So many gun salesman do a great disservice with their idiotic opinion that unless you have a 9mm, you might as well carry a stick. Bullox. One should only carry a gun and caliber that they can shoot fast and accurate. Opinions should be based on real world evidence. ua-cam.com/video/nycYxb-zNwc/v-deo.html

I prefer to have my projectile stop in the perp so they have to seek some sort of medical help if they should out do me. You need to understand how much pass threw can cost you in the end, everything you own or ever will own in many cases. Disruption is what you really want, the more the better, I carry a 22 magnum varmint round in my 1.75 barreled revolver. You obviously don't understand the gel test. Just because a round can go 12" or more through gel doesn't mean it will go that far through a human. Your fragmenting varmint round is a bad choice. It won't penetrate to the vitals of a human most likely.
