- Six Eurofighter Typhoon Performance Take Offs (PTO) at QRA Station, RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. There was a change of runway so you can see both perspectives on the day.
Performance departures at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned as the Lightning would climb and accelerate vertically within seconds. Count how many seconds it takes for the Typhoon to not ONLY get airborne, but when it pulls back to accelerate vertically.
Both the Typhoon and English Electric Lightning had similar performance where the thrust to weight ratios of both aircraft were a 1:1 ratio, allowing the aircraft to accelerate vertically. The Lbs of thrust produced from the aircraft was more than the weight in Lbs of the aircraft. Of course, the more payload, the less acceleration, but with this sort of power, it doesn't bother them too much.
Aircraft have to request a Performance departure, they are not allowed to execute it without the clearance from ATC. There are many reasons for PTO, such as a short runway, clear aircraft traffic, barriers, problems on runway, or even just to get to somewhere fast.
Reheats or Afterburners?
Both are the same thing but “Afterburners” is a US term and “Reheats” is a UK term.

Jolly good show RAF Coningsby! PTO way to go! "Reheat my fire, our Typhoons are our only desire"...Take That!! Jaw drops every time. Digestives smashed at the tail end of the Typhoons everytime. A tip: crews best to take gummy bears, they'll still be in one piece when you return to base 😁😜! Brilliant.

Each and every PTO is as good as the last. Difficult to pick the best out of these. Fantastic noise though. Typhoons make you smile. Thanks to our RAF at Coningsby, our wonderful pilots and crown crew. Looking forward to more in 2024. Ted will be making the calls. 😉

Oii Oii Ted & Nikos, great compilation once again. PTO's really are amazing to watch. When you see them "live", it still surprises me as to how quick they are airborne and clear of the runway tarmac! True power from those Rolls Royce engines!
