  • "I'm going straight up!", a fighter pilot gestures to the camera before hitting the afterburners, shooting along the runway and climbing straight up into the sky.
At RAF Coningsby pilots of the Eurofighter Typhoons sometimes put on a show for plane spotters by performing vertical climbs straight up into the sky.
While it's an impressive show, it's important these elite pilots practice these high performance maneuvers to react to threats where they may have to engage enemy aircraft in combat.
The Lincolnshire RAF base is home to a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) element of the Royal Air Force, maintaining weapon-ready fighters capable of deploying at super-sonic speeds to intercept threats in NATO air-space at a moments notice.

Awsome, obviously practicing quick alert. One of these buzzed me in north Yorkshire on its way up into the mountains when I was walking. I hit the ground like a sack of spuds.

That's one of the reasons it's one of the best fighters in the world. No other airframe has better kinetic energy than the Typhoon.

Look at what's coming out of those engines... And how short a time they take - and how close to the ground they are - before they're vertical (with engines pointed groundwards).
Why do you think Coningsby holds the record for hottest place in the UK?
Is It: (A) Climate Change? Or (B) Aircraft?
Wonder why the vast majority of the top temperatures on the hottest day Britain has ever seen came from villages right by airports.
Sometimes at the end of runways.

"At RAF Coningsby pilots of the Eurofighter Typhoons sometimes put on a show for plane spotters by performing vertical climbs straight up into the sky."
No? They don´t do a show for plane spotters, because an unrestricted climb involves coordination with all air traffic controllers for all airspaces above the airfield. The airspace has to be free to prevent any conflicts with other traffic. Nobody will do this to do "a show" to impress some guys leaning on a fence. 🤦‍♂

"Very nice shootings", as Greta would say. And talking of monotones, what have they done to the aircraft paint scheme ?
Gave Squadron Leader Pead a belated virtual wave back . . . Don't them Tiffies climb well . Beds and soft furnishings, crockery and kichen ware , ladies underwear . . Going-up !
Anybody know what function the horizontal strakes just aft of the pilot position perform ? Are they meant to counteract roll when the pilot waggles the foreplanes ?

I laughed most when XH558 moved in and started doing display practice, those 4 RR Olympus engines at full power with that iconic howl. I miss seeing that old girl stretch her wings.
