He underestimates just how naturally funny they are, they don't have to try or be "on", the best part of both of their channels is they're entertaining without trying too hard. Maybe the episode wasn't as funny or maybe the topics weren't as fun for him to discuss but I was certainly entertained & did laugh, every episode is different & that's ok. I understand them not wanting to continue these if they no longer enjoy recording them but I selfishly really hope we're nowhere near the end of the podcast cuz I really look forward to these.

They definitely misrepresented their product through the ads they allowed UA-camrs to run. Words like “official”, “legal”, and “real” would give people the impression they are buying more than just a novelty “name a star, donate to charity” type gift. If not illegal per se, wholly irresponsible.

I'd say it's likely more a scam than is being talked about because everyone focused on the lord/lady thing -- and focused on "sillyness" of what likely small minority of folk that thought it made them royalty vs. the more common comment that thought it gave them the legal right to use the title Lord/Lady that they otherwise would not have -- and not researching more into their other claims
      - According to a land blogger/researcher (Andy Wightman iirc) who looked at the land records, they only own 55.7 acres that only cost them 37k pounds. (which is under 2.5mil "1 square foot plots") -- they claim hundreds of acres of land
      - There's no figures on exactly how many customers they had, e.g. how many plots sold
      - to find plot coordinates, need to separately contact them with email + plot number
      - The 2mill trees planted figure is from December 2021 (per waybackmachine) via one charity (trees for future), who's average cost per "tree" is *25 cents* (they provide education and seeds, not clear when a tree is considered a tree)
      - The 2mil trees planted figure was on their website in Dec 2021 but was replaced with "Over 42k pounds donated", so... did it cost them 500k$ or a lot less to plant those 2mil trees...? o.O
      - The other tree charity is one tree planted is 1$ a tree individual rate but no figures on how many planted via them
      - They have an 8$ monthly plant *one* tree "pledge" that is autochecked by default but ... 25 cents to a dollar for a tree with the charities they work with
      - 50$ is the average min price, but plots went up to 300$+ on the assumption it was really helping, or 100$+ to get a physical framed certifake
      - See Lady of Library's video on a Scottish perspective on why this is culturally insensitive /not helpful
      - Tree planting can not help the ecosystem if done badly, see various deep dives on this on youtube
So it's likely they aren't preserving they land they are, they are overall not looked as helping per Scottish commentors, it looks like barely any money (compared to how much they raised) are going to help the world, despite that being a key part of their sell.
The thing about youtuber creators is that information about this being a scam is years old as this has been a scam, so most youtubers either didn't care or aren't considerate of their users money -- which considering how many people are struggling, that's uggh.
On they saying this isn't harmful (in the podcast): it is, see LegalEagle's end of video take on this -- it wasted a lot of money that people thought were giving to a "good cause" that could have gone directly to help the world, and it's broken a lot of trust of viewers in sponsorships, making it harder for more legit sponsors/creators to make money.

To offer a take from someone who has used Established Titles as a customer, my husband surprised me at the end of our wedding ceremony with this so we were pronounced Lord and Lady rather than Mr and Mrs, which I loved. For context, the wedding vibe was fantasy/medieval so it suited us, and now it's become a really fun and silly inside joke for us and everyone who was at our wedding.

I think Simply was trying to talk about how in the past, if a content creator had a sponsorship they might get a lot of shit from their fans for "selling out". There has been a large shift though in subscribers wanting creators to do well and make money and they seem to understand that they might need to take a sponsorship to create quality content.
I think this community that Simply as created understands this that she only does things that she cares about because we have a level of trust with her and the opinions she gives.

A gag gift is something that is an obvious joke to both the giver and receiver. Something they can laugh at together.
    A scam is deliberately deceitful.
I never got an established title, but I'm not comfortable with how the conversation has been turning toward the people who believed the advertisements and purchased what they thought was a really cool gift.
Many won't care, but it's probably making a lot of thoughtful people now feel embarrassed or ashamed for "falling for" a trick.
Fifty dollars is a lot of money to a lot of people, and it seems like we're taking the heat off of the company who was taking advantage of customers who believed the UA-camrs they watch regularly.
I'm not saying customers thought they could travel to Scotland and everybody would start calling them Lord or Lady, but a lot of the advertisements were very specifically pointing out an actual, physical plot of land that you would own and saying your plot is near my (the UA-camr's) plot.
So, if they don't own that square meter or foot of land or whatever, and a tree is not planted on it, then a lot of people have been scammed, and that's not okay just because the consumers didn't have the education or experience level to know the advertisements were false.
(And those who did think they would technically be a Lord on paper shouldn't be ashamed either because company spent millions(?) of dollars making that the main talking point through hundreds of UA-camrs.)

If someone states the fact that lords are simply land owners, I'd believe it. Why not? It's not my area of expertise. If someone claims it's theirs, I tend to believe them until given indications to doubt.

I find it disingenuous when people (usually those who’ve taken sponsorships from Established Titles previously) claim it was always advertised as a gag gift and nothing more. Before this controversy I saw many sponsorships that claimed things like:
    - it uses a “legal loophole” that made you an “official” lord (completely false)
    - the plot of land you buy (which doesn’t exist) will be placed near the sponsored youtuber’s plot
    - that a tree was going to be planted directly on your lot (not that the money was simply going to a tree planting charity).
This wasn’t just dumb people thinking a gag gift gave you real land and a legal title, that’s exactly what it was advertised to do. These claims I saw first hand weren’t from small UA-camrs either, I think the company should be liable for letting them false advertise on their behalf.

Established Titles thing- So many people who saw through the promise go straight to the name a star stuff, but here's the thing: Name a star doesn't promise astronomers will use that name. They say you get a card about "your" star. WFF adopt a baby animal doesn't claim they're sending you a baby animal to take care of, they say you're getting this plushie stand-in. ET said "you officially become a lord or lady." They originally claimed you could use your title on your passport (and have backpedalled hard on that now.) ET was making promises that sounded vaguely reasonable (a meaningless title could reasonably be that cheap) with very promising language. That's the scam part. I'm not mad at the channels that took the sponsorships (except the ones who angrily defended themselves and mocked those who didn't clock the gimmick) but I do think ET is making far too much money off of a poorly worded gimmick.

I'm glad I don't word my emails this way anymore (I was literally given templates like these to use LOL) and I think more people with platforms should voice their opinion on partnerships, etiquette, and such so brands can learn how the industry is changing. There is an extension called sponsor block which blocks sponsors in the video. It’s more or a less a consequence of constant ads that are often not relevant to the content you are watching. Also about the monarchy, it’s essentially a collective delusion around grandeur.

Well, at least there's something real behind it. Even if the top title is mostly ceremonial these days. 2 German royal families recently were in the news in relation to an attempt to restore actual power. The family that used to have all the power refused to participate, but a disowned member of another family allegedly tried to become Emperor, but was simply arrested instead.

I'm answering for the data. I skip all ad reads. I hate when youtubers imbed actual content into the ads because I miss out, but I hate being advertised to since 9 times out of 10 it isn't a good company to give your money to. I also use ad blockers because I prefer to support people directly. ex: I buy holo taco instead of sitting through unrelated ads.

About ad reads, I always listen to podcasts or watch youtube while doing something else like working, exercising, cleaning, crocheting, etc. So I just tune out the ads instead of skipping them. However, I do tend to pay attention if it's a product or service I don't usually hear about from other creators. Like Square Space and June's Journey? Pay zero attention to that. But if it's like idk a Lysol ad read? That'll get my attention.

I like it when a creator is transparent about their advertising from the standpoint of either it’s clearly something that’s relevant to the audience and they’ve repeatedly vetted or somewhat unrelated to the content but vetted as a decent company. A lot of the tech channels are really good about listening to the audience and market and will dump a sponsor in a heart beat if they’re screwing their listeners. LTT just dumped Anker over the Eufy privacy scandal. That was not an insignificant drop!

Why does everyone only focus on the title aspect of established titles, which wasn't the only aspect of the scam? They weren't purchasing any land for preservation as they claimed and the organizations they worked with to plant the trees currently don't work in Scotland. The whole point was based on preserving Scottish wild areas but that wasn't happening. Even if the false title was the only thing, they were advertising people to put this on financial records like CC applications. I doubt anyone could actually get in trouble for this as the CC agency would say no if it wasn't allowed but their advertising made it clear they wanted people to think this was real. It is cool that the company was donating money to other charities but that doesn't mean they aren't a scam.

She was so excited, believing she had the perfect Christmas gift only to be let down when we explained it to her and having to shuffle last minute for an actual gift all over again. She would have likely thought owning a star is a scam because no one does, but I can see how she believed the title scam is more legitimate because people do own land and titles.
