It bothers me that’s this wasn’t set in the 80s, it fits those vibes completely. Werewolves, a locally famous family on the decline, the summer camp vibes, the lack of phones.
It never made sense to be set in modern times, cause most of those elements don’t exist nowadays; freak shows, and summer camps

    • @No-nt3vj
      @No-nt3vj 4 місяці тому

Summer camps still exist to this day but most of them aren't actual summer camps but literally torture camps where children are sent to be r*ped and abused by the counsellors who promised the parents to help their children but this also mostly happens in America so

    • @Sol-Orion
      @Sol-Orion 4 місяці тому +374

I kinda like that it wasn't set during the 80s. It's so clearly inspired by the typical "werewolf summer camp" story that it would feel even more like it was copying someone else's homework if it was set in the 80s.
I feel certain that summer camps still exist. Freak shows, on the other hand, I just have to suspend disbelief a bit. If I have to accept the existence of werewolves, I can accept the existence of a freakshow in 2020. (After looking it up, the freakshow fire and everything happened in 2014.)

One thing that I actually really liked about Max is he's the only werewolf in the game i think who sees the aftermath of what he's done
If you got Emma and Jacob killed on the island he finds there bodies and is rightfully horrified and even apologises to their bodies which I thought was really nice characterisation for him

I think the final nail in the coffin for The Quarry was the ending.
Whereas Until Dawn has all the surviving characters be interviewed and even gives some of them special dialogue depending on the choices you make or if they're solo survivors. The Quarry just hits you with a quick cut over who lived, who got infected, who died aaaand then it's the same ending every single time with only the final bit changing depending on if you got enough clues or not.
Imagine saving all characters and then be told that they're all going to jail in the most underwhelming conclusion to the story ever. That's pretty frustrating. I really hope they don't botch the ending in their next game.

Their brand of making Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Movies is something I love and even if they haven't made any that are good since, I'll still be hoping they nail it eventually. @@RatatTalksEvery game I've heard about from Supermassive makes me think they're just the worst. Like actively choosing the most offensive depictions of marginalized people possible. I watched a playthrough of Little Hope, and I didn't realize at first it was the same people that made Until Dawn. The whole time I was thinking it was going to be a supernatural horror about the cycle of trauma and that the winning criteria would be to break the cycle. Nope. It's just one man trapped in his own mind hallucinating the whole game. What a disappointing twist and a horrible depiction of mental illness. Many of the potential outcomes involve "self-deletion" with no warning, notice, or way to know that was an ending.

One thing I didn’t like about The Quarry was the very little use of the setting in the story telling.
In Until Dawn, we’re given a lot of history and context as to why the events have happened on Blackwood Mountain. Why a mountain? It’s because the Washingtons have a vacation lodge, and the characters are having a party up there. Why are there native items everywhere? The Native Americans used to live on it. Why are there mines? Miners were excavating for resources back in the 50’s. Why is there a Sanatorium? Scientists were running experiments on humans turning Wendigo. Why are there multiple Wendigos? Those were the miners. How was it that Hannah was never found? She got stuck and lost in the mines.
Compare this to the Quarry. The quarry itself isn’t even seen until later on, and we spend most of the time in the woods or at camp. The Hackett’s family used to be moonshiners, which is cool but not at all relevant to the story. The werewolves are a result of a freak show coming into town so the threat came from outside. Where? Why hasn’t anyone heard of them bringing a werewolf boy until now? The Hackett’s mansion is there because they just live there. The camp is there for the family to make money off it, and they use it to fund the camp as well as their hunting. They also just happen to have a junkyard.
Until Dawn really goes into depth on the setting, and does a good job of meshing it into the story. The Quarry does the same thing, just not on the same level or degree that Until Dawn had.

    • @RatatTalks
      @RatatTalks  4 місяці тому +157

Hard agree, there's so much info about the Hacketts businesses, but almost none of it actually means anything. The tunnels feel really dumb because nothing happens in them, they could at least have a werewolf chase down there if nothing else.

    • @trevordavis6830
      @trevordavis6830 3 місяці тому +73

Not just that, but another thing that’s great about Until Dawn is the multiple layers of history built into the setting. It’s not like Wendigos and everything surrounding them suddenly became a thing within the last few years. The wendigos being a mystical force has been in the mountain for centuries. The mining excavation only happened a few decades ago, with the following decade bringing the sanatorium to experiment on the wendigo miners. And the vacation lodge itself has only been built within the last decade or so. It gives the setting a very organic and realistic feeling that makes you really want delve deep into its mysteries and figure out the chronological timeline of events.
The Quarry on the other hand literally has everything that matters happen within the last 6 years, including the circus wolf boy event that no one else has ever heard of besides the Hackett family. It removes a lot of the mystic and intrigue from the setting and makes most of the information you can find about it feel artificial and meaningless.

right off the bat i can imagine stirring up ideas about the impact of blowing quarry on the environment around them. the wealth, luxury, and old money born of probable mistreatment/abuse of workers throughout history to gain it. a werewolf fits beautifully in with that as the environment's local wildlife and fauna don't just suffer, but the people/werewolves too, since we're all apart of the same world, though people try to dominate and control nature.
a lot of good shit to work with that's not even considered. and i JUST thought this up

  • @ripceridart

i think supermassive's biggest mistake was bringing laura back. max being present as the werewolf on the island is one thing because he doesn't affect the actual plot other than briefly as an enemy, but the minute laura becomes a playable character past the prologue, most of the characters lose any importance in the story. it felt like ryan and kaitlyn were set up in the beginning to be the main protagonists the way that sam and mike are the 'main characters' of until dawn. but laura has a gun so she can fight, which negates kaitlyn's main thing we are shown she's particularly good at. laura also knows what's going on with the hacketts (mostly) which negates ryan's role as the detective as after that it doesn't feel like there is any drive for him (or anyone tbh) to be figuring out the mystery anymore.
ryan's character in particular gets nuked when laura comes back because he basically just becomes her sidekick and any arcs he had with other characters (mainly kaitlyn and dylan) get dropped. part of why the latter half of the game feels so rushed and unsatisfying to me.
i think maybe she could have been hidden away or imprisoned somewhere in the hackett house based on player choices in the prologue, and you could unlock her as a playable character if you spent some time searching around and rescued her?? but having her just appear randomly halfway through with an eyepatch and a shotgun felt like a bit of a deus ex machina lol.

Maybe smarter minds could figure it out but I see no way to make a long playable flashback work with a choice based game like this. None of the choices leading to that part can matter because it’s in the past so the parts we’ve already played (the future of the flashback) can’t affect the past and all the choices during the flashback can’t affect the future because we’ve already seen how the future plays out.

I remember when the first hour of gameplay was revealed before the game came out. I saw it and was so hyped and also assumed, "Oh, these 2 random characters with minor ties to the main cast are gonna be the Hannah and Beth of the game. You play as them briefly in the intro to kick off the beginning horror movie kill/hook, and then we only see them later as either dead or the monster. It would have worked as well because of the fact that it would have added to the mystery of why counselors were gone and directly correlated to their impact in the game WITHOUT taking away from the main cast. What horror movie with similar tropes has the beginning kill or mystery disappearance return to the story AND be a badass AND become practically the main character of the story? It was bound to hinder the other characters.

I'm pretty sure Nick is not supposed to be a predator or an asshole, and that the writers want us to blame his later behaviour on the transformation and that not being him really, I think they just wanted to shock us by slowly transforming an innocent introverted boy into this creepy dude who says the girl he likes is easy, but this contradicts the way the other characters act during their own transformations, so IMO its probably just bad and inconsistent writing and thats not actually how we're supposed to see Nick's character

Yeah, I did try not to force my opinion here because like I said, Nick wasn't aware of what was happening, and almost everything about his and Abbys arc doesn't feel intentional. Nick could easily just be a random dude who got a bit too evil off the wolf juice.

Just a thought but during the flashback with Max and Laura in prison, while Max is ready to transform in front of the handcuffed Laura, you have a choice on her to be empathetic to him or to be clinical and straight up start asking him medical questions. If you choose the clinical approach Max will lash out at Laura calling her a b*tch. So I think it also depends on the way others treat or talk to the "ready-to-turn" infected person. Like if their words are triggering for the person and the "soon to be" transformation enhances their violent reaction.

I think part of the problem with The Quarry was the video game necessity of having to have scenarios where characters can die early, but then the rest of the story can still play out. It's one of the reasons why Abi feels like she has nothing to do for the entire back half of the game, because I think the devs expect players to let her die early. It's the reason why Laura comes in and becomes such a main character halfway through, so that the story can continue if you've killed off the other characters. I think if Supermassive wants to make a better game going forward, they need to have stronger story branches where a scene can play out multiple ways depending on which characters are alive, rather than just cutting scenes if the character is dead, and have longer term consequences, so that you can still have actions that have serious consequences, but don't completely remove a character from the story right away.

This is such a fantastic point, you're absolutely right. Thank you for putting it into words. I really wish SMG would just write a beautiful story and beautiful characters and then NOT fuck it all up by trying to make everything possible at all times. "Pick one thing and stick with it, yeah?" or whatever Ratat said in his Little Hope video... They could write how meaningful characters' possible deaths are to all the others, into this one story, having everything stay connected so you still have the whole game feeling contiguous and not really slow one moment and really quick the next moment (also something he mentioned in the Little Hope video)... I absolutely love The Quarry because I love the characters, because of the way they are played, I got so attached to them, that part is wonderful, but man, the game itself is really just not very good...

Supermassive urgently needs a better team of writers. The current ones keep throwing in stupid events that impact the story in nonsensical ways. Like when the dude reaches for the cable and somehow gets his hand bitten off camera. Some choices feel like "you like cheesecake or chocolate cake? Chocolate? Wrong, your character is now dead because if you choose that, a werewolf mauls him to death, don't ask how it relates"

it’s the cage puzzle that gets to me the most. we are given no indication of how to complete it, no ability to check the door numbers, and if you get it wrong then it’s instant death for jacob. it’s obvious that they had no idea what else to do with him after that point in the story, so just decide to raise the stakes by making his death nearly certain.

@@blue-sq7tj It's a consistent weakness in supermassive writing.
As soon as a character can die, they basically stop being relevant. As another commenter pointed out, Laura being brought in in chapter 7 is probably exactly because this time, they made many characters killable super early.
And I think Jacob was supposed to be the guy everyone will hate because he did the fuck up in the beginning (hence his complete irrelevance to most of the story and his multiple gruesome kills) while everyone was supposed to like Ryan... when now, it feels like people feel sorry for Jacob and can't stand Ryan.

I think they need a writing team in general. A cursory glance at the writers of each game reveals that the only consistently re-occurring writer working on Supermassive projects is Graham Reznick
Heck, maybe they should try to have only ONE writer for each project, at least for their shorter Anthology episodes, considering the one game most people like, House of Ashes, is literally the only thing Supermassive has put out with just one credited writer.

TBH, Dylan as his quirky character is the only reason I kept playing this game.
The following are confirmed list of deleted scenes but already has full voice dialoguesa
Good premise, but it was revealed that Zach Tinker, the Jock guy revealed that there are so many deleted scenes.
    1. Jacob and Emma when scouting for supplies, there was actually intended longer lockpicking route multiple times. The indoor of the merch ship where both of them hunt for supplies looked like a maze because there was actually a creature inside and they have to sneak their way in with longer convo. Zach Tinker (voice actor of Jacob) showed manuscript on his TWITCH channel revealing all recorded voice lines
    2. Abigail and Nick have longer conversations and interaction when walking through rocky road stuff which explains the disparity and sudden cut of dialogues as well as sunset in the background
    3. Dylan has more exposure in the radio shack that was cut off and removed. When abigail visits the radio shack for the first time, dialogues and scenes of dylan were deleted.
    4. There is longer chase scene in Jacob and Emma similar when being chased, it also included that they swim and used some sort of climbing but it was deleted.
    5. Dylan's voice actor was dissapointed when half of his dialogues are cut on one scene where Dylan is teasing Kaitlyn with another HACKA HACKA QUARRY. Players would not catch the joke since it was cut but there was a glitch that if you pause the scene and play and do it back and forth a glitch will reveal the whole dialogues but no screen actors playing.
    6. As Dylan went down the ladder he has more dialogues and intended to look around. however it will spoil the future scene of Emma and Abigail

RYAN's character is common on video games and anime niche series where the protagonist is the literal blank slate of the century and have little to no development but will have a character change such as like RYAN killing the wolf but it takes you more than 5 episode to see development.
The developers of the game had the intention of creating a story where the characters are also generic such as the characters in SCOOBY DOO, there is a loud jock, a slut sexist feminine, a frail character, the silent one but charming, the Joker that everybody loves, the nerd one that nobody likes and the literal boring background character.
None of the cast are practically seen on real life as each one have their clique or specific group of friends that has interest or same hobby with same goal which is why it is true to fiction to find these bunch of characters who are friends like lego block like look at the combination of the group lmao.

One thing I want to mention is that most if not all Supermassive games, you can just go the whole game without figuring out what's going on.
    1. In Until Dawn, you can go the whole game without figuring out that Hannah is one of the cannibals.
    2. In Man of Medan, you can go through whole game without figuring out that none of what you're seeing is real and the ship isn't haunted.
    3. In Little Hope, you can go the whole game without figuring out that the fire was an accident and Megan never had malicious intentions.
    4. In House of Ashes, you can go the whole game without figuring out that the vampires are an alien race that used to be peaceful, and were then ruined by the parasites.
    5. In The Devil in Me, you can go the whole game without figuring out who or what Du'Met even is.
But with the Quarry, the game will try as hard as possible to deliver everything to you without effort. All of the things I listed above are acquired through the clues you find throughout each game, but in the Quarry, there isn't ever any extra dialogue aside from the immediate speech you get when interacting with them, and they're never mentioned again. Like you said, the only collectible in the game that matters is the Hierophant (and debatably, the evidence).
Sure, you need to keep all the characters alive to get the whole story, but I think (one of) my main gripes with the Quarry is the fact you never feel rewarded for getting the collectibles. I recently did a playthrough of Until Dawn where I got all of the clues, and it helped me figure out some stuff I never knew about the game. Hell, Man of Medan, my least favorite game Supermassive has ever made, at least has a bunch of dialogue for getting the game's various secrets. And even then, getting House of Ashes' collectibles helps you realize what's actually going on, even if there's not much extra dialogue.
I think I just like being rewarded for finding secrets in games.

He seems to have a lot of family issues and made him rely on himself only and he is reluctant to even consider dating. He is that one character that touches reality and always acts like a normal human being would. He shows empathy but is also smart and can pick up on the details relatively easily and corrects people when they are in the wrong and funny dialogues come out of it. He decides to keep what's not crucial to others to himself. It feels like in his social life, he takes a safe step back, remains sarcastic. I feel like I do it too, especially with people I don't know entirely. He may not be a good fit for a horror movie, where you want the characters with raw emotions and crazy touching stories so that when they die you feel something deep down your heart, but he very much is realistically written and I think Justice tops it off with a very uncertain and reserved voice and it all just makes sense, it clicks

nick's actor confirmed on insta that the infection alters your worst traits to be something they're not, so nick being a creep to abi is likely the infection making it so that his crush on her becomes something disturbing and offputting- also compared with the fact he was full on MAULED in the woods and had a huge bite taken out of his thigh, which has important arteries, the infection made it to his brain *much* faster and probably hit him a lot harder. he would have died if the infection didn't prevent that from happening, so nick is incredibly out of it- that, plus the fact he doesn't even know what's going on, made him about a hundred times more susceptible to the virus

I just wanted to mention that there are at least two instances of a character with albinism in media who are not evil or villainous, both from Aardman movies funnily enough.
Albino Pirate from The Pirates (in an Adventure with Scientists), who is a rather jovial young lad with a fascination with exotic diseases.
and Whitey from Flushed Away who is a rat with albinism who, despite being a henchman for the movie's main antagonist, is very sympathetic and rather dim-witted but has his heart in the right place.

Same. He really made the game for me.
I enjoyed his humor. I also like how for some they're easy to dismiss him as this goofball unserious character, when he's imo the most protective and compassionate. Him and Kaitlyn were real showstoppers for me
Even when transforming, Dylan puts others before himself, and there's several instances where he'll throw himself into danger to save someone. One of my favorite scenes is if Dylan got infected, and him and Kaitlyn run into werewolf Emma by the car (I think is the scene), Dylan will put himself in front of Kaitlyn to protect her. Upon realizing Emma isn't attacking him he stays in the way so Kaitlyn can escape. I think he's the only character to be like this consistently in any situation.
It also showed to me the game's potential. I wish it got... MORE somehow. Or just approached things a bit differently. Because I enjoyed the idea behind how the transformations worked, affecting personality and it being different depending on the person or what not. I have more to say, but I'm not really sure how to articulate it. But basically I enjoyed the game well enough, it had its problems and could've been executed way better but I did have fun still and liked a lot about it. And Dylan was a huge chunk of that enjoyment of it. A great character. Miles nailed it.

Or, hell, move the love triangle here lol. Have Abby have a secret crush she's been nursing for Emma for who-knows-how-long, but Emma's boy-crazy and a flirt and Abby has convinced herself it doesn't matter and that she's content to just follow in Emma's shadow anyway. I guess they could let Emma and Abby express feelings for each other, but if we're wanting to keep some of Abby's "shy girl has been strong all along, but gets out of a toxic situation," her big "character moment" could be recognizing that Emma has likely suspected all along that Abby likes her, and has kept her around without committing because it makes her feel wanted. Then let Abby break free.
You could do a LOT with that. If Jacob turns into a werewolf, does Abby think of him as a competitor and shoot him? Does she see him as another victim? If Emma turns into a werewolf after Abby has had her realization, does she have compassion, and does she think that compassion is a weakness, or a sign of her healing? Does Emma kill her when she lowers her gun, echoing some of the themes discussed in the video?
The more I type, the more I think this would have been better lol

The reason I personally love Until Dawn is the level of restraint that the trailers had when it was first announced, focusing on the mask-donning psychokiller hunting the group at the resort. This diverted any and all expectation for the more horrific & nerve wrecking reveal of the game's true antagonist(s), which worked so well because the payoff excelled seamlessly with what the team had envisioned. And that's how you know it's good when the first half of the game lets you connect the tropes from other iconic movies, and then transforms the last segment into a The Decent scenario which had me more on edge my first & second playthrough, a year separating both times I basked in the perfect interactive horror game Until Dawn. But The Quarry introduces us to the Werewolves & Hackett family almost instantly within the first two-three hours without any grand reveal, I mean the reveal with the werewolf on the island didn't grasp what it intended to do was because Emma was being a insufferable influencer right before the event transpired.

  • @symoniarose2820

I did very much like the game, and I feel like it shines when it comes to the decision trees, but I do agree that the characters grated on my nerves--Like I genuinely wanted to wring the neck of a good few of them **coughRyancough** whenever they opened their mouth. Like they're INSUFFERABLE to listen to, good lord.
I subscribe to the thought of anyone who was infected were showing the darkest parts of themselves right before they turned, which gave them a bit of flavor that I appreciated. Nick seems to have a lot of suppressed emotions and thoughts that are very unhealthy, Emma taunts and mocks her 'audience' and is egocentric, Jacob is very insecure and panicky, and Dylan is pushing people away through his demeanor (even though it's for a good cause at the time). Ryan and Kaitlyn were never far enough in their infectious state for that part to come out, Max was a tad aggressive to Laura if you pick a certain dialogue option while in jail (but who can blame him?), and Laura was probs the only one I saw trying to actively keep herself together through her symptoms.
Maybe that's just me looking too deep into things, but I thought it was a cool touch.

To be fair, this was the same with Until Dawn, except for Sam and maybe Matt since they had next to zero personality to speak of. The rest of the characters were genuinely insufferable, even Chris in certain circumstances, and I don't believe the game gave them the character development to undo those character flaws. But... that's a lot of the point of horror movies, which these are obviously based off of. I found The Quarry's actual story far more compelling and interesting than Until Dawn, and I love Until Dawn.

@sarkaztik3228 Oh no, I completely agree, the characters were awfully lacking in Until Dawn too, as much as I liked it. But to their point, at least their characters can change and shift. The Quarry's were a lot more static, and it was infuriating.

I think it was in Dartigan's video, but i heard somewhere that because this game leans so heavily on referencing early slasher movies and making attempts to pay homage, they did what those movies did by making the cast unlikeable, that way their deaths are more cathartic and fun to watch for the audience. However, it doesn't work for a game because it feels like a failure, killing the characters you're playing as.

    • @fatalposiie
      @fatalposiie Місяць тому +2

@@symoniarose2820I personally enjoy how complex the characters in Until Dawn were. I just fininished Ratata's Until Dawn video and loved to listen to their in-depth character analysis for each of them. Looking at them beyond surface level was really fun and what I understand to be good character building.
In the Quarry however, they don't really let their personalities breathe, and instead have the characters directly tell us what's going on in their head (i.e. Emma talking to her viewers, Dylan and Ryan talking about what they do outside of camp while they're literally being hunted).
In The Quarry it feels out of place and almost stilted. You can make a case that Until Dawn did the same thing with Jessica, where she can talk about her lack of confidence, but when she did that it told us something about her character while she was speaking to the guy she loved. It was a soft moment between a couple that made sense.

But you made your point well describing what he had to offer in the first half and showing how the second half really undermined what they set up for him. I think I shifted my focus to Laura and Travis because they had the most to offer in the second half and didn't bother to draw a conclusion about Ryan as a character. The biggest issue with the game for me is the lack of the relationship and character trait meters from Until Dawn. In UD even minor dialogue options mattered because they effected the status bars and allowed you to define who you want the characters to be. I always think about how in Until Dawn everyone seems really terrified, but in the Quarry no one has any reactions. Emma cracks all these jokes after being chased by a werewolf.
Most of all I hate the final scene with Laura, Ryan, Travis and Silas. The game makes out it is going to be this huge battle to kill Silas but it is a 2 minute segment, you just stand there and have to shoot Silas whilst he sits still (although there is a time limit) and it feels really anticlimactic

Remember that until dawn had 10 characters, but 2 get removed in the prologue (Hannah, Beth), 1 is basically unplayable (Josh), Jess is basically an easter egg considering how difficult it can be to save her, and Matt also gets written out super early.
So you're left with 5 characters, of which two (Chris/Ashley) mostly have the storyline revolve around each other, and then the main characters Sam and Mike, and Emily who's a middle ground since you can kill her early, but she also constantly stays somewhat relevant if you manage to keep her alive.
It also really helped until dawn that no one comes in in the middle to usurp the main protagonist position. Imagine the mess of a game if Beth suddenly came in in the middle and took over and told us everything about Hannah etc.

Okay so this is just a small little thing I wanted a mention and not really an issue, but you asked why an Aussie (Nick) would come all the way from Australia to be a camp counselor in the U.S.
This is a lot more common than you’d actually think. I went to a Summer camp for almost 8 years straight from the age of 9 to 16 years old.
At this camp there were counselors from all over. Most were actually from a different state, but every single year there was a large handful of international counselors.
I’ve had counselors from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and even Austria. There were a lot of international counselors because it was an easy way for them to get into the U.S., visit a country they’ve never been to, try new things, and it looks great on a resumé.
Hope that makes more sense. I’m not sure of the writers for The Quarry actually knew how common it was, but I think it makes a ton of sense from my own experience at Summer camps.

Dylan is also weirdly obsessed with cutting arms off. And it is the funniest thing ever.
When Nick comes back injured, Dylan’s first reaction is “we gotta cut his arm off, no other way”
And same again when his arm gets injured he’s like “RYAN HURRY UP AND CUT MY ARM OFF NOT LIKE I WAIT WAITING FOR AN EXCUSE TO CUT MY ARM OFF OR SOMETHING”
And the funniest thing about this is that it’s HELPFUL. Cutting Dylan’s arm off helps him. It stops the warewolf curse from affecting him. He’s even like “ha I knew my obsession with cutting arms off will help one day!” (Not in those exact words but still)

Such a great balance in critiques and giving what’s due when it gets something right! I really enjoyed this breakdown. Thougj I find it hard not to believe Abby’s storyline with the abusive incel boyfriend was done on accident; especially when compared to Jacob’s storyline. Most likely it’s a leftover from troubled development, especially when it isn’t tied in at all to the main themes, and that’s why Nick and some parts might seem odd.
But oh my god I’m glad you talked about how much Ryan tanked I do not understand how they could have dropped the ball so hard. The only theory I have was that Laura’s storyline was so far in development that by the time she reenters the story there was just no time/assets to allow Ryan to be a character, since he’d clearly be so opposed to her opinions and storylines. But his character assassination is so bad it made me hate her, despite her amazing interactions with Travis I just couldn’t stand how Ryan’s character and the plot had to bend around her.
This all just reminded me how good The Quarry could have been, it feels like with more time or a stronger vision it could have really been something special.

I think the problem Supermassive has is the fact that Until Dawn doesnt reveal the real threat until halfway into the game and it makes you think the real threat is a serial killer, sure you get bits and pieces of the Wendi's (not saying the full name for reasons) before they are revealed as the real threat, where as games like Man of Medan, and Little Hope, its under the guise of being a supernatural threat only for it to be either a halucination by death gas, or a bus driver having a psychotic break and everything was in his head the entire time. even with the Quarry, yes it has a real supernatural element to it, however they played the werewolf card way too early on in the game, there would have been so much more suspense if the developers made us think that the Hacketts were hunting the kids for sport, it would have been better for Nick to be attacked off screen and work up to the realization he had been bit by a werewolf, the only other game in the dark pictures anthology that has the perfect buildup is House of Ashes because in the beginning we are introduced to the threat without it being shown, we know its something supernatural, but we dont find out what the threat is until about halfway through the game, even the ending credits has what the quarry was missing, the survivors are being interogated and it makes you feel like your choices matter, where as in the quarry, it doesnt matter what you do, the counsellers will all be arrested unless you find enough proof to back up your story, and even then its not a special cutscene, its nothing, its just a "hey guy we have an update, they arent guilty" it just felt like a major slap in the face to make us go through all that effort, and for what?

hey just wandered over here from the algorithm, this was fantastic. really glad to see you properly analyse the writing of the game and its characters, rather than just recounting the plot and labelling it a video essay. your early contextual framework of briefing us on the issues at Supermassive was really helpful.

I kind of like how chaotic all the storylines are and some characters just being “basic”. Made it more realistic to me in terms of viewpoint. I felt like I wasn’t getting too much information and the confusion kept it interesting. I did want more from all of them though. And your Ryan main character idea was spot on, that would have been awesome.

Appreciate the detail/overview's you go through in the beginning, watched this game only once when it came out and I've forgotten most parts of it.
I agree with most of your points, really just feels like three writers went in separate rooms, made their stories and someone else just meshed them together without much thought while cutting what would've made the original products great.
Your videos have been in my recommended tab for like a month, both this and the until dawn video, finally checked them out and loved them! Supermassive games always have a special place in my heart, until dawn is like the first horror game I actually remember enjoying the whole way through as a fan of narrative driven games, and although they're flawed, I can find at least one aspect/sequence/part that I loved from each of their games.

i remember when this game came out and i was obsessed with it i platinumed and made tiktoks about it. i tried to replay it a few weeks ago and couldnt get past chapter 3 i think theres certain events that have to happen for the plot emma getting infected in chapter 4 means she will turn and there will be a fight scene which makes the game so much better. if you dont infect emma its just a random scene. this scene also leads to a very important section where emma and jacob will have a talk and it fleshes out there characters. even though i dont think the game needs this but ive heard people say that emma and abi should have a talk about nick and the kiss. some others say that most characters except ryan laura kaitlyn and dylan are super under used. i think the game is amazing and it made me into games emma will always be my fav game character. but it falls flat if you dont get certain scenes. (i dont reaally know how to end this comment sorry guys if its to long) (also just watched your nick werewolf thing what happens with werewolf and how he gets angry and thats there true nature its not guys when they turn it boosts there worst or best traits)

      @RatatTalks  4 місяці тому +7

Emma is super variable, I agree, I mentioned her discussion with Jacob here, and I really like that scene. On the subject of content you can just miss, Kaitlyn has a pretty funny missable scene where if you fail the first QTE when she's running away from Bobby it just skips the entire scene but the whole thing is still implied to have happened off screen.

I noticed that they've been trying to subvert a lot of choices you had in Until Dawn, like you mentioned about not wanting to shoot a character. Not shooting Emily was the right decision but here it gets you killed. A big point in Until Dawn was "sometimes doing nothing is the right thing to do", but in The Quarry doing nothing will often result in you dying.

I mean... he literally turned into a bloodthirsty monster in front of you and yeeted you through half the house. Why wouldn't you shoot it since your life obviously is in grave danger. I'd understand your problem if the choice was before he yeeted her and turned into a werewolf, like if the choice popped up when he was struggling, but at that point? It'd be lunacy to not shoot at the monster wanting to chop your head off.

I feel like Nick was supposed to come over as more controlling because the werewolf bite made him go from infatuated to possessive, but the writer's nuance meter was off by a mile and they accidentally wrote him as a predatory creep who wants "easy pickings" and is self-absorbed and a possessive abusive jackass.
I feel like Nick isn't called out enough for the behaviour or doesn't get any comeuppance for his actions for the degree of how bad he is to be written deliberately.
But yes, he absolutely comes over as a terrible person in the game.

  • @destinyhntr
    @destinyhntr 4 місяці тому +10

You're voicing a lot of the issues I had with the game as well. While the Until Dawn characters could be annoying, they all had likeable traits, even the mean girls. Jessica was annoying but she showed her insecurities and was quick to cooperate with Matt when things got serious. Emily was awful but at least she had a head on her shoulders and usually acted logically when the situation required it. The Quarry's characters (and plot) don't have that same balanced charm. It just feels like a poor sequel, which is really what it is. I hope they try again, learn their lessons, and come back with something better.

I watched like half the video. I completely agree. But i think its like this because it was cut short due to covid. They started doing mocap during covid and it got cut short so they used what they could. If im not mistaken the original script was way longer with every character being utilized more and more. There were also supposed to be more locations, chases, deaths. But yk. Stupid ass covid.

1:01:11 "Based" was popularized online among Alt-right dudebros as a slang term generally used as an affirmation for things unapologetically racist or otherwise bigoted & anti-"woke". [Example] News Article: Local man disowns daughter for marrying a black man. Alt-right dudebro sh*thead: Based!
I find it really hard to believe that anyone still throwing that term around wouldn't be aware of this. Jacob does seem to be the only character who consistently seems to dislike the one black guy at camp for no apparent reason & he's definitely a "dudebro" so maybe you were actually trying to use the term accurately which would be telling considering how much you seem to like the character.
      @ RatatTaIks
      9 hours ago (edited)
I appreciate the word has that connotation, but it was popularised in quite a few circles by Lil B and didn’t have that same meaning within those circles. In more recent years it’s also been pretty heavily reclaimed as a post-ironic piece of slang, which is mainly how I’m using it.
As with most colloquialisms it has numerous usages over time, and can be applied differently dependent on context and intent, to immediately assume the most bad faith interpretation and then to use it to apply an assertion on someone’s character is irresponsible in my opinion.
Also Jacob doesn’t really give me those vibes, but fair enough if that’s what you pick up on, you’re welcome to your own analysis.
I think I’ve made it pretty clear across all of my videos that I have nothing but disdain for anti-woke grifters and people who buy into their rhetoric, and by no means am I trying to cater to them.
      @ rickyandreou
What I find irresponsible is casually throwing about an ambiguous slang term that in recent years has been appropriated & widely associated among online Alt-right bigoted communities & then claim innocence when called out about it. A responsible person would just avoid using the tainted term altogether to avoid that potential association.
The LIl B cop out is merely plausible deniability that doesn't hold up as it was never popularized among hip hop/black communities & certainly not in the manner which you use it, which is in fact more aligned with its Alt-right dudebro usage. So again, a responsible person would just NOT use it at all to avoid giving people the wrong impression or you can just admit that you either simply don't care that you're signal boosting what many people recognize as a popular Alt-right appropriated slang term or that you're actually happy doing so as a wink to your fellow brethren.

This game would be a solid 6/10 if it AT LEAST did the werewolves right. But it didn't. The werewolves in TQ don't even look like werewolves (they look more like the aliens from Signs funnily enough.) And the fact they just burst into werewolves instantly, there's no tense, painful transition, it completely takes away from a major aspect of horror of the werewolf mythology. I'm not saying they had to do every transformation like American Werewolf In London (hell, they could have just done most of them off screen and used sound effects to imply the shift), but if they at least gave us SOMETHING. A glimpse of a slow, painful transformation, I'm wondering if they straight up didn't have the budget to do so. Because I can't imagine in any realm where they thought exploding meatmen was better and less goofy than an actual transition. It completely deflates the tension if someone goes from being a human to a werewolf in 0.5 seconds. Remember in Until Dawn when we see Hannah's journal, and we see her writing down her last coherent thoughts as she slowly loses her mind when the Wendigo spirit takes over her? The idea of someone forcibly changing into something monstrous against their will is so innately horrific (and ingrained into werewolf mythology and other mythologies like it) that just seeing Hannah's journal entries was effective enough.

Travis is great, in part because he looks good in comparison to other characters, in part due to Ted Raimis performance, and in part because the tragic family member of the werewolves is a great stock horror archetype.

Good video! Just binged my way through after watching your Until Dawn one earlier this evening. I've only seen UA-cam playthroughs of Until Dawn so I was very happy to play the Quarry for myself when it came out. I definitely agree it's not as strong as its predecessor, although I still enjoyed my time with it a lot.
On the topic of the tarots, I will defend the Devil tarot. IIRC it warns you to act "before the devil is unleashed" or something which is a hint that you need Abby to shoot Nick before he turns. Sadly I missed this card and Abby got killed, as I was trying to go for no deaths and wasn't sure if Nick could take a shotgun shell as a human. I like to think I'd have saved her if I'd found the Devil card.
I also feel compelled to defend Nick too. I'm reminded of how Emma can lash out so angrily at Abby before she turns. I think they were only going for the bite making him more toxic/aggressive rather than Nick being a bad person inherently. Kinda like roid rage? I may be biased as I think he's cute. 😊
