What is Outlast Even About?
By viewer demand here's a rundown of Outlast. Not just the first game but the entire series (Outlast, Outlast: Whistleblower, Outlast 2, The Murkoff Account, The Murkoff Collection and The Outlast Trials).
This video aims to walk the line between a more serious video essay and a goofy gaming video, which is a hard tone to balance. Hopefully I didn't totally mess it up!
Sources used all listed within the video, but if you can't find any leave a comment and I can help.

Forgotten Gem - Analysing House of Ashes
Переглядів 29 тис.Місяць тому
Back to the Supermassive Games analysis series with the oft-overlooked gem that is House of Ashes, it really pained me to not use the cliche term 'masterpiece' in this video. Much like my original videos on Until Dawn and The Quarry, this video ends with a tier list of all the characters. Maybe when I've covered all of the Dark Pictures Anthology I'll make a tier list of all the characters, now...

Fear & Hunger & Enlightenment
Переглядів 67 тис.Місяць тому
The long overdue video on the enlightened souls of Fear & Hunger and Fear & Hunger: Termina, with some light spoilers for Dark Souls and Berserk. This video contains some utterly unhinged theories for Fear and Hunger that I very much expect people to disagree with at first, but please hear me out on these. This was a fun video to make in spite of all the setbacks, but I'm very much looking forw...
A Disturbing Comic About Loneliness
Переглядів 3,8 тис.2 місяці тому
Todays video is about Meathouse Man, a pre-Game of Thrones story by George RR Martin, later adapted into a comic book by Raya Golden and Jet City Comics. This is a highly disturbing fusion of sci-fi and horror that sees Martin flex his ability to write some really gross stuff. Like, seriously, very uncomfortable stuff. In spite of how offputting this story can be I think it has a place at the t...

Today we're taking a break from Supermassive games to talk about Parasocial, the 2023 indie horror game from japanese developer Chillas Art. In this game you play as an aspiring vtuber who finds themselves the victim of a parasocial stalker. Thematically it's similar to Satoshi Kons masterpiece Perfect Blue, but adapted to deal with uniquely modern horrors born from our own interest in streamer...
Maiden Voyage - Discussing Man of Medan
Переглядів 43 тис.4 місяці тому
In the first video looking back on the Dark Pictures Anthology by Supermassive Games I'm talking about Man of Medan (2019). This game has some pretty high highs, and does improve upon Until Dawn in some ways which I'll cover, but ultimately it fell short for a lot of people, myself included. This game is based loosely on the real story of the Ourang Medan, and it also takes elements from Unit 7...
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back - Analysing The Quarry [SPOILERS]
Переглядів 341 тис.5 місяців тому
Everything in this video is entirely my opinion, art is subjective, yada yada yada. Today we're discussing The Quarry, as was widely requested in the comments of my prior video on Until Dawn. This video also contains some discussion around the wider Supermassive games library, and speculation around the upcoming Dead by Daylight tie-in game. I have been a longtime fan of the telltale method of ...
Lightning in a Bottle - Why Until Dawn Worked
Переглядів 635 тис.6 місяців тому
Hey, this is long video essay about Until Dawn, focussing in on analysing the main characters of the core cast, and what made them work. I firmly believe that it is the characters that have given this game such longevity, as the mechanics and vibes were very standard of the time at release. I kept things within my usual video essay on horror format here, but incorporated some other elements suc...

Monsters Under Your Skin || Junji Ito & Body Horror

This is an anthology video essay covering three stories by Junji Ito: Slug Girl, The Enigma of Amigara Fault and Den of the Sleep Demon/Where the Sandman Lives. This video covers the many ways in which body horror is used across his work, covering themes of repression, mental illness, main character syndrome and loneliness. Edgar Allan Poe's Bizarre Orangutan Mystery || The Origins of Crime Fiction

TO ANYONE WHO CARES, please read my comment in its entirety! - I’d like to start by stating I absolutely love the ending. I agree with some of the early points in the video about how it is a brilliant first play through that doesn’t hold up after that, but I don’t mind this as, most movies, even good ones, have this same 2nd viewing problem. Second- this game absolutely has the best soundtrack, overall premise, intro scene (the Prologue) and imo, the most unique creature design. Tailoring each demon to the causes of death was genius instead of “generic alien creature” or “werewolves”. So the game from a creation perspective deserves immense praise. Third, I understand that considering it’s a game where you fight to keep your characters alive, it’s frustrating to see that it’s technically for nothing, but the characters aren’t necessarily supposed to be relatable protagonists like the ones from house of ashes. The ENTIRE game in my opinion, is an exploration of grief and trauma. Although some may not like it, it deserves props for trying something extremely unique as opposed to the bland and predictable stories of The Quarry, Man of Medan and Devil in Me. Little Hope also has really interesting side stories such as the downfall of the town, and Meghan likely being groomed by the priest. I know I’m in the minority, but I will always hold this game as my favorite entry just ahead of HoA! And I mean cmon…. The Curator is at his best in this entry and he’s just so so fun to hear from! - Lastly, I like your retelling a lot! I personally enjoyed Will Poulter as the protagonist but your retelling was awesome! I especially LOVED your ideas about the realities bleeding together and outfits changing here 1:27:13
This has nothing to do with nothing but (39:17) You're playing Coraline music behind Outlast?
Yeah it’s the coraline OST, I really like that movie and the soundtrack creates great ambiance
16:28 Me to the unsupervised kid at the playground
Just starting the video, but I think at its root, outlast is about government corruption. Especially when it's all based off of MK ultra.
They balled hard when they made the Outlast trials. "hey let's make a fantasy video game about MKUltra lmao"
Honestly what a choice
There's a point during what you said about Emma that I think I realized why there are so many characters. Or at least why some of them exist in the way that they do. Emma taking the picture. It seems inconsequential because the other counselors already know about werewolves. But it isn't, because that's one of the things that you need to do in order to get the good ending. So that they don't all go to jail or at least get questioned because no matter what you do Kaylee Hackett is dead and more than likely there are others dead too like some of the Hackett family. So stuff explaining that what they saw was real is necessary. Maybe you point this out later on (I'm still towards the end of Emma's part) but that's my thought. And obviously they could have handed some of that to other characters and pared down the cast a bit, but my guess is they might've already had people and signed contracts and so had to work with what they had.
I expected more horror from Outlast Trials but instead it felt too close to Dead by daylight.
That’s fair, I think it’s good but I see that comparison
based riders on the storm music in the background, guess i'm going to play underground 2 now
"I dont know why the usa let him do any of this..." LOL HAUAHUAHAUAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHA
Deeply concerning government
The fact that the USA hasn't been internationally sanctioned for even thinking about MK ultra, let alone committing experiments for years is one of the great injustices of this world.
It is crazy how all the declassified stuff is just ‘we did a crime so what’
Will u review the Outlast Comics ?
I’ll review them here; pretty good, I preferred the collections series because Clyde Perry is a good character
@ Hell Yeah 🤘🏾
Are you planning on making a video about the remake?
Probably at some point, I’m almost done with my backlog of projects

outlast is my special interest, and I loved this analysis of the games. Subbed instantly thank you!,!!!
You’re welcome!
i expected kany things from this skibidi jumpscare wasn't one of them
heya! you know the drill, haven't touched a lick of the franchise but more than willing to yap. i found the religion aspect to be the most intruiging. then again, i did grow up in a cult (technically still am in one, but dw i've made efforts to ensure my safety for now). however, even with my background, i do like to see the differences between religious institutions and actual faith. religion, faith in its pure form, has always been a place for the hurt to gather. it mends the wounds left there by violence. that's why cults are so dastardly. faith and religion, whether you believe in god, science or love, has always been here to mend. twisting it into something so ugly further outlines the corruption of power. over the course of this year i have begun realizing just how deep the cult has affected me. i will undoubtedly find more the more i look inward. however, i have also learned to separate it from god, or really, love. i think that's one of the functioning parts of this. how love and power can never be in the same room. they oppose each other. none of these characters had experienced the love that they were supposed to, and instead what they experienced was power, or rather the lack of it. of course, as you mentioned, hurt people don't actually hurt others. but they do hurt themselves when they're unable to leave power for love. all this sappy shit to say, good essay and a great game series that forces us to look at the world and question what we'll choose: love or power. i'll keep choosing love, even if it kills me. though i'll certainly need to keep practicing, i'm not quite good at it yet, but i'd rather die trying to love than live continuing to hate. sincerely, an anonymous canadian university student ps. hearing "father martin" jumpscared me because i have a character in one of my stories named that. his name is martín flores, and he is a sweet, oblivious priest who used to be part of a punk band 🫶
Wishing you the best of luck with your internal journey, seems to be going well so far :) And yeah your Father Martin is quite different haha
heyyy guess who hasn't played these games? me! and for once, i can actually say i am not planning in playing them ever! mainly because i'm a little bitch baby with no braincells 🫶 these hard games aren't for me. however! they are very interesting. i always find conversations around knowledge to be intruiging. who gets to decide what is considered true knowledge and what isn't. who is honored and who is ridiculed. all so very fun. personally, for a post-logic world, it would be fun to be a krishnamurti figure rise out of its ashes. not necessarily because he was around during the peak of it. but because his ideas of freedom would be a further break away from the divine! anyways, great video as always. i'm sure the footage was a pain and a half to get. keep up the great work, man. ps. i think my soul would be shaped either as a little raccoon or a crow. i like shiny things, but i've also been described as slightly mischevious. i have no idea why, i'm an utter delight 🫶 either way, have a lovely day! sincerely, that anonymous university student from canada
I'm shocked to hear the writer for House of Ashes has not done more scripts for games or films.. What gives?
From my understanding he isn’t even a full time writer
Jason & Salim were easily the standouts. I loved their arc.
Thank you Karrum ❤️
You said "Skibidi Joilet" like it was no big deal and I almost thought that was his actual name.
Something to note on Jonestown. Often it is portrayed as the members willingly engaging in the drinking of poison. This isn't remotely truly. We can't know for sure exactly how many, but it is likely that as many people were forced to consume the poison as drank it willingly. The idea that it was just mass self harm is a common myth. At the end, things were breaking down and a growing number were becoming skeptical of his leadership. You don't start to have armed guards and such because people are listening to you...
Yeah there’s audio from it and there’s people crying and screaming and clearly being forced it’s really disturbing
"I don't why the US government let him do all this" the answer is right there: communists are scary! So we have to be scarier than the commies!
Trueeee, those dang communists and their mind control beams
6:42 you thought you were slick weren't you?
I admit I did
i didnt care for mike at the beginning of the game but he became my favorite throughout the story
Mf said that game is over a decade old and at that very moment... holy shit im so fuckjng old...
Yeah it was upsetting for me to Google the release date too haha
The hallucinations in outlast 2 were caused by the radio towers that were near the religious town
Yeah I mentioned they were Murkoff property and part of an experiment but only in passing
The government let him do it cuz the people in charge of it are no better
True
Small thing, punishment is NOT negative reinforcement, its just punishment. Negative reinforcement is the removal of something unpleasant, where as positive is the giving of something pleasent. Think like, a baby negativity enforces their parents by stopping their crying. Punishment is its own, third thing.
Yeah I goofed there, pinned comment is the correction. Thanks for the comment though, I need to learn to speak better lol
@@RatatTalks all good! Just an ECE student and it's smth I could share hehe
Hey! Commenting just because I was recently looking into deindividuation. Not in a "you got it wrong" way (because you didn't, necessarily) but "you might be interested to know" way. The theory of deindividuation has transformed over the years, initially about why people exhibit violent behaviour in crowds. Zimbaro related his Prison experiment to deindividation in the exact way that you described it. However, there was a lot of criticism about that theoretical basis of deindividation (specifically if it is the crowd/anonymity itself that causes violence, and if it has to be violence that is caused, and also how the theory ignores sociopolitical context). Ultimately, the most recent theory of deindividation is actually how in groups, with an increase in factors like anonymity and group salience, people act less as their "individual identity" and more as "their group identity", exhibiting behaviour that they believe the group they're in endorses. e.g. If a person is in a friend group that smokes, they will smoke regardless of personal values (due to various factors, not necessarily peer pressure). To use the theory of deindividuation with Murkoff, it's accurate to say that while experiencing group salience (hightened identification with group) and anonymity (specifically from punishment from outside the group) employees in Murkoff align to what they see as the norms/ideals of Murkoff over their own norms/ideals and performing related beahviour. In this case, backstabbing and violence. Deindividation is not the only explination for aligning to group ideas, and is different from obedience in that no one has to put pressure on a person to exhibit group behaviours. Also different from behaviourism (operant conditioning) as there doesn't have to be punishment/reinforcement. Functionally the same as what you were describing, but a significant difference in the theoretical description of deindividuation, and also has different and more well-explained reasoning/causes behind it. If you're interested, lmk. Also, MertKayKay just did a video about The Outlast Trials and how they are a satire of facism. A different lens to yours but also a great video about what Outlast (the trials specifically) are about.
Appreciate the context, and I just got done watching that Mertkaykay video it was awesome
I’m SO happy we got an extra ending in the remake and we can save Josh
For real
Yes.
I remember when Outlast Trials was revealed and everyone was pissed it was multiplayer and not Outlast 3 lol. I love Outlast lore and all but I got 10-15 hours out of 1 and 2. I already have 100+ hours on Trials, that replay value and story we get fed in tiny bits is so nice imo.
Yeah I love Trials lol
The game is about exposing unsafe and hazardous mental institution then they realize that was only the tip of the iceberg the second one was like a documentary crew that was shot down then finds a crazy cult the multiplayer one I haven’t got to yet but the other two were really good I mean of course the game is way deeper then that both of em but that’s kind of how it fools you into thinking it’s not nearly as bad as it really is. Imo I’m not the dev but that’s the vibes I got from em.
I think that’s a good take
@@RatatTalks definitely enjoy them thou horror games sort of take away from the horror if you can fight back and get weapons that are overpowered. I used to love the condemned games to cause they done what they done really well to you’d be fighting folks with a 2x4 lol. But yeah no weapons at all and only a camera that was awesome idea there is no fight or flight it’s only flight and hide lol. Biohazard was fun cause that’s fp resident evil great game like I said thou it can get less scary and become more of a action shooter the outlast franchise is killing the game rn when it comes to actual fear cause your like oh shit where’s a bed to hide under a locker I really enjoyed em.
Somehow I missed all of UA-cam talking about this game, because I knew nothing about it! But your thoughts on it were really interesting, and I learned a lot. I thought it was really cool how it was based on real horror and real psychological experiments.
Yeah I love how viscerally real a lot of it feels
This video got recommended to me and I absolutely love your research abilities and the way you flow through your ideas! Such great work and the nuance of seeing how the outlast environment is a place of control in and outside the experiments is such a smart remark! Really enjoyed your video! 👍
Thanks! Glad the algo is picking me up a bit
I got to see the original outlast being filmed live when they shot the chase scenes for the game. They filmed at the former Buffalo state hospital in the fall of 2012, which has since been converted into an expensive hotel.
Yeah I made a short on the actual location, looks crazy
Considering a PaIestinian man was literally sodomized to death by the lDF in their systematic mass rape of prisoners, playing this game recently made me wonder how far their tortures actually go in their creativity. I know there is some guy trapped in a room being fed psychedelics being forced to watch gore who is also being mutilated and made a sex slave.
So all in all... The game is shit
Yep
It's so insulting to have the perpetrators write stories where their victims are forgiving but also partially responsible, even the worst iraqi doesn't compare to the best us soldier. Imagine nazis writing a story about a camp guard and a prisoner becoming friends lol. How stupid.
Their two sides in a war I don’t remember the Jews in Nazi Germany fighting against the Nazies in a war also I don’t remember them fighting aliens
I think that’s a fair take, but I’d argue that this game doesn’t shy away from portraying the American zeitgeist as being damaging, and overall abstracts itself enough from the conflict to tell a more broad strokes story about violence, rather than being specifically about American imperialism in the Middle East. The setting informs the themes, but the game isn’t ABOUT that setting.
I'm a bit older than most of the commenters (based off everyone saying they were children when outlast came out) and as an older horror girlie it was SUCH a huge hit amongst my friends. Whistleblower in particular made a big wave amongst my friends + other online girls because it was SO funny to see gamer dudes freak out over Eddie. He felt so transgressive and fun because Waylon goes through a horror girl arc. A lot of the tropes he faces are shit final girls go through-- threats of SA, loss of body autonomy, marriage/birthing horror etc etc it was very thrilling and novel. I was honestly sad they pivoted back to putting it on a female character in Outlast2-- which was fine, but didn't hook me to the same extent as 1 did. I had written off Trials all together and just held Outlast 1 + Whistleblower close to my heart, but after watching this I think I should give it and 2 another chance. I loved the essay and Outlast is one of my favorite games. Listening to other people talk about it is always a joy!
It’s one of my faves too, and yeah that subversive gender role reversal is interesting, another commenter mentioned reading some articles on Outlast and gender, but I couldn’t find them :(
