  • How do you convey the presence or someone or something in a scene without the audience actually seeing it? That's the special challenge of horror-movie sound design. In this episode of "Movies Insider," we visited Alchemy Post Sound, the Foley studio behind "The Invisible Man" and a slew of other horror projects, to find out how horror movies use sound to play with viewers' minds.
We had one of Alchemy's founders, Foley artist Leslie Bloome, break down a few scenes from "The Invisible Man" as case studies, recreating how his team made sounds as subtle and detailed as a faucet squeak or a faint wind chime. He also showed us how Foley artists create a range of classic horror-movie suspense sounds, from unsettling creaks to mysterious gusts of wind, and explained how all these carefully crafted sounds come together to ratchet up the tension in horror scenes, making climactic moments feel larger than life.

I love how horror movies are becoming more and more focused on the sound of it, it doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares. Jump scared are welcome but I feel as if many movies and franchises are using them every chance they get. Sometimes a suspenseful moment where you are waiting, sitting on bated breath, for the jump scare, only for it not to happen. In my opinion, those moments are better then any. And I feel as if sound adds more feel to if you are really in the scene itself.

One of my favorite horror movies of all time, "It Follows", doesn't rely on jump scares at all, but it has, IIRC, two of them. The movie relies so heavily on suspense and panic that the two jump-scare moments really surprise you. I was just watching the movie for the third or fourth time a couple nights ago and both jump-scares legitimately startled me. And the rest of the movie is even better.

Foley artists and foley editors deserve more recognition for evoking emotional responses from an audience…at times, more so than actors. The range of conscious and subconscious influence often goes unrecognized by the audience. Beneath conscious recognition, that affect is an essential part of immersing the audience into the film.

this isn't the full story, at all. cuz the Foley is sound production, but there's also sound design, which an engineer makes, with so much more that goes in to it that rustling a shirt at the right moment. please get more of that, making a simple sound, amazing
there's a lot with where the sound comes from, how loud it is, if it's distorted or not, if it's bassy or not. and i would love to see more of this

I believe that Mozart said music isn ´t in notes but in gaps between them
And for horror movie works of course also

Well, it's the note intervals that make the music because it can create tension. In horror movies the music used is very dissonant.

Too this day it's stuck in my head one of the creepiest sounds ever and one of the scariest parts of the whole movie is the consistent sound of the wind throughout the shinning. Idk why I found it so creepy. Probably because the first time I watched it it was playing on TV when I woke up and that wind sound was what woke me up but it stayed throughout the whole movie

Sounds, or the lack thereof, really affects horror/thrillers. It’s CRAZY! (The invisible man, the shining, a quiet place)

  • @ash_tray

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a sucker for older movies with cheaper scares and not the best sfx (compared to now) but movies like the invisible man really have my heart. The way that movie gave me so much anxiety and fear, and being domestic violence victim myself, this movie gave me a feeling not many scary movies have. And I think it’s beautiful that something that was all made up can do that.

Man, the subtle sound design would be great to listen to if you actually stopped talking for a minute to actually let the audience listen to it instead of narrating what they can hear for themselves

  • @andersburrows1085
    @andersburrows1085 2 роки тому +10

this was a cool video that was damaged by how often all the subtle sound stuff being talked about was being talked over by the narrator. they be like, listen to the sounds being made here, are you listening? good, next... but they never really gave time to HEAR the sounds. the video would have been much better with a little more breathing room for the sound. often youd get just the tiniest sliver of the sound you are listening to before the narrator jumps in again completely overpowering the sounds you are supposed to be listening to. it should have left more time for the sounds themselves. i dont want to WATCH the foley artist make the sound, i want to LISTEN to the foley artist make the sound! a 12-15 minute video would have been just as easy to watch as a 10 minute one and would have left more time for the actual sound, which was the whole point of the video.

Don't get me wrong, foley is always going to be fascinating. However, this highlighted style of sound design, specifically for horror movies, is one of the main reasons why everyone I know doesn't take Blumhouse/modern horror projects seriously. When everything is shot like a domestic thriller/drama, a phone that sounds like a jackhammer or a house that silences like it's in a vacuum doesn't sound suspenseful or horrifying; it just sounds funny

I wish I had access to all this stuff when I took a semester of post-production audio sweetening back in college in the ‘80s. We had to create all our foley sounds from scratch in an empty studio. Footsteps and wind were easy. Replicating the sound of someone climbing a chain-link fence isn’t easy when you don’t have a chain-link fence to use.

I kinda like the stock drain sound. Imagine as the drain is still making sound and just as it is about to peter out she gets grabbed. Your focused on the drain sound and so it's more shocking.

A superb example is the ghost in the cupboard scene. Very very scary
