I own R6 for 8 years now. No track days (hopefully one day) only twisty road with almost now traffic. I dont ride it as much as I used to. Realized that rideing it the way it was ment to be ridden is gonna end bad sooner or later. And rideing it safe (90km/h) has no meaning. However there is no way I would sell it. I love the R6 but bought a ZX6 due mainly to price. Never been to the track and ride strictly on the street. I got a motorcycle to enjoy the pure essence of beauty, power and handling for a good price. A supersport fit the bill. The real cost is safety and tickets as you cannot enjoy them at the speedlimit, but I have an SUV for those occasions. Just the ultimate imo, but perhaps the back pain will be too much one day. That is by far the biggest issue.

  • @akabiscuitwaffle
    @akabiscuitwaffle Рік тому +235

I think part of the issue is that there's such a large backlog of used ones for cheap, that there isn't a huge reason to pay 4x the price of the used one, when the newer ones don't offer much of a improvement over what the older ones have/had. For a lot of the newer stuff that's been added, a lot of stuff has been dropped too.
Like if I go out and buy a brand new 500cc "sport bike" from Honda- they're going to hand me a parallel twin with little to no mod support. Where as I can buy a older 4 cylinder 500cc for much less, and it have a large aftermarket already existing.
They literally, do not make, a lot bike/engine configurations that they use to. So if I want said configuration, it's impossible to buy it new. I'm forced to buy used simply because no one makes it.

I also smell the end of an era incoming, and I wanted to get a bike I could afford that hopefully I could keep and maintain up until we're all monitored on the street for speeding via cellphone gps, satellite cam, and killer robo dogs. I think price pays a huge part. Sportbikes appeal a lot more to younger riders who dont have the same disposable income. Especially after they check the price of insurance on a new machine. When the used market is flooded with good sportbikes for $2k-4k that are a decade old and far cheaper to insure, it makes sense new ones dont sell nearly as much.
As for brands like harley selling relatively well despite price, ill point out their average buyer is arounf AARP age, and one of their biggest selling models is a mobility scooter. They appeal exactly to the disposable income generation

For me it comes down to the manufacturers being at fault. Supersports could be ridden on the street back when I learned to ride 3 decades ago. They were sporty but not awful. Then the manufacturers got into a hp and tech race and the bikes, though more capable, became more and more laser focused and razors edge until they pretty much lost their appeal. The thing that saved the industry was Ducati making the Monster, a parts bin “toss it out there and see if it sticks” Hail Mary naked bike that re-captured the public’s attention with sporty feel, sound and ergos that didn’t punish anybody who wasn’t in their early 20s or a Yoga master….though it still, had Desmo valves. Still waiting for one of the Japanese companies to take one of the more comfortable naked bikes and put full fairings on it (cough…Kawasaki Z900…cough) or de tune an inline 4 supersport with actual power below 19,000,000 RPMs and a more upright riding position. First one that does will have a license to print money from many of us 40-50 something’s with fond memories of that Hurricane 600 who go into a dealer, sit on a current model supersport and just cringe at the chiropractic bills which would inevitably ensue.

For me it's just an issue of use case and storage/affordability.
I love many aspects of riding, be it touring, hooning or going fast on twisties. A sport bike is so hyper specialised that I'd need another bike or 2 to be able to enjoy the other aspects of riding, but considering I don't have a garage and insurance is really expensive as a new rider (1 year last month) having a sportbike doesn't make much sense when I could get an sv650 or any other naked bike which can do many things really well.
Don't get me wrong i will still get a 600 or 1k when i get my full license because I do want to experience the thrill of revving to 16k and going 150+, but that's going to be for just one summer or so.
If i had the space for 2 bikes I'd ideally like a 90s cbr400rr as my supersport because it's perfect for hitting local twisties and getting on the motorway for a bit if needed, it still has the iconic i4 engine and it looks cool. I wish companies made more 250cc-400cc i4 sportbikes again tbh.

Because what do I really need a 200 hp bike for on the street? Those bikes are really cool, don't get me wrong, but an average rider like myself, would never be able to ride that any where near what it is really capable.

While Stationed in Japan, I found that in the domestic market anything over 400cc is very expensive.
So there was a very good selection of high performance bikes 400cc and less.
Even some 250cc that were great. There are many countries that have similar laws. Insurance is a killer over 400cc.
But most manufacturers have decided that there just isn't a market for these bikes in the USA. They just don't sell.
Back in the 1960's and 70's when 'you meet the nicest people on a Honda' there were wonderful bikes like the Honda 4 cylinder CB400F. In 1984 Yamaha sold the real awesome RZ350. It was a liquid cooled 2 stroke twin. It was very light, had fantastic handling. And could kick ass in the twisted roads. But they just didn't sell.
The Japanese market sold a similar bike but it was 250cc.
I am surprised that we have so many twin cylinder bikes over 400 cc.
It used to be that you started out on a 400cc twin. And your next bike had to be a 4 cylinder.
I too would like to see standard 4 cylinder 600cc bikes with modern abs et cetera.

Sold the klr and got an rgv, mostly cos it was fast AF but funny enough it was better to commute on compared to the klr. Maybe it's just me, and I'm the odd one out. Best thing is not to commute at all tho, have an R1 now and it's not great for long highway rides but I'd still take it over a single cylinder thumper for highway.

Depends on the person you are and your level of commitment. For 7 years now, my daily has been a 3 different models of CBR600RR. I will probably make an exception for the CBRs, as Honda really knows how to make an all-around supersport. But yes, you CAN have a 600-1000CC Supersport as your daily. Especially since a lot of the super sports have “daily driver” technology from factory, such as ABS, TC, quickshifters, hydraulic clutch levers, wheelie control, riding modes etc. I do occasionally ride my father’s old Honda VTX 1800 from time-to-time, but NOTHING comes close to experiencing a Supersport on a daily basis. Just firing one up every morning when going to work gets my heart racing more than a strong Espresso. Also, depending on where you live, you can totally “use” a 600CC Suoersport’s power for daily duty. On a litre bike, its just power overkill.

TLDR: if we want to continue making sport bikes, we need to make them street 1st track 2nd, and that's why nakeds do so well.
Also the young crowd that would still want sport bikes is too broke to buy new anyway, so they turn to the used market and buy the older ones, and in fairness, they aren't really missing out on a lot.

Between work, and Arizona monsoon season combining triple digit heat and afternoon rainshowers have only had time to put 29 miles on it so far. The R1 is amazing though and definitely amazing technology combined with amazing performance. With the N+1 formula next bike is hopefully a GYTR R-7 completely track converted and the R1 being the occasional track day.

I think a lot of it was the late 2000s. The early 2000s were great times, it was bikes, and hookers and blow all day every day. Like a DeLorean Motor Company meeting. The late 2000s brought us the housing collapse, which turned into bank collapses. We've never really recovered from that. People are saving money now, not maxing credit, and they since want a motorcycle that can do more than one thing... In 2005 I had 9 motorcycles, because I could have a bobber, a couple sport bikes, an adventure bike, and on and on. I still have 9 motorcycles, but I'm a gear head so that doesn't count. I digress. My riding friends back then had a sportbike, a dirtbike, a sport tourer... now, most of them have an adventure bike, or just a sport tourer as it can do most of that. Friends that had a dedicated track bike have returned it to street trim and are riding just the one bike now, or gotten rid of their track bike, and just ride their sport bike, and occasionally do a track day on it.

That seems more to me a function and result of simply growing up rather than economy changes. When you hit 25 it starts to click in your mind that not every day's a party and riding a race bike around all the time is miserable.

You are surely no economist. Debt is at an all-time high so your comment about savings is only partly true because of those who got a momentary boost from a false economy stimulus.
No matter what way you look at them sport bikes are a stupid buy. They appeal mostly to younger individuals with a juvenile mindset and less disposable income. Nearly half of the time I see sport bike riders on the road they are doing stupid shit. The statistics bear this out as Supersport riders die at a rate 4X that of other motorcyclists.
One can buy almost any liter ADV bike and get nearly comparable performance up to legal road speeds and actually have practical transportation with comfort for more enjoyable long distance riding.

I'm from Milwaukee so it took me a very long time to get over thinking motorcycles are all fat piles of shit that sound like garbage barges due to so much exposure to harley-davidson.

I was a sport bike kid who saw speed and specs and thought performance numbers as the only reason to buy a bike, but quickly came to resent the ninja 300 that i bought.
Motorcycling to me is about freedom, going out and doing what you want to do, going where you want to go, and being more present than you would be in a car. Speed feels good, but Freedom feels better.
I hated going on a ride just to have to turn around because the road turned to gravel, planning routes away from the highway because the bike was underpowered (i know that’s not a problem with bigger bikes but highways are still no fun), looking at places that would be amazing to ride to, but choosing not to because it’s 1.5 hrs away and my back would be Killing me.
Too many can’ts on sportbikes for me, maybe if i had a riding group and wanted to flex, but even then a hyper naked seems like all the flex you need.

Reading the comments and being old myself can really show the paradigm shift. Pre-2010s comfort was not as big a priority as performance and generally people were willing to make the trade off for more performance at the sacrifice of comfort. Now, not so much. Its not just sport bikes but static suspension lowering kits, manual transmissions(although automatics do perform better in certain situations), mechanical blow off valves, and even Jeeps. It's all about making the most comfortable ride while barely achieving the same result if at all. Not judging anyone or the overall shift in thinking. Just explaining. It goes way beyond "only one bike, must be a rolls royce seat to dialy" or "who needs a liter bike for a daily".
I personally ride a liter bike daily, love the feel, and no I'm not a squid. I also track it as often as I can afford it. I couldn't afford a daily AND a track missile so I compromised with what was most fun not most comfortable.

Although it deserves a mention that the used market is moving. I save every bike I like for sale on FB marketplace, and they usually sell within a week. Maybe it's a price problem or more realistically an economy problem.

Favorite bike I've owned has been an 07 MV Agusta Brutale 910r. Comfy liter bike. My first bike was an 05 636. I loved that bike but couldn't ride it for longer than 30 min.
I'd love to find an 06-08 GSXR1000, pull the fairings off and add a handlebar.

For me it was cartoons showing this rad dude on a bike that everyone showed respect to and then down the road my uncle got a r6 and kept bragging to my dad how much happiness he had, so he sold it to him and got a suzuki. Dad never let me touch it to prevent me from wanting to experience its joy. His fault, I now ride a R6 to experience their joy and soon my son will too

In Canada insurance plays a big part in why few people ride sport bikes. I'm a 21 year old guy, never been in an accident or had a speeding ticket and no insurance company would insure me on a 600. I wish we had bikes like the ZX25-R where young people can get a really great performing bike that can actually be insured realistically

I have a scout bobber and a MT10. I love both of them for different reasons. I've set then both up to be very comfortable for long rides yet can carve corners real nice.
Never would I ever buy a super sport bike just for street riding
