the table flip was 100% worth it hahahaha
9/10 table flip. Needs more drives on it. Sick video!
ME : Using only one SD card and a 500gb hdd
im gonna do 10 pushups every like this comment gets
200!!
Alright door dash
You must be ripped by now!
600ish?
Bro we need a video
Synology has been essential to my workflow. I currently have about 90 TB in my 8bay. I highly recommend getting a 10GB Ethernet adapter if you haven't already. I get around 600 MB read/write. Cheers bro! the table flip was much needed! :D
This is a great upgrade, what I would recommend - if squeezing a lot more out of the budget is an option - is an off-site storage in case of something like a fire.
2:42 we knew it was coming....
Don't forget offsite, offline backup of the data too. RAID is great but fire, ransomware, flooding, theft and power surge are still risks to take into account. I'd recommend a small UPS compatible with the NAS too to protect it from power surges and allow it to shutdown gracefully in case of power outage.
SSD's aren't very good for long term storage if they just sit without being powered on now and then. Same issue with USB-sticks.
Synology NAS's are awesome. Have been using them for 13 years now (several models and generations, from 2 to 12 disks). Not a single failure yet - except a couple of disks.
Yes. It’s all excellent advice except for when, god forbid, your house or apartment burns down. As previously mentioned, off site redundant storage is critical. I personally use Backblaze. It’s my last stand against complete disaster.
Yup - went with a similar NAS from Synology and I am loving it. Easy to expand and easy to use - but you're right, it was def super pricey. Best purchase I made so far for storing all of my video and photo work.
A+ for the staging.
Was in the same situation as you and bought a synology; one of the best purchases I've made. There's a slight bit of setup but once you've got it running it's so simple to use
Love that you did this two days after my primary Lacie HDD died and I lost it all
Are you gonna have some kind of cloud backup too? In case the box get damaged or stolen?
Very helpful info mate, appreciate the vid 👌
Thank you ver much, it was really helpful!!
Sick video mate love you stuff !!
You've succeeded in making this topic accessible.
You have made me get into photography at 10 years old but now I am 11 and I do car photography because of you and I use a Canon rebel t7 and hopefully I can get photos like you one day
I've used Synology NAS units for over a decade. They've never let me down yet.
The printing part was golden lmao
okey thats actually really good.
And yeah DATA is really important, and cloud based storage is also quite expensive. Especially since most of them dont have offers for more than 2 TB/person.
thank you for sharing mate!
I have been needing one of these for a while now. Got to go for it already because I have had one fail on me and loss client work(yeah it sucked)
I always wondered why you never got a proper nas like this. I always wondered where you stored the backup videos for your TikToks!
2:57 Great work!
I was wondering when the table flip was coming to play 😂
Mike how do we send RAWs through email if they're too big Gmail doesn't want to send them? Do we send you a link from drive?
I was eating while watching this video, and as soon as 2:43 came on, I literally choked on my food. 🤣🤣
The amount of times I have flipped the table in my head is crazy...
I had a great breakfast today bcs Mike uploaded new video!
Best table flipper on the net. Great video as usual.
bro wasted so much ink for that one bob photo 💀💀
Awesome bit of tech 😮
I'm sure youre really proud of the Table flip
Make sure you have an offsite backup for the nas too 😃
I think I watched you about 6 times fliping that table lol hahaha😂 gold!
I’m assuming you backed up all those drives first before tossing the table 😂😂
hahahahahahha the small details! I ❤ Nikon! and you can see the sticker is new 😂
Mike do you shoot lossless compressed on your Sony to keep the file sizes down? I already know you love that burst mode. lol
Those units are awesome!
If you really want it to be 99.9999% safe, buy another unit and have it at another persons house and make the units sync..... Or have your unit sync to someplace like Dropbox.
This gives you rock solid reliability and data security
2:45 really caught me off guard 😮
*OMFG, I just CHOKED on My Soda with that Table Flip with all the HAR DRIVES...lmao*
I really dont care about cars and storage, but there is something which always brings me back to his videos.
You can also set it up a SMB share so you do don't have to log into the Synology every time you want to access file
Thank you for not buying into the Jellyfish BS crap and went with a solid NAS solution thats not custom. Thanks for sharing good info. Guys don't forget to get caching drivers if you go this route and upgrade the ram if you can afford to do it. You can also add a DX1222 and go up to 36 drives on one system. Pretty robust and user friendly option.
We didn't get the slo mo desk flip 😂
do you store all raw's or exported jpgs?
So, is this kind of like your own personal in-house cloud storage? Like a tiny little personal data center?
Good video little man
2:55 - Meme perfectly recreated in 2024
hey mike, big fan from indonesia, by the way do you still have available raw car shots for us to edit?
you guys store your work? i finish a project, submit, and delete after some modifications, i barely keep the ones i like and the finished projects
You still only have a single copy of your data which is a risk, if your data is valuable you need at least 2 copies and one needs to not be in your house.
Synology make cracking NAS drives, you picked the right brand for sure.
Bit rot on hard drives is a real issue. you should shin up these hard drives on a regular basis.
Which model did you get
Love the solution, but pleae, don't forget to also have your most important files backed up on a cloud server (if you have Microsoft office you probably have 1tb of cloud storage already).
Backups are important, and you should never just rely on one solution ;)
my 4TB HDD died on me, and I was stupid enough to put my *ACTIVE* project there before it happened. Now I have an angry client chasing me ever since summer 2023
Fun fact. you can setup a Time Machine backup on your NAS
Sir, are you a photographer?
OMG epic flip. Brilliant move. Gonna result in a lot of video shares lmao.
are the hard drives okay?
You shouldn't have bought the synology drives, they're way too expensive for what they are. You could've used ironwolf pro drives, western digital ultrastar drives and saved a load.
Ahh snap I missed that part. Yeah there plenty of affordable drives out there.
Yepppp
The only problem with NAS is transfer speed limited by ethernet, editing 4K video in the nas is not so easy.
I don’t know if you’ll see this but what’s a good way to make simple money doing photography, I don’t need much as it’s not my full time job or anything, but any side money would be awesome
A NAS is exspensive but well worth it, I have a NAS from my old desktop amd in the 6 years of running it I've had 1 HDD fail.
my seagate one has just died on me this morning just before I was editing a new video :(
Dude, you need to backup offsite as well.
0:50 so you are saying you love red 😂
a 4tb samsung t7 shield is $290 in the states. $649 is crazy.
Why synnology over qnap?
Isn't there a big risk if you use public wifi for backing up to your NAS? Or do you have a dedicated VPN? Don't answer in the comments but think about it.
I think your better off backing up on 2 separate ssds while you're on the go or get extra sd cards
"What if 1 of the drives breaks one day?"
*proceeds to throw his whole archive of projects through the room for a two second bit*
Let’s be honest. This video was just an excuse to do another table flip
It's always good to see Mike fliping the tables, because it can only mean one thing: the start of something new and better!!! 😅Very good and informative video especially at the end with the summary of costs for several years!!! ❤These synology NAS's are very good, many many years of 0-24 operation without failure! At our university, only the cheaper ones had a failure after several years, but even then they were not beyond repair, they still work today! Mike just a tip: it's always worth keeping 1-2 replacement HDD's of the type you put in, in case 1 of the HDD's in the RAID volume should accidentally fail!!! It can save a lot of headaches and your dad can replace it if you are in another country! Overall they are very reliable and one of the best on the market! It is like a shoe if you outgrow it you can easily buy a bigger one!!! Keep it up man!!! 🔥
raid is not a backup
While I‘m interested in content like this, I don‘t really know anything about it. I guess iCloud is still to expensive to be worth even mentioning here at all ( plus the storage number is pretty low I think. But can someone tell me when spending 5k on something like this will be absolutely ridiculous? 5-10 years or more like 20?
NAS is the dream but if your house burns down you're SOL. Backing up is required but can get obscenely expensive. Keeping data safe is not for the budget minded lol.
imma take it for my kilobyte jpeg photos
That I ❤ Nikon 5TB 😂
Also get another nas for redundancycy
Sold, if it makes automatic coffee's... hahaha
SSD not necessarily more reliable. Harder to recover data if there’s an issue. Short term more reliable because harder to break. But if it does break it’s probably worst than a LaCie.
I don't know how much NAS drive pay you. But literally after table flipping scene. That will not be enough
I see Valterri Bottas copied your hairuct for the F1.
Buying the HDDs from Synology is the biggest waste of money, you can just toss in Seagate NAS drives
Did you brake up with Feay?
Welcome to the 21st century :D
Firstly raid is NO backup. If you accidentally delete something. Or an array can't resilver after a data mismatch or drive failure, your data will be gone. Unless you have actual backups of that data.
Then I get the synology choice. It is the easiest way. But don't forget it has never been the best, cheapest or most performing choice. Their own proprietary raid system has benefits but also downsides. For one their 'magic' as you call it isn't that special. It is just a multi disk raid array. Which you can achieve with any raid formatting.
I could go on about how synology products are incredibly overpriced, lack any flexibility in terms of hardware and software. Or about how you are very dependent on one single brand for your data safety, which won't give you any guarantee for any product support whatsoever in the coming 10 years. Does anything break on the synology device, you likely will have to replace the whole thing. And hope you won't have to pay for it all... As you see I could ramble on about what terrible choice synology is in my eyes.
But I get it. Synology is easy. And if you have money growing on your back and aren't really into diy building your own systems, why not. Just know Synology has huge downsides as well. On youtube especially it is so overrated... Know what is securing your data. Oh and BACKUP! RAID IS NO BACKUP
It's great you found a solution & hopefully it all works out. 👌 To be honest though, if you weren't shooting in 61 megapixels, you wouldn't be going through so many hard drives & would have more cash left over to afford more SSD storage, which is much more safer & reliable than any hard drive storage, because any real pro photographer will tell you that more megapixels doesn't guarantee great quality & efficient workflow. I understand this is very subjective & this is personal preference to everybody which s totally fine & definitely not putting it down in any way, & if 61 megapixels works for you that's awesome, & I understand the cropping advantage you get from it too. 👍
For me personally, I'd rather work smarter than harder, & the smarter way to work, long term, would be to shoot with less megapixels, because that's what is going to chew up most of your money regarding storage & everything else, & since most photos are uploaded to social media & compressed anyway, 61 megapixels is just too overkill, even for prints, & only serves ego & vanity...BUT!, that's just one dude's opinion, lol. 🙃 Keep up the great work.
Actually, SSD’s are not good for long term storage. They will lose all data if not used for a long period of time. HDD’s don’t do that and only start to corrupt files after years of heavy access. No one with several 5TB drives is accessing the data on most of them.
👋
it's not data mate, it's data
nice haircut tho
Sup
I use google drive XD
darta
ok one guy said he'll do 10 push up for each like and other said he'll do 11. I will DO 20push ups for each like.
You say data instead of data
Hey legend, let me paint a custom North borders Magic mouse for you :D
