The good thing about that kind of training is when shits real youre wet, cold, hungry, cut up, and still have shit to do you can always say "ive been colder, ive been wetter, and ive been more tired than this i can push on"
Earlier in my life I was homeless, this is how I see the world. Cold and wet enough for mold to grow on my clothes and hair while they were on me. Wasn't on drugs or none of that just in a circumstance that was out of my hands and had to figure my way out. So yeah nowadays if I'm in a corporate office drama or something devastating I think back to -10F and selling everything of sentimental value I could so I could afford a sleeping bag rated for freezing temps and sleep in a broken down car and then get another job etc etc. Took me about 2 years. Lowest temp I saw was -15F highest was 108F. Police almost killed me on Christmas Eve because they woke me up with a flashlight in my face not identifying themselves. When a work bathroom sink, socks, and sanitary wipes become gold, you find it very easy to quickly invalidate the importance of office drama or the anxiety of other's expectations. Knowing the difference between a real problem vs something someone wants you to think is a problem, is a true blessing. Meanwhile someone's having a tantrum because no one descaled the Keurig. Try hypothermia and no medical insurance.
I heard this was a method they used to break down terrorists psychologically to get them to talk. After they torture them for a bit if they still don’t talk they put them in a nice room with a Quran or something. Then take it away and continue the beat down.

It's not the same scale or intensity by any measure, but I remember in Marine Boot camp, as soon as you stop the bus it starts, then it's just constant. One place to another. I remember being in line to be assigned our uniforms and other gear, and it was probably 3am, you hadn't stopped for a couple of days, but the line went outside onto a loading dock. As I got out there, there was just a moment when the line stopped. I looked up at the moon, it was silent and felt the cool air and immediate threw up off the side of the loading bay. As soon as i did, the line started moving and it was like a film roll starting back up to full speed and the sound coming back to reality.. It was a strange moment of calm in what felt like chaos. Probably 10 seconds max, but I still remember the feeling.
I was in Coronado in I believe '94 as an army NCO. I bought pogey bait (Snickers bars) and the guys who were standing guard on the RB-15's at parade rest with a paddle would be outside waiting to get chow. I would catch their attention and flick a bar or 2 into the boat and they would hide it in the bottom next to the gunwale. Those eating chow were like zombies. Some guys getting fed by their classmates. If you make it to graduation, you have my utmost respect!
People’s biggest fear- Being uncomfortable. If you can make somebody tired, cold, & hungry, and then offer them sleep, warmth, & food? It’s like crack to an addict, You’ve got total control. Stripping away basic human necessities only to give them back is the most powerful leverage.
I did a similar thing with a diffrent military, its crazy when you look back at what you went though and kept going. We had 30 men at the start, and 6 ended the course. One part that got a lot of people was after 30 hours of brutality we all got on a bus. Had a 3 hour ride to the next area, got told to enjoy the view. At the end of the bus ride (most where asleep for 2.9 hours) we got out of the bus exactly where we started, and had to do a 20 question multiple choice test on the trip. I think it was about 10 people who got the boot from that. 4 months deep to fail for a nap.

I have gone through kinda this experience definitely not as freaking as hell week but a slow endurance and emotional mind bombarding environment in army school. Whenever I remember the glimpse I just get adrenaline rush
It's really a thought when you get to great lakes for boot camp. Do you or don't you want to push yourself, I wasn't prepare for that moment being fresh off the bus doing paperwork. So you really gotta know before you get to basic that you want to be a frogman. It does take dedication. It's not for some but only for one.

I’m not discounting how rough hell week must be but it would be interesting to hear about the British version as from what I’ve heard the British one make hell week seem like first grade in school.
