Is The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Worth The Price?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The 4Runner TRD Pro is a wonderful off-road capable vehicle. However, when it comes to on-road behavior it is far from perfect. The top of the line TRD Pro grade also normally comes with a lot of markup from the dealership, making the lesser grades seem more attractive. Is there enough in the TRD Pro to make it worth the price?

The 15 speaker JBL sound and Dual zone auto climate control are also standard on the PRO (like limited trim) compared to the trd off road.
Great review. I own a 22 sr5 premium 4x4. Gotta say I kind of disagree with the engine transmission not going together well. I think they feel perfectly connected and the shifts are about perfect. I guess if you compare it too todays 8 and 10 speeds then yeah it’s weird. But for this old driving design it’s one of the best.
Really great review on all the additional features that you get with the trd pro versus the other models
Thank you!
Does this guy have anything good to say about 4Runner’s in this video?
To me the 4Runner is the only legitimate SUV left. Personal opinion ofc.
There's also of course the tuxedo version in the GX. That's a land cruiser prado!
Paying 15k more for suspension.. u have alot more option with an SR5 😂 or TRD Off-Road
Why do these reviewers keep saying ONLY TRDs can go off road? Me and plenty of SR5 owners go off rd with ease. Engine/trans/4wd system/transfer case are all the same. Suspension is a little different but still very capable. Do more then just take what T4R they give you and spout what’s in the brochure ppl. Would u also say a jeep sport can’t go off rd as the lower level jeep trim? Smh
Trd sport 4runner just made it through some trails here in Ohio a few 4×4 colorados couldnt. Lol
ATRAC on an SR5 is massively capable.
I currently have a 20 Trd Pro and a 16 trail Ed. with kdss. I/we use the pro mostly for our travels and off road excursions. I like the fact that it’s old school and a very tough vehicle. So much that today I ordered another pro to replace my 20. I put on 20-30k miles per year. I did spec out a loaded 22 trd off road premium and it was just over $50k. The 22 Trd pro was $53,335 so NO it’s not a $10k difference. I like the pro suspension and a lot of other goodies you can’t get on the off road premium. The best bang for your buck is the regular off road. I do plan on some minor mods but nothing crazy. To me ….. I like the uniqueness of the pro. These are great off pavement vehicles for exploring. The SR5’s are very capable great value 4wd vehicles too. If you want a built tough road vehicle suv then you might want the limited.
Thanks for the great vid and the effort you put in. 👍🏻
Dude, it is now. Most Pros now are $10-$20k premium over MSRP. Good luck finding one for $53k
@@quantumdecoherence1289 in March 2022 there are two pro’s in Memphis selling for 65k (used 60,000 miles) and one for 71k. I found a off road premium for 47k yet several off road premiums here are mid 50’s right now. I hope to get the off road premium I found this week from the dealer since I put in an offer for it. At this point I do not mind paying the full 47k asking price since many used ones here are as much or more. I think I would rather have this than the new models coming out in 2023
@@quantumdecoherence1289 Just landed mine yesterday for $55,000. 2022 with 9 miles at test drive. Not bragging, just feeling incredibly lucky and fortunate.
I don’t like the big 20 inch rims on the limited. I also prefer the pro and regular grill. But if I find a good deal on a used limited I can fix all that
What's wrong with the TRD Pro ON-road? I would think it might ride even smoother than the limited.
Dealer mark up on trd pro is killing me.
Factssssss
GX460 is always the answer 😉
Looking at a 15 pro with 44k miles they want $41k!
My wife has a 2020 AG TRD Pro. I believe if you are going to mod a Pro, which I have seen people do, you are wasting you money. If you are going to mod, then the TRD Off-road is the way to go. It has the KDSS suspension which I was surprised that the pro didn’t. I have to say though, those Fox Shocks are killer. The main thing that I hate and really pisses me off is the fact is there are no exclusive TRD colors anymore. You can get Army Green or Lunar Rock on anything you want, so ya, they pretty much pissed off every TRD Pro owner with that.
I am very pleased with my 2019 TRd off road , the gas mileage is not that bad ...more pros then cons
This trim model is the best bang for your buck. Even if you buy preowned it’s the best price compared to SR5 and TRD Pro
Pro is better resale guaranteed. But after living with several versions of the 4Runner and the GX460 in the house... I would say that if you are gonna spend PRO money, pay a bit more for the GX460 for the V8 and 6-speed. The limited is actually the best all around for daily driving (not sure about the under powered statement as I don't see the need for more unless you are towing a lot of stuff) with a great price tag. You can do most trails on street tires on the limited, no need to overspend.
I don't know. I think it's hard to justify. Yeah you pay the premium for reliability, but a 5 speed transmission in 2021 should be a felony. The 4Runner cultists are also exceptionally happy that this platform finally got LED headlights, an updated head unit and Blindspot monitoring... Features that have been on other SUVs for 10 years now. I think it's hard to justify the full MSRP of a TRD Pro right now.
I have one, I bought it three years ago as a five-year-old used vehicle. At that point I could justify the engine/ transmission combo. No way could I spend new MSRP money for this engine transmission combo, I actually really dislike it. Don't get me wrong, it's reliable, it's just that the torque band and transmission gearing never seem to work together properly, it just never seems to be in the right gear.
I'm in the market and the problem I'm having is for the money they sell used everyone I looked at have dings in them or something that makes me say no. And I know buy new if you dont want to deal with that but these prices are crazy.
Great review. Something else worth mentioning is that the TRD pro comes with automatic & dual climate control while it is not even an option on the TRD off Road packages. I know it’s a small thing but for me it’s weighing on my decision.
what you said was spot on.. The pro is probably good enough and resale will be better on pro
Many people buy Pro and modify by replacing shocks etc which is totally none sense .
'18 TRD Off Road and absolutely happy.
Way over priced, used market is insane 57k for a used one. Might as well get a lexus gx460.
Used GX 460 better deal than used 4runners
Yes I believe its worth it, but not a penny over MSRP! Some of these dealers have lots their minds with their asking prices on these things...
I bought a 2022 TRD sucks having a 6 cylinder, they should have left an 8 cylinder in the higher priced ones.
You didn’t say the price?
i think the TRD pro is a waste of money unless your trying to brag or your buying to flip. instead buy a 3 year old TRD off road and spend the money on up grades if your keeping it for longer. my .02
No different than buying jewelry. Is it worth it to you? Depends. 👍🤪🏳️🌈
Worth it to me .... I love mine, BUT like stated in the review, I'm keeping the suspension that comes on the Pro. The OR Premium is a much better deal if you're going to gut the suspension anyway - and you could get KDSS if you wanted it. Not available on the Pro. This is my daily driver and my only vehicle, and I learned from modding vehicles-past that whenever you mod, you ALWAYS take a risk that you could be left with nothing to drive for a while. I don't care how good you are.
Lol this is very true. I’ve modded every vehicle I have until now. I’ve just purchased a 2022 4Runner TRD Pro and the only things I will ever add to it is the Pedal Commander and rock rails. All the vehicles in the past, even when modded by professional and reputable shops, always ended up in the repair shop at one time or another.
@@kimbuck-2 you can read it up on it but I don’t believe the pedal commander voids your warranty since it’s plug & play, and doesn’t modify your ECU. You can just unplug it before you go to the dealership for service. To be honest I wouldn’t have kept the 4Runner if not because of Pedal Commander. Coming from a Ford Raptor, the sluggishness of the 4Runner’s throttle body was just painful to drive.
Definitely worth it to me. I have a 19 Voodoo Blue Pro, and have no regrets in my purchase. It’s my daily driver, and it’s a blast to drive. Happy with my choice
The answer is yes. Always yes
Got a 2021 TRD Pro for MSRP last February and am very happy with it. No plans to do extensive mods. I put an aftermarket bumper and winch on the front. Love the suspension on road and even more off road. One other nice thing about the 4Runners is that the spare tire is under rather than behind the car, so makes it easier to use bicycle and motorcycle hitch racks.
Did you do anything to the suspension to handle the added weight of the bumper and winch …if so what? Thanks, we are waiting on a new 2022 Pro (wife’s new vehicle). She wants a winch/bumper. I’m told I’ll need to upgrade the front springs.
@@gsdlvr123 No spring changes. I have the Souther Style hybrid front bumper with a Warn winch. I haven't noticed any issues and I have been running that setup for at least 6 months. The bumper is probably on the lighter side compared to most.
Funny these reviews still happen on this relic - havnt changed in any real way since 2009 and engine is from 2002. Toyota are geniuses for selling a $35k SUV at $55k+, negating the need to a remodel.. oh check out the crash test videos.. whatever you do don’t hit someone you will be pinned between the dash and your seat lol
Why isn’t the TRD Pro offered with a third row of seats like the regular 4Runner?
My guess is that the models with the rear locker have reduced payload and the 3rd row adds a good deal of weight so the combo would be a pretty bad payload. Honestly the TRD’s have terrible payload d for that reason alone the SR5 makes a better proposition if you are using it as an overland vehicle since ATrac alone is really capable.
@@Kristian_Saile
But don't the trd pro's and off road Editions have the third row delete? That would make them better for overlanding since you can fit all your things and even car camp while out in the wilderness. Or is there an option for the Sr5 with 2 rows ?
@@lrodd247 the 3rd row is only available in the SR5 and Sr5 premium trims. The rear lockers take away payload rating and the 3rd row adds a decent amount of weight so I would guess that’s why they didn’t offer 3rd row on the models with rear lockers. The 3rd row is pretty efficient in how it folds down but still eats into your cargo space by adding something like a 3” higher floor in the back.
@@Kristian_Saile
Oh ok,That's what I thought. I think if you're riding solo or with 1 other person , then 2 rows would be perfect since you have all that extra room to use. I think that's the way I am gonna go. Thanks for your input, stay safe 😎👍
@@lrodd247 yeah with two people you have a ton of room. It’s interesting that the 5th gen has essentially the same interior space as an 80 series Land cruiser does. I ran an 80 series for over 20 years and it is crazy how much gear you can haul for 2 people, even sleep inside overlanding. I don’t think you can really go wrong on a 5th gen.
I just want a 4RUNNER! Because I want to go to The ❄ SNOW in Southern California...
Always wonder why nobody mentions the upgraded speakers that you get in the TRD Pro. Of the original equipment in my 2019 TRD Pro, I've only replaced the radio, the roof rack, the springs, and the headlights, tail lights and fog lights. My Fox shocks, tires, rims, and upgraded speakers are all staying. At the $45K that I paid for it brand new, I can't complain at all. It's a great truck.
Just bought the 2022 TRD off road with pro wheels black paint which looks amazing. Ordered some Toyota running boards and going to leave it at that for now. Think this will get me pretty much anywhere I want to go. Very happy with my choice.
I like your explanation! Very clear and easy to understand. New sub!
Hello Hansen, thank you very much for a really good video, I know this car does not come up with KDSS, what do you think it is less capable without the system?
He is correct if your going to lift it etc it's not worth it. If you're going to run it as is then yeah . Wheels tires shocks springs, upgraded stereo and the roof rack.
The KDSS in TRD Off Road format has fantastic handling on the road. Fyi
I feel your information on part-time 4 wheel drive is a bit misleading. sorry.
Heck where I live it's hard to find the higher end vehicles. My local dealership had one Tundra SR5. I can't even order
I love 4runner and i like the exterior style but its way too old interior to drive…so im planing to get all new tundra truck….
Trd pro if ur paying mrsp price. Got mines last year couldn’t be happier
So is the trd pro inferior to the limited or nightshade because it’s part time 4wd compared to the full time in the limited???
Got a SR5P two week ago and I should have gotten a TRD Off road.
love my 2016 trail with KDSS, I personly think the whole trd thing started with the trail addition with the KDSS. i dont think the trail ( trd off road ) get's the credit it deserves. the pro is an incredable truck, but saying that, most 4runner's are a capable vehical, Now if the pro had KDSS, i could understand the hype and cost and value of it, but it doesn't, wich is why i would keep mine or get the off road.
one of the reasons we chose the GX460 is because the "trd pro" lacked all the flagship 4x4 features
TRD PRO or go home
man those cheap headlights… smh. otherwise she’s a beast
Excellent review, Hansen! Very nice work as usual! =]
Nice job with the review of the TRD's.
It’s worth the price if shit dealerships don’t try to add “market adjustments” on top of MSRP. The 2022 is sweet! But I won’t pay a penny over MSRP! They act like Toyota doesn’t understand the market when they established MSRP for model year 2022. And the worst part is, suckers keep falling for it.
Totally. My local dealer added $3k "care package" on top of the $61k mark up. If chumps didn't jump at those prices, msrp would be the norm. There's another local Chicago dealer with one at $70k for ...wait for it... 2+ months. Ain't gonna sell. I'll add another ten to that and get a model X by Tesla which at least is technologically advanced enough to justify the cost. This is a twelve year old platform.. It's just stupid.
It's supply and demand
Just like a rolex watch
Quick answer; nah fam
Whats the highest inch circumference tire that can be installed on a T4R?
Generally, 285/70r17 is the max recommended size.
Went to a dealership to look at a 22' Trail Edition and they wanted 51K for it. These prices are insane. I asked about the Lime Rush TRD PRO just for shits and giggles and they said 73K! Like are you kidding me??
Had the same issue with the Lime PRO and the guy marked it up to $61k then, as if that wasn't enough, added another $3k for a ceramic coating and seat protector. What a joke. Told him to keep it. Bought a Lexus R350 instead. Most people don't off road these anyway.
Yup, where I live they are asking for 78k…
quoted me 55k
Times are surely tough. I recall refusing to pay $50K for a brand new 2019 4R TRD Pro in Voodoo Blue because I don't believe in paying extra for a slutty color. Instead, I got my preferred Midnight Black for US$45K. If I REALLY wanted the exclusive color these days, I wouldn't pay more than US$52K to account for inflation. Anything more is highway robbery.
I bought a 2022 Toyota 4runner TRD off road premium Barcelona Red with upgraded pro wheels and skid plates. 51k out the door. Upgraded tires BF Goodrich KO2's right away. This is a bad ass truck!!!
Should talk more about how to modify a TRD off road and make it better than pro for less money
I was thinking to get a Limited but now I am having second thoughts.
I have the Lunar Rock, it’s dope… I drive my 2020 raptor more
Looking to get my first ‘22 4R TRD Sport/ Off-road for a year until the new model is available.
TRD PROS in SoCal are so ridiculously overpriced.
I’m not sure where you’re at in SoCal, but I got my 21 Pro Lunar Rock for MSRP at Tustin Toyota in OC
When did you buy tho ? We just sold the last one made at $70,000 to a lady in Italy that won't even be here until January and she was ecstatic. Any toyota at msrp right now would be an insane deal as their used counterparts from 2019, 20, and 21 are all worth more than msrp of a new car so all new cars are adjusted accordingly. You got a steal if you bought that anytime after June really . Used lunar rock pros certified from Toyota are worth high $60ks right now
If you really want one, you have to look out of state. I really wanted a army green TRD Off-road but every dealership in CA was already pre sold or selling for 8-15k over MSRP. I found one for MSRP from Fitzgerald Toyota in Maryland and had the car shipped out. The shipping was extra but it was still plenty cheaper than buying one in CA
I’m in SoCal and yes prices are crazy. But if you can wait it out something has to give. I see more than 500 used within a 100 miles of me with 50k miles or less. Half have 25k miles or less. They don’t seem to be flying off the lot. What happens to all these going into 2022?
I got lucky last year I had a van that the dealer wanted for another client and I had told them I was looking for a trd pro and they happened to have one on its way. Worked out a deal so I basically got it for 51k. I basically leased the van for a year. Hope u find one 🤞
Lets get the basics right if you want to convince people you know something about autos. First a crossover is a suv as well. You mean “truck” not suv. A truck has a body on frame where a crossover or unibody is frameless. Also the term you are looking for is trim not grade. The TRD Pro is a trim level. Who knows what else you missed. I tuned out mid way.
