I am a huge Sykes fan, but Tony and Carmine are absolutely incredible too. Their playing as well as their singing is top notch. This lineup of Blue Murder is and always will be epic.
You can’t find true talent like this today…. Recording execs and management really gave their backs to a powerhouse group…. Blue murder literally was murdered…. What a shame!!!!
Just look at the sheer talent on display here. John belts out high volumes. Tony plays and sings 2:46 - 3:00 while barely looking at his fretless bass. Carmine and his drumstick stuff. It's all pure class.
All Blue Murder fans should check out Tony Franklin's channel. He is a very cool person and he has a couple beautiful versions of this outro bass part he did live there. Check him out!
John Sykes should’ve been a rock god. He wrote and performed on Whitesnake’s fantastic (and huge selling) 1987 album, and then was fired by David Coverdale, along with the rest of the band. Blue Murder’s debut album was killer but then times changed and grunge became “the thing.” Time is the true test and all these years later Sykes’ music holds up strong.
sykes didn't get "grunged"... BMs debut got sidelined by Geffen when Coverversion whined. releasing a 7-minute song as the leadoff track didn't help either... jelly roll was the follow up but mtv slept on it because valley tanked.
I was 30yrs. old when this album came out. Saw their video one night on, MTV. I think I went out and bought their album the next day. And honestly, it is one of my all time favorite albums. Hard to top talent better than this. Thanks guys for an album that will always bring me much pleasure🖒😁💕💕.
I was 25. I also went out and bought the tape the next day after seeing Valley of the Kings on MTV. A few years later I upgraded it to the CD which I still play to this day.
Tony Franklin about this: "Jelly Roll “live”, 1989. The music was recorded in a studio a few days before (the TV show wouldn’t let us perform live for some reason!). Vocals are live. The arrangement is different and is exactly how we played it at shows. In hindsight I think it would have been nice for John to go onto electric towards the end so we could solo out! Still cool though. Enjoy!" Needless to say, the vocals are spot on.
There's not such such thing as "efforless and sublime natural talent". A lot of hard work and effort behind this work, wich is what a lot of artist lack these days
Wow just watched with amazement John's voice is amazing, a real talented guy who is so dearly missed performing live, come back with Blue Murder II, great songs and great line up. What a brilliant musician.
*You forgot to name Carmine Appice in the description..., a rockstar drummer and singer that has had a longer and more extensive career than either Sykes or Franklin... Hell..., he was already a rock star back in the 60's with The Vanilla Fudge, then Cactus, then Beck, Bogart, & Appice, then Rod Stewart, and then King Kobra, all before being a co-founder of Blue Murder...*
It's a damn shame these guys didn't get the recognition as a band they deserved. Great music, musicianship, lyrics, and vocals, they deserved much more!
Simply awesome!! What a cool badass band were Blue Murder.. and John ,well we all know he comes from another planet!...he's one of the greatest musicians of all time...Thanks for all your amazing songs and killer guitar playing maestro Sykes!
is or is not true that J Sykes deserves a single genre or directory in the hard rock, blues, and superband topics of the music?? one of a kind Mr Sykes!!!
I just wish that I could say that he didn't need Carmine & Tony. That's the best rhythm section ever ...FUNKY & heavy and endlessly interesting and the really CAN sing. Kudos to John for realizing that. I haven't heard anything he's done approach this line up of equals for Johns unique and amazing songs and voice...but it had to be the 3. I've worked with Carmine since 2005...he doesn't just "play the drums" and Tony is my favorite bass player.
This song is 8/10. Best songs ever? Something of Beatles, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Led Zeppelin, enough? I say this and I love Hard Rock and Heavy Metal... This song is so good, underrated, and what you want, but to be the best song ever you need more melody, you need what Sykes hasn't ;-), and not because he's bad!
JOHN SYKES is a fantastic singer. Totally underrated besides his guitar play extraordinaire (also with WHITESNAKE). A wonderful soul drunken voice. Both BLUE MURDER albums with bass man TONY FRANKLIN and drummer CARMINE APPICE are fantastic Metal releases with a special Progressive Flair. Totally underrated albums, real gems with a fantastic sound production.
Amazing that Sykes was not considered to be the lead singer it was Tony Martin and Ray Gillen but they left and John Kalodner persuaded Sykes to do it because he sang on the Demos
One of the most underrated trios in Rock N Roll history. The Blue Murder album was a straight shot to my system. I just had to take it all in totality that he did the music on the Whitrsnake album and a few years later put out another gem. I was and still remain blown away by this man. David Coverdale needs to be ashamed that he was so damn insecure that he booted him and the band before the album came out. He knew John would dwarf him on stage if they ever played live together.
Bought this album when it was first released, amazing material. I hear this performance of Jelly Roll, and wonder How are American Idol and The voice doing any business?!? Not one of those kids can sing like this, and technically Sykes is just a backing vocalist!
John Sykes’s stellar vocals and sensational guitar warrior that he is along with a killer lineup of top notch musicians results in an unforgettable performance 😊💛
This dude John Sykes is multi talented and sings amazing as he plays Guitar , which isn't easy to do playing this song . Crazy how some Country Band / Solo Artist didn't grab this song as a Cover for the last 30 years at least . This song would be a great Country Line Dancing song .
I love the VHS icons at the start. PLAY SP lol. RIP VHS. This band had talent like crazy. Carmine appice, tony Franklin on amazing fretless bass, and Sykes on vocal and guitar. Has to be the best trio band I've ever heard
Yeah this is good but having seen Sykesy as a 23 yr old as a young kid aged 15 when he rejuvenated Lizzy in 83 I will never forget how much of an awesome Guitarist he is !!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there any wonder Coverdale fired this guy after they finished up the 1987 album? He does vocals almost as well as he does guitar, and that's saying a lot.
I remember seeing them about this time opening for Billy Squier at a small club in San Francisco, And it was a small audience that night. I totally dug it and had followed John Sykes career from Tygers of Pan Tang to Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott encouraged him to sing lead vocals by the way to Whitesnake and eventually Blue Murder. And I saw Tony Franklin live with The Firm both tours in the US great player and I have seen Carmine live with various bands, It was great then still is now. But never achieved the commercial success of other in my opinion lesser talented groups of musicians.
I love your comment slopitch, you nailed it. Timing is everything. John Sykes is a wonderful song writer, fabulous singer, great guitar player and the hottest guy to me since back then. (I love blondes and blue eyes..rare but he's even moreso)
Coverdale's singing potential does not come anywhere near Sykes. Sykes can belt out his songs LIVE too, unlike Coverdale can. The musical integrity that Sykes has is immeasurable compared to a lot of musicians. He's an instrumental and vocal genius.
i think Geffen really pushed Coverdale /Whitesnake.....unlike John....Coverdale has a very unique mid tone croony bluesy moody rock voice....distinct....but i think Sykes as a Singer/Song writer and brilliant guitar player was one big package. ...bad management at the time...he should be a household name too!
Like....Coverdale thinking to himself? This guy is better lookin, better singing, and can effing smoke the guitar! Better get rid of him?? Outside lookin in perspective?
John... No fuckin' solo man? REALLY?!?!?!? WTF??? DUDE??? You are John Sykes. You have to solo. This was an excellent version that was incomplete without the solo.
Thank you, John Sykes, for giving us some the best music of the 80's!

Blue Murder was and is a treasure! A reunion would be a blessing!
Check out Tony's UA-cam channel. He's a very cool guy and legendary bass player!
sign me up! But Carmine is 77 and I'm not sure how agile he is these days.
So underrated this band was.

Walter....again....look at the SHEER TALENT here. I met Tony AND John....Tony is a great guy!
Rock perfection!
And... they all sing!! So so underrated, what a shame... It was either a one time project only or simply bad management...
Yeah everything about this trio is amazing. The Older I get the more I realize
Performers like these don't exist anymore. They should be treasured.
Pretty sure their lip syncing
THIS, kids is a BASSIST. Tony Franklin
Has a great channel on UA-cam too! Very cool bloke!
He's a monster on Bass. Top of the Top
Saw him with The Firm and was blown away. Then with Blue Murder. Amazing player!
John's voice is amazing.
John is an Amazing talent. Vocalist extraordinaire, Les Paul MASTER 💯 I JUST WISH HE WOULD PLAY LIVE AGAIN ❤️
There is not a hard rock or metal band today that can sing worth a shit compared to this. NONE!

John sykes has such a powerful voice

The most underrated supergroup bands in rock history.
Such a powerhouse band. They should have been massive
This is a phenomenal performance. Even better than the studio recording

Wow, still impressed after all these years
Tony Franklin is just amazing on bass. Just magic with John Sykes.

Great 🎸 talent from a brother musician love it HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR YEARS
Amazing to realise this was the first time John was lead vocalist in a band. He is amazing.
From 3:55-4:35 is one of Sykes best vocals. Absolutely love that!
OMG do you see ANY bands like this nowadays? Nope. Classic. amazing. Talent. Period.
Unbelievable version of this great track. John's vocal really shine here!
Those backing vocals 🔥!!
Greatest underrated talent of the late 80's. Sykes is a genius and the reality behind virtually every Whitesnake hit.
Wow just watched with amazement John's voice is amazing, a real talented guy who is so dearly missed performing live, come back with Blue Murder II, great songs and great line up. What a brilliant musician.
Tony Franklin is the most tasteful fretless player.
Carmine needs more credit as a singer. Always been a great harmonist. Can write songs, too!
For me, one of the travesties of music. Literally killed off by Grunge, Nirvana, overnight.
John and the guys should have been massive.
