I live in southern Nevada. Here are the two main things I believe everyone should understand before deciding to relocate to Las Vegas: 1) Many Las Vegas jobs are related to the hospitality industry (motels, restaurants, car rentals...) and/or entertainment (gambling, big shows, stripper bars, tours...) and when tourism is off because of a pandemic or other economic downturn many local jobs disappear and 2) Las Vegas house prices vary widely with a kind of boom and bust cycle every ten to fifteen years (never buy a new home at the top of the market, just rent a place and wait for a big drop in the economy and then buy a bank foreclosed house). So, if you are self-employed and can work from home anywhere in the U.S. via the internet or are retired with a good pension, a downturn of the local tourism-based economy should not adversely impact your income/lifestyle. And if you can wait until the local housing market enters the bust part of the boom and bust cycle, you can get a lot more square footage for your money.
By the way, Las Vegas has a busy modern airport, so if you get restless and want to visit another city where it rains/snows/has lots of lawns, just fly there instead of driving for half a day or longer.
There is plenty to do outdoors during cool winter weather in the desert around Las Vegas if you like to hike, mountain bike, camp, rock hound, ride a horse, do nature photography, prospect for gold, off-road in an ATV, etc. The U.S.'s second largest wildlife preserve is just north of Las Vegas. Lake Mead is nearby if you have a fishing boat. Quartzsite, AZ is about a day's drive away if you want weeks of inexpensive RV camping on public land during the winter.
The easiest ways to meet Las Vegas residents are to join a local house of worship or become a volunteer with a local chapter of a charity organization. Forget about hanging out at sidewalk cafes every day or being able to walk from your apartment to the corner coffee shop or bar --- Las Vegas is not Paris or NYC -- it's freaking hot here during the summer and everyone who can do so stays indoors in the air conditioning during the summer.

You hit a nail on the head. I can’t believe you got me! Lived here the longest 4 years of my life- got to the lowest point of my life-not financially but emotionally and mentally. The city is extremely isolating, dull and boring. If you are outdoorsy and not a partier -stay away. This is the most disconnected from nature I ever felt in my life and I spend more time outside then most. There’s no grass, you won’t be walking barefoot -there’s just dust and rocks and asphalt everywhere. People don’t small talk- it’s normal to just stare at your neighbors but no hi, no wave no nod or anything. I talk to a lot of strangers in the stores just cuz I need some socializing and majority are moved from somewhere else and consider Vegas comfortable but least favorite place to live. They kind of get stuck here for a lot of years, sometimes forever. Vegas is really high on suicide rates. If you have anxiety or seasonal depression-stay away because it will become permanent. There’s some amazing business connections to be made tho. So if you want to network-good place to be maybe for a season.

My Aunt is from Massachusetts and met my Uncle who grew in Vegas. They will be married 29 years this year. My aunt never moved back to New England but, still misses the four seasoned weather. It is true however Vegas housing will continually rise as newcomers continue to move in from all over. I used to live in San Diego, Tampa but, being that its a very slow lifestyle and with the boring hot weather all year round, I am glad I moved back to ny home city of Boston, MA. I missed the season, my fam and friends. Yes its getting more and mire expensive up here but, I am finding that the affordable housing crisis is happening all over. Plus I couldn't imagine moving again (cost me both times on average 5k to 10k) I think I am staying put. Las Vegas seems fun but, since I don't drive, I would rather suffer the long cold winters, humid summers, be close to public transit and would rather walk than drive. I think I'm good for now.

I live in there and this depiction is very biased. California sucks more than ever and where else are you going to get all these great shopping, restaurants and shows on such a small land area?
Cost of living is inexpensive. Not visually pleasing? At night, the Strip is one of the most beautiful downtown in the USA (Ok it is subjective). You have not mentioned Summerlin: clean, nice parks, greats views, best shopping and walking district! West Henderson with the best views on the Strip.
Real estate is still inexpensive (even with 1% Prop Tax) compared to any other location that would have similar shopping, restaurants and shows within 20min drive! The weather is great 9 months per year and utilities are not very expensive. Traffic is a dream, they kept increasing the capacity of freeways in the past 8 years. South Nevada has better freeways than all surrounding States.
Heat in the summer: you get used to it (Phoenix is hotter) but at least we don't get fires nor strong earthquakes! Personally, i can't stand the humidity of South Eastern States.
Park City is 6hrs drive, Phoenix 5 hrs, San Diego 6hrs, i agree with you about driving to L.A. it is a nightmare take a plane if you need to. Locally you have nice sights at Mount Charleston and Red Rock park that you did not mention. Plane tickets are inexpensive. Best Hotels deals in the US.
You are right about education, there are only 8 great HS/Academies in the Valley. Nowadays, with dumb stay at home schooling, not sure that the national ranking means anything.

Reasons to not live in Vegas
    1. Low wages
    2. Almost never rains
    3. Car insurance is extremely expensive
    4. It’s a racist city despite being very diverse
    5. It’s liberal
    6. The most ignorant people I have ever met (Nevada is ranked 48th in education)

    8. Food is gross (hardly any good BBQ or Mexican restaurants)

The reason why the schools have bad ratings for graduation is if you leave their school before you graduate you’ll be considered a dropout which brings their ratings down.

    • @sexygeek8996
      @sexygeek8996 3 роки тому +4

I don't think the ratings are very important to begin with. After you leave school (whether graduating or dropping out) nobody will care which school you attended. American and Canadian schools have very low standards compared to most of the world anyway and I believe that is mainly because kids think that education is "uncool".

Reno NV is a much better choice to live in Nevada. It's not as hot, the people there are much friendlier, it's close to the desert but not right in the desert like Vegas. It's close to the mountains and lake Tahoe. Vegas doesn't have anything like that nearby. Lake Mead isn't a high mountain lake with lots of trees and wintertime skiing like Tahoe. Plus Reno has alot of entertainment vtoo for a small city just not all the big fancy nightclubs like Vegas. I always wondered why they never built Reno up to rival Vegas though with a similar strip and over the top nightlife or a Disney sized amusement park to throw in the mix.

Every time he mentions the size of a metro area, I kind of roll my eyes. MSAs in the United States are defined by counties. The Las Vegas metro area consists of one county. Most of it is barren. I'm sure there is a lot of sprawl in Vegas though, kind of like Phoenix.

    • @sexygeek8996

@@sexygeek8996 yes, technically the whole county is in the metro area because of how they are defined by the government. but obviously that doesn't mean it's all urban/suburban and exurbs. some of that area is just part of the county. so the physical size of a metro area is pretty much completely irrelevant.

I feel this rush to Las Vegas will only last so long. Its cheaper that other places close to it in the West provably cause less people live in the general area, but this is cause its in a dessert and and population increases, cost of living will go way and even though entertainment is a big industry, it's realky the only big industry there, and tourism can usually only support populstion well up to a certain size, and with the bad education anlong with that Las Vegas may not have been good for much else in the first place, diversification will be difficult
