I've lived in many cities, I'm originally from NYC. San Diego is a great place to live and visit. I've lived here 15 years no regrets. It's shortcomings are expensive housing, brush fires/pollution, and the homeless (if you live Downtown, or in Ocean Beach). I disagree that the residents are jerks. In addition to great year round weather, it's a biodiversity hot spot you can go to the beach, the desert, and the mountains for snow in the same day. I have lived in San Diego since 1986. I absolutely have a deep love of the city. I’m now a bit older, so I rarely take the freeways anywhere, I just allow extra time and take side streets most places. The freeways are absolutely terrifying!
I live about 10 min from the beach, which I appreciate so much. I really do. I’m so grateful to live in a beautiful place, I’m on the beach 3 to 5 times per week. Every week.
Sadly, I’m moving to the Midwest this year. I would prefer to stay. I play lotto every game, in hopes I’ll hit it big enough to stay for retirement.
Although I have worked full time 40-70 hrs per week since I was 16, I’m currently 59, I just have never been able to save enough to purchase a place, and have very little savings. Cost of living is so high, I have to work 60+ hrs per week to keep my head above water.
I live in a very old apt, very modest, no a/c, no range, no dishwasher, and my rent is $2100 per month. That’s why I live where I do. If I wanted a nice, a/c range, dishwasher, it would be $2800-$5000 per month. Depending on area. I just paid my bills today, my gas/elec bill was $157, my spectrum basic cable/internet bill is $211, my Verizon mobile phone is $154, water/sewer/trash bill $65 , auto ins $134, and fuel is $4.75 per gal for regular, so $200 per month. If you add my car payment and groceries another 1,000 per month. So just in living expenses $5,000 per month. I live very modestly. I work about 60-70 hrs per week. I’m tired. I don’t want to work this hard anymore. I’m still very healthy, actually love to work, however I’m ready to slow down to 30-40 hr work week. Lol. I could not survive here on a 40 hr pay check. So if I want to stop working 60+ hrs per week, I’m moving to Midwest. I’m actually excited about it. I will miss San Diego, my husband and many friends are buried here, tons of memories, but I can live very comfortably on 30-40 hr pay check there, and if I take my retirement at 67, I could afford to quit working all together, but I probably won’t. But at least I could drop back to part time, and still be comfortable. I’m looking forward to 4 seasons, and easier work life.

This is wrong on so many levels. I lived in SD for five years and only moved to LA because of the type of work I wanted to do, but I will always regret leaving there. Pollution? Seriously? Nah-ah. Yes, traffic can be a bitch but just like any other large city, you learn the times and traffic patterns. And sorry, but the Mexican food is better in San Diego than LA. San Diego is a vacation paradise but I never noticed tourists. Heck, my wife and I are tourists there a couple of times each year and we get treated very well by the city's service industry. Frankly, the weather is better there than anywhere else I've ever lived, which includes three other countries and 12 states. And there are lots of places to visit. The beach cities, La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, downtown, Coronado Island, Balboa Park, and beyond. There's just one problem with it. It's in California. Which means it has high taxes, leftwing politics, a homeless crisis, etc. But if I had to move to a relatively conservative state with crappy weather like Arizona, Texas or Florida, I'd still choose San Diego. Don't need the 9 months of 100+ degree temperatures in AZ, the rain, humidity and tornadoes of TX, or the rain, humidity and hurricanes of FL. San Diego is Goldilocks. As for the lack of seasons, that's what traveling is for.

I'm from San Diego, born and raised, the biggest problem here is that over the years so many people came here to visit and forgot to go back home. I’ve lived in San Diego, Dallas, and Miami and would say San Diego is the best if you can afford it. San Diego jobs tend to pay more so that helps offset the housing costs. The reason everything is so expensive is because they keep voting in liberal Democrats in all the large cities.

LA is polluted and homeless LA can't compare to San Diego. There is a reason south orange county is better than north. It is because north orange is closer to LA while South orange county is closer to san diego and has one of the lowest homeless rates in cali I dont see any. North orange county is LA but a little better. So you see the closer to san diego the better.

I grew up in San Diego, I am 21 years old. The cheapest place I can find is 1,200 dollars for a STUDIO. I have to work 2 jobs for at least a year to be able to save enough to manage that cost. Nice beaches, great weather, people are extremely friendly: but it's so hard to manage yourself financially but definitely not impossible. Make sure you have a good job and have a good chunk of money saved and don't mind the crowds or traffic.

I absolutely love San Diego. Due to the perfect weather, everything is geared toward being outside. Nice beaches, parks, restaurants and close to LA and Palm Springs if you need a quick get-away. But you definitely hit the downsides. Cost, traffic, homeless, and tourists. SD is also conservative and has no pro football team.

I recently moved out of SD having lived there the past 5 years. Here's my take...
    Pros:
    Perfect weather
    Dog friendly
    More relaxed/healthy lifestyle
    Great Mexican food/sushi
A bar for every pro sports team
Eye candy (it's ridiculous how attractive the women are)
    Downtown is easily accessible
    Beaches
    Made some great friends
    Cons:
    Rent/Gas/Food prices
Douchebags galore (you have to weed out the flakes)
Perfect weather does get old (I loved when it rained)
It's not THAT big (after a while, I realized that there's just as many places I'd avoid than I would visit. Looking at you East County)
Overall, I had an amazing time living there and miss it a lot. Hopefully one day I'll be back, but I think I'll start my next chapter somewhere else.
