one summer i worked at the factory assembling Midiverbs II's in the late 80's, it was a tedious boring job, but fun coworkers, anyway, for fun we used to write little messages inside the units, so check it out, lemme know ;) nice demo BTW!
you probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a tool to get back into an instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Kaiser Brett i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Kaiser Brett It worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
@Darren Sean Glad I could help :D
that’s actually so cool and wholesome
Bloom mode on the midiverb is soooooooooooooooooo heavenly
It’s kind of ironic that the very effect that made the staple sound of the genre… isn’t a pedal at all…
Hey guys, I recently released a new song with my project Unkenny Valleys. Feel free to check out my Spotify releases: open.spotify.com/artist/0gfD45qUc1GosaEOy5pT6R?si=ttEzO6KUTa6bHUwoWH43oQ
Another great video from you. Worth waiting for so long.
Thanks!
Lol. Back in the early 90s, I used to use parallel 4th power chords with a tremelo arm to try to replicate Shield's sound. I met Billy Corgan in August of 2000 and he was saying he used a lot of reverb. Funny.
I love your videos man, thank you so much for sharing all this info!
I searched and scoured for the RV-7 and Finally got one. Thanks for the video,it must have stuck in my subconscious
Great demonstration of reverse reverb. I was trying to figure out what Shields was talking about when describing it. All sounds great with a Fender amp.
Thank you, it's been a challenge for me as well to figure it all out. And yeah, Fender is still my amp to go. What amp do you use?
Thanks for the video, I actually have a Cathedral and a Midiverb II, will definitely be experimenting today!
Sounds a lot like mild high club. You start to get that Dan electro feel with this effect. Never even knew reverse reverb existed until a few minutes ago, but it's really cool.
I own a fx500 and it sound fucking amazing. If you find one on ebay or reverb or something like that and your a massive shoegaze fan, buy it
Thank you, Kenneth!
Love how you customized your guitar, that feather 💙
Thank you for your videos. They are very informative!!!
So happy I can help.
Got a Jay Turser Mustang copy and a Digiverb coming in the mail. I'm so ready to start 'gazing! Currently I only have a DOD Metal Distortion from the 80's, but it has tons of low-end; perfect for songs like Sometimes.
I love your videos buddy, I remember watching this one over and over before ordering my first reverb pedal years ago now. One aspect of the Cathedral demo that should be mentioned is that you never actually turned the pre-delay off, as far as I can tell. Now, if the pre-delay knob is set to something above zero when you turn the pedal on, I think it might actually stay disengaged until you wiggle the knob (I'm having trouble remembering) - but it actually did sound like yours was enabled right from the get-go. When the knob is in the 7 or 8 o' clock (10-30% ish) range, the pre-delay is very very short, such that your eyeballs or camera might not actually pick up the delay light flashing cause it's flashing too rapidly. You will most *definitely* hear the difference in your signal though, as you're overlapping a few dozen reverberations rather than just one, for a much more dramatic effect - fatter and more washed out. A very rapid, modulated delay fed into a distortion (or vice versa, to taste) is actually a great way to achieve some beautiful soundwalls without using reverb at all - or, acoustic purists might argue that a wash of short delays doesn't just approximate a reverb, it literally *is* an emulation of reverberation like you'd hear in a cave or cathedral, as it were....
I love your videos Kenneth!
🙏❤
your dry tone is amaizing, man
Great video, thanks
I find such strange inspiration from this channel. I primarily mess around with high gain intricate riffage, but I jumped on the chance to buy a Cathedral off an old friend recently and have been 'gazing. Cool to see the inclusion of its analog sound contrast and especial kudos for being so honest in your assessment.
aamado1013 IT IS NOT ANALOG!
super cool vid! You got da best vids
Thank you man!!!
Thanks for this demo ☺️
Happy you like it. :)
despite the volume-drop, i think the Digiverb is the most musical sounding of the 3 pedals... comparing the depth and modulation of the 100% wet signal
I think it sounded the best also
If you dig the cathedral but don't want all the other features or don't have room for it, the holy grail max has a reverse setting as well. I actually got rid of my digiverb for it.
Thanks for putting this together. Just got a Digiverb based on this and your other clips to put at the front of my chain and am loving it so far (minus the volume drop). Finding it has a musicality that the reverse and gates in the CD-R-70 don't have, nor the Big Sky.
Hey - nice to hear that. Yeah the volume drop was making me crazy sometimes. But it is still a high quality pedal with a unique sound. Good choice!
to fix the volume drop, chain it with a volume pedal and hit both at once
The most genuine one, shoegaze-wise, is de Midiverb II, of course. The one Kevin Shields used.
Love this channel! Keep up the great work 😁❤
THAAANK YOOUU!
very nice...dig you man
Gonna look into that Polara. It is reasonably priced.
14:13 yeah that's astounding
mercurialmagictrees seconded
Thank you for the vid, I was about to sell my Cathedral 😌
i used ONLY a Midiverb IV (and an SD-1 with an e-bow) on all the ‘England in 1819’ albums to create most of my ethereal long-throw sounds. It is totally programmable, just takes time to edit then save. Insanely versatile PROGRAMMABLE reverses.
Awesome demo :-)
thank you Doug!
Great comparison video man. Thanks.
one small note: Cathedral is not analog but all digital reverb like the others. Actually there is no such thing as analog reverb pedal except those big ones which feature a real spring inside. Cheers :)
So good that you tell me that. thank you. I was also a bit sceptical. Once someone said to me all gear by EHX would be analog. Now that I think about it... makes absolutely no sense. :D I will write that in the discription.
Brilliant comaparison! I use an EHX Cathedral. Subscribed!
The cathedral have shimmer????
Im running a danelectro backtalk into a midiverb 2,sounds really fn cool, playing a dano/coral sitar and a squier bass vi.
Ive been using a homemade pedal thats just 2 rehoused behringers combined,hm2/fz6 clones made blendable with single inputs and outputs.
And plenty of other pedals at other times lol.
Im looking forward to my shields blender preorder to come, that thing sounds so nasty.
Digiverb is great pedal! Good price and quality (and weight 😃 )
Tried them all as well as the Yamaha spx90 besides the Cathedral. Obviously the Yamaha's are awesome but crazy expensive. Midi verb II blows everything else out of the water IMO. They are probably the cheapest one to buy as well. Spend the extra to buy the midi verb II if you are thinking about purchasing the digitech digiverb - it's well worth it.
14:05 Shimmer and Delay sounds like something that Robin Guthrie liked using a lot. Listen to "Pink Orange Red" by Cocteau Twins, (reverse reverb on Liz Fraser's voice at first vocal entrance too).
maskof good observation!! I love that song
You are just the cutest 💕
the yamaha fx500 is amazing to have and the reverse is amazing
It's so great!
anyway thank you for uploading the video
For punters on a budget check out the Marshall RF-1 Reflector, they are pretty cheep and also have a reverse mode :D
TheeTurkey79 Yeah! If you guys are looking for cheaper options Of gated reverb, check out the Boss RV-5 or even the Behringer DR600 - witch is a clone of the Rv-5. The Rv-5 came out on the same time as the hardwire Rv 7 and has awesome reverb sounds! The hof also has a stunning Gated reverb, both v1 and v2, and it’s customizable, bit pricey, but wonderful quality
Yes dude, Digiverb all the way
FOHTEE BACHS
Hi again :-) Do you remember what Elliot of Ringo Deathstarr had his Alesis's effects number set to? 40-49 Was it the same on both or were there two different effects (like 42 on one and 47 on the second). I just got my second Alesis MIDIVERB II. Thanks for all your help in the past and keep up the great work!!
f'ing interesting clean signal!
Robert Bodle Right it's modulating
somethings telling me scott cortez definitely used 45 on the midiverb ii
this,this!
Hey! We use the same amplifier. I love the Princeton 112 plus!
So cool! I love my Fender Princetone 112plus. So small and loudm Great clean sound and amazing Drive channel. Also the Spring Reverb sounds great.
I love your slippers.
Please don’t ever delete
I love love love your channel! I have the same guitar and love Shoegaze. But I have to ask-where did you get those shoes?? I'm trying to find some like that and I can't!
whoa, cool slippers
thanks :)
For some reason I find the washed out sound of the Digiverb really good and now i really want to buy it haha
noise order one fam
it's super-woozy
Bloom preset on Midiverb II sounds really nice indeed.
Does anyone know if the same preset is included in the MIdiverb IV? Can't find a preset list in it's manual..
Love your demos/videos over the years, so please keep doing them. I'm on Apple Music, so what should Iisten to first by your band?
If you like check out Downhill Willows "Machines" and "Trauma" or the whole Downhill Willows EP. At the moment I'm making music under the name Unkenny Valleys. "She Saves Me Again" and " Happy Happy" could be a good starter. :)
Have you used the Marshall Reflector RF-1? Would you recommend it?
can't do full wet reverse
You mentioned the fx500, ive been researching it since hearing about it here. I think im gonna sell my delay and chorus (boss dd3 and ehx neo clone) and get one dor my fx send
I had one once and it sounds exactly like the early slowdive records but I didn't like the overall handling of these racks so much. Single effect pedals or modern multi effects are better to dial in concrete details. But I think everyone has to try out stuff that feels exciting to her/him.
Digiverb & Hardwire sounds nice, Cathedral's weird with way too much reverse/reverb/delay, which ruin melody.
Hi, anuone knows if an Alesis Midiverb 4 will work?
What do you think of the pedal BlackStar HT-Reverb ? How it is for a shoegaze?
You should just get an alesis guitar fx pedal it's like dirt cheap if you can find it and it's actually really nice when you layer the fx and it's reverse reverb is great
OK, here's an idea to share.
I think that very few reverse reverbs actually get a usable sound. I think that in a mix, a time gap between the original input signal and the effect can be fine, but I like how some people get the effect right on the beat. Sometimes, that's done in a DAW during mixing, but I believe there is a way to get it for a live sound as well.
Some multi-effects units, if not some pedals, in the past have offered a reverse delay. From what I could tell, this was basically done digitally, by taking the first tap of the delay and reversing it before feeding it into the subsequent taps (which were not reversed, for obvious reasons). I read about one person somewhere, who took a single reverse delay tap set to slapback at super-short duration and fed that into a reverb of choice. I'm guessing that this was fully wet, and maybe parallel to a second copy of the input, cuz that's what I'd do. I'm not sure if I ever heard the results of this chain for myself, but I have heard a reverse delay alone once or twice, and it sounds like you might expect. I cannot recall who did it, but I'm pretty sure it was in a guitar magazine a decade or two ago.
Anyway, I think this would probably make for a much more controllable and customizable reverse reverb effect. Some possible alterations might be to first feed the reverse delay with a very short-duration reverb tail, and then go into another reverb as before; as well as adding chorus or other modulation effects in different spots.
Has anyone tried this, or have info on where to get ahold of a unit that can do reverse delay? I'm going to scour the online music shops tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I'm thinking that maybe Line 6, Zoom, or TC has it already in something.
Hey Rob, nice and interesting thoughts. Thank you for sharing those.
It could work but I guess it's still not the real charm of a reversed reverb since those are gated at the effect's end - not fading out like a usual reverb sound. I'm experementing with the EHX Superego at the moment and it is (when the dry signal is turned off in 'auto mode') like an instantly attacking reverse reverb. super easy to handle. only problem is: you can not use the whammy bar as the input signal is kind of looped instead of constantly played by hand. you would need a digitech Whammy or Pitchfork with an expression pedal to fake it.
SHOEGAZER
Gotcha! I guess it's a matter of which order the delay and reverb are in, too. Each sequence will yield different results.
When you said, "gated at the end," what did you mean? I wasn't too clear on that. I have experience gated reverb sounds, but most of the reverbs I've encountered don't do that. I probably wouldn't use a gated reverb, but compressing it a little bit might be cool.
I have some other ideas for reverse sounds that would require a DAW, PRE, or other programming functionality to work well. I'm going to try all available ideas to see what works best for me. I'll look into that Superego pedal some more to see how they've done it.
I'm probably not going to do any of the whammy bar gliding thing, myself, cuz it wouldn't work so well with how I write in most cases (putting it succintly). I think it's cool when it works, though. I'm mostly after being able to use effects to create pad-like sounds. That's how I think about a lot of this stuff. Plus, I probably suck too much at playing to do any more than that--LOL!--so I figure I could make myself useful that way and let someone else do the good stuff.
I use a Digitech Whammy to simulate a whammy bar and then I run that through a Hoof Fuzz and my Superego, which sounds sounds pretty good. I usually end up tweaking settings on the Superego often though, because the gliss attack is hard to reign in exactly how I want and would prefer to have a good reverse verb in front of it and use the Superego to guide it or give it more definition.
Sounds like this: soundcloud.com/plotholes/noir-montage
The Cathedral is not an analogue reverb. A real analogue reverb doesn't really exist in pedal form. You'll need a proper spring-reverb tank or a real plate-reverb devices that are really expensive. That doesn't mean the Cathedral doesn't sound good, it sounds great!
Haha. Thank you, Thanos. Made this video some years ago and know it better, meanwhile. Didn't know that much back then.
If I stack the Gated Reverb of the Digiverb with the reverse of the Rv-7 do you think I'd be able to emulate the sound of the Bloom setting on the Alesis?
No. Because the Bloom setting has a very long decay time and none of the other two reverbs (gates and reverse) have a long decay time. But if you would add some delay in the end of the chain it could get very close.
your intro is so good
Other than these pedals, what would you recommend for a dreampop setup? I like shoegaze but not a huge fan of the distortion part, I prefer a more dreamy, clean sound.
Then go with a Roland JC for amplifier!
great chords. you wrote? i have the cathedral and the digitech
Nice shirt nice vid
great vid like most of your videos. not to be an ass, but I am 90% sure the cathedral isn't analog. thanks for making this. lots of fun to watch/listen to.
Thank you. I know. I thought so while recording the video but I noticed that was wrong. Added a note to the video where I explain this. But thank you anyway.
Also you missed one of the coolest applications of the cathedral. Since the left and right inputs have separate processors, you can feed the left output into the right input and essentially double reverb your signal ☺
woah that sounds awesome, i'm gonna cop this pedal I think
Hey do you think the new Polara pedal has the same reverse setting that the old hardwire reverb pedal has?? cause I want to get one but the hardwire is so much more expensive and the Polara is actually cheaper, but I just really love the sound the hardwire is making. Your videos are great thank you, please get back to me
Hey Alejandro, have a look at this: ua-cam.com/video/9X0TRHPnSxM/v-deo.htmlm44s - I would definitly say they are the same!
You should look into the Polara reverb.
I did. It's perfect.
Can you explain how the Alesis would be connected to an amplifier? Would it be able to go into a pedal board or rest on top of an amp while pedals are also incorporated? I use a Roland jc40.
You can use it on top of your amp or as a rack for your studio. I guess it's ment to be used like that. But it wourk exactly like a pedal. In theory you could put it on you pedalboard as well.
@trashja 69 how do you integrate it in your rig? Do you also use a foot switch?
Amazing! You should check some delays.
Wtf is that clean signal it sounds so good.
It's just the Fender Princetone 112 Plus and the Squire Jaguar. I really love the combination too.
@@berlinshoegazer thanks for the reply. Are you moving the tremolo arm during this?
@@antidepressantscale4675 You're welcome. Yeah, I used it all the time when I made videos back then. :)
@@antidepressantscale4675 Fender Princeton amps are considered some of the best clean, "blackface" style amps you can buy. I imagine it would make any guitar sound great.
@@berlinshoegazer what do you think about squire guitars. Do you think they are good and they jus have been stigmatized. I’ve seen some beautiful ones
I own the Cathedral, but the slower reverse is kinda not working for me. The reverse on my Alesis Microverb 3 comes in faster and therefore is more controlable for me while playing. How do you compare the reverse from the Polara with those two? Is it coming slower like on the Cathedral or more faster like on the Microverb?
You can set it up like you want it. I like it a bit slower so I decided myself for the Polara and RV7. But it can also be very short like the Midiverb II and III.
Yeah, I might as well go with the Polara. The Oceans 11 is a solid one also, but I assume that the reverse mode is the same as on the Cathedral. Thanks!
What about the Polara? That seems to have replaced Digitech's Digiverb & Hardwire, pedals. I was wondering how they compare...
Polara is also great, slim, light and the reverse mode sounds just like the RV7. But I would miss the Gate mode using it.
Hey man, I've got an RV500 but it's too big for me so I'm looking for a smaller reverb that can do reverse stuff. I've got a good budget, but I'm looking at the oceans 11 from EHX. What do you think about it? Do you have any other recommendations? Considering the Cathedral as well but it is a bit big and it hasn't got shimverb.
I would always recommend the RV7 and the Polara for the Reverse sound. It's the best in my ears. Cathedral does the job a well but I think it's to huge for a pedalboard. Unfortunitily I never got the chance to check the Oceans 11 by EHX.
ua-cam.com/video/FYSRTMDXYFg/v-deo.html The reverse mode of the Oceans 11 sounds a bit metallic and thin. I personally wouldn't like that. But the pedals has a lot of other cool sounds instead.
Check out the Holy Grail max if you’re into Ehx stuff. Its reverse sound is really good, it’s possible to blend the clean signal with it and have full reverse w/ maxed Mix knob. It’s better than the ehx Oceans 11 reverse in my opinion, for some reason the holy grail max sounds more natural
3:01 😫
Kevin used the Bloom presets (45/49) lots on pre Loveless recordings.
It sounds a bit off from the recording, and I think they might have recorded it at one pitch/speed then played the tape back at a different speed. I don't know for certain.
@@TheTurtleneck64 what do you mean?
@@purrsnickety8269 The sound of the reverb on certain tracks sounds longer than the actual presets are. So, my guess is, that they recorded the guitar at a faster tempo and in a higher key, then slowed down the recording so that the actual reverse reverb effect was longer. I have no proof for this and it was just a thought.
@@TheTurtleneck64 I gotcha. The presets sound different in person and depending on the way you play guitar/how loud the amp is also. And the Yamaha spx90 used on Loveless is different also
I recently bought the Digiverb on Amazon! I'm impatiently waiting for it to come in. You should do this type of video with fuzz/dirt pedals! What do you think about the Proco Rat 2?
45 sounded fucking awesome!
And 49. Wow.
prrfect
@SHOEGAZER does the Digiverb have a wide stereo image when run in stereo? Any chance of a video with all pedals running in stereo with 2 amps?
The Digiverb is mono....
@@berlinshoegazer Wrong - the Digiverb does have stereo outputs, mono input
Yes the manual states that the second output is for stereo operation, but when both outputs are used are the reverse and gate modes actually in stereo or summed to mono?
love your videos man. have you used Marshall Reflector reverb pedal? Looking for a pedal with good reverse, love the hardwire, but can't find it in the UK. :(
Hey man, no. I didn't use the Marchall Reflector. Do you think it's useful? If you can not find the Hardwire then try the Digitech Polara for Reverse. It's he same one!
SHOEGAZER thanks for the reply dude. I didn't try the Marshall either - I was going to buy one but didn't want to buy one that I didn't really know was any good. Thanks to this video I did actually opt for the Polara, so I ordered one! Very helpful vids.
For anyone else looking at this, I bought a Marshall Reflector and didn't find it that useful for shoegaze. The reverse mode is very short and it plays the dry signal first, like a reverse delay - there is no way to play only the reversed sound.
I like my cathedral pedal. sometimes love it, sometimes not. but the reverse on it isn't great, that's for sure
Ever tried the Yamaha REX-50? Kevin told me he used that on Slow
Thank you for sharing. I never got the chance to check it so far.
Yes I bought one a while ago. They are rather noisy (hiss). The digital distortion preset is quite cool. They are very cheap though. I think the devices in the video sound better than the Rex.
With the mix at 100% on your midiverb is there a delay when you play
yes it is. but it's still good to play with it. You will get used to it and then it's allright.
Thanks for the vid! As for me Midiverb II is much cleaner and more pleasing to the ears.
Thanks for watching!
What fuzz are you using in that intro song? It sounds monstrous!
Devi Ever Rocket Fuzz.
Very useful thanks 🙏 Do you know any effects used on MBV bass tracks ?
Modified vox tonebender
MXR M80 Bass DI should sound exactly like the MBV bass on "Isn't Anything".
Can you run the midiverb in front of the amp? I have no effects loop in my amp.
Sure
Have you tried the Yamaha Magicstomp? It's a large unit but is in pedal format and it has both the SPX reverse modes and the 'symphonic' effect that Slowdive used.
never heard of it. will check it out. thank you.
@@berlinshoegazer did you ever?
@ahumanonplanetearth
Do you have to download the reverse patch..or is it in the unit stock? If stock...what is it labeled as in the unit? Thanks!
static fuzz It’s pre-loaded on the unit but is easier to edit if you’ve got a computer that uses Windows XP. I’ve not used the Magicstomp for awhile but I think the effects that MBV used are Early Reflections, Gate Reverb and Reverse Gate.
@@ahumanonplanetearth Thanks for the info! Mine is older (V1) and I need to update it online.. It doesn't have some of the newer patches.
Edit/update: I have since updated my Yamaha Magic Stomp with some of the new patches that V1 doesn't have. And I have to say... it is pretty magical (for lack of a better word). The "Early Reflections" would definitely be my favorite right now.. I feel it's a pretty underrated unit that should be on more boards. Especially....for us shoegazers.
how to i make it so you can hear the chord straight away as well as the reverse like at 2:16? Can't figure it out on my pedal's settings and it always sounds like 2:42
Joe Taylor just try the setting he has! He made it easy to see
that should be caused by your "dry/wet" mix that's probably set to 100%, which means that only the effect is played. You should put it at 50%, so it is a mix of clean and effect. (This knob is called "level" in the pedal in the video, but it has multiple names, "blend" is also much used)
I love u
@8:22 Beware. There is too much pre-delay on the Cathedral's "Reverse" mode for it to be used for Kevin Shields-style chord gliding! It is simply unsuitable for MBV-type guitar playing.
Didn't know better back then. Thank you for pointing that out.
If you turn the pre-delay knob all the way down it should work.
@@johnmarks466won't work. There's *inherent* pre-delay to the reverse setting.

Do you think the Digiverb can get close to the gated reverb on 'Thorn'?? Thanks! :)
Hey Charlie, I haven't checked the Thorn. Can you send me a link to a demo?
@@berlinshoegazer my apologies, i was referring to the guitar sound on My Bloody Valentine's song Thorn haha
Ah 'Thorn' of course, sorry. Yes, I think it can get ver close to it. In fact I like the gated reverb of the Digiverb more than the one on my RV7. The DigiVerb is perfect fornthe Gated reverb sound imo.
@@berlinshoegazer That's strange, at 6:20 in your video you said you liked the gated verb of the RV7 more as it's cleaner and more defined.
@@dagmerrie That was 5 years ago from that comment. His mind changed yknow
So you do you need a foot switch to turn the Alesis rack on and off?
I am also curious about this as well.
Yes. you would use something like an EHX switch blade to switch from the A and/or B signal.
I recently got myself a alesis guitar fx for £15.00 and the reverse reverb until is amazing :)
matt catling nice purchase, man! I've got one as well
