Cool video - thanks for making this! May I ask how you set up this recording please? Is it: guitar > DI box > IP - Midiverb - OP > Hm2 > DAW Interface I was wondering if I need to get a DI box to feed the midiverb with my guitar signal, or is it not needed. Thank you very much for your advice.
Thank you (; means a lot! That’s a great question by the way. I’m plugging my guitar straight into the midiverb III since it’s input jack can handle instrument level signal, so no, you don’t need a DI box. What you do need is a reamp box, so you can take the Line level signal coming from the Midiverb III into your guitar pedal safely, turning it to an instrument level signal again. Here’s my signal chain: Guitar -> Midiverb III -> Reamp Box -> Boss hm 2 -> Amp (you can just send it to your audio interface as well). That being said, I don’t know if MBV used reamp boxes at all to do this 😅 (if they’ve ever done this to record). Don’t really know how much this kind of gear was available to the late 80’s and early 90’s home/indie recording environment, but anyways.. Hope I helped 😁
@@manualofalternativemusic Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it man! I'll need to reamp the signal from the midiverb output - got you. Thanks again for your help, I just subscribed.
Your videos deserve way more attention. I still would have loved to see you explore the 'Bloom' setting (or whatever is similar in the Midiverb 3), as it is said to be Kevin Shields most used setting.
Thanks 😊 it means a lot! Unfortunately the midiverb 3 doesn’t have anything like the bloom setting 😔 I tried the Plate setting on it though, with maxed decay at 13:33 if you’d like to check it out (: it sounds wonderful and dreamy. Kinda glitchy, you can hear the digital artifacts since the processing power isn’t as advanced as today, but honestly I just felt these characteristics made the experience of using the Plate setting a lot more unique 😅 it has a lot of character.
Great video mate. Got an hm2 on the way (thanks to my gf) and cant wait to pair it with the midiverb 3. I also have a quadraverb which had the actual reverse reverb. I really recommend it. I got mine in a pretty nice deal at a local shop for 80£.
Thanks!! When I paired these up, couldn’t stop playing. Instantly made me want to record music. Hope you feel the same with yours (: and I bet the quadraverb will also sound amazing on this setup
To answer your question - yeah - he uses them live... When I saw them they had racks, upon racks of outboard gear. Honestly there was so much shit on stage it was hard to make out what was what, but there were deff a few Midiverbs, as well as a couple Yamaha SPX90/900's amongst a ton of other stuff... Didn't see any HM2's but there were plenty of pedals. You can see from pics that he still has quite a few of them, but no reverb pedals, which makes sense. From experience - trying to find a pedal that do those sounds are SO hard to find! There are really only 4 or 5 options... I don't understand why! Midiverb's and the SPX have such a specific sound to them... They walk this razor thin line between sounding really shitty, and almost hyper realistic. Pedals on the other hand either sound too metallic, or too dreamy.. The closest you can get (in my opinion) is the "Early Reflections" mode on the Boss RV-500, or the "Gate" mode on a Red Panda Context... Both of which you can find used, cheaper than an RV7!
How lucky you were to have been in one of their shows (: I really hope to see them live someday. Sorry I took long to answer back! The fact that they use these live a lot definitely show how reliable they are, and indeed, they're very unique sounding effects. Yes, you're right, unfortunately there aren't many pedals out there with Gated and Reverse modes on them. I expect more pedals to come out someday, since Digitech discontinued the Polara, RV-7 and Digiverb it's been a struggle, I guess the zoom pedals are still the cheaper option to go probably so thanks for the recommendation on these pedals :D more options are always welcome. I've heard Shields uses/has used a Red Panda, I really want to check one out someday
Very informative, thank you however my issue is where do we go now ? That is now that we know how to get the MBV (or anybodys " sound") If the objective is an MBV Cover band ok but if the idea is to discover a new sound than finding previously ignored or passed over gear is the objective yes?
Well, yes, although it could also be possible to take the components of this particular sound and try swapping them out or modifying them, using this as a starting point to craft a new sound? I have a Midiverb II and don't use it to sound like MBV, although it's fun in practice sometimes! :-)
Thank you!! Great point! Honestly trying to replicate someone’s sound is more of a learning experience for me than, you know, trying to use it on songs or whatever. Maybe trying to use some of these techniques to create something new and different? 🤔 I suppose the sky is the limit to when it comes to create something new 😅
@bencolemanart I’d love to know more about modding circuits! Also seems like a gateway into an infinite of new possibilities of sound! Might be awesome to carve out new sounds! I can only wish unfortunately 😅
Hi, thanks!! You didn’t, I think I didn’t mention it during the video 😬 I’m in standard tuning for most of the time, when I play Sometimes by mbv I’m in DADGAD tuning (; hope it helps. If you need anything else feel free to ask!
Hi Derek! Sorry I didn’t see your comment. The Midiverb goes in front of the HM-2, I’m using a reamp box to get line level signal onto instrument signal to use my HM-2. By the way, I should include that in the description, will do it right now!
Hello! I recently got midiverb 4 and i can't figure out how to connect it to my amp hiwatt maxwatt b20 10. I connected the guitar to the left input on the processor and the left output to the input on the amplifier, but the processor seems to be reading the signal poorly. There is a little noise and when I hit the strings hard, a sound appears for a moment and that’s it. please help me... what am I doing wrong?
Hey there! Sorry I took long to answer you back! I think you should try using reamp boxes to make the connection between your midiverb and your amp, they have different signal levels.. One is a line level signal (midiverb out) and the other is an instrument level signal (amp). Have you tried that? Hope you got everything sorted out (;
@manualofalternativemusic well when referring to the glide sound, what else is there? I've researched Kevin's sound for over 15 years, so I'd love to know, what your expert opinion is and the massive amounts of gear he compiled to create the glide sound. Kevin's chain for his glide guitar psrts was: A/B switcher for going between amp sound and rack unit sound, midiverb II and later the yamaha spx90 being the two of choice in the early 90s. The alesis came first in 87. And later the spx in 89-1990. He would use the Ab Box to go between those and have an EQ pedal on each end. You will also find a rat at his feet for the non "reverb" A/B patch. Again, a lot of you guys seem to really overestimate what Kevin used.
this is a trip, considering what most people buy hm-2s for lately.
Thanks! They're probably most famous out there for the Swedish chainsaw, but shoegazers certainly get how important they are for the mbv sound (;
Manual of Alternative Music Nice done!
Really fun to watch & learn. Big thank u for share your experience and thoughts.
Keep rocking!
Hi Angelo (: thanks a lot! These comments are what keep me excited to work on new videos. Cheers my friend!
acabei de comprar um midiverb III, video bom demais mano, agora so achar a setting perfeita no meu hm2 e ser feliz kkk
Hehe bom demais!!
Yep while some of us polish our descending Eric bona's pentatonics this guy has FUN
😅 I’m also a lot into pentatonics bro, remember to have fun when playing (:

Apparently they also used the Yamaha SPX-90 reverse or gated reverb
Yes!! I’d love to get my hands on one (: it’d be fun to pair it up with the hm-2
@@manualofalternativemusic Or use SPX90s IRs...
Yeah that should be easier (: have you found any IRs of Yamaha SPX-90 you recommend?
@@manualofalternativemusic Look for surefyre spx90 IRs. I dont have them
I am a cheap all free guy
it's the "early reflections" setting, with the decay reversed so it ramps up in volume. it's heard very clearly on the drum intro in "soon"

That at 14:13 ... all I have to say is mbv needs a slowed and reverbed take on Sometimes. I'd listen to that for days
Thanks 😊 that plate setting is really special isn’t it?
E o midiverb 4? Será que é bom?
É Excelente (;
This isnt really how kevin did it. Amp distortion LOUD and eq pedals
there’s a lot more to it than that bro

Ouch bro, chill. It’s just a video. Sorry if I offended your expertise with a video just sharing my humble experience
This sounds terrible and nothing at all like the original MBV sound 😬
Well.. I tried.. 😔
Try backing off the distortion .
It's basically in death metal settings in this video 😁
What amp are you using? Sounds beefy as hell
Thanks! In this video I’m using a fender champion 100 on the clean channel mic’ed with a shure sm58 (: I love it for landing pedals
