The Blues Driver is easily some of the most bang you can get for your buck. I have a few pedals I prefer, but they’re like double the price. The only other great (distortion/fuzz/overdrive) pedal you can get for that cheap is a Big Muff.

dude! I also got into My Bloody Valentine after watching Lost In Translation. The scene when she's in the taxi (if I remember correctly) in Tokyo is so sublime. I remember thinking WHO is this band? Shoegaze can really create that magical place that most other genres can't. Side Note: Whenever I heard someone mention My Bloody Valentine before watching this film I always thought they were talking about Bullet For My Valentine. I remember thinking "I didn't know Bullet For My Valentine was around in the 80's."

Funny, I think I've had the same misunderstanding you mentioned at the end, there. Imagine how I feel after just finding out that movie's soundtrack could have introduced me to the genre much sooner in life, meanwhile it's been on my watch list for over a decade. Oh well, better late than never, I suppose. Let that be a prime example of why procrastination is cancer.

I really loved the Digitech Hot Rod Distortion here. I was working on another screen while listening to the video and the Hot Rod Distortion was the pedal that made me stop what I was doing and pay attention to the video. Really loved how transparent it sounds yet it adds a really...warm/nostalgic sound. You make me want to spend all my money on pedals, damn it.

The Hot Rod is very cheap pre-owned so buying one won't break the bank! You can pick one up for about the same price you would pay new for the Behringer Super Fuzz (which sounds horrible in this video).

As someone who was into shoegaze first time around especially while I was at uni, I thought you did a really interesting introduction to the genre explaining it in a way that was even new and original to me so cheers for that. I also really like the way you keep your playing inside of a template to help us compare and understand the pedals - it's a really helpful format and sounds really good too.

Recently got Digitech Hot Head and it is amazing for my needs with the mixer out setting, as well as Big Muff Pi (w. My personal preference is single note riffs or minimalist power chords
    through fuzz.
I gave up trying to play full chords with fuzz back in 1978.
The equipment I had then was probably too limited by my own youthful inexperience
    to sound any good.
I'm now living evidence that we can get too set in our ways.
But that does not mean we can never change old habits
if motivated to make the effort..
I now own a stupidly large collection of fuzz pedals.
There's no reason why big chords shouldn't sound good through some of them...???

As I delved hard into doom, sludge, super low tuned guitars. The fuzz is still my godsend tone. I have 3 types atm. And I still want more. Wasn't hard to get into shoegaze and I only heard of the term recently cause I listen to deftones. With this riff and set of pedals, I loved the hot rod.

I have more of a dreampop tone, a Jazzmaster into (all boss, all japanese models) Boss SD-1, then into an ME-X pedal tray, which has a BF-2 Flange, a DC-3 Digital Dimension, and a PH-2. The ME-X has some very interesting sounds, the pitch shift tracks pretty well, especially when used in conjunction with my e-bow. It also has a chromatic detune, that when you mix with the dual delays (one short, one long) and a nice spacious reverb, it sounds like the guitar is dripping into space. I noticed that the guitarist for Asobi Seksu had one in a live video I saw, which was cool, I wish i had gotten to see them live as I could have chatted with him about what use he got out of it, and how many songs he used it on, etc. Not many people use them anymore, and mine is well over 20 years old at this point.

I tried few distortion from Boss and they are probably for me the worst distortion i ever heard. I also have a Marshall Jackhammer, very cool pedal for leads but for chords it can go too fat. But you can adjust the filter and the coutour of the sound and it's very nice. But yeah the best distortion that i ever heard and play it's the Proco RAT, through my avalanche run and a flanger it's sound so great!

There's this trick where you can get the switch just right in between 1& 2 where you can actually get both one and two fuzz Distortion types together. I'm using a Muffuletta, and The Big Muff Russian or Ram's Head settings both sound the best with chords IMO. The Russian especially backs down a lot when you lower the sustain knob, almost going into more of an overdrive sound.

I use it as well! The Russian setting is my light overdrive/breakup tone :) but you gotta love the maxed out Ram's head for Shoegazing.

Hey Kenneth, big fan of the channel, my first pedal was a Zoom MS 70 CDR which I bought on your recommendation! If you're looking for any new pedals to demo in your videos, I highly recommend the EHX Attack Decay, especially for the fuzz! It isn't even marketed as a fuzz pedal, but I found the fuzz setting so be so good it actually replaced my Big Muff. It's the warmest, most saturated fuzz I've ever heard, you can dial in weird low-res glitchy stuff into it too, and the tone shaping has a boost at the cutoff so you can even get synthy sounding sweeps by moving the knob around. It's also got a ton of other features that fit really nicely into a shoegaze aesthetic. I'd love to see what you can do with it! Cheers xx

i use a Boss HM-2{1992 era}, Beehive Octafuzz, Keeley Fuzz Bender and a hand made MKI Tone Bender from a guy in Augusta, GA. I will use any combination therein and depending on what i'm looking for run one of them post fx. I used to have a blues driver which i want to reacquire.

I just use two Distortion/Fuzz pedals, a Zvex Fuzz factory and a Proco Rat clone that has a Silicon/Germanium circuit option. The Fuzz factory is just as wild as you want it to be and the Rat on germanium can give great distortion sounds plus a great fuzz tone on either circuit option. Apart from that I use a Blues driver basically as a boost pedal, works well for me!

“Thank you, Kenneth!” After you referenced the DF-7 in multiple videos, I finally got one ($75 ebay). Wow - totally worth it and as good as you said! In fact, the Boss SD-1 is based on the Tubescreamer, so Setting 1 on the DF-7 actually covers that pedal too, which you can compare to see for yourself. Anyway, GREAT recommendation - now I can sell my Ratt and SD-1 👍

I'll be keeping my Blues Driver since the DF-7 doesn't have that, and now I can put my real Big Muff AFTER my reverse reverb [Holy Grail Max]. From your recommend, I also finally got a MS-70CDR [coming on Monday, also ebay / "like new" $95 including shipping]. I'll be rewatching your video to help learn using it, plus updating firmware, etc. I think now my pedals will be complete... for a while - ha ha! Hi, I like the Catalinbread Karma Suture, nice even order harmonics and good note definition. Also the Mad Professor Little Tweedy Drive is really crispy and a bit different to the more usual overdrives like the Boss BD2. I second the earlier commenter shouting out the Fender Blender too, though not so much for complex chords, more a wall of noise. Keep up the good work Mr Shoegazer.

Fuzz never served me well in terms of chords. What I do is use a Digitech Screamin' Blues and record with mid level gain (still hearing the complex notes) and I'll re-record over it with the Super Fuzz but only the powerchord version of the notes I played through the Blues pedal. That way you hear the fuzz and you hear the chord.

Great to see a fuzz comparison but why use a Fender Princeton amp? Fender amps are notorious for not producing the best sound quality when using a fuzz pedal. Wouldn't it have been better to use an amp like a Vox or a Marshall that tend to give better tone quality with fuzz?
