Scotty Kilmer need information on a F-150 4 by 4 how to replace the front hub left side
I’m trying to find the metrics for how hard to fasten my front wheel bearings bolts. It for a Mazda mx5 nb(fl) 2005 1,8 sport?
What is the size of the socket wrench used in removing the drive shaft nut?
Scotty Kilmer what was the tool you used for the bearing again please do you have a part number of any sort??!!
Thanks for letting us know the names of the tools to complete the job cause that's important. If i drive 20mph then press on the brakes it feels like the front driver side wheel shakes and wobbles. If i drive 30mph it wobbles even worse. The faster i drive then press on the brakes the more the wheel wobbles and shakes. But i wonder why, what could that be ???
That's how to make a video, fast pace and no fuckin around.
+Bus Driver Uppercut me to
Pop Sheen i Totally agree.
I agree! Fantastic video! Perfect mechanic tips too!
Scooty makes it look so easy and simple. I bet that if i did it, it would take me half a day, at least!😅
I'm thinking he took it apart and put it back together off camera so that it would be quicker when he filmed. I have never worked on a car and had things come apart so easily.
try a week
Would have been even easier if he would have changed the entire assembly like he usually does. I spend most of the the time either looking for the right tool or fighting with one stubborn bolt that decides it doesn't want to come off. I changed my CV axle last week and it went much smoother than i thought. But i found out i now have to change the wheel barrings also.
If I did it, I would lose three bolts and have an extra one left over when I was done reassembling the wheel.
@@lezlethal That's why I did my axles and wheel bearing/hub assemblies at the same time. Might as well while its separated.
I use to do a TV gig on CBS and won it then for interactive car talk host. This is MUCH better on youtube, I can say what I want and not be stopped by pencil necked executives who are afraid of offending advertisers
It’s videos like this that really shows off his experience.

@@malvolio01 Meh, dialect difference. In my region, we use "shows".
@@RikuIshmaru videos show video shows. It's just plain wrong man sorry lol. If the subject was "this" you'd be right.
I wonder if self-driving cars will drive themselves to the car wash and mechinics? Every three months you see your car dive away and come back with the tires rotated, the oil changed, and all clean.
Or if your car is three months over due for payments. To car just drive back to the car lot.
That would piss me off
I laughed way too hard at this 😂😂
Car drives away while you are shopping, come back. Dude where my car?
I think we'll hit a point where most ppl don't own cars. And companies like uber will have monthly subscription packages and you'll simply summon a car.
😂🤣 That'd be incredible. It'd have to alert your phone, link up with the shop for appointment times, and set up a time that works with you.
Alternatively it just fucks off without you 😂 Maybe the Cloud lets you borrow another self-driving car for a day to compensate.
most people complain I"m too fast.
Damn dude... you are a breath of fresh mechanic'n air. Short, sweet and to the point.
more than one way to skin a mule, yes. Actually one should use a ball joint removal tool, but they cost a ton and most do it yourselfers aren't going to shell out that kind of money.
Why the fuck did I go to community college to learn to be a mechanic when I could have just watched this guy!?
because when you got thru replacing that wheel bearing, YOU still had the noise!!!!!!!!!!!! do you suppose it may have been on the transmission side!!!! EMOGENE THAT!!!!!!!!
Ah, but so is paying a mechanic 100 bucks an hour to fix your car. me, I'll fix em myself.
Great video, Scotty. I do appreciate the fact that you spend a considerable amount of time prepping the vehicle so that you don't waste our time. A perfect blend of treating your viewers as if they have some idea, and just running them through the basic steps to give them the necessary insight to tackle basic maintenance. Have you considered showing the necessary tools before starting the video?
Tools over a thousand dollars. Then brings out a bold with some washers lol
I'd definitely check the wheel bearing on the right hand side. If it's the brakes making that noise, it will be completely obvious when you remove the wheel, so certainly check that out. The wheel bearing is inside a sealed hub, so you can't see them when they go bad. And as old as that thing is, odds are it has gone bad. Scotty Kilmer
@EAWitkowski wheel bearings roar as they wear, louder the faster you go. I would assume a different suspension problem, but it's going to be hard to figure out until it gets worse. But a really good front end man may be able to figure it out with his equipment, most give free estimates. If you're near houston, cotton brothers front end can always figure it out.

Thanks Scotty...... Your one hell of a guy to share such a wealth of information. There are not many professional mechanics that would be so generous with their knowledge.
@MightyJustas Yes, pressing the bearing in and out of the hub assembly is the only hard part, as I show in the video. Scotty
oh every 80 thousand miles is fine.
I'd be left with a car and a bunch of parts in my hand trying to figure out what goes where.
Auto mechanics is not taught in as many schools as it use to be. So each generation know less and less about even simple things about cars. Like checking fluids and tire pressures. Cars get smarter...people get dumber.
Damn dude! You got some good videos, no BS no extra talk, no wasted time!! Love it!
Thats record time. It takes me an hr lol
yeah ...because he has that hydraulic wrench bolt remover thingy, whereas 99.9 percent of "DIY"ers don't. :-)
What im confused about is why oh why only replace the bearing? Why not replace the entire wheel hub? Wheel hub is only 100 to 150 dollars? Your already taking the thing off why not just replace the entire thing instead of trying to find a machinist or struggling yourself to get it out. Am i missing something?
do as in this video, mechanics tend to charge quite a bit for such a job.
you didnt use a torque stick to tighten the wheels back up. NEVER tighten wheels up with an impact gun unless you are using a torque limiting extension also known as a torque stick. You can make the mistake of over tightening (warps rotors) or under tightening (wheel falling off).. Use a torque stick they are cheap and easy to use. No reason not to use them.
He does a lot of stuff off camera. He probably tightened it up with the impact and then went and torqued it afterwards.
+Taylor F. May be true. But thousands of people will see this video and follow his poor example of how to tighten a wheel back up.
dude Scotty has been a mechanic for 50 years.ive been a mechanic for 10 years and can UGA duga bolts on and put a torque wrench on and have it within a few pounds. it's all about your level of experience
You saved me $thousands of dollars by me watching all your videos
@FishBoneSkeleton Yes, I am the master of All Machines, and they obey me. Scotty
MIght be a good idea for people without a super-air gun to remove the axle nut with the wheel on and the car on the ground. That way they can use a cheater pipe and plenty of torque with the tire preventing everything else from turning... and thanks for the video! Oh, and doesn't the fork tool usually ruin the boot of the tie rod or ball joint?
Thanks for tip
@testbooster I'm not big on animations, so I don't know. But I'm sure you can google it.
But basically, the oil pump is a sump pump near the bottom of the engine. It sucks oil in from the pan, and sends it out pressurized. The oil is pumped through the various oil galley holes in the engine until it reaches the top of the head, then it falls by gravity back down into the oil pan. Pretty basic design of all normal engines. Scotty
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, NOT LIKE HAVING IT ALL SET UP TO FALL APART. NOW LETS GET TO THE REAL WORLD WHERE IT AIN'T THAT SIMPLE WITHOUT SNAPPING SHIT AND USING A CUTTING TORCH MAYBE..
@mandykal yes, watch my video "replacing a water pump" on the scottykilmer channel, yours is pretty much the same.
very good!

@LuchoLuchan yes, the tool is universal for most cars. Without power tools if's very hard to do this, and most guys normally use a machine press to press the bearings out and in. As for sizes, heck, even I don't remember any of that stuff, I just grab an assortment of sockets and see which one fits. no one really stores such information in books or online. Scotty

another tip is to put the new bearing in the freezer while you're getting the old one out. that will "shrink" it and help it press in easier.
s30kidd cold expands😐
David Koon are you serious?
go stand in the corner and think about what you just said...
David Koon Why do hot air balloons expand when you inflate them with HOT AIR?
shoot couldn't tell yeah probably the gas emissions coming off the heat. but I do know I had a block of dry ice and I later it on a metal counter top and left it for about an hour and the counter top when I returned was about 10 inches larger than the wood frame. and I removed it and about 3 hours later it fit like it never happened again.
@Orangehonda01 forget electric ones, they suck Big Time, I have one rotting in the back of the garage I got years ago. They won't break loose any big bolts, and they lie about their actual power. Take a trip to a local pawn shop, they've got tons of used compressors, and places like harbor freight sell great compressors at many levels or pricing. A strong enough one for your useage would cost anywhere from 50 bucks used to 150 new. Scotty
THIS GUY IS FLIPPING AMAZING ,,ABOUT AS HELPFUL AS YA CAN BE WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING THE JOB FOR YA ,,THE WORLD NEEDS MORE GUYS LIKE THIS ,, AWESOME
& $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ cash
@wafrederick Yea, but this one was worn out and i"m replacing it anyway. I use a regular small frame puller to get them off otherwise. but I don't like to use too many specialty tools in my videos, as most do it yourselfers don't have such tools.. and these videos aren't for professional mechanics, they already know this stuff. Scotty
Your the man scotty
NO, you're the second guy to make that mistake. All modern front wheel drive bearings come already packed with special grease and are ready for installation right out of the box. If you put more grease in, it would probably be the wrong kind and mess things up, on top of being too much grease and leaking all over the place. Scotty Kilmer
Don't you have to get a new alignment if you take tie rod out ?
+myles hartsfield No. Only if you replace the tie rod.
If you take the knuckle off the strut (as Scotty did), your camber will be way off if you don't get an alignment.
dmj7676 how will it be off if you dont mind me asking ..he didnt move/ajust anything all he did was bolt off bolt on
Not if you take record of where it was before taking it apart. Tie ends use white out to mark threads them you are very close to your original alignment
Mine is part of a kit that cost over a thousand dollars, from SIR tools, I doubt if you want to spend that. Go to any discount auto store and they can sell you a much cheaper version that's fine for do it yourselfers, or try any professional tool company and see what they sell for your vehicle. Scotty Kilmer
@KJig5 I disagree. I've been doing them in the driveway for 42 years. Some people are just babies and need air conditioned garages and a roof over their head to work. Hey, we used to be cave men living in caves, and I for one wouldn't mind a cave to live in if it had running water and a toilet. Scotty
@MATTMATT811 If you are insane enough to try such a major job, go ahead. But it's a bear of a job, and you would still need a mechanic to align the front end when you were done with the job. I even hate doing those messy greasy take everything apart steering racks on VWs. Scotty Kilmer
Doubt if it's the wheel bearing, cause they will make their noise whether you turn or hit bumps, they just make noise all the time the car moves when they're worn. More of a suspension problem, like worn shock mount or a frame bushing or torsion bar bushing. Scotty Kilmer
Well, I didn't pay anything for that tool, I get lots for free being a car talk expert. And some vehicles are impossible to do without such a tool. I do have a press of course, but most guys don't have one on the do it yourself scene, so I didn't film it. Scotty Kilmer
yes, it can do that from being bent, and realize ONLY factory oem sensors will work if you used one of those chinese aftermarket made sensors they are often garbage. As for the steering wheel, have a front end guy recenter the alignment
@joemac356 sure, but they can loan em free from auto parts stores like auto zone if they buy the bearings there. They do not loan tools that do it on the vehicle. so there, wisenheimer. don't try to outsmart me, I've been doing this a LONG time.
@joemac356 I make these videos mainly for do it yourself guys and gals. They are not going to have such an expensive tool. So I don't use em in my videos, I have them as a professional mechanic, but regular people don't, so I don't put em in my vids.
@jumac81880 You can pound till hell freezes over and they won't come out. You need a special tool to press them out, I have one, but then again I'm a pro and the kit costs me 1500 bucks. One reason amongst many I advise against buying Beemers. Scotty
@wangbungal Don't bother doing that. It's a royal pain in the ass to do correctly. If you use an adaptor, it will fall off, I see that a lot. You'd have to change the bearing hub assembly for a five lug one and that's a royal pain. Scotty Kilmer
@starbucksmunky Mine is only two horsepower, and has a twenty gallon tank, bought it used for 50 bucks, but a new one is only a couple hundred if you price around, or buy a used one like me, they're pretty damn simple to maintain and fix up. Scotty Kilmer
@Walterronny Sure , you can make your own tools, but be sure to WELD them up tight. As a car talk host, I get LOTS of tools free, so I didn't pay the grand for mine that it costs, got it for nothing. And Nothing beats Nothing. Scotty Kilmer
one, start with a better front end mechanic, cause he should have road tested it and seen it wasn't fixed
@JamesofJesus you could try, but 5 gallons is pretty small. No one rents SIR tools, they cost too much. But some auto zones and other stores lend you their tools for the job If you buy parts from them. Scotty
@brother776 it costs a thousand bucks, doubt you'd want to buy it. check your local tool stores for lower priced ones unless you're a mechanic. It's a SIR tool, no idea what number anymore, the box is long gone. Scotty
@nightmathzombieethan Yes, if you whack it with a fork like I did. If I'm using the old one over, I use a special tie rod puller device I have. But most people aren't going to buy one of those unless they're a mechanic. Scotty
@srduff73 They are just rusted on,spray some wd 40 on em overnight then go back to whacking. If you can't whack em off then, pull the hub and any machine shop can press em off. But it shouldn't have to go that far. Scotty
@Orangehonda01 I would go for the harbor freight 30 gallon one, it should last you for years and years. Why mess with something a lot smaller when that is a good compressor that can last a LONG time. Scotty
@CubicCookie You can buy fuel and compression testers at place like harbor freight tools online or at their stores. And you can watch my videos that show how to do such tests at scottykilmer's channel on youtube. Scotty Kilmer
Mercedes don't count, everything on them is separate so they can rip you off selling more and more parts. You don't even get a gasket if you buy a water pump from them, you have to buy the gasket separately. Scotty Kilmer
No, you only need to change out one side is only one bearing is worn. He's just trying to double his profit, OR he doesn't know which side is bad, so he wants to replace them both to get rid of the noise for sure. Scotty Kilmer
Aha, you noticed. Well they weren't off when i I started the job, but I attempt to leave out the swearing and such when I make a video. It goes smoother that way and the information is still the same. Scotty
na, it only bolts on one way. BUT, if you got a bearing assembly that wasn't made right, often the ABS won't pick up the mark and will stop working. See that a lot with cheaper chinese made bearing kits
@ebebimik People who don't want to ruin their hands. My grandfather, also a mechanic, never used gloves, and his hands looked like dried up eskimo hands. My hands are nice and smooth. Scotty
@microphonemeister You either take it all apart, and install a new boot, or just put a whole new drive shaft in. They make the shafts now in china and new assemblies are often less than 60 bucks. Scotty
@vrood178243 Whack it with a brass hammer that won't bend things. As for the screws, they are just there for easy installation when building the car. You don't really need the stupid things. Scotty
@lisekrull Many things can cause clunking noises, jack it up and pull on the tires looking for any play, and replace any parts that do have pay in them. there should be none. scotty
@coldcash12345 every front wheel drive bearing I ever changed already came with permanent grease in it. Only the old rear wheel drive cars had front bearings you would grease. Scotty
@benny5825 I have a video showing how to check em, called "checking the suspension on your car" and one on replacing tie rods "how to replace a tie rod in your car" Scotty . Watch em both
@DevinL16 $ WD vehicles that old are cows to change bearings in, as you really need special tools to take the front axle outers off. New ones are easy, but not those older ones. Scotty
@bigDbigDbigD Hey, that is slow for me, don't want to make it boring, After all, you can watch it over and over again here in UA-cam, it doesn't cost anything. Scotty Kilmer
Hey, I'm busy as all heck fixing cars too, and I work by myself. If anyone out there can help me get more sponsors, then I will force myself to make more videos. Scotty Kilmer
Yes, that's the Cave Man way of changing out bearings, nothing wrong with that. I used to do that when I was a kid with no money. Scotty Kilmer
it's just a european bearing removal tool, but it costs 800 something bucks. I got it free when I was on TV, no way I'd spend that kind of money on such a simple tool
@johnnybravo10591 Of course, I use one myself, but assume most people don't have em. but at harbor freight tools you're only looking at a hundred bucks when theyre on sale.
@streetbominking1 Tons of reasons, out of ballance tires, bent wheel rims, out of alignment front end, or worn front end parts. Try wheel ballancing first. Scotty
@TK42138 Ah, yes, BUT even I have to take some hub assemblies in to a local machine shop where they use their 200 ton press to get real stinkers out. Scotty Kilmer
@furqanrauf Well, they are idiots then, there is only one wheel bearing at each wheel.the same as this video, watch it again and you'll see how it's done. Scotty
@furqanrauf there is no inner wheel bearing, there is only one wheel bearing on each side, a very large bearing. It's exactly the same as this video. Scotty
@ImHereToAnnoyYou depends whether I'm paying for it, or someone else. Shelby cobras are cool if someone else is, toyotas are if I'm paying for them. Scotty
Tis true. But on this old junker corolla all the boots were all torn out to begin with, so I just used the fork as I was replacing them all anyway. Scotty Kilmer
Scotty I have a question. I know I need a new front left wheel bearing. I might as well change the front right one also? I’m assuming it would be in the same condition as the left? And lastly how much would a place charge me to do this in 2020? Thank you so much!
why, I'm just telling people what's out there and what stuff costs. I didn't buy the SIR tool, I got it free years ago. Great tool, just expensive.
@lexusfan100 if your mehanic has a wireless sound machine like in my video "finding the source of car noises", have him use that to pinpoint the sound.
@avsrule247 YES, but they cost a lot more, and in many cases, they are not sold as a unit. If you can buy a unit, feel free if money is no object.
@ClankyRochet find a real front end mechanic, most give free estimates. So many things can do that, you need a real expert to check it out correctly.
not quite, I have the harbor freight kit as a back up and parts are much cheaper and won't do as many different types of vehicle bearing set ups
@zbvvc crawl under and check, if the axle is broken it will be obvious as it will be spinning in the air in front of the broken part. Scotty
@eckart21 As with everything else, bigger is better. At least a 12 ton press, and sometimes I have to borrow another's 40 ton press. Scotty
@TheEastwood09 Not yet, but I replace the entire drive axle as they make em in china now brand new for less than 60 bucks in most cases. Scotty
@bgrich2003 I use a small vice grip pliars to grab the spinning shiny part, then remove the nut with that holding it from spinning. Scotty
Hey, I'm a mellow mechanic. Many are drunks and people haters over time. Can be a nasty job, but I work by myself so it's better for me.
@benny5825 could be, but tons of things can do that, from worn tie rods and ball joints to strut mounts. Not an easy discovery. Scotty
@adolescent900 you can buy a joint, but shafts are now made in China and the whole shaft costs me 59 bucks, so I just replace em.Scotty
easier said than done. Many times they stick on and even a professional tie rod puller will not get em off and a torch is needed.
@veedabestchef the complete bearing press out and in kit did cost that much, but it claims to do every vehicle out there. Scotty
@benny5825 Normally not, wheel bearings roar as you drive fast when they are worn, ball joints and tie rods and such clunk. Scotty
