When tightening this type of wheel bearing do you use a torque setting? How tight is tight? Based on your experience, how many miles before wheel bearings fail?
+ktm3009v 110 foot pounds at least. Wheel bearings can outlast the whole car depending on the quality. Many American cars (particularly heavy SUVs) need them replaced every 5-10 years.
I understand your comment; this IS easy on what appears to be a front wheel drive, because the rear wheel just free-wheels. rear wheel and all-wheel drive is more difficult as the bearing does need to be pressed out.
Scotty makes it look so easy he makes you want to pick up your wrench and have ago. Nice and simple to follow. I had been leaving off fixing that noisy wheel bearing for months lol!
Good video, but did you use jack stands when you did this repair? uh-oh, I for one would be scared shitless to get under a car supported by only a jack :-(
You know what you do in this case? When you take the tire off place it under the car near where the wheel assembly is. The jack fails the car will land on your tire. It may scratch it, but oh well lol.
Thank you Mr.kilmer for taking your time to make these videos because they've help me learn a lot about cars and saved me a lot of money and you deserve more than just UA-cam views 👍🏾
My wheel bearing was totally worn, with a loud scraping and humming sound penetrating into the cabin. Fortunately it was an old Toyota, so I managed to drive it from London UK into mainland Europe all the way to Italy, and back to the UK. It was a loud road trip, and I should have bought earplugs, but the car kept going. Then after I returned, I drove it for another 3'000 miles around the UK, before I decided to eventually pay up the £200 and to my local mechanic for a new bearing. It's now quiet and peaceful in the car. I wouldn't have taken that risk with another manufacturer, but I had a little faith in Toyota.
Scotty Kilmer, I respect you a ton and know you know your shit, but I don't understand a couple things here. You don't use a torque wrench on the axle nut, which is extremely important (many bearings get ruined by improper torque on the axle nut) and you are putting the lug nuts on with an impact wrench, which usually leads to overtightening. Again I know you know your shit, but I am just wondering about those two things.
I think that's a very common mistake made, one very easy to commit when you're inexperienced. Starting lugnuts by hand is a necessity, as you know instantly if it's threading on correctly, while an impact gun can crossthread a fastener in an instant. The only time it's ok to use an impact for lugnuts is if you're using a torque stick, even then they have to be started by hand.
Jonathan Gingiloski I don't think he used a torque wrench at all honestly, which is why he didn't mention it. It makes no sense why he isn't using one, as you cannot reliably judge torque by feel. Improper axle nut torque is downright dangerous and will destroy wheel bearings, while improper lug nut torque will warp rotors if too tight, and obviously if they are too loose you risk them spinning off. I've seen so many snapped wheel studs from people cranking the lugs too tight, and studs also break many times from the lugs being too loose as well, when the lugs begin backing off, the wheel wobbles and destroys the studs through metal fatigue. I have no idea why an experienced mechanic like him is impacting on wheel studs and not using a torque wrench...
I completely agree with everything you said Dennis. I wonder how long that bearing will last with a completely unknown amount of torque on that nut. I'm good with a cheater bar or impact wrench for removal but I strictly use a torque wrench for assembly. It only takes a second to set and you don't run the risk of taking the heads off of bolts or under torqueing them.
Jonathan Gingiloski You sound like you do work correctly and safely, that's great to see. The little extra time you spend to do it right the first time is much better than the time and cost to have to redo the job when your new parts fail, or even worse get seriously injured from something like your wheel flying off after your wheel bearing fails. I've seen brand new wheel bearings fail after a few thousand miles from people who replaced them and didn't torque the axle nut correctly. The less knowledgeable backyard mechanics tend to just crank it on with a cheater bar and pipe combo super tight, thinking "tighter is better" without even bothering to use a torque wrench. Overtightened axle nuts lead to a massive preload on the bearing, and usually a catastrophic failure. Couple weeks ago a car was towed into the shop, wheel bearing had failed after only a few thousand miles for the exact reason previously mentioned, the tire was bent out at nearly a 45 degree angle, and the wheel had nearly separated. I am all for the do it yourself mentality, I started off as do it yourselfer before persuing a career in automotive myself, but it's important you do your research and are willing to invest in the tools to do it right. That's why this video kinda irked me, because these are the kinds of videos DIY'ers watch to learn how to do repairs, if they go torquing on their axle nuts with no torque wrench, and impacting on their lug nuts, VERY bad things can happen to them on the road. This video is teaching dangerous techniques...

What model car did you replace it on? I’ve got a 2006 Ford Fusion with a bad left front wheel bearing and I really want to learn how to (and think I can) do it myself. Was it your first time, and were you successful the first time?
@@SteveHacker 2007 infiniti g35 AWD, not my first time, this car its just replacing the hub assembly, but the first car I did it on required a hydraulic press to remove old bearing
thabg007 I think mine can be done with a slide hammer and bearing press kit (rentable from auto parts store)... I think the hub can be done as one piece on mine though too...
Damn that was one of the best instruction videos. You are an absolute peach Scottie! My grandfather was one of the best mechanics in this world and you're just like him! We truly need more people like you in the world today!
Wow nice well done job and good to know I like ur helpfull videos thanks

with Scotty i press like before i watch the video because i like his style.
my salutations and respect to the man Scotty the best 👍👍👍👍
You should make a video about how not to use an impact to tighten your lug nuts lol
Very easy to understand his videos, makes it seem easy to do.
In real life, thing don't come apart or go together that easy.
this guy is informative and comedic
Scotty, how was your motorcycle ride? :-)
Ur videos have been helping me fix my families trucks and cars for years! Thanks scotty. Ur videos really help
If you overheat your brakes where they start smoking, , wheel bearings will be toast in 5000 miles
Or a car accident, or hit a curb when sliding on ice at 40mph with van turned at 15 degrees... You need one the next day... 🤣
It's tight when the wrench stops turning
@@wkroutz wow, no. there are specs for your spindle nut that must be followed or you could lose a wheel while driving.
Good communication Scotty within a few seconds I knew where this video was going. Thanks.
This video should be entitled - 'How to replace a bad wheel bearing' and not 'How to find if a wheel bearing is bad'.
what are we, Mr. Pedantic?
That was the best instructional video I have ever ever seen
I had a bad wheel bearing once, but I didn’t know till my wheel came off. Lol
No Toby Maguire face for the hammer part ? Really?
You've helped me out so much Scotty. You're the best!!
Why does my car use press bearings -_- this looks SOOO much easier
Me, too.
You can usually buy the assembly the bearings press into with the bearings already in it, but it will cost more.
Like 5-10x more expensive.
Good video, but did you use jack stands when you did this repair? uh-oh, I for one would be scared shitless to get under a car supported by only a jack :-(
Yep, that's how people die.
Always use multiple supports.
Most people just use a jack
You know what you do in this case? When you take the tire off place it under the car near where the wheel assembly is. The jack fails the car will land on your tire. It may scratch it, but oh well lol.
I'll keep following thus gutly any car problems I find his videos and I thank you sooooooo mich again for helping me out again
2:51 i can hear your air compressor
Thank you Mr.kilmer for taking your time to make these videos because they've help me learn a lot about cars and saved me a lot of money and you deserve more than just UA-cam views 👍🏾
At 3:12 you keep referring to those nuts as bolts!
Great video otherwise.
Go screaming chickens!
Bad bearings rumble. To double check before removing wheel spin and listen for rumble. Great advise Scotty.
3:02 your hand is blocking what you're doing
Sam stop
check the brake pads for wear, and also the brake dust shield which can bend and scrape when flexing on a turn
How do I tell if my muffler bearing is bad?
+Dennis R I was thinking the same exact thing. He made the whole video, why not mention to torque the nut and lugs to specification?
Jeez, i knew in the first ten seconds you were also a media personality. you just made another fan today! thanks for the video!
Scotty, you make it sound so smooth and easy!
Scotty is the best internet mechanic
Really appreciate your channel, Scotty. Excellent content, as always.
Best wheel bearing replacement tutorial
I think I’m getting addicted watching Scotty’s videos
thanks for great tips been watching your videos for 3 years, thank man.
Scotty always makes it seem easy!
Thanks so much for this video. I will be replacing my rear wheel bearing tonight.
You make this look exceedingly simple!
