@junaid korai Great idea! If I'm ever in México City i will cover that topic
@junaid korai I honestly have no idea. From what i understand Mexico City is fairly expensive. But $500 you might be able to survive, but very meagerly. I would just do some research on it brother and find out for yourself
@junaid korai They are both different. But honestly i am not 100% sure. But you can simply find out by doing a quick Google search
LISTEN_UP SERIOUSLY rub DMSO into you knees and your pain will go away and your knees will get healthier and not worse! Plz trust me, hundreds of millions of farmers are using this and organ transplants come frozen packed in DMSO! Trust me! Buy it from a farm supply and it is cheap and the exact same stuff as what the pharmaceutical industry uses! It is marked because they don't want people buying their medicines from a farm supply!
Thanks for the sacrifice to make the video in the heat and a bad knee. Thanks. I constantly watch different videos on living in Mexico, but you are the one giving hope to different categories of people on how they can make it happen. I am glad I came upon your channel. Thanks for your time. I will definitely support your work.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Welcome aboard!
Yep... VERY affordable. I'm on SSDI and live very comfortably. But I am a simple person and don't spend money frivolously. Great video and information.
PS Parque Santa Ana... you just walked in MY hood. Such a cool place
Thanks for sharing!
I am also on SSDI. Can I ask you how you can live in Mexico without losing your SSDI and Medicare. Thank you.
@@TheEmster2011 You are not required to live in the US just because you are on SSDI. There are only a handful of countries they wont deposit your money to. I keep mine in the US banks, but I could have it sent here if I wanted.
Thanks Jose! Would love to see more rental tours if possible! Gracias
Sounds good!
Just found your videos today! Stoked on all the info you provide and your honest feedback. I love the comments too. I am an American single mom with a 2 1/2 year old who is half Chicana. I’m originally from San Diego and almost moved to Baja, but moved to North Carolina instead for family. Yet, I’ve wanted to live in Mexico for years and even more so now for my daughter. Another year of saving and I think I’ll be well on my way. I’d like to immerse us in the language and culture as well as provide something. I just don’t know what that is yet? Thanks for what your doing. Keep it up 👍
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for sharing with us! Good luck on your journey!
I just told my husband that if your worried about living in Mexico 🇲🇽 on Social security maybe you should be more worried about staying in the U.S. on it , we own our home , but the electricity, grocery and internet are getting really expensive - 😳 . I can’t tell you the last time I paid less than $15 for a sub-par steak ( meat lately in my area is poor quality) I think your making great sense about how people want to live or retire , why would anyone want to settle for a stressful life , trying to pay outrageous monthly bills when there’s a better option out there. As always I enjoyed watching your videos and hearing your opinion 😃👍👍❤️❤️🇲🇽😎👏
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Exactly, plus you will be away from the toxic atmosphere, to me that is just as important as everything else.
Yes, I own my house outright but taxes and insurance run $700+/month. When I retire it will be more than I want to pay. It's also way to big for empty nesters. It'll bring a nice rental income too!
@@fdm2155 Taxes, insurance, and maintenance likely pushes it up to $850-1000.
Great video Jose! Will be there on Saturday to check out the city for a week. really excited! Thanks for all your informative videos!

Thank you Jose for the info ! Love it 👍👍👊🏽✊🏾
No problem 👍
So very informative! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
I go back and forth when it comes to Merida or San Cristobal de las Casas. They’re both beautiful cities. I’ll say that Merida is a more upscale city but I love San Cristobal’s climate and its small city feeling.
Love your vids!
Great info Jose...!

Thanks Bud..these are helpful.
I'm doing the math to see if it makes sense.

Hey Jose, what is the current C-19 situation in Mérida? Maybe it's time for an update on that? Thanks a lot for your informative videos! 👍🏻
Good thing you mentioned that! Just finished recording an episode just need to edit it! Expect it to drop by tomorrow!

Oh thank you so much for putting a written summary in - and - especially, for putting it at the start of the video. There are so may cost of living videos made so poorly. A video itself is a poor format for COL info. so, thank you for sharing it the right way within your video. Brother....I am moving back...lived there for five years in the mid 80s....best place i ever lived....and then....it was WAY differente.....
As I have said before, I have to stay for my mom, she has no one else, in another year or two, when God wills it, I will be leaving the states, I know the lifestyle in Mexico is different, it is why I love it, I am also realistic and understand it won't be a vacation to move here and get settled, residency and acclimation takes time, I still plan to cook meals and not eat out all of the time, but to be able to live and easily pay your bills, not live in a toxic divided environment and have blue skies 99% of the time plus the best mezcal, organic fruit, produce, meats, what more can you ask for.
good luck on your journey!
I was caretaker for my mother back in Puerto Rico until she passed two years ago, when I left everything behind and moved to Guadalajara. Like an idiot I then moved to the lower 48 and I am now thinking of moving back there for good. I love the USA, but life here is sad and lonely.
Jose ... i think that the Merida Chamber of Commerce should definitely to hire you as another extremely informative video here :) :) :) .
A bit off topic: since we live just to the north of El Paso, Tx (Alamogordo) we're gonna be watching all of the Mexico election results later on this evening on Canal 44 Juarez :)
For sure! They know where to reach me!
Thanks Jose !
We are cool weather lovers and think we may end up in San Cristobal de las casas, in Chiapas. Our biggest concern is we have 5 senior dogs…rescues and strays that we love like children. They are all sizes from 7 pounds to 125 pounds. How difficult is it going to be to rent a house or apartment that will allow 5 dogs ??? We absolutely will not leave them behind. Thx !…love your videos !
Everyone has dogs in Mexico you should be fine looking for a dog friendly place
Mérida si the best!!! I love it
❤️
Good video. Rents in the places I want to live in are much higher than Merida. I'm looking at Zihua, PV and Mazatlan. The rents are going through the roof.
That is everywhere these days unfortunately
Mexico isn't just an option for people who are at the low end of the income scale; it could also be an option for people who are not thrilled about paying property tax and state income tax in the US.
Exactly!
Yeah I now a American guy he said that. He was tired of USA taxes
@@JoseArteagaTravels but unless you work for a corporation, right?
Could you give us a video on how do we get our money from our checks to mexico, what cards to get to use that don't cost a lot. Basically, etting sit up prior to moving.
I'll look into it!
I'm living in Cuernavaca Morelos for years and I'm not sure I'd be able to tolerate the weather there. I just looked up the temp. it was 96° with a feel like of 106°. And I think it's too hot where I am. Lol I lived in Thailand and hated the heat and humidity there but the food, culture, and affordability made up for it.
For sure brother the heat is not for everyone!
Thank you for the inspiration. I want to move to oaxaca because i love Good food, fun & teq. Mescal
Great reason to move there!
Really looking forward to my first “exploratory” trip in July - I’m curious if you’ve seen many electric vehicles?
I haven't.... yet. But I do know They are opening up a Tesla dealership in town I already saw it with my own eyes!
The cost of an MRI is about $2,500 where I live. I had a bad attack of gastritis 2 years ago on Christmas Eve...so bad I thought my appendix was bursting. Went to the emergency room for 4 hours...they did nothing for me but run some simple lab work($35) and "observe" me. Which meant my sister who drove me to hospital spent about 3 hours and 55 minutes of that time with me in the room no one else came in but a nurse for about 2 minutes. Cost: $3,250 +$35...yeah you've got it good Jose.
Forget to add that was out of pocket as my job has no health coverage.
In Mexico all that would have have cost you about $100 bucks give or take. Freaking nuts just 4 hours of hanging out at the hospital cost you that much!
@@elliegonzales8212 Terrible. Well everything in Mexico is out of pocket as well. Like I have to pay for my MRI like right away, there is no medical billing lol Pay as you go. But yeah regardless it is much more affordable out here
@@JoseArteagaTravels Yep if I can ever get out there it would take a lot of pressure of me. Maybe one day.
@@JoseArteagaTravels Yes it's outrageous...no other word for it. I said 2 minutes but maybe she took 4 drawing the blood sample...Lol. And I really think they kept me there all that time to jack up the bill as they charge the room by the hour...I could have suffered at home for 0 dollars.
Im looking at moving to PDC in September. What is the speed of the internet service you pay for. Great videos... thank you for making them!
I get faster and more reliable internet here its 100mbs
I was in Merida 3 years ago,
I rented a car and everywhere I went, I had to find a pay parking garage, then it was nerve wracking just to think someone hit the car and you being a tourist be taking advantage of, at the end, overall it was cheap with a peace of mind just to take an Uber or a taxi.
Thanks for sharing! Yes your best option at the end of the day is just using Uber or something like that instead of having to worry about your rental all the time
Love your videos !
Dumb question….we don’t watch much tv, but growing up in the south, I’m a big college football fan. Go Gators !
Is it possible to get all the tv channels to watch games- ABC, CBS, ESPN, FOX, SEC NETWORK, etc ??? We will probably be living in San Cristobal de las Casas. Thanks !
Yup all you need is a VPN with that you connect to the US internet and then you just pay for streaming services like ESPN and just watch it from the comfort of your new home in Mexico. There are other ways to connect but that is the most straight forward.
Saludos Jose

"You know you gotta buy toilet paper and you know , all kinds of "crap" )) Sorry, I found humor in that comment. haha , good video though.

Instead of taking medicines / drugs for your knees issue, you should could consider taking supplements like magnesium, turmeric, vitamin D, bromelain, and glucosamine, you can buy all of this on Amazon. It could just be a lack of magnesium.
I already take those supplements instead of Medicine. But my knees are already at a point where physical therapy and natural meds can't do much more. Thanks for the suggestion!
Question: I live a super strict sporty life, meaning,I don't eat junk, only rice, proteins and a bit of healthy fatty foods. Don't spend on tech, clothing etc. I basically need a house, gym,my diet and the basic electricity,water... In Italy (which is pretty expensive) I spent 250€ a month for food,in the Canary islands 180-200€,I suppose in Mexico it'll be sensibly cheaper... Gym are about 15$/month there correct?
Correct you can live out here and maintain your diet and your expenses no worries.

Whats a good place to live cheaply, ie. rent being low.
Mexico!
We are 59 and 54 and our daughter built a retirement house in Queretaro but wont live there for years. She suggested we retire early and go live in her house. Yay !!!
But we hear the Mexican authorities are cracking down on perpetual tourists doing visa runs every 6 months ??? If true, we are out of luck, being too young for social security. We have $100k+ in accounts. With our daughter and grandkids being dual citizens, she is married to a Mexican….
Any suggestions ?
Also we’d be bringing our senior dogs. Do they also have to leave every 6 months ?….stupid question maybe…
Thx….love your videos !!!…hoping you can help as guessing you are a perpetual tourist ?
That is all fake news. There is no crack down on anyone. If they wont deport any other group of immigrants they are not going to deport the untouchables. Mexico is more open than it has ever been and those people out there spreading fake news have another agenda. I will be making a video on all this because the fake news is getting ridiculous. As for your dogs, no they do not need to renew their visas lol and btw you can now renew your visas in country as long as you meet certain requirements. But long story short immigration is not cracking down, you will NEVER be deported, and you are very Welcome in the country of Mexico. You guys have absolutely nothing to worry about. And if you still have doubts contact the Mexican Lawyer I have on my website for more confirmation.
Hello,Jose thanks for helpful information! How to differentiate original permanent residence card from fake one please?
You have to get it through Mexican Immigration
@@JoseArteagaTravels us I told you last day I got this card while out of mexico somebody brought for me but I have doubt
@@andualemtesfaye1409 i have no idea what you're talking about. The only way to get a residency in Mexico is through Mexican Immigration. If someone in another country sold you a residency then it is probably Fake
the cost of living varies from video to video but if someone had $5K to live how different would that experience be verses say $2K. Just curious to see how different that looks?
With 5k a month you are living in Full Luxury, while with 2k a month you are living extremely comfortable.
Hola, I’m renting in Mérida now. Where did you find a nice house for 300 dollars? How many bedrooms and bathrooms?
All the links are on my website josearteaga.com
Wow! Full body MRI"s cost 5,000 to 10,000 out of pocket. Insurance does not cover that in the states.
Exactly
1200 usd is enough to have somewhat decent lifestyle?
Do they have Aldi or something similar?
Yes it is enough and no Aldi.....

😎
A MRI in USA Cost up to $4375 so $ 500 it’s super cheap. I work with doctors fir many years. I know medicine in Mexico it’s relatively cheap compare with USA I know people go to Mexico from here to buy medicine

How do you get long term visa
Check out the Mexican Immigration website and see which one you qualify for
I find it interesting that you stated depending on the dollar or peso....your rent is more or less, is that correct?
Correct the value of the currency is constantly changing. When I first moved to the home I currently live in my rent in Dollars was around 250 with an exchange rate of 21 to 1 and today at this current exchange rate of 17 to 1 my rent is 325 it has never changed in pesos.
@@JoseArteagaTravels so basically it fluctuates? Somewhat to when your rent increases yearly in the USA. Are you telling me that it could go up and down anytime in Mexico?...monthly maybe? Lol, sorry for the odd question just wondering if that's how that works, if I am making sense. Thank you, love your videos!
@@ivy4rivers Yes that is how it works.... The value of the Local currency is based off of the US Dollar. So as the US Dollar loses value in the US it is also losing value in Mexico. Makes sense? If you still have difficulty understanding just find some videos on currency exchange for more information

Merida doesn't seem to have any tall buildings which is unusual for a city of 1 mil people, from your videos its has giant village vibe.
Also no people on the street, are locals friendly towards foreigners, how easy is to integrate into local society or its more like 2 tier, gringos and Mexicans dont mix well and all interactions are kept at superficial level. Similar to how most expats live in Asia

Is the Merida city water safe to drink, wash veggies, etc??
I'm deathly afraid of Montezuma.
No city water in any area of the world is safe to drink. Everyone out here uses filtered water. Many people out here drink the city water and use it for many things and it won't really cause any problems outside of kidney stones because of all the minerals in the water. In other parts of Mexico they suffer from the same thing as in the USA, which is lacking infrastructure and the problems come from the pipes and not the water processing plant. So if I were you, do as the locals do and drink filtered water and use it for everything else as well.

Merida is probably the most expensive city in all of Mexico 🇲🇽
Full of high-end malls fancy shops n expensive properties
My opinion
Yes Certain things out here are more expensive than in other parts of Mexico but it off sets with lower costs in housing and other things. Still very cheap compared to the USA
@2 Gringos
Your opinion is incorrect. Go to Monterrey or CDMX if you really want to see expensive and fancy properties and malls. Keep in mind Merida is the safest city in all of Mexico and North America outside of Canada. So while, yes..you can find cheaper places to live in MX..you will not have the safety you have in Merida. In Merida you can walk the streets at 2am and nobody bothers you. Try that in other cities in MX of similar size and see what happens. Also..Merida was called "The Pearl of Mexico" in it's heyday. It was NEVER a poor city. It was and is still filled with educated, cultured and wealthy people who like living well and shopping for the best. And it has top notch medical facilities too that aren't available in cheaper Mexican cities. But the beauty of Merida is that non-wealthy people can still live there comfortably at incredibly affordable prices. And you will NOT find the variety of food, culture, shopping and entertainment in lower priced cities as you do in Merida. Not to mention the beautifully hospitable and friendly Mayan people. If you just want to live cheaply in MX without the safety, culinary and entertainment variety, best medical care, and friendly people..then I would suggest trying Tijuana or Rosarito.
@@Nightbird. 2am lol who the f*** is up at 2am not me that's forsure n If I was I would not be out walking the streets IN ANY CITY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD LOL
It's my opinion so it's not wrong that's why it's called opinion lol. Thanks though. Merida is a great city don't get me wrong but it's definitely not for everyone n your sarcasm about Tijuana classy touch..lol..
Just not our cup of tea. Sorry u can't grasp that.
It's like any big city in North America. Again opinion lol.

PS Good quality food all over Mexico I don't need a fancy dinner to have a Decent meal
Not true. Try Ensenada in Baja California. Prices are like USA! Or Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.
@@2GringosOnTheGulf We walk our dogs 5 a.m. everyday here in Merida before the weather gets hot. Absolutely love Merida. Not a better place place to live.....my opinion.
You put the mexican life out there on truth.the United States is insane everybody talks about how crooked Mexico is,but don't never mention how messed up and crooked the u.s. is and Canada...the u.s. is extreme the government aims to try and take people's whole lives in 5 minutes....I'd rather have a cop that will bend the rules for pay.rather then what happens in the United States..i commented on more of your channel and I agree with you on things you have mentioned...u.s. citizens need to stay home who do not know how to hustle how to make money.another thing is,the police if a person leans on the police to protect them being super super scared of there own shadow the citizens need to stay in the United States and canada.that shit is seriously insane...you made the right move there guy to go to mexico.hey man it's beautiful there i love the culture I'm learning Spanish and my daughter is spanish.

Jose, great video! We adjusted our projected budget based on your numbers. Thank you!
Can you please do a video about medical things - IMSS or private insurance? We are 10 yrs older than you and for us medical becomes more and more important as we age...We already experienced medical doctors in MX (paid $25 for specialists, and $90 for a comprehensive X-Ray+film of all digestive system at private hospital - wow!). Medicine we got was expensive though $25-$30 for a month for one med, and we had to get 3 meds for 3 mo each...that got expensive quickly!
We don't know much about the quality of IMSS and about private insurance costs for 50yrs old couple.
I will be doing videos on some of those topics in the future but I am a bit limited because of my age, I can only really talk about my experiences with insurance and the system I am using. I don't have much knowledge about insurance of IMSS or retirement stuff or anything like that. But as I have to get a few of those things I will be reporting back to all of you with my experience. But in all honesty I think it might be better to do some research on this yourself because by the time i need constant health insurance and many meds and all that it will be a very long time. And yes some meds can seem expensive when compared to the doctor visit but from my experience and others.... it is still way cheaper than in the US. Hope that helps for now! Also Life insurance is a must have out here for many things, it also counts as health insurance. Again not for everyone i haven't needed it until living here for 3 years...... some never need it at all.

By all rights, it's NOT that much cheaper to live there then here in the States.
Which that breaks my heart because I've been looking at living abroad.
Where ever your living, do some Rual Country Living, the City is not for me!
Thanks for sharing! Have no idea where in the US you live for around $1,000 but i'm sure we would all love to know!
