Helldivers was originally conceived as an arcade-y experience where the players and enemies are glass cannons. Dive into hell and bring hell kind of thing. So yes, it’s world and satirical theme are inspired off starship troopers and other sci fi, but gameplay wise, it was always intended to be its own thing. Even the second game’s shift from the serious-with-occasional-satirical-humor tone of the first game to a cinematic one can be understood as a necessity of the shift from 2d gameplay to 3d gameplay. So I wouldn’t say that the developers reimagined the fantasy of helldivers to be more like titan fall or other sci fi, but rather to be more like their original vision. Personally, as a HD1 vet, I think arrowhead lost their way for a while with the live service model. HD1 and all of their other games handled dlc more traditionally, so I think it’s likely they didn’t know how to handle live service monetization (let alone for such a popular game) and as result succumbed to greedy pressures by making the game harder to elongate playtime for a game that was built around an arcade like experience. But with community pressure, they’ve found their way back to their roots, and now the game feels more like HD1 than ever before
i guess you all make good points here. i dont personally think we are run-of-the-mill, thats the SEAF. but i do agree that we arent "special forces" like spartans or pilots. i think its a sort of middle ground that's like, SEAF who were given permission to make their own decisions (we direct an entire ship of frozen souls to war) and to select their mission equipment and have strategem access. SEAF absolutely do NOT get to make such decisions. Still, have we considered that maybe we are power-scaling the wrong way? We can choose to bring in advanced movement, defence, and support, and that is objectively a role usually reserved for commanders or elites. I think rather than looking at it from traditional roles, maybe the idea is just that the style of scifi that superearth uses does not really allow for that kind of advanced stuff, and instead we are special forces simply because we are allowed to make those decisions, to call in strategems, and to bring hell. the power fantasy is of a different flavour compared to those other games, and is relatively muted and grounded. but it is still power beyond a regular soldier, ya get me? @@emilsingapurcan8054 yes! This is exactly the kind of arcade like glass cannon premise of the game I was referring. They are elite simply because of the (hilariously expensive) firepower they are given
I followed the game since it's release, but sadly didn't own a PC or PS5 to play it. Now I've finally bought a PC 3 weeks ago and HD2 was the first game I played on it and I joined exactly at the right time just after the patch. It's so great to see the community care about the game and the devs understanding the community and fixing the issues. Thank you all and thank you Arrowhead!

Things have definitely changed! I mean, I was in the beginning, went through the nerfs and the patches... Take a month long hiatus, and come back to new bug and bot variants, buffed weapons, and the game went up THOUSANDS in player count daily, and remains steady. I mean, the nerfs made it go from around 50k down to a 25k average. Then the patches came in, the buffs, new enemies, and it went up slowly, and now it's staying back at 50k most days, and about 20k when the NA timezones are at night. Still miss the days of 300k+ average though. Those were the golden days. The PSN restrictions definitely killed off 100k+ players from around the globe.
I may have leaned toward the darkside for a time, but my heart was always with my men. I never struck down a fellow diver in "protest." I did not purposefully lose missions. I only ever stuck to the bug side, which I still kind of do. The difference is now, it's not out of revenge. When the time comes, I shall strike down humanity's metallic nemises. But for now, the bugs require a culling of their own. May we fight together when the bugs are contained, and the gloom has finally faded.
It's honestly nice that it's fun again. Before, our team was bitter and frustrated, nobody wanted to fight anymore. Some of us returned to HD1 and others never came back. High Command and Brasch finally listened ✊ If Arrowhead ever does big in-game event cutscenes or something, stuff like receiving back-up in the style of 0:53 would be gloriously democratic. As we can see from Martechi's shorts, there's an insane amount of untapped potential in fleet stuff.
We all dive with some sort of purpose. Never forget why you fight. Whether it be to sate your bloodlust for the enemies of freedom, or your more like me, someone who is willing to lay down their life to ensure their compatriots get back alive. Forgetting your reason for fighting leads to cracks in the bond we all share as brothers and sisters in arms.
