    In this video I mentioned that I fill voids prior to installing granite. I failed to mention that is not the job of the granite installer to do so. I did total renovation work so drywall was an easy part of my job and helped me to make my jobs look better. Granite installers have a hard job with heavy work, their job is to install the granite properly, not to fix walls. Thank you for understanding!

    Just got to say I have zero experience. My dad was the DIY person. What I know is more car mechanic related issues. I recently bought a home and I’m now discovering the imperfections and things I want to improve and fix. Due to the pandemic I’ve been watching hundreds of videos on how to do home improvements, how to DIY projects. The only issue is that my Dad who was the handy man passed 6 years so now I have to try and learn this stuff on my own. But watching your videos has been awesome. Better than most. Seems like you will be my go to UA-cam instructor. Haha... I would like to email you to get some advice on what tools you recommend I should buy, what brand, and things like that. Ok I hope to hear back from you

    Nice video and I can use this idea. I bet this works well with baseboards that have a gap as well. As a DIYer I’ve gotten pretty good with dry wall work. Nothing like a little practice. I’ve always disliked the call in a baseboard gap from some work we had done during a remodel but I never thought about floating out the wall to eliminate it. Timing is perfect because we are going to do a complete interior repaint. 2 thumbs up Paul!

      The other option is to dry fit the countertop , scribe a line onto the countertop with a carpenters pencil pressed against the wall to use it as your guide. Then take a belt sander to the line you scribed and the countertop will fit perfect. Easier to sand down the counter a little than it is to build up a wall, sand, prime and paint.

      Me too Mike, it really comes in handy at times. I remember when caulk wouldn't stretch at all, in fact it would shrink so bad you had to go over it several times to fill any void. The beauty of modern technology.

      Good morning my friend, this particular problem exists because the stud probably has a large crown in it. Many times you see gaps like this because the corner bead for the drywall may be bulging due to a crown in the stud, this is why metal studs are preferred by many. A good friend of mine has a commercial drywall buisiness and he builds all of his residential projects with metal studs. I have worked with metal studs in the past but I prefer wood only because I grew up using it. I guess i'm more comfortable doing what I know. Have a great day !

    WOW Paul, at least 2 dozen tips that I did not know and I have done a fair amount of drywall and patching. I would have just caulked that gap, and never have thought of doing this!
    Thanks, Buddy! It is amazing how there could be a gap in a 24" run, probably a stud in the middle? Oh, yeah the outlets are there, so dead give away. One drywaller actually puts like an inch of water over the top of compound inside the tub, then seals it, then just dumps it out the next time the uses it. I have learned to consult you next time I do anything, this is proof that I don't know everything!

    • @paulstoolbox

      I've never tried that, I'll have to look into it. I usually lay a small walmart bag over the top of my mud and put a small amount of water on top before I store it. I show that in another video that is in my Drywall playlist. Thanks for the new tip buddy, I really appreciate that!

    Paul, Lot of great comments 🙂
    Try this out.
    1- use 20-min Hot Mud. Flip knife over and push mud into crack. If your splash guard ever move, & they do. You won't see a deep crack, if you just floated the surface, as you did.
    Using hot mud allows you to float the wall, check for low spots correct them, wet knife the surface for ultra smooth finish.
    Return later that day to prime/paint.
    Done 😆🙄
    Time to play with the dog.

    Quick question, just to make sure I understand the process. If you were to pull the countertop away from the wall, there would be a ridge where the patch met the top of the backsplash, correct? It obviously isn’t visible, just curious.

    • @paulstoolbox
      @paulstoolbox  5 років тому

      I sometimes wet sand with a grout sponge, it has a rough texture on one side so it cuts the mud a little better than a regular sponge. I use it in another video that is in my drywall playlist. Wet sanding is better when you are working on a remodel because it keeps the dust down. I sand with dry paper on new construction or sometimes on a small patch. Thanks!

      Good morning Jodie. No, you mix it in a bucket and whip it up like cake batter. You will notice a huge difference when you whip it up. It gets very creamy and easy to use. You just want to make sure that it is creamy and not thick and lumpy. It doesn’t matter if you handmix or use a mixer, but you don’t have to do both. Sometimes I move it around in the pan just to keep it creamy. I hope this helps, have a great weekend!

    Hi Paul, if I use this method in my kitchen on an exterior wall, will the dried mud withstand the expansion and contraction of said wall caused by temperature changes from weather variations?

    • @drophammer776
      @drophammer776 2 роки тому

      Sand exterior wall (stucco I guess)with 80 grit. Wash with soap and water. When dry apply exterior stucco repair mix. Can staple mesh onto existing wall and mudd over. Remember to seal after cure time if directions say. Can never hurt either way. You be fine

      Hi Dennis, a large roller is definitely better but my paint supplies are at my moms because I’m am renovating her bathroom. Reason to use brush then roller.
      A micro job as this uses very little product.
      Why drench a roller with primer/paint, just to waist most of it when you wash out your roller?
      Apply with brush, greater product application control on Micro area. Blend with roller like Paul did.
      Key word Micro project.
      Otherwise use a roller only😄

      Hi Dennis, I have my paint pans and rollers at my moms, she is 82, fell and broke her hip so I’m making her home handicap accessible. I gave information on repairing a gap in my wall, not a painting video. I am extremely busy and this was merely a touch up, hardly important enough to spend time retrieving my roller pan that was not needed. Thanks for watching and I hope it helped even a little bit. I guess your one of those guys that can’t be told anything. It was just Constructive criticism Next time I’ll just leave a smiley face and say great job. Have a great day😀 great job

    I think you're on point with your tips however i think this alot of work for a real world application. Caulking is applied for the purpose of filling the gap AND preventing water from running down the top of the splash guard. It needs a seal.

    • @paulstoolbox
      @paulstoolbox  5 років тому +1

      Hi Matthew, you still run a bead of caulk on the top of this but now you run a tiny bead of caulk just for sealing purposes . I know it takes a little longer than running caulk but it looks 100% better. I’ve worked on homes that were inexpensive and I’ve worked on homes that were over a million dollars. The homeowner has to see his or her home every day and eventually it will aggravate them if they are anything like me. This is my bathroom and it was irritating the heck out of me. Maybe it’s just me I’m a little on the obsessive compulsive side but it gave me peace of mind. I never tell anyone that my way is the only way, it is just another option. I really appreciate you washing and commenting! Have a great day and thanks!

    • @paulstoolbox

      Danny Acevedo , unfortunately you probably need to remove the drywall and fix or replace the stud. I had that problem on my other wall, here is a video. If you don’t have complete access to the entire stud, you can use a belt sander with 40 grit paper to sand down the high spot and replace the Sheetrock. Sorry about that! ua-cam.com/video/z8Q9idPhZmE/v-deo.html

    As a granite counter top installer I can't mud the wall to seal a gap that big. This tip is for the household or the Contractor. My job is to install the counter top, put the back splash in place and fill the gap as clean as possible. I can always use 5 minute dry fast compound to minimize the caulk usage but definitely cant do what you did for is not my place to fix that uneven walls.

    • @paulstoolbox
      @paulstoolbox  5 років тому +1

      Yehoshua D'Galvez , I totally agree with you! I did not work for anybody when I was installing granite, so I could do other things. In my business I did renovation with kitchens and baths so I would install the cabinets and the granite. I wish I would’ve mentioned that it is NOT The granite installers job to fix walls. I will put that in a caption up top because I know some customers may take it wrong.
      When I was selling the job or measuring for it I would check the walls myself. If they were very bad and needed addressing, I would mention that to the customer and if it was a small gap I would feel it prior to ordering my granite. I sometimes have small waves and I would ask them if they were putting backsplash on. If they were I would tell them what they need to do or offer to prep it, if not I would fill small void for them because it made my job look better and I did not take me long. I install granite for years and I know how hard it is buddy, I must say I am so glad I don’t do it anymore. Keep up the good work and have a good day. Thanks for watching!
