THANK YOU. I have been a professional caulker for over 40 years and I am so tired of the usual stupid advice like cutting the tip really small , not using backer rod, forcing as much caulk into the gap as possible and wet tooling. You got it right. Well done. ( of course as a professional I wouldn’t use my finger, I have specialized tools) This IS the correct way to install caulk. Again thank you for doing it right.
@@tridens6708 silicone profile tools are a gimmick that just scrapes the excess off ant doesn’t properly tool the joint which is essential to proper adhesion. You will NEVER see a professional caulker use one.
I learned some great stuff from this video! 45 degree angle, brace your hand, use headlight for visibility, don't push down into the gap, use a bucket and sponge for keeping clean, so many great tips.
I've used painters tape to mask off the surrounding surfaces to facilitate straight line and also prevent the extra caulk. Probably not an issue though with smaller gaps.
Very good! I've never heard of backer rod foam for filling in cracks. I have some caulking to do with large gaps so I'll be getting some for sure. Very helpful. Thank you!
Newbie, diyer. I installed vertical shiplap paneling on a wall and there are gaps near the window where I had to cut around the casing. How would you fill large gaps there?
This is the best video that I've ever seen. You have saved me so much time and worry. Thanks so much. You made chalking so entertaining. Could you demonstrate chalking around showers and tubs? I'm chalking my new windows tomorrow.
Pretty good video. Couple criticisms.. In someones home especially, its important to keep your hands clean. Wear gloves! Also, you talk about imperfections and then you shape your silicone with your finger tip. Use a plastic scraper with a rounded edge to maintain consistency! Lastly, use masking tape to create a perfect edge on your beads, prep the entire area with isopropyl alcohol before starting, and clean yourself and your tools with he alcohol constantly and keep a bag with you to put all your dirty wrags.
How much time it will take to caulk a bathroom , in this tempo i think 1 week , where u can do it in half n hour o 1 if u use the small caulking stick instead of finger .
It is a good idea to push the caulk into the crack when caulking instead of dragging the caulk tip. Makes for a better seal! Then you can use your finger to finish the job..😉
Super hard to get it clean that way. If you drag it and get the angle right and pay close attention, there are no gaps. But to each there own. Thanks for commenting!
One of my windows has a fairly large gap between the window frame and the window sil & drywall. About 3/8 - 1/2". Will one of these backer rods and caulk be sufficient to fill it? Whoever installed the window initially just caulked over the gap without any backfill and the caulk cracked pretty badly once it contracted and aged. I was looking at using foam poly sealant for the backfill portion and then trim and caulk over that but not sure it that is too extreme for this application.
I love using spray foam to fill gaps. Just make sure you don't over spray as it is a bear to remove. Fingernail. Seems to be the only thing that works.
Never heard of this before. We have areas where there’s gaps in baseboard and door frames, they seemed too big to caulk by themself. Would this work for baseboard and doorway/doorframe gaps?
Things i learned: 1. “You need a little bit of space the get the caulk in” 2. 1/4” is what he uses for the tip of the caulk 3. “Make sure it can release. If it doesn’t release well you’re gonna be a world of pain with all kinds of caulk coming out” 4. “You always want a little more (caulk) than you need” 5. “Keep the top clean” 6. “keep your caulk off the window” 7. Use a headlamp to get a good view of the caulk 8. “Keep your fingers clean” 9. “Always have something to throw your towels into, you don’t want to throw them on the ground or you’ll get caulk everywhere” 10. “Rub your finger off into the bucket, clean your finger off and start over” 11. “When you want to lay more caulk down, you gotta angle your finger forward with the extra caulk”
@@TheRegenerativeHome add dawn dish soap in a container of water. Wet fingers, rub fingers together till slippery. Than begin to tool your caulking. Use the swipe on and off method instead of dragging finger.
big stretch or if you really good with caulking sikaflex 1A , this guy is ok but slow and is way over tooling or fingering. Also never bareback caulk that rookie class nitril glovrs dip your hand in water and touch once , he was stroking that window sill way to much, and he left out some key techniques like how to make a pin straight line no bleed over even on orange peel textured wall without paying fir useless frogtape or why you square off the the caulking tube tip and nit leave it pointed. Paper towels wow what a waste old newspaper, mags, or i sometimes if i know its gonna get meesy esp. sika or any urethane caulking ill cut an old tube in half and then half agian forming two perfect rocking cradles for my excess caulk. Lastly should really call it sealant, tends to be less offputting.

Wow. Thanks for acknowledging all those points!
Indeed! The bracing the hand is an excellent tip, thanks for sharing!
I have watched a lot of videos and this was the best. I purchased a home with wood windows and it has a lot of gaps 🤦🏽♂️.
Thanks. I have a couple of spots that are larger gaps where my baseboard is. Never thought of filling it with a backer rod before caulking.

Wow if this is the best video you seen on caulking This nations standards are even lower than I thought
Nice tip using the putty knife to stuff the backer rod down, going to be doing this in my shower that has a deep gap at the front of the pan

Very helpful. Thank you. Nice to see a pro at work.
I loved watching you do this! cool guy! Thanks Vx
Excellent video presentation, and - I admire your thoroughness and skill. Thank you.

INCREDIBLE 🤯 Super Clean 📌
Great video. Tons of good pointers 👍
Head light was a good idea
By far the best video and most informative video yet.that I have seen on this subject thank u.
So glad u liked it!
Super helpful tips, thanks. I'm off to Home Depot for some backing rods. (I didn't even know that was a thing!)

Sorry I can't predict that one it all depends on skill level and attention to detail. Best of luck!
Can this same technique be used for bathroom shower tray sealing?
Um. Maybe. But you really need to make sure you use the right caulk with a lot of elasticity

How do you seal a crack that caulk won't seal?
Well done! Biggest ‘duh’ for me was the headlamp. What a literally BRILLIANT IDEA!!
(FWIW, the music doesn’t add a thing, IMO.)
Thanks. That is the second negative comment on the music. I will skip it next time!
best video yet, thank you, such a neat job

Interesting. I might try that!
100% how, great video. Thank you. I love bluegrass, but the fiddle doesn't add any value when I'm listening you you speak
Third strike for the music. Next time no music!
With your water you can use dawn dish soap and water it helps
That is an intersting idea. SHould work pretty good if you are having a tough time getting the caulk off with the water.

Kick ass man thanks
Would this work for tubs? I have almost a 1" gap 😳
I have a feeling that a 1" gap is going to be too large a gap to caulk successfully
I agree. I think with one inch you need something more than caulk. Like a trim piece
So that is what a back rod is!
You could use tape for a large gap, as long as you use the right type of tape.
