THANK YOU. I have been a professional caulker for over 40 years and I am so tired of the usual stupid advice like cutting the tip really small , not using backer rod, forcing as much caulk into the gap as possible and wet tooling. You got it right. Well done. ( of course as a professional I wouldn’t use my finger, I have specialized tools) This IS the correct way to install caulk. Again thank you for doing it right.

@@tridens6708 silicone profile tools are a gimmick that just scrapes the excess off ant doesn’t properly tool the joint which is essential to proper adhesion. You will NEVER see a professional caulker use one.

I've used painters tape to mask off the surrounding surfaces to facilitate straight line and also prevent the extra caulk. Probably not an issue though with smaller gaps.

Pretty good video. Couple criticisms.. In someones home especially, its important to keep your hands clean. Wear gloves! Also, you talk about imperfections and then you shape your silicone with your finger tip. Use a plastic scraper with a rounded edge to maintain consistency! Lastly, use masking tape to create a perfect edge on your beads, prep the entire area with isopropyl alcohol before starting, and clean yourself and your tools with he alcohol constantly and keep a bag with you to put all your dirty wrags.

It is a good idea to push the caulk into the crack when caulking instead of dragging the caulk tip. Makes for a better seal! Then you can use your finger to finish the job..😉

    • @TheRegenerativeHome

Super hard to get it clean that way. If you drag it and get the angle right and pay close attention, there are no gaps. But to each there own. Thanks for commenting!

One of my windows has a fairly large gap between the window frame and the window sil & drywall. About 3/8 - 1/2". Will one of these backer rods and caulk be sufficient to fill it? Whoever installed the window initially just caulked over the gap without any backfill and the caulk cracked pretty badly once it contracted and aged. I was looking at using foam poly sealant for the backfill portion and then trim and caulk over that but not sure it that is too extreme for this application.

I love using spray foam to fill gaps. Just make sure you don't over spray as it is a bear to remove. Fingernail. Seems to be the only thing that works.

    Things i learned:
    1. “You need a little bit of space the get the caulk in”
    2. 1/4” is what he uses for the tip of the caulk
    3. “Make sure it can release. If it doesn’t release well you’re gonna be a world of pain with all kinds of caulk coming out”
    4. “You always want a little more (caulk) than you need”
    5. “Keep the top clean”
    6. “keep your caulk off the window”
    7. Use a headlamp to get a good view of the caulk
    8. “Keep your fingers clean”
    9. “Always have something to throw your towels into, you don’t want to throw them on the ground or you’ll get caulk everywhere”
    10. “Rub your finger off into the bucket, clean your finger off and start over”
    11. “When you want to lay more caulk down, you gotta angle your finger forward with the extra caulk”

big stretch or if you really good with caulking sikaflex 1A , this guy is ok but slow and is way over tooling or fingering. Also never bareback caulk that rookie class nitril glovrs dip your hand in water and touch once , he was stroking that window sill way to much, and he left out some key techniques like how to make a pin straight line no bleed over even on orange peel textured wall without paying fir useless frogtape or why you square off the the caulking tube tip and nit leave it pointed. Paper towels wow what a waste old newspaper, mags, or i sometimes if i know its gonna get meesy esp. sika or any urethane caulking ill cut an old tube in half and then half agian forming two perfect rocking cradles for my excess caulk. Lastly should really call it sealant, tends to be less offputting.
