Great stuff. The first 10% of a job is always satisfying, I was 18 when you started and now 66 I hope to live long enough to see this baby start up n move. 😊
🤣🤣
Looking good Dave, one step closer 👍
Dodo mat , sounds like a dull extinct bird😊 Nice job with the boot 👍If you put a spare wheel in that wheel well you might want to submerge it in water it would make it look authentic
🤣🤣
Looking good, that Gravitex certainly gave the boot a nice finish. Yea, dodo mat is good stuff, I used it in my van. 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi Dave. Having painted 3 cars now, I think it's fair to say that I've made every mistake there is to make! I'm an expert on paint reactions, to my detriment. I know everyone has their own opinions and ways of doing things, but this is what I've learnt. All weld through primers although zinc rich, which is good for anti-corrosion, have really poor adhesion to the base metal. Also, they are a 1K product, as are nearly all etch primers, which I also do not rate at all and have had tons of trouble with in the early days. The problem with any 1K product is that the solvents in anything you put on top of it just dissolve it (Trev of Trev's blog has a good video on this subject). So my rule is, bare metal, then 2K epoxy primer, then 2K high build primer, basecoat, clearcoat. I don't use a 1K aerosol primer for any rub-throughs either as I have had that react with basecoat. This is because solvent basecoat is 50% thinners. The HB Body 989 can be thinned at 50%, so you can spray a fine thin coat onto any exposed bare metal. Also, buying the recommended thinners for the 989 is a good move as it is a different chemical composition to normal 2K thinners and is less aggressive.
Thanks Bob
You've either 3d printed a nifty phone holder for your head, or you've made one out of 6mm plate. I've caught up to you at last. (Binger) Just spectacular. Hat's off.
Ha, thanks Stanley, the gopro is actually on a proper holder 🤣
Watching from NZ Dave , fantastic as per usual ,pace yourself it will take you a while to come good properly ,looking forward to seeing the grin on your face on its maiden voyage
Thanks, me too 😊😊
You have done well Dave it looks good 😊
Thanks 👍
Great video as always Dave. With regards to sound deadening I bought Kilmat, it’s much cheaper than Dynomat. Keep up the great work 👍
Looks brilliant Dave it’s really nice , I particularly like that creamy off white colour think it will look beautiful ! Bummer about the contamination but at least it was in the boot not on the roof and easy sorted 👌
Thanks 👍
Another great video mate keep them coming 👍 and it's really good to see that you're on the mend...Mike skegness...
Thanks 👍
Hi Dave
I had the same issue with spraying epoxy over Halford weld through primer and Halfords HB primer , after a week or 2 the epoxy cracking, just make sure you sand off all Halford primers back to bare metal, before putting epoxy on, I've learnt my lesson, keep up the good work, have watched you from day one 👍
Thanks Mark
That looks superb. Sorry you had to redo part of it. 2 step forward and one back is still 1 step forward. You are currently thousands of steps forward, on this massive journey (that I don't want ever to end)!
Thanks Neil 😊😊
Can't give you the scientific reasons behind it, but I have learned over the years to stick either to 1k or 2k from start to finish. I never combine both, and touch wood, haven't had a problem since. I know it's a pain having to clean out the spray gun every time etc, instead of just using a rattle can, but works out quicker and better in the end as there is nothing worse than having to do anything twice IMHO.
Tony.
Agreed
hey dave, dodo mat is excellent stuff, I have used it and the results are quite amazing. Its also fairly thin . quite expensive but worth it 👍
Thanks, it's always good to get a positive comment about a product.
Great job Dave dodo Matt is good stuff worked well in my van. Coming along nicely
Thanks Mick, a few have said the same, good to know.
One word young Dave .........Tidy 😂
Tidy 😊
Dodo matt is great stuff Dave. I've been here from the start of the escort, great to see it at this stage, well all were but I'm sure you get me. 👍
Good to hear DoDo Mat is a good product 👌
Nice job Dave, one things for sure with paintwork if it can go wrong or react it will do. Turned out good in the end.
There's a law like that 🤣
Colouring in so very satisfying.
Sound job mate : i look forward too ya vidioes , we dun a mk1 yrs ago , cant wait too see yours on the road
Thanks Derek
Looking fantastic now
I’ve used dodo Matt for years it’s fantastic stuff well worth the money ,dynomatt is like power flex is too strong flex just more expensive because of name
Thanks Mark, a few have given similar positive comments about the Dodo Mat, I'll definitely get some. Comforting to hear.
Have you noticed the new halfords weld through primer Is not so good Seems to scratch off easily Doing a grand job Dave
That's a shame, why ruin a good thing 🤷🏻
Hi Dave, I only use the weld throug primer on the seams as I'm welding panels together, it does have a high zinc content but it rubs off easy, it comes of with wax & grease remover, you can go direct to metal with the expoxy, just leave it a few days to gas off then make sure you sand it. Is all the paint your shooting 1k? You can get fry ups simply because of all the solvent we've all been there. I wonder if the expoxy hadn't set enough before you hit it with the following coats of paint and went right throug to the primer. Still you recovered it without to much drama, looking good. Cheers Marty
Hi Marty, yep lesson learnt the hard way... I'll be sticking to 2k for the outer paint job.
@@DavesGarageuk we only learn from our mistakes, I've made plenty and still make them now, just be careful with the 2k it's nasty stuff, I am just uploading a video on you tube now of start to finish on painting the roof on a mini all in 2k apart from the base coat. Keep up the good work Cheers Marty's projects 👍
Cool job once again, have you got the manta still,is that your next on the list ?
Hi Richard, Yes, I still have the Manta, it needs a lot more work than I was led to believe, so I'll be doing that once the Escort is out of the garage 😀
Shame you had to redo,Dave. Worked out in the end.
Nice job Dave but why did you paint the boot latch after you had already nickel plated it?
Got a bit carried away 🤣
Unusual was there oil residue on the panel you made for the bootfloor
@@DavesGarageuk Ah, it happens, I guess you can remove and clean the paint off it if you want to.
@@StephenParkes-e9y must have been
me and my mate had a p reg escort mk1 back in 1986ish and this scum bag burt it out. so we used the key what was left of the escort and took his mk4 cortian crushed it in my mates scrap yeard and put it back on his drive way the next night as a block there was a bit more to this but ill not say
Car thieves are the lowest of humanity, I once had an immaculate Manta GTE Coupe that got stolen of my drive, gutted.
