Kimimaro was one of the strongest characters in the first Naruto series, he could've been an Akatsuki, to be honest, but he had a disease. But imagine Lee held up the fight really well and when Gaara came, it was just beautiful.
I think as he is here he would have been a fairly weak akatsuki member, but he was also only 15. Plus Orochimaru did originally pick Kimimaru as his vessel before his illness got in the way. It’s a shame we didn’t get more of Kimimaru really.

I know people mostly watch the show for the action. But part of the point of the show/manga is people achieving their dreams. Rock Lee's dream was to become a splendid ninja. He overcame his shortcomings and he proved that he was a splendid ninja despite his lack of Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. Unfortunately, we never saw him defeat Neji. So, in my opinion, Rock Lee's story is over. Yeah, they could have given him a new goal to strive for. But there had to be room for every character to accomplish their dreams. I know people wanted to see more from him, but I see Rock Lee's story as being finished.
This is has to be one of the most well written boss battles in the first season. I still cannot forget when I had goosebumbs seeing tailed-beast Kimimaro escape the Sand Tsunami of Gaara. That was badass.
