What he did to madara really puts guy up there in the top 5. Also, there’s no way in hell itachi is battling jaraiya and 7 gates guy and coming out alive. No chance. The thing that people underestimate about Itachi fights/encounters, isn't just his power, (it's mainly writters or Kishimoto's fault for making Itachi seem or to look very powerful throughout the series) but how smart and intelligent he is during various situations, he never, ever underestimates his opponents because of his composure and his way of being, the level of thinking he's on honestly dwars most people in the series, with only people like Minato and Shikaku comparable with him. More precisly, Itachi isn't just any ordinary Shinobi also, he pretty much knows and he's also aware that all strong opponents have weaknesses (including himself), and he specializes in finding those "weaknesses" and exploiting them ("*Even the strongest of opponents always has a weakness*" - Uchiha Itachi) because he's that type of character who can exced almost any expectations. Itachi is very unique and authentic, especially in the factor of facing various encounters approach, his unpredictability in his way of fighting style approach it's his key factor in all of his encounters. Being blind or nearly blind has never slowed him down (especially when he's pretty much serious, but that's the point, he has never go all out against anyone during the series.) Itachi it's that type of character who can exced almost any expectations. (at least that's what we were shown in the anime by the creator Masashi Kishimoto). I would say its fast because Kabuto coudldn't even react to it, and its not like Nagato was completely immobile to the point that he couldn't sidestep the blade. Being controlled by someone thousands of miles away didn't stop the Third Raikage from dodging KCM Naruto's Rasenshuriken. And as for Orochimaru, the sword struck him in between syllables of a word during his speech. I think that that is pretty fast. You could throw an Amaterasu covered Bijuu bomb at Itachi and the Yata mirror will negate it, making it so the Susanoo doesn't even need to take a blow. You could punch the Yata mirror and the force will completely be negated. His biggest strength of all: tactical intelligence - Itachi always outsmarts and plans for everything because the plot demands it. You're physically strong? Itachi is already 2 steps ahead of you knowing exactly what to do. You're extremely fast? Again, 2 steps. You're going to try and outlast Itachi in a fight? Good luck. To add to this, some of the 3 most powerful techniques in the verse are due to his intelligence and planning ability; Izanami, Izanagi, and Kotoamatsukami. Izanami - A forbbiden genjutsu technique that allows you to alter someone's destiny. Even someone like Bee, a perfect Jinchuriki, can't escape Izanami unless he does what Itachi wants him to. Izanagi - You somehow gained an advantage over Itachi? A genjutsu so powerful that the person it's cast on doesn't even know they're under a genjutsu. Like the Tsukuyomi, completely OP. To add to all of this, Itachi is pretty good at hand to hand combat(his Taijutsu it's exceptional and underrated) is great with shuriken, is extremely fast, is great with regular fire techniques, is slippery and unpredictable, and has the extremely dangerous and fast Genjutsu style of fighting approach that can caught you off guard almost at any time. With all of these things considered you've got one dangerous ninja. Lastly but not least Kishimoto made sure that Itachi was seen as someone special and he did an incredible job in establishing that in the story. When Itachi Uchiha awakened his Susano'o, he was seen wielding legendary weapons of the Totsuka Blade and the Yata Mirror. The former allowed Itachi to seal anyone he pierced in a world of genjutsu forever, while the latter gave him the ability to deflect any and all attacks thrown towards him, regardless of whether they were physical or spiritual in nature. According to Zetsu (who was around since the period of Kaguya time era until the present of Naruto) he state it in the anime and also in the manga that these weapons, when combined with his Susano'o, made Itachi Invincible. This is why Kishimoto basically had to give him a handicap: Naruto AIDS. 🤷🏻♂️ ☯️

People keep saying how Kurenai used Genjutsu on Itachi as a joke. 1) back then, the information on Uchiha clan is not that widely known, even between Konoha’s shinobi, as well as to us, the readers. So no wonder she tried to use genjutsu, which is her strongest move. 2) Kurenai is a rookie Jonin. During the chunin exam arc, it was mentioned that she is new here and she didn’t even know about the proctor (i forgot the name of that man, the guy with a scar on his face). Asuma even had to explain about that proctor and how strict his examination methods were. So I’m sure Kurenai didn’t have much of the high level intel, maybe including the intel on Uchiha clan 3) she is a great genjutsu user. Although it is not much shown in manga, we can see how she could use her genjutsu in the filler episodes. She easily put a lot of the jonin level shinobi under her jutsu easily. So, all in all, that’s all she could do to oppose Itachi and she tried her best.
I see what you mean for the last two reasonings, but reason 1 is false. The Uchiha was one of the founding clans, and there have been an Uchiha that was close to each Hokage. To not have extensive knowledge on a group of people who's been there since the beginning is asinine, and considering that they have large libraries in the village, and research lobbies, I would believe that she wasn't a reader. Even then every clan in the village was known for their prowess in something and what it can do.
Itachi is the coolest anime character when it comes to battle. He's always calm like he's not struggle and like always had a plan in every move. He's not only strong, he's smart too when it comes to fight.
Itachi's genjutsu was stronger than kakashi's so this may not be the right answer but Gai practiced to counter Genjutsu by not looking at Kakashi's eyes and only in their body movements
After Guy loudly explained his Strategy against Sharingan itachi used the 2 Years + a few Months timegap between naruto and shippuden to develop Genjutsu that can be activated by his fingers alone... Guy left a Mighty impression on Itachi ;D

I think you forgot how trash Guy was when this happened. Part of the reason why Guy admired Kakashi was because there are students who pick up things quickly and then they’re students who show their stride as they become teenagers or mature more. Guy needed someone there to show a specific level of advancement which eventually led to Guy becoming one of the most dangerous shinobis in the history of the show. This guy fought Madara in case you forgot bro. Itachi new guy was quick as fuck. More than likely his genjutsu would be ineffective against Guy because of Guys speed.

i heard from some source that he was supposed to be Madara 2.0 which is more lethal, more smart and calculated not to mention he was a prodigy even the Kage admit it. by the look of it he can bring the 3rd Ninja war alone because he suffered from ptsd of war when he is still a child. very good villain story but sadly Kishi change him into a Batman of Konoha
despite naruto being such a dragged out series, the atmosphere, characters and story are still one of the best in all anime. not many anime manage to convey how bad ass characters are as good as naruto does.
The Pain arc is where the series should have ended, the 4th War dragged everything out and cheapened the power system. Kishi failed to world build so we could see all the characters and stories of the 5 nations within the Akatsuki saga.

When itachi and kisame were assigned by pain to seize kyubi, itachi managed to trick and influence kisame to run away and not catch naruto because itachi was still a spy from konoha and also protected naruto from being caught and itachi also gave a message to jiraya through a woman who had been exposed to itachi's genjutsu in order to come to the location to protect naruto, imagine if kisame rages in the village of konoha without itachi then the village of konoha will be drowned there will be many victims of shinobi konoha and naruto can easily be caught by kisame because kyubi chakra does not move in front of the samehada sword, that's the greatness of itachi who managed to trick kisame into obeyed without genjutsu and also managed to deceive Pain as the leader of Akatsuki who was not suspicious of Itachi who failed to catch Kyubi, only Obito realized that Itachi was a spy from Konoha but Obito himself was afraid to fight Itachi, while Gai thought that Sharingga's genjutsu could be avoided by not looking. sharinggan eyes offline directly even though the genjutsu property can be done through his fingers as was done with naruto, itachi can easily defeat gai with his genjutsu but itachi to konoha not to fight

Lol no. Kakashi was not aware of the full ability of the sharingan ie mangekyo sharingan, because all the Uchihas died and the knowledge was lost. So Itachi showed him there's more to the sharingan, causing kakashi to realize he has mangekyo sharingan too.

The thing that people underestimate about Itachi fights/encounters, isn't just his power, (it's mainly writters or Kishimoto's fault for making Itachi seem or to look very powerful throughout the series) but how smart and intelligent he is during various situations, he never, ever underestimates his opponents because of his composure and his way of being, the level of thinking he's on honestly dwars most people in the series, with only people like Minato and Shikaku comparable with him. More precisly, Itachi isn't just any ordinary Shinobi also, he pretty much knows and he's also aware that all strong opponents have weaknesses (including himself), and he specializes in finding those "weaknesses" and exploiting them ("*Even the strongest of opponents always has a weakness*" - Uchiha Itachi) because he's that type of character who can exced almost any expectations. Itachi is very unique and authentic, especially in the factor of facing various encounters approach, his unpredictability in his way of fighting style approach it's his key factor in all of his encounters. Being blind or nearly blind has never slowed him down (especially when he's pretty much serious, but that's the point, he has never go all out against anyone during the series.) Itachi it's that type of character who can exced almost any expectations. (at least that's what we were shown in the anime by the creator Masashi Kishimoto). Moral of the story, never underestimate Itachi. He did more sick than most healthy ninjas do in their entire life. In my opinion No One should underestimate such an unpredictable Shinobi like Itachi, even Madara (I won't say that Itachi can beat him, but at least he will be pretty much able to put a decent fight that Madara will also be impressed in my opinion). Also how can some of you guys even consider that Totsuka Blade it's slow when no such speed feat has been shown through the Shippuden that state it that it is slow? All of you are assuming it to be slow it may not be the case... Its not that the sword is unavoidable but it clearly has a very long range and is a very long blade. If you look at the manga, Naruto, Bee and Itachi are all relatively small from Nagato's point of view, and you can see the Totsuka Blade extending all the way from Itachi, piercing through Nagato, and still managing to nearly pop out toward the reader out of the page. I would say its fast because Kabuto coudldn't even react to it, and its not like Nagato was completely immobile to the point that he couldn't sidestep the blade. Also, Kabuto controlling people from far away is never stated to inhibit the Edos' reaction speed in any way. Being controlled by someone thousands of miles away didn't stop the Third Raikage from dodging KCM Naruto's Rasenshuriken. And as for Orochimaru, the sword struck him in between syllables of a word during his speech. I think that that is pretty fast. Pair the Totuska Blade with a good feint and its lethal because its ethereal, meaning it can pierce through any object. If the sword didn't live up to its reputation then Orochimaru wouldn't seek it out. People need to stop downplaying Itachi and denying the very clear speed feats of Totsuka. There is no room for interpretations here. The advantage of being an Uchiha, especially for Itachi and Madara, is that during an encounter against them, they always have a counter because of their unpredictable way of fighting factor, they don't run out of options or techniques, they almost always have a counter in their arsenal, even forbidden jutsus seems irrellevant against them, only a few Uchihas know a certain way to approach the situation with a certain and effective technique, that's why is hard/difficult to fight against them in my opinion. ☯️ 🤷🏻♂️ Here are the things that make Itachi so formidable. Tsukuyomi - A genjutsu so powerful that you literally can't escape it unless you have the same blood as Itachi, as stated by Itachi himself and proven later by Sasuke, or you're a jinchuriki. Jinchuriki are supposed to be immune to genjutsu but it hasn't been proven, but when Bee was fighting Edo Nagato and Itachi with Naruto, he said to watch out for Tsukuyomi explicitly. Literally 99% of all opponents fighting Itachi have no way of stopping Tsukuyomi. You could have the power to split the planet in half and it wouldn't matter. (Want to know why? - Kakashi pretty much state it in the actual anime and manga that Tsukuyomi it's such a dangerous Genjutsu Technique because it happen in a instant, even if you realize that you are trapped in the Tsukuyomi, it will be too late, because Itachi could approach you during that time in the real world (or he can use an Explosive Clone to approach you without you even realizing it in time and he can pretty much finish you before you can even realize, - 72 hours in Tsukuyomi realm means 1 second or a couple of seconds in the real world. Tsukuyomi can't be broken, when used to it's fullest.) The Sword of Totsuka and Yata Mirror - The Susanoo itself is a near invincible defense but these two weapons take it to the next step. The Sword of Totsuka can seal "anything" if it even touches it. It's completely OP. It's hard to fight a guy that can seal you away if his sword even touches you. The Yata Mirror is even a bigger deal in my opinion. It doesn't block attacks, it's "negates" them. You could throw an Amaterasu covered Bijuu bomb at Itachi and the Yata mirror will negate it, making it so the Susanoo doesn't even need to take a blow. You could punch the Yata mirror and the force will completely be negated. His biggest strength of all: tactical intelligence - Itachi always outsmarts and plans for everything because the plot demands it. You're physically strong? Itachi is already 2 steps ahead of you knowing exactly what to do. You're extremely fast? Again, 2 steps. You're going to try and outlast Itachi in a fight? Good luck. To add to this, some of the 3 most powerful techniques in the verse are due to his intelligence and planning ability; Izanami, Izanagi, and Kotoamatsukami. Izanami - A forbbiden genjutsu technique that allows you to alter someone's destiny. Impossible to break out of even if you know you're in a genjutsu without complying with the users set destiny for you. Even someone like Bee, a perfect Jinchuriki, can't escape Izanami unless he does what Itachi wants him to. Izanagi - You somehow gained an advantage over Itachi? He makes it so that advantage never happened. Kotoamatsukami - Though Shisui's technique, Itachi has his eye which effectively makes it his weapon. A genjutsu so powerful that the person it's cast on doesn't even know they're under a genjutsu. Like the Tsukuyomi, completely OP. To add to all of this, Itachi is pretty good at hand to hand combat(his Taijutsu it's exceptional and underrated) is great with shuriken, is extremely fast, is great with regular fire techniques, is slippery and unpredictable, and has the extremely dangerous and fast Genjutsu style of fighting approach that can caught you off guard almost at any time. With all of these things considered you've got one dangerous ninja. Lastly but not least Kishimoto made sure that Itachi was seen as someone special and he did an incredible job in establishing that in the story. When Itachi Uchiha awakened his Susano'o, he was seen wielding legendary weapons of the Totsuka Blade and the Yata Mirror. The former allowed Itachi to seal anyone he pierced in a world of genjutsu forever, while the latter gave him the ability to deflect any and all attacks thrown towards him, regardless of whether they were physical or spiritual in nature. According to Zetsu (who was around since the period of Kaguya time era until the present of Naruto) he state it in the anime and also in the manga that these weapons, when combined with his Susano'o, made Itachi Invincible. This is why Kishimoto basically had to give him a handicap: Naruto AIDS. 🤷🏻♂️ ☯️

1) back then, the information on Uchiha clan is not that widely known, even between Konoha’s shinobi, as well as to us, the readers. So no wonder she tried to use genjutsu, which is her strongest move.
2) Kurenai is a rookie Jonin. During the chunin exam arc, it was mentioned that she is new here and she didn’t even know about the proctor (i forgot the name of that man, the guy with a scar on his face). Asuma even had to explain about that proctor and how strict his examination methods were. So I’m sure Kurenai didn’t have much of the high level intel, maybe including the intel on Uchiha clan
3) she is a great genjutsu user. Although it is not much shown in manga, we can see how she could use her genjutsu in the filler episodes. She easily put a lot of the jonin level shinobi under her jutsu easily.
So, all in all, that’s all she could do to oppose Itachi and she tried her best.

I see what you mean for the last two reasonings, but reason 1 is false. The Uchiha was one of the founding clans, and there have been an Uchiha that was close to each Hokage. To not have extensive knowledge on a group of people who's been there since the beginning is asinine, and considering that they have large libraries in the village, and research lobbies, I would believe that she wasn't a reader. Even then every clan in the village was known for their prowess in something and what it can do.

I think you forgot how trash Guy was when this happened. Part of the reason why Guy admired Kakashi was because there are students who pick up things quickly and then they’re students who show their stride as they become teenagers or mature more. Guy needed someone there to show a specific level of advancement which eventually led to Guy becoming one of the most dangerous shinobis in the history of the show. This guy fought Madara in case you forgot bro. Itachi new guy was quick as fuck. More than likely his genjutsu would be ineffective against Guy because of Guys speed.

The Pain arc is where the series should have ended, the 4th War dragged everything out and cheapened the power system. Kishi failed to world build so we could see all the characters and stories of the 5 nations within the Akatsuki saga.

When itachi and kisame were assigned by pain to seize kyubi, itachi managed to trick and influence kisame to run away and not catch naruto because itachi was still a spy from konoha and also protected naruto from being caught and itachi also gave a message to jiraya through a woman who had been exposed to itachi's genjutsu in order to come to the location to protect naruto, imagine if kisame rages in the village of konoha without itachi then the village of konoha will be drowned there will be many victims of shinobi konoha and naruto can easily be caught by kisame because kyubi chakra does not move in front of the samehada sword, that's the greatness of itachi who managed to trick kisame into obeyed without genjutsu and also managed to deceive Pain as the leader of Akatsuki who was not suspicious of Itachi who failed to catch Kyubi, only Obito realized that Itachi was a spy from Konoha but Obito himself was afraid to fight Itachi, while Gai thought that Sharingga's genjutsu could be avoided by not looking. sharinggan eyes offline directly even though the genjutsu property can be done through his fingers as was done with naruto, itachi can easily defeat gai with his genjutsu but itachi to konoha not to fight

Lol no. Kakashi was not aware of the full ability of the sharingan ie mangekyo sharingan, because all the Uchihas died and the knowledge was lost.
