CAPTAIN BEYOND AT ACE'S LIVE MUSIC

  • The music of CAPTAIN BEYOND is amazing, but reproducing it in a LIVE environment is not easy. The first album, in particular, is so layered that if you try to perform it with one or even two guitarists, the audience, the FANS will notice.
Bobby Caldwell, knows this....it is HIS music after all.
When deciding to "put the band together" that he would take out on the road, and perhaps into the studio, he wanted quality musicians, and three guitars.....
He knew a couple as they were part of an earlier incarnation of the band, but he wanted, and he found several more...
and so in June of 2017, Bobby Caldwell brought CAPTAIN BEYOND to the small stage of ACE'S LIVE MUSIC, in Bradenton, Florida as the first date in their 2017 Tour....
The venue was packed, the crowd alive with anticipation, I had asked for and was given permission to film the show. This was a dream project of mine and even though I was a little light on equipment I vowed to do the best capture I could.
I shot with five cameras, four were locked off shots with me the only hand held camera.
Audio could've become a problem as I couldn't get a 'board feed', but the audio guy was very helpful and he was up on the raised balcony at the back of the room and showed me a neat place to mount my digital recorder and the two condenser mics on the recorder got a good overall mix from the live room, and the drums were helped by mixing in some of the mics from the drum cam....yes...Bobby has a camera devoted to him and almost every drum fill is a cut to Bobby.
This was the first performance of this new group of musicians. The music is tough, the pressure was real.....I LOVED IT....it wasn't perfect....it was LIVE!
I was RIGHT IN FRONT......I had the BEST seat in the house.....I was almost on the stage....the venue ACE'S has since closed, this is a tough business....as time passes I ask myself will there be any more?
Nobody knows....but this......we'll ALWAYS have THIS!
Please enjoy CAPTAIN BEYOND at ACE'S LIVE Music

Armageddon is a similar sound from their only 1975 A & M release. It fits in good with the Captain Beyond family tree. I've had the vinyl of Armageddon since 1975. And my big wish was always Rod Evans would appear and do a tour with Captain Beyond.

Your comment was humbling as not many recognize the effort that I poured into this project. As a fan I was in heaven having such access to my favorite band on their new tour with mostly new personnel.
This entire project was a labor of love and done with a zero budget.
Now, nothing gets done for free, but the expenses for travel and time spent editing were given by me to assure that others got to see our favorite band and hopefully in a favorable light.
Thank you for the generous and insightful comment....

Unbelievable talent! Bobby's drumming ability is imo most fantastic of this genre and a few others. The Allman Bros. , Johnny Winters, Armageddon and Captain Beyond reaped the rewards of this mans talent and musical dedication. Appreciating his music and drumming skills for 50 years and just had to pay respect to the man on the drums. Thank You Bobby Caldwell!

The music took THREE guitarists to replicate the sound on the record. Bobby did a wonderful job finding three extremely excellent musicians to do that..... I am not a member of the band, I'm a fan like you, but also a friend of Bobby's and he was gracious enough to allow me to come and film the Band on their first live gig for this new group of players.
It was a LIVE performance their first since coming together. Was it perfect? It was LIVE and those are usually subject to many of the things that make a live concert unique, but the enthusiasm and dedication to this wonderful music is evident throughout. Look at their faces, these guys are having FUN.
I have been a fan of this band and this music since the 1970s and I was RIGHT THERE....up close and in front shooting this concert. I then took dozens of hours editing it.....totally immersed in this show....WOW!
I'm glad you enjoyed it..... this film, much like the performance is not as perfect as I would have liked, there was no budget, I was the ONLY person on my crew, but it's better than a phone video, and it may be the last time we see this Band in all their glory....thanks for watching....

Caldwell still as dramatic and fusion oriented as Michael Walden - and as he did way back with Johnny Winter, he adds backbeat, lightning snare rolls (Sandy McKee & Gaylord Birch had similar) and he doesn't put fills & accents at obvious ends of measure, Eg under turnarounds, where the listener needs to hear the melody resolve in the guitar keys horns or voice

Awesome reunion of old Captain Beyond with Bobby the only real member from the old days but he sure took stock of finding these guys that can play the old & new material & still make it look east when it was never that. How Rhino managed to do what he did live was mind bending & it's easy to see why there's 3 guitarists of quality to do what Rhino did by himself on record & Live. Growing up in the 60s & 70s it was sad we here in MD. didn't hear Captain beyond on the airwaves but the names of the band were known to all us hippie musicians & when the first LP came out it was a no brainer it was going to be special & one spin on the ole turntable & we were totally hooked . Same for Armageddon & they would have soared to the top had it not been for the dreadful accident that took Keith Relfs life & finished the band. Only one album but it was still the same powerhouse as the first CB album. Those that knew of Steamhammer & Martin Pugh & Louis C. knew that Armageddon was going to be as awesome as Captain Beyond & that they were. Great days of 70s Rock as it was meant to be. Thank you Bobby for so many great memories of the times with Johnny Winter , The Allmans , Captain B. & Armageddon & still playing the living daylights out of this music & those drums. made the 70s ROCK like hell !!!!!

Thanks for the video. I've always loved Captain Beyond, since I first heard the first album. Have played Armworth/Myopic Void with a band. I personally think three guitarists can get a bit messy. I feel that, with two guitarists, a band could adequately reproduce their music. Maybe some keys on certain tunes. But they did it live at Montreux with just Rhino! Just my two cents worth.

It WAS an extraordinary experience. This has been one of my favorite albums and Bands since I first heard it, and when I had the opportunity to actually FILM the band playing this great music with these fantastic musicians I found myself in FAN HEAVEN....but that's only part of it....THEN I had to take all the footage I captured and EDIT it....so I got to sort of LIVE with that music for dozens of hours while I edited the footage....it was one of the high points of my creative life.....

that guitar player is so wicked well the whole band is wicked why is it that the more talented you are the less you make and lesser venues i guess set the controls for the heart of the sun

Thank you so much for sharing this!
As an additional thank you and since I'm a dedicated fan, I added a set-list with timelinks to each individual song in the comments here. Also the names of the band members.
(You can copy it and add it to the video description if you want)
Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time, and probably one of the most underrated bands of all time (along with 'Camel')
Bobby is a true legend, and has been such an inspiration for me as a drummer.
I got turned on to them by my father, he used to blast them all the time when I was a kid in the mid 80's.
I wish he was still around so I could show him this amazing video. Good job on the video, man.
Greetings from Norway, and keep on dancing madly backwards!
(There was a couple of tunes I didnt recognize, if somebody knows what they are called!?)

Close to hour after supposed starting time, guy came onstage and said" due to contract issues, Capt Beyond will NOT be playing tonight, but please stick around and give the warmup band a nice welcome, here on thier first tour, promoting thier first album, give a loud welcome to ZZTOP" lol,,,,ok, ill stick around.. Been a fan of ZZ top ever since.

This is worth watching, but it's almost more like a cover band, since Calwell is the only original member. I most missed Rod Evans. At least that amazing music still lives on.

There first 2 records dedicated to Duane Allman and Berry Oakley are 2 of the finest recordings ever.. Remember the drummer and Lead singer wrote this album. The drummer is the man..

So do I..... there was NO budget for this shoot, I did it by invitation of B.C. but had to make do with what I had on hand, alone, the audio guy on site had a mixing board so old it had NO mixer out jacks, I was forced to use a small digital recorder with a stereo condenser mic. The ONLY saving grace was that the house mixer was up on a balcony and the house audio guy had a piece of wood that jutted out over the audience pointed at the stage where I attached the recorder giving me the same audio environment that the house heard. Then in post I EQ'd the hell out of it as best I could, but yeah, I would've preferred a friendlier audio recording, all I can say is this was better than a phone recording, and let's appreciate what we got, it may NEVER happen again.....
