Albus Perkamentus indeed means Albus Parchmentus. Just because of parchment. 2. Gladianus Smalhart is a play on the word Gladjanus/Glad-janus. Janus is a name, could be shortened to 'Jan', so it basically means; 'Slippery/Smooth Jan.' Someone that gets away with bad stuff. You'd call someone a gladjanus if they managed to distract you on purpose and then steal the last Mars-bar. Smal = narrow and hart = hart. 3. Marcel (Lubbermans) is just a English-sounding name (but not English enough to be 'Neville') and Lubbermans has the words Lubber and mans. Lubberen is a verb that means, to sway freely in a very unflattering way. If you take a dress size XS and you put it on a rhino and then back on the lady, the fabric will be 'lubber-ing.' I loved this video. As a child, I used to know all the names in Dutch and English because with the Dutch names you couldn't find anything about it on the internet. But with the new movies it does feels a bit weird sometimes to see the names so different but others are just the original names even in the subs. I guess it is a bit of a 90's thing because nowadays names in books don't get changed for the most time. So, for example, the Hunger games have all the original names in the translated Dutch books.
That is actually not true (about the Hunger Games). "Glimmer" became "Glinster", "cornucopia" became "Hoorn des overvloeds" and other little things similar to these translations. I love how Dutch translates the words to make sense when you compare the name to the function or personality of the person or thing. Newer YA novels don't get translated with such detail anymore, which a lot of can be derived back to the very quick pase in which the translating and editing to make sense in Dutch has to be done. Currently, there is quite a lot of pressure on translators because English YA novels is the genre that is being sold the most nowadays, so the publishers exude a lot of pressure to get things done fast, (the Dutch youth is no longer interested in Dutch literature for the most part, which in my opinion is a shame since I am a Dutch youth that does still have an interest for Dutch literature) leaving little room for the fun translations we see in book series such as "Harry Potter".
@@minkevanderheide2572 for me the reason why I'm more interested in English YA books is because there's simply more options, I like science-fiction and fantasy books, but it's harder to find good sci-fi and fantasy books in Dutch than it is to find them in English
It's also because the names and terms in the HP books had so many double meanings and puns . The translator really did a good job. In other languages like German or Swedish they left far more names and terms untranslated or with a small twist.

It depends on which franchise it is and in what kind of universe it takes place. In case of the Harry Potter books, it works well most of the time, allthough names like Perkamentus as the Dutch name for Dumbledore is one of few that annoy me a bit, because it doesn't feel like it makes sense to me at all. Yes, he reads a lot and has much knowledge from books, but he is known way more for his skills and ideas. The names work well for that world and because it is a typical youngsters franchise. But it doesn't always work well, particularly if the franchise is not only or not at all aimed at children, like the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. If a name in that franchise in Dutch is only one word, like Gollum, it is not changed (Legolas) or only in spelling (Gollem). But significant changes have been made for names in the form of multiple words, which just don't work for me that well at all (for example, Samwise Gangee is Sam Gewissies in Dutch). If possible, they've only changed last names most of the time (Frodo and Bilbo Baggins' last name is Balings in Dutch). The translations may make sense, but don't sound as exciting as the English names if it all takes place in that kind of world and if it has a different group of people to aim for. Both franchises' movies I will always watch in English (Lord of the Rings and Hobbit is only subtitled in Dutch), because it sounds much better that way. But I think that my reasoning about the difference in bookseries also makes my point about the movies. Harry Potter will work for kids in Dutch audio quite well (some voices excepted) and Dutch subtitles have Dutch names when using English audio, which also works fine for kids or other Dutch speaking viewers to recognize the terms, things and characters from the books. But that is not the case with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. In their books, the Dutch names are not as pretty, but understandable, because you might feel that two languages are mixed up in a lot of sentences. However, in the theatrical versions of the movies, the Dutch names in the subtitles feel much worse than they do in the books. On the other hand, the subtitles in the extended versions of the same movies only have translations for places, things and terms, but not for persons (except for the nicknames), which is a huge improvement.

I love the Dutch translation a lot! The names of people and objects have so much meaning behind them, just like in the English version. I have read parts of the Spanish, French and Portugese translation and all of (or at least most of) the names were the same as in the original version.

Some of the Hungarian names if anyone's interested. Many things are unchanged or just written in a slightly different way to be easily pronounceable like Griffendél for Griffindor. Hogwarts - Roxfort Hogsmeade - Roxmorts Severus Snape - Perselus Piton (obviously means Python) Slughorn - Lumpsluck (doesn't even mean anything, just sounds super weird) Slytherin - Mardekár (it's a wordplay that means something like "Venomous bite, so bad") Ravenclaw - Hollóhát (it means Ravenback, which is weird, also Helena is Hedvig, like Harry's owl) Diagon Alley - Abszol Út (wordplay from "absolute" and "út" means street) Stupify - Stupor (you don't pronounce it with the English "S", but the way you say "shhh!", so it's like shhh-tupor) Expelliarmus - Capitulatus (form the word capitulate) Mad-Eye Moody - Rémszem Mordon (Rémszem means something like Monster-Eye or Horroristic-Eye) Tom Marvolo Riddle - Tom Rowle Denem (only changed to make the riddle work) Padfoot - Tapmancs (a combination of the two words "tappancs" and "mancs". They both mean paw, but "tappancs" is specifically the bottom part.) That's about all I think is interesting enough to worth mentioning. I might've left out one or two.
I forgot to mention that there was the horrible "Uranus" joke that was used twice in the books. It doesn't mean anything in Hungarian, and I was so glad that there are people who don't speak English, so they won't understand it.

The dutch name for the Whomping Willow is just perfect! Beukwilg. Beuk has two meanings in dutch, it's the dutch word for beech, but also a punch. Gruzielement (horcrux) is also a good example.

My favorite Dutch word for a Harry Potter thing is Gruzielement (horcrux). Gruzelement (without the i in the middle) is only used in a Dutch saying: Something falls into gruzelementen meaning something fell to pieces. But with the i in the middle, gruzielement, it gets a double meaning. Because the Dutch word "ziel" actually means "soul". So the name gruzielement in Dutch implies a soul having fallen to pieces. Which is exactly what a horcruc is.

I started reading Harry Potter in Dutch when only book 1-4 where published. So then I found out how long it took for the Dutch translation of book 5 I bought the English version... Only to be utterly confussed by the names. So then I got the English books 1-4 and book 5 made sense. Then read the Dutch translation... This continued till the end of the series. I get the names mixed up in my head though... For some I strugle to remember the English name and for others it's the Dutch name that eludes me....
What you should know is that translater admit he should not have changed the name of Luna Lovegood in Luna Leeflang. Translater did very good work exept with Luna. Malfidus also stil sound more dificult then Malfoy. Jk Rowling said that she like Dutch book covers a lot. I think there look the best too and inspecialy there are no spoilers on it that spoil you chacter fantasy. The 5th book cover i like the moost with hidden horses. It also was moost expensive novel with moost pages and best Potter followd by the 3th book. I like to see another video about some of other translations and what you think about the American translation of the title of first novel/movie. Steen Der Wijzen is Dutch title.
Vlaming hier. Ik wil even zeggen dat ik ooit een ervaring heb gezien op school waarbij het Engelse/Nederlandse vertaling probleem zich voordeed: Onze school had (en heeft nog steeds, alleen zit ik er niet meer) een connectie met een school in Afrika en tijdens lessen Engels en Frans deden we soms taken in verband met deze uitwisseling. Eén daarvan was iets met een kwis sturen naar die Afrikaanse studenten, in het Engels, en zij konden die dan in hun school doen. Een medeleerling van mij had vragen over Harry en Hermelien. Maar ik moest hem eraan herinneren dat Hermelien in het Engels 'Hermione' is en dat die studenten anders niet zouden weten over wie het gaat. Niet echt spectaculair, ik weet het, maar wel gelinkt aan het thema van deze video.
Ik vind de vernederlandse namen ook heel goed gevonden! In de boeken en films zit natuurlijk een hoop humor en een soortgelijke humor humor zit in al die namen met de vele "dubbele" bodems! Daar is goed over nagedacht. 😋

I loved this video. As a child, I used to know all the names in Dutch and English because with the Dutch names you couldn't find anything about it on the internet. But with the new movies it does feels a bit weird sometimes to see the names so different but others are just the original names even in the subs. I guess it is a bit of a 90's thing because nowadays names in books don't get changed for the most time. So, for example, the Hunger games have all the original names in the translated Dutch books.
That is actually not true (about the Hunger Games). "Glimmer" became "Glinster", "cornucopia" became "Hoorn des overvloeds" and other little things similar to these translations. I love how Dutch translates the words to make sense when you compare the name to the function or personality of the person or thing. Newer YA novels don't get translated with such detail anymore, which a lot of can be derived back to the very quick pase in which the translating and editing to make sense in Dutch has to be done. Currently, there is quite a lot of pressure on translators because English YA novels is the genre that is being sold the most nowadays, so the publishers exude a lot of pressure to get things done fast, (the Dutch youth is no longer interested in Dutch literature for the most part, which in my opinion is a shame since I am a Dutch youth that does still have an interest for Dutch literature) leaving little room for the fun translations we see in book series such as "Harry Potter".
@@minkevanderheide2572 for me the reason why I'm more interested in English YA books is because there's simply more options, I like science-fiction and fantasy books, but it's harder to find good sci-fi and fantasy books in Dutch than it is to find them in English
It's also because the names and terms in the HP books had so many double meanings and puns . The translator really did a good job. In other languages like German or Swedish they left far more names and terms untranslated or with a small twist.

Also, I never realized that the reason for this lack of translation is because of the pressure from the English genre. 😲
It depends on which franchise it is and in what kind of universe it takes place. In case of the Harry Potter books, it works well most of the time, allthough names like Perkamentus as the Dutch name for Dumbledore is one of few that annoy me a bit, because it doesn't feel like it makes sense to me at all. Yes, he reads a lot and has much knowledge from books, but he is known way more for his skills and ideas. The names work well for that world and because it is a typical youngsters franchise.
But it doesn't always work well, particularly if the franchise is not only or not at all aimed at children, like the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. If a name in that franchise in Dutch is only one word, like Gollum, it is not changed (Legolas) or only in spelling (Gollem). But significant changes have been made for names in the form of multiple words, which just don't work for me that well at all (for example, Samwise Gangee is Sam Gewissies in Dutch). If possible, they've only changed last names most of the time (Frodo and Bilbo Baggins' last name is Balings in Dutch). The translations may make sense, but don't sound as exciting as the English names if it all takes place in that kind of world and if it has a different group of people to aim for.
Both franchises' movies I will always watch in English (Lord of the Rings and Hobbit is only subtitled in Dutch), because it sounds much better that way. But I think that my reasoning about the difference in bookseries also makes my point about the movies. Harry Potter will work for kids in Dutch audio quite well (some voices excepted) and Dutch subtitles have Dutch names when using English audio, which also works fine for kids or other Dutch speaking viewers to recognize the terms, things and characters from the books. But that is not the case with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. In their books, the Dutch names are not as pretty, but understandable, because you might feel that two languages are mixed up in a lot of sentences. However, in the theatrical versions of the movies, the Dutch names in the subtitles feel much worse than they do in the books. On the other hand, the subtitles in the extended versions of the same movies only have translations for places, things and terms, but not for persons (except for the nicknames), which is a huge improvement.

I love the Dutch translation a lot! The names of people and objects have so much meaning behind them, just like in the English version. I have read parts of the Spanish, French and Portugese translation and all of (or at least most of) the names were the same as in the original version.

Some of the Hungarian names if anyone's interested. Many things are unchanged or just written in a slightly different way to be easily pronounceable like Griffendél for Griffindor.

Severus Snape - Perselus Piton (obviously means Python)
Slughorn - Lumpsluck (doesn't even mean anything, just sounds super weird)
Slytherin - Mardekár (it's a wordplay that means something like "Venomous bite, so bad")
Ravenclaw - Hollóhát (it means Ravenback, which is weird, also Helena is Hedvig, like Harry's owl)
Diagon Alley - Abszol Út (wordplay from "absolute" and "út" means street)
Stupify - Stupor (you don't pronounce it with the English "S", but the way you say "shhh!", so it's like shhh-tupor)
Expelliarmus - Capitulatus (form the word capitulate)
Mad-Eye Moody - Rémszem Mordon (Rémszem means something like Monster-Eye or Horroristic-Eye)
Tom Marvolo Riddle - Tom Rowle Denem (only changed to make the riddle work)
Padfoot - Tapmancs (a combination of the two words "tappancs" and "mancs". They both mean paw, but "tappancs" is specifically the bottom part.)
That's about all I think is interesting enough to worth mentioning. I might've left out one or two.
I forgot to mention that there was the horrible "Uranus" joke that was used twice in the books. It doesn't mean anything in Hungarian, and I was so glad that there are people who don't speak English, so they won't understand it.

The dutch name for the Whomping Willow is just perfect! Beukwilg. Beuk has two meanings in dutch, it's the dutch word for beech, but also a punch. Gruzielement (horcrux) is also a good example.

My favorite Dutch word for a Harry Potter thing is Gruzielement (horcrux). Gruzelement (without the i in the middle) is only used in a Dutch saying: Something falls into gruzelementen meaning something fell to pieces. But with the i in the middle, gruzielement, it gets a double meaning. Because the Dutch word "ziel" actually means "soul". So the name gruzielement in Dutch implies a soul having fallen to pieces. Which is exactly what a horcruc is.

I started reading Harry Potter in Dutch when only book 1-4 where published. So then I found out how long it took for the Dutch translation of book 5 I bought the English version... Only to be utterly confussed by the names. So then I got the English books 1-4 and book 5 made sense. Then read the Dutch translation... This continued till the end of the series. I get the names mixed up in my head though... For some I strugle to remember the English name and for others it's the Dutch name that eludes me....

What you should know is that translater admit he should not have changed the name of Luna Lovegood in Luna Leeflang.
Translater did very good work exept with Luna. Malfidus also stil sound more dificult then Malfoy.
Jk Rowling said that she like Dutch book covers a lot. I think there look the best too and inspecialy there are no spoilers on it that spoil you chacter fantasy. The 5th book cover i like the moost with hidden horses. It also was moost expensive novel with moost pages and best Potter followd by the 3th book.

Onze school had (en heeft nog steeds, alleen zit ik er niet meer) een connectie met een school in Afrika en tijdens lessen Engels en Frans deden we soms taken in verband met deze uitwisseling. Eén daarvan was iets met een kwis sturen naar die Afrikaanse studenten, in het Engels, en zij konden die dan in hun school doen. Een medeleerling van mij had vragen over Harry en Hermelien. Maar ik moest hem eraan herinneren dat Hermelien in het Engels 'Hermione' is en dat die studenten anders niet zouden weten over wie het gaat. Niet echt spectaculair, ik weet het, maar wel gelinkt aan het thema van deze video.
