- Welcome and thank you for joining and allowing me to be a part of your ASL Learning experience! My name is Melissa and I am a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). I have been a Sign Language Interpreter most of my life from childhood into the professional world, have been teaching and tutoring for over 20+years (high school and college levels) as well as heavily involved with the Deaf and ASL community.
As a CODA, ASL is my native language, I grew up with Deaf culture and in the Deaf world. Its who I am and wIth my life experience; I have witnessed moments where I seen the painful disconnect, lack of communication and relationships and wished more would know how to sign and to create more access with our Deaf individuals, just to make our world a better place.
My passion is to teach and share American Sign Language with individuals such as yourself! Especially, To all that have Deaf family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors or just want to learn this amazing, expressive, hands-on language! So congrats and thank you for taking your time to make your community a better place by doing so and I am honored you are joining me and allowing me to be a part of your ASL journey, So welcome!!!!
The purpose of these videos are to help you gain more ASL vocabulary, concepts, practice phrases and opportunity to emphasize on your "facial expressions"; which seems difficult for many ASL students and learners, along with encouraging your sign fluency.
So Lets begin this journey!
These videos are voice interpreted for those who are auditory learners and struggle with learning a non-verbal language and need some help understanding (receptive skills). Each video brings access to those with low-vision blindness for near sighted blindness.
For the TRUE ASL immersion experience, after watching it once with the sound on, I encourage you watch the video again and "MUTE" the sound, so you are gaining receptive skills too. If the sign is too fast for you, you can go to settings and hit the “speed” option to slow the video down.
When you completed the learning, go to the drop down box and review the vocabulary list, as well as the BONUS ASL sentences.
Best wishes, Good Luck and don't forget to show your support… Like, Subscribe, Hit the “bell” option, make a comment or share these videos with others that are interested to learn as well!

Great job on this video and the word list. Thank you
Thanks for the supoort!! I have 5 of these kinds of video-- you know those rare vocab signs! Best wishes……. 👋🏼👋🏼✊🏽
Hi Melissa!
I have been learning ASL for 2 years now and I just found your UA-cam Channel because I wanted to learn more Advanced ASL slang. I also found it helpful to watch your videos because they are 100% ASL, which makes me practice more. Thank you!
Airam, thank you for continuing to learn ASL! So happy to know these are helpful. If you want more like the ASL Slang ones.. check out the ASL Poetry and Song vocabulary and Mouth Morphemes videos, they are filled with more like this. If you have a signing buddy, share this with a friend so you can practice signing these with another person too.
Best wishes!!!!
@@melissacayton1111 thank you so much! I can't believe you answered me back
Just found you. Excellent video. Please keep going.
Thanks Jesse! Glad these are helpful! Check out the links in the description if you would like more. I have Deaf Slang parts 1-5, Mouth Morphemes Parts 1-5 and the vocabulary for the Poetry and Songs are advanced ASL signs as well. Best wishes!
I just graduated ASL 3, working on my interpreter degree. Let me say I shared your video link with my class! Thank you! Wish we could zoom lol
And we can! I’d love to be a part of your learning experience. And thank you for sharing with your ITP, so happy to hear that. These videos have the extra vocabulary that one doesn’t usually learn, but so crucial in the ASL/Deaf community.
I watch over and over to learn the conversational signs in between.
Hi there! Hoping these are helping you out making your receptive and expressive skills easier. Thanks for the comment! Best wishes!!
I have a new site to add to my list. It's not easy finding quality ASL videos. But not only do you actually know what you're doing 25 CL off forehead (duh) you're a CODA, but your signs are clear and easy to understand. As I'm sure you know not everyone is. A lot of sloppy/lazy signers out there.
So happy my page is bringing you some good stuff for you! Love the "25 CL off the forehead" bit. Great breakdown! Here's one for you.. You know "Orange Throat"? Like "oppps?" THAT. Haha. Got me cracking up over here. Thanks for sharing!
😊 Hi!👋
I'm deaf and interest👍
Great video!!! How have not run into you yet!?
Interesting. I'm hearing and I always thought these were just part of ASL. But then again I've signed my whole life so perhaps I didn't realize they were "slang". They were just something I done. There were maybe two or three that were new to me but otherwise I just thought they were part of ASL. Great video!
So true... As a CODA, I always thought they were just ASL until I became older realizing I struggled with what the English word was for it... then I realized.. "its a Deaf thing!". Always fun to teach and share. :)
Totally ready to start learning more than just cursory ASL, and already starting to absorb some of the inflections and shifts that fluent/native signers have. It's hard for me to believe that none of this was in my brain at the start of last fall, and that my first attempts at learning ASL was more like the flat-o sliding off my forehead and falling off, or even being flung over my shoulder and landing somewhere on the ground. Also no longer feel that I'm juggling all the words in my head to keep from forgetting them, and can now string signs together to say anything, and that every day exposure to sign is reinforcing what I've already learned. It's pretty amazing and I'm totally ready for the next step~~
Love that you are climbing high and quick with ASL! On my page, I have a "Deaf Culture" playlist. Watch some of those to help with "receptive" as well as Deaf culture awareness. I also have a playlist in the advance ASL called "Songs for Poems and Songs" here is the part 1 of 5 videos. These are all vocabulary that like these that are commonly used in the Deaf world too! ua-cam.com/video/TTK4UxE_qhM/v-deo.html Best of luck!
As an ASL Teacher I try to find a way to help my students associate the sign with an image. Many signs are iconic but not all so you have to be creative but it can help with recall. The last thing to develop in most students is usually the receptive skills. I've only had one student that his receptive skills developed just as quickly as his expressive which was amazing to see. Anyway, lots and lots of practice with different people so you can see the various signing styles and accents.
One more thing, when fingerspelling don't bounce your hand as I'm sure you've probably already been told in ASL 1, but also when reading fingerspelling don't read it letter by letter. This will trip you up every time as you'll miss one or get stuck on one letter then you've lost the rest of the word. Sound it out. Both as you are fingerspelling as well as when you are reading fingerspelling. Eventually it'll become automatic like when you read a written word, you see the word as a whole instead of letter by letter. I know I'm not her but I couldn't help myself. It's the teacher in me. 😊 But I think I've found a new site to show to friends who are wanting to learn but I'm not close by to help.
Do you have any videos to help with receptive skills or do you know of any good videos for developing receptive skills?
If you don't use it you can lose it. At least the receptive skills can decline. I've not been around the Deaf community in a long while due to COVID then moving to a new state. I need to redevelop my receptive skills.
Love your videos- Even though live with fiancée (deaf) most sign learned myself... One suggestion is to slow down. Since you CODA and sign is 1st language that connection hardwired in you. I am better at sign than reading sign. That my biggest challenge. Also I learn from speech class when people speak in public they tend to talk fast. Slowing down will help people learn better.
Thank you for showing the ASL Slang and I use your video for my ASL Social Group since I am Deaf and monitoring the Zoom chats! May I give you an advice about the three ASL Slang - stick-mind, mind-absorb, put thought in mind and put thought in back of mind? I noticed hearing students are confused and I tried to explained to the best I can. Perhaps it is better not to put three of them together? Just a suggestion. Good job and keep it up!
Thank you for the tip. ASL Slang in general can definitely become confusing since one would have to expand and elaborate on each translation, context. Glad you are sharing this cool stuff. It allows ASL students to become more aware of the ASL language, vs the English language. Best wishes to you and your future classes!
"So-good" at 10:00 looks very close to violence/hate, is it a compliment kinda like "wow they killed that" or "slay!!" or is that my English brain creating false equivalents? lol
I like the idea!!! Honestly, I think that could work! "ohhhh they killed it, or slay" yep! Totally fits. Nice translation!
Hi
Hello! Hope you are gaining new ASL signs and skills!
Music is distracting. Otherwise good video
Sorry about that! I know, it is was only so easy as to "how to make it engaging, fun and not distracting". The cool thing about this, is the best way to learn ASL is in a voices off space. If I may suggest, hit the mute button, its great not only for learning new signs and concepts but for your receptive skills. Cheers! :)
I just turn my sound all the way off so that is always an option I guess lol
I liked the video, but the music was LOUD and distracting!!
If you prefer a more immersion method, hitting the mute button gives you that opportunity. Many ASL learners are auditory learners, this helps them. Thank you for the comment and suggestion
@@melissacayton1111Thank you, I will try that. I'm sorry if I sounded rude. I didn't mean to.
@@parkerrose3590 I understand. You’re trying to learn the best way possible. ;) I have some learners who are learning that are legally blind so I had been cropping my videos up close, but- they got iPads so are now able to zoom in, and I no longer need to do so… work in progress. Trying to figure out on how to accommodate for all. I wish you the best of luck!! I’ll be adding more videos soon… take care.
@@melissacayton1111 Thank you! Looking forward to watching all your videos!
