@@nova-kiin I don't find that rude at all. 1) I would have had to be sent to a Special School back in the day 2) it would have been something my parents would have had to learn as well... It really wasn't their thing. I adapted to the environment around me... Leared to read lips however during the Pandemic lip-reading is difficult when others are wearing Mask. Texting and emails have become my new normal.

I'm HoH finally learning even tho I've been HoH since 9 But my mom and my aunt rely on lip reading (they are profound hearing) they don't feel the need for the language
The train one reminds me of a Mexican saying “se te fue el tren” that means something like “the train left without you” so it basically means you missed something too! I might start using that sign! Love u both
They both do the same. In one video they talk about eye contact being important in signing, which is interesting considering you’d think you’d want to look at their hands, but I assume it’s because our eyes have a wide enough view to see what’s being signed and the person’s eyes.

When a new word or phrase becomes adopted in the hearing world, like "alternative facts" or "Bootylicious," how does the use of new terms evolve in ASL? Is there a forum where the deaf community decides on a common way to sign the new word or phrase? Do things start with spelling it out before a sign evolves? The slang video was excellent and made me wonder about how new signs develop? Big fans of your channel!

I met a friend who’s deaf and we’ve been texting a lot but I want to communicate with him normally so he taught me some basic ASL and I found this channel and I love it!! it’s really helpful funny cute and taught me a lot for the last 2 years so thank u guys so much
Because school is online now I’m having trouble remembering a lot of signs which sucks when I have to do my ASL assignments but watching your videos definitely helps and they are entertaining 👌🏼💯💕
Love it! Learning slang is one of my favorite parts of signing with deaf people. It gives the opportunity to show some personality. :) Ryan! Do you have things in your apartment (house?) to alert you to noises if Ellen isn't home? Like, the doorbell, someone knocking, intruders, the smoke detector, etc.? Just curious!
This is a great question. I would like to know the answer too becuase I am doing a project on this. An answer from soemone with ecperience would be great.
@@aubreyhughs5839 I know from experience in with the deaf community some people have doorbells that flash a light inside the home to alert you someone is at the door. also some deaf schools have the same structure a flashing light to alert of class change instead of the bell. hope this helped
My corporation hosted ASL classes by one of its Deaf employees...I was the only person who finished it. I went on to continue learning, and can just communicate now. One thing fascinated me was regional dialects. The word for 'shoe' in Vancouver, Canada, where I live was much different in NYC, a city I visited a lot. it meant the opening in a person's 'derriere'...very funny, but one certainly must be careful. Also I never could finger spell fast...Deaf people are super observant...they notice everything. I also am perceptually enhanced because I am certified Hard of Hearing...You two are very very graced to have found each other... blessings and regards...
Ohhhhh the train one is so interesting! In German we have an expression (der Zug is abgefahren) which basically translates to „The Train is long gone / left the station“. We use this expression the same way you described the sign one is used! Crazy how languages work...
This is only the second video of yours that I've seen. I enjoy learning from you. I started learning ASL about 20 years ago, and one of the first slang signs I learned was the "train gone" sign you just showed. Love that one! Other than some classes, my main teacher is a deaf friend for/with whom I sign regularly. She is probably more familiar with older slang signs, since we're both over 55, so it would be interesting to see Ryan and Joan (my friend) compare notes on regional, and maybe inter-generational, slang.
i’m learning asl in college now, 2 years into it, and i love how educational/informative ur videos are while also being fun and personality-filled at the same time. its so great :))
Probably the biggest thing i have learnt from your channel is the heightened conversational and communicative intelligence that is facilitated and becomes necessary to those who are deaf. Truly very admirable and i have a heightened respect and appreciation for people who communicate in this way either by choice or out of necessity. Its quite a beautiful form of communication, in my opinion, and finds a space within communication and personal interaction that amalgamates body language, facial expression, mannerisms, tone, and intention. Very fascinating, in all honesty. As i said, i can only respect these communicators more due to the lessons and information conveyed through your channel. Sim-com definitely slows people down, but I can appreciate your desire to be inclusive for your audience. All this slang is used on the East Coast-- I can only mention what I've seen in the DC area, but I'm a coda and Deaf always knows best (but haven't seen a comment from my area yet). TRU-BIZ is used rather often, TRAIN-GONE as well, same with "NO-MENTION" or shhh at 9:23. I've seen 6:49 but voicing into English would definitely depend on the situation, along with 11:20 -- which has always been is a tough one to put into English! Great choices for slang! I'd personally like to see more linguistic variation from the West coast and CA. Great video.
I just wanted to say that I appreciate what you were doing on this channel helping people with communicating with deaf people and answering questions and just talking about this type of stuff it's very helpful and I saw in a previous video that when the boyfriend (I'm sorry I forget your name I just started watching you guys today) went to get food and he told the McDonald's workers that he was deaf they acted very rude to him that made me feel sad because they shouldn't be like that and then when you went to Starbucks how that guy acted to you and was so nice I wish there more people who are like that. You guys you are really nice and good people and I hope you guys have a good day you guys are awesome thank you for helping us because so people are nice not mean for an example : "When my uncle and my cousin and I were at McDonald's and this was when you could dine in and there was this guy I think he had autism my uncle was very mean to him when he would ask us if we need anything and the guy was just trying to be nice and I was being nice to him because you should be nice to people no matter what and I wish I could have said like hey I'm sorry about my uncle and stuff but I didn't get a chance too." I wish that my uncle wasn't ignorant or racist and very mean like he is because this world needs nice people not mean people. I was raised to treat people how I want to be treated the only time I didn't do that is when people thought they could just walk all over me because of how nice I am I don't like that I have to be mean but we all sometimes have too but I hope that you guys can teach the kids how to treat people right and teach the kids more about people who are deaf and sign language and I wish that this will teach people to be nice more and be respectful.(sorry that it's Alot I hope this makes sence sometimes I don't make sense because of my adhd hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say...)have a good day and be strong I know it can be hard just stay strong.

My mom taught my sister and I to sign simple things so that we could be polite before we could talk😂 otherwise I dont know much about signing or deafness. But I had chronic Lyme disease for two years and that became a hidden disability for me for a while. Recently I've rlly enjoyed learning how other people with differences live their daily lives. I loved the video! Fun fact: the last sign is used by everyone in Argentina (where I’m from) and it has the same meaning. It was very interesting knowing that it’s part of ASL slang as well.
This was great to watch. Me and some coworkers were on the East Coast/New England and visited family of one of them. Both are deaf and I got to be an "interpreter." Problem was the local/regional/personal differences and the one that really got me was their sign for Cape Cod ... I didn't know where that was to begin with and the arm-hook sign they did and them trying to explain "the cape" ... that was entertaining. For the longest time I thought they meant cape like Batman, one on your back.
As someone who knows a little ASL (and will be learning more) I want to be able to help others who are deaf and have a hard time communicating with hearing people. I had the opportunity to talk to someone we saw signing at a museum and my sister and I went up and introduced ourselves (we both know conversational ASL). It was so fun to see their faces light up when they realized we could understand them. A question I have for Ryan: Do you ever get scared/spooked when someone comes up behind you and tries to get your attention? (Either by tapping your shoulder or something) Or is that something you have gotten used to and almost expect it every time you turn around? Love your channel too btw ❤️
I know the one at about 8:30 because of a book I had to read for one of my asl classes. Literally translated I think it's along the lines of "Train go. Sorry." Contextually it means "you're too late, the moment/opportunity already passed. Sorry about your luck." It was a good book!
I understood the train one because we have a very similar expression in Mexico that says "Ya se te fue el tren" that would translate the train just left you and means just what you explained, but it can also mean that you're getting old to get married. Lol. The old generation really wants to see us married. Anyway, love your channel guys! You've taught me a lot and made be become interested in the deaf Mexican community LSM :)

I got so close with some of these sign slangs. I work in retail and I have regulars that come into my convenience store who are deaf. They know I am learning and they help me when I get stuck. I also taught my kids as babies. Got rid of the terrible 2's. I love your channel.

This was fun to watch! I don’t know very many deaf people in my area, I learned ASL from my Mom since she used to teach at the school for the deaf and I have books too.
I just started an ASL class, only had two classes so far and I’m amazed that I can catch already some words that Ryan is saying. I love learning languages, I know five languages and it’s so addictive those first few moments when a language is opened and I get to peek inside it. With Ellen I can just hear what she says so I kinda ignore what she signs but with Ryan I am starting to “hear” what he is saying. It’s fascinating.
I’m in Huntington Beach too! I’m a Deaf Linguistics and Culture major at CSULB and graduated with my AA from GWC Asl interpreting program. I hope someday we can run into each other so we can sign! I always sign about you guys with my friends!
ooh, I knew the one you opened the video with! when I was a kid I read a book called "Train Go Sorry", named after that ASL expression. (it's a memoir by a hearing person who was raised at a Deaf school and later became an ASL interpreter.)

I just wanted to say that I appreciate what you were doing on this channel helping people with communicating with deaf people and answering questions and just talking about this type of stuff it's very helpful and I saw in a previous video that when the boyfriend (I'm sorry I forget your name I just started watching you guys today) went to get food and he told the McDonald's workers that he was deaf they acted very rude to him that made me feel sad because they shouldn't be like that and then when you went to Starbucks how that guy acted to you and was so nice I wish there more people who are like that. You guys you are really nice and good people and I hope you guys have a good day you guys are awesome thank you for helping us because so people are nice not mean for an example : "When my uncle and my cousin and I were at McDonald's and this was when you could dine in and there was this guy I think he had autism my uncle was very mean to him when he would ask us if we need anything and the guy was just trying to be nice and I was being nice to him because you should be nice to people no matter what and I wish I could have said like hey I'm sorry about my uncle and stuff but I didn't get a chance too." I wish that my uncle wasn't ignorant or racist and very mean like he is because this world needs nice people not mean people. I was raised to treat people how I want to be treated the only time I didn't do that is when people thought they could just walk all over me because of how nice I am I don't like that I have to be mean but we all sometimes have too but I hope that you guys can teach the kids how to treat people right and teach the kids more about people who are deaf and sign language and I wish that this will teach people to be nice more and be respectful.(sorry that it's Alot I hope this makes sence sometimes I don't make sense because of my adhd hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say...)have a good day and be strong I know it can be hard just stay strong.

I've started learning ASl, because its really a handy thing to know, and so far, I'm enjoying it! This one as very interesting. I know that teaching the deaf kids I have worked with over the years, there were new regional signs that were made up that were quite clever.

My mom taught my sister and I to sign simple things so that we could be polite before we could talk😂 otherwise I dont know much about signing or deafness. But I had chronic Lyme disease for two years and that became a hidden disability for me for a while. Recently I've rlly enjoyed learning how other people with differences live their daily lives. I loved the video! Fun fact: the last sign is used by everyone in Argentina (where I’m from) and it has the same meaning. It was very interesting knowing that it’s part of ASL slang as well.
This was great to watch. Me and some coworkers were on the East Coast/New England and visited family of one of them. Both are deaf and I got to be an "interpreter." Problem was the local/regional/personal differences and the one that really got me was their sign for Cape Cod ... I didn't know where that was to begin with and the arm-hook sign they did and them trying to explain "the cape" ... that was entertaining. For the longest time I thought they meant cape like Batman, one on your back.
As someone who knows a little ASL (and will be learning more) I want to be able to help others who are deaf and have a hard time communicating with hearing people. I had the opportunity to talk to someone we saw signing at a museum and my sister and I went up and introduced ourselves (we both know conversational ASL). It was so fun to see their faces light up when they realized we could understand them.
A question I have for Ryan:
Do you ever get scared/spooked when someone comes up behind you and tries to get your attention? (Either by tapping your shoulder or something) Or is that something you have gotten used to and almost expect it every time you turn around?

I know the one at about 8:30 because of a book I had to read for one of my asl classes. Literally translated I think it's along the lines of "Train go. Sorry." Contextually it means "you're too late, the moment/opportunity already passed. Sorry about your luck." It was a good book!

I understood the train one because we have a very similar expression in Mexico that says "Ya se te fue el tren" that would translate the train just left you and means just what you explained, but it can also mean that you're getting old to get married. Lol. The old generation really wants to see us married. Anyway, love your channel guys! You've taught me a lot and made be become interested in the deaf Mexican community LSM :)

I got so close with some of these sign slangs. I work in retail and I have regulars that come into my convenience store who are deaf. They know I am learning and they help me when I get stuck. I also taught my kids as babies. Got rid of the terrible 2's. I love your channel.

I just started an ASL class, only had two classes so far and I’m amazed that I can catch already some words that Ryan is saying. I love learning languages, I know five languages and it’s so addictive those first few moments when a language is opened and I get to peek inside it. With Ellen I can just hear what she says so I kinda ignore what she signs but with Ryan I am starting to “hear” what he is saying. It’s fascinating.

ooh, I knew the one you opened the video with! when I was a kid I read a book called "Train Go Sorry", named after that ASL expression. (it's a memoir by a hearing person who was raised at a Deaf school and later became an ASL interpreter.)
