    Dude..you’re way off. The WILD WILD WEST comment was a dig, not an empathetic retort. Samuel is passively aggressively digging at Will for having valued a cash grab Turkey but turning down a film that had much more credible artistic intent. Will saying “Exactly” is his way of knowing that Sam called him out on his BS.

      Will Smith is one of the biggest "phonies" in Hollywood. Every interview he has to talk like, what he's saying is so meaningful and important... Instead of referencing the wild wild west, Sam couldv'e said, "oh sut the fuck up", and still be appropriate.

    He wasn’t being empathetic when he mentioned “Wild Wild West” He was poking fun at him for making that movie since it was a flop. Basically saying “well you made Wild Wild West but you were too good for Django” it was a jab

      Sam L Jackson jabbed him the entire time. He even laughed when Will said he didn't want to be cheated on again.
      It's like Sam knew Will's life was a joke.

      I think both can be true - Will Smith often is open about it as a running, self-deprecating, if quite dated now, joke. And with the way Will Smith normally operates (Pre-Slap), Smith was in an awkward corner trying to answer that question, fumbling about, so with both the nonsense 'Love story' verbiage and later, Samuel L. Jackson was providing him an 'out' in the way of release valve. Interrupting can tend to be rude, but there's instances when you are under pressure to respond and an interruption from an ally or even just generally, to break up that pressure, even distract from that attention, can be welcome relief. Certainly that second moment, with the Wild Wild West Samuel L. did him a favour there - even IF it was a nice 'gentle jab' and lols - that 'It was just a gentle one' is a reference now, re: Chris Rock post-joke, pre-slap moment. :p Also, the other jabs can be seen as a friend keeping another friend's ego or getting carried away, in-check - Smith is one prone to getting himself in tangles even kind of foot in mouth in that sense of PC tango and spun nonsense like barely related to Django, 'love story' divergence he was under-taking. Without that interruption, Smith is one prone, the centre-of-attention chatter-box he can tend to be on camera, to talking the table out of the room, so to speak.

    The problem with all these body language guru type's and Body language UA-cam channels is that they forget how to act natural and just be themselves because they are constantly thinking and overanalyzing how others perceive them. The real difference between a body language dweeb and someone whose actually confident, Is that confident people are just themselves they don't really care about how others perceive them. Look at how relaxed Samuel Jackson is, He's just calm cool and collected. UA-cam has become a hotbed for overanalyzing things that used to be natural and effortless back in the day. The only difference between a confident person and an awkward person, Is that confident people don't overanalyze every situation they are in when it comes to the way they are perceived by the general public. They just go with the flow and adjust accordingly in the moment. Whereas awkward people are way too wrapped up in how other perceive them, And they try to send out this false sense of confidence which ends up completely backfiring on them because they don't truly belief in themselves. Confidence is not caring what others think in the moment becuase deep down you have enough self belief and inner certainty that your inner certainty completely overrides the opinions that other people have about you in the moment.

But if you're coming from a insecure position, that much more knowledge would only hurt you, because you obviously don't even know enough about yourself. Otherwise studying body language and analyzing communication should be a never ending challenge to help understand each other

    I watched this interview a couple months ago and this interaction popped out to me aswell, but I had a different focus to it.
    I felt like everything Samuel said highlighted how pointless everything that Will said was. Exposed Will's flaw, which is he cares way too much about people liking him. He turned down Django because he takes his roles as a reflection of himself and his personal character, and was too scared to be a part of that "controversial". And when Sam said "no I don't mind violence in movies...its just acting.." it was like it crushed all of Will's philosophy and reasons he said he didn't take the role, it didn't feel like he was helping Will at all, he was calmly, and nicely, calling him out. You can tell that Samuel doesn't respect Will that much anymore, but doesn't wish him harm. You can also see how hard it is for Will to be truly under the gun. He doesn't normally share the spot light with people, so this whole situation with all these esteemed actors, and tough questions, was really hard for him.
    I'm not trying to hate on Will though, I appreciate him as an actor and family man trying to keep him family together. Much love to the Fresh Prince.

      @@Shay45 true there's no way to know for sure short of asking Samuel L Jackson himself in private. But I guess it's just that Sam is the one who brings up Django and how Will turned it down, and there's a bit of personal offense in his voice, and which maybe by itself wouldn't mean much and seems in his character, but he doesn't let Will explain himself without "nicely" bashing his reasons. And the look on his face as Will talks isn't one of admiration, but like he see's through something.

      I agree. I was so mystified by the hate that movie got, I put a lot of thought into why everyone hated it.
      ()
      It seemed like Will Smith was bragging to the world about how he was a ideal father, and the movie was his way of teaching. People hate feeling lectured.
      ()
      ... especially by a suspected Scientologist. Even though there was nothing in the movie specific to Scientology. This was the same prejudice that made people hate John Travolta's Battlefield Earth before they even saw it.
      ()
      It glorifies a grim and heartless style of parenting that is very toxic to the kind of sensitive artistic boy that grows up to be a movie critic.
      Critics should have kept in mind that there are environments and threats we are protected from by hard men. Such men are necessary for our cushy lives to be possible. They are molded by harsh parenting such as this. Maybe don't be so sure it is worthy of contempt.
      ()
      Like Event Horizon compared to Hellraiser, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon compared to Bride With White Hair, and Oblivion compared to The Matrix, this movie really was bland and simple in the eyes of those who had already seen lots of better movies that were just like it. That doesn't mean it was a bad movie. To people who haven't seen a lot of sci-fi, or a lot of action-adventure, it was a great movie.
      ()
      Forgive me for generalizing from one individual but ... I met a fatherless black kid from the ghetto who spoke of After Earth with reverent hopefulness. He dreamed of meeting a father figure like that. I bet that movie means something very deep and very important to every fatherless black boy who sees it. That alone males me angry that anyone else dares to have an opinion about it. It wasn't made for us. We should keep our mouths shut.

    Will Smith is far too often his own worst enemy. Takes himself far too seriously. Even Pacino doesn't take himself as seriously. He's talented as f'k, but his inflated opinion of himself and his beliefs has held back his career significantly. He's rich, successful, famous and I'm sure very happy so what do I know, but Samuel clearly knows what's up.

    • @daoyang223
      @daoyang223 2 роки тому +3

      He does take himself too seriously. Look at what he did with the reboot of Bel Air. He literally remade a HEARTFELT comedy into an edgy art project. If he did it for fun's sake, there wouldn't be a problem. Thing is he takes it way too seriously and wants people to take that seriously too.
      It's like having a laugh here and there is a crime in Will Smith's eyes. If you don't take everything seriously all the time, you're basically a piece of shit.

    • @WallKenshiro
      @WallKenshiro 2 роки тому +1

      @@daoyang223 you truly nailed it. As you can see I wrote my initial comment a while before the Oscars, and I was right about everything apart from him being happy, he's clearly not f'kn happy. I'd feel sorry for the guy if I wasn't struggling and grinding my ass off every single day to pay my mortgage, and if he wasn't so far up his own and his wife's ass.
      He literally said he's a protector, defender of all the women, on a path from God to bring light to his people, right after publically destroying his and his wife's collective image. If they are scientologists then they must be the sacrificial lambs.

    The getting back your wife thing takes on a new light after she admits on her show to cheating. As a father myself nobody is perfect, but who is he really trying to be a role model for? His kids are... unconventional, he doesn't have to be a straight-laced rapper in the face of gangsta rap any longer and his "audience", career and character range could handle a Django type character and outright NEEDS it honestly. It's not the late 90s, we all grew up and he isn't changing, so I guess he's waiting for the next round of teens, tweens and twinks to rediscover his catalog?

    • @daoyang223
      @daoyang223 2 роки тому +1

      His daughter literally started writing pop punk tracks and his wife used to be a metal vocalist.
      The fact that Will Smith is trying to hold on to that "straight laced - rapper in the face of gangsta rap" is him trying to hold on to any sense of "swag" in his persona as... himself. He's a dad now, like you said, he doesn't need to be like that anymore, plus his kids are unconventional (and so is his wife of course).
      Even F.D Signifier (Black youtuber) has said that the whole caricature of "gangsta" in rap is all just to sell the persona so they can sell the music and merchandise. There really aren't any more "gangstas" in rap anymore. Ice Cube, Snoop, and many other's (especially MC Eiht) have moved on from that lifestyle in the classic rap era because that's just not how one should live life.
      Will Smith is a child mentally and he holds on to that because he so desperately needs to be in the middle of everything, getting everyone's attention and being the only one that matters. He's a narcissist for lack of a better word.
      If you watch his Bel Air reboot; it shows. The fact that he remade Will in the show to be the "CHOSEN ONE" type character who is meant to fix all the problems. It's really just become a White Savior origin story but about Will and in the modern day with current politics. Will really wrote self insert fan fiction into a show that he made successful 30 years ago to try and make himself feel good. When he could have just, you know, open up music schools for poor children, pay for scholarships for White and Black people (Asians and Mexicans too of course), or fed the hungry children.
      Will Smith is trying to be that type of guy who feels SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than you and everyone else without doing any of the work. WIll Smith wishes he was Akon...
      Akon literally built a career in Western countries and then took his riches, went back to his homeland, and built cities and endowed the local people with knowledge and necessities. Suddenly no one's starving, people are working, and clean water is abundant. Such a power move from Akon.

      I feel like his reputation and entire career is on the downward spiral but I don't blame anybody but him and his wife. he was fine being Will Smith the movie legend, hip hop legend and just multitalented mogul and know it's like watching an ig model without any filter when you have only seen them through it. it's not a good look, I used to enjoy watching his videos on motivation but now I'm thinking maybe he doesn't know what he's talking,g about. it's like when they say never meet your heroes, I'm so disappointed

    The N-word thing I don’t believe is why he turned it down. He’s in bad boys where he throws that word around casually loads. It’s very strange he didn’t want to do that movie tbh. But like someone else below said he turned down Matrix and said yes to After Earth so who knows what goes through his head when he looks at roles. Maybe the paycheque wasn’t as big as he wanted it to be.

    • @daoyang223
      @daoyang223 2 роки тому

      He mostly looks for franchises to do films in so he can set up his family for it.
      He did After Earth so he can set up Jaden for the franchise but it didn't do well.
      Look at Bright. He wanted that to be a franchise too. He wanted a steady paycheck. Playing it SAFE is literally Will Smith's attitude towards movies.
      So I dont think the N word was also the reason he turned it down

    I get that Will is not generally into violence. But he has been a Bad Boy three times over. He's Hancock. He's DeadShot. That "anti-violence" excuse doesn't hold up. It's clear he had an awkward moment here and probably internally realized he was contradicting himself. Sitting across from someone as infamous for outspoken brutal honesty as Sam L in a moment like this is bound to put someone like Will on edge. No one wants to be called out on a misspeak by their gansta uncle who's gonna put them on blast LOL

    • @daoyang223
      @daoyang223 2 роки тому

      I also think he didn't want to do the film due to just the way he feels too.
      I have a feeling Django was too edgy and real for him. Django is literally a slave who becomes free and gets his come uppance. Not to mention he gets his wife back.
      Lots of actual history thrown in and lots of racial tension wasn't really for him
      Then you have Bright which is a fantasy setting about racism............. against orcs and elves and things that don't exist. I have a feeling he's not really into the whole realism of Quentin Tarantino's films because QT loves to write realistic stories with bits of comical elements.
      That's just my take. I mean he also didn't want to do Matrix, but we all know he liked to play it safe. So there's a whole dynamic there.

      Will said he didn’t take the Django roll because he didn’t understand all the violence Quentin used in the film he wanted it more of a love story. So when the host questions Samuel on the violence then Will feels responsible for Samuel being on the end of these controversial, uncomfortable topics which get a rise out of people

    3:27 also everything after this point is part of an attempt to get SLJ and WS to engage in a conversation about blackness. a conversation WS has been thinking about the whole time, a conversation he fears. SLJ is cool and collected. WS is a show pony that has no credibility and will is hyper aware of that fact when faced with Samuel.

    The ending seems to me that the question was planned to get will and jackson to "argue". Then theyd have a good headline. Maybe will was processing this and because sam showed empathy will was more willing to sit back and think rather than be hostile and fall for the trap. I think this is huge on a larger scale. For the world ot sets a great example.
