  • Welcome to my thought-provoking journey into the unsettling world of "Perfect Blue," where the dark side of fame takes center stage. In this captivating video, I delve deep into the enigmatic layers of Satoshi Kon's psychological thriller, exploring its profound exploration of identity, obsession, and the price of stardom.
Join me as I analyze the haunting narrative and examine the complex themes that lie beneath the surface of "Perfect Blue." Through its stunning animation and masterful storytelling, the film immerses us in the life of Mima Kirigoe, a former pop idol seeking to reinvent herself as an actress.
As Mima's grasp on reality begins to crumble, we witness the intense psychological toll of fame and the challenges of navigating a world that blurs the lines between truth and illusion. Through my analysis, I uncover the symbolism, visual motifs, and narrative techniques that make "Perfect Blue" a truly mesmerizing and thought-provoking experience.

I'm really scared to watch this film, as I have PTSD from when I've was psychologically abused by my peers in High School. They used my Autism as a scapegoat to gaslight me into thinking that my mental disorder was making me hallucinate their abuse. Whenever they would call me a "retard", beat me up, or steal my possessions, or even sexually assault me...they claimed it never happened, that my mind was making me see things that were never there, or that which was there, my mind was simply making it seem like something else. In a few instances, they even went so far as to use the staff's own mental illnesses to their advantage to set me up to get into trouble with them. And when the adults did nothing to help me, no matter how much I cried to them for help, I thought I was going completely insane.

Late to the party, but in the original/Japanese dub, it's Mima's voice actor who says "I'm the real me/one". So it's a clear-cut ending; Mima got her happy ending of becoming a famous and well-known actress while Rumi is still stuck in her mind, disassociating and only having a few moments of lucidity before she goes back to being "dream Mima".
Correction: It may actually be Rumi's voice actor who says the final line in the JP dub, but Satoshi Kon confirmed in an interview/lecture that it *is* Mima who says the final line, NOT Rumi. So my words remain the same; Mima got her happy ending.

Because some things were actually just as much around back then as they are now, we just have social media/the Internet to amplify things. Things like people going too far with parasocial relationships dealing with depression/anxiety, and dealing with tribalism/mob mentalities/groupthink are things that have been part of society for a long time, unfortunately.
Satoshi Kon was writing about some of the issues that were going on during his time as well (and unfortunately, not much has changed due to certain aspects of the human condition are always bound to exist)... 0_0

@@hawkeyenextgen7117 It's perfectly fine to be skeptic of watching Perfect Blue. it handles a lot of dark topics such as questioning of one's own reality, rape, stalking, murder, etc. and it will confuse the hell out of you.
In my opinion, it is a good movie, but it doesn't have to be for everyone. It's a psychological horror for a reason. So being wary of your decision to watch it or not is normal.
If you really want to watch the movie and are aware of the warnings, go ahead, no one is stopping you. But even media can traumatize someone or remind them of past trauma.
I hope you are doing ok now and are away from any toxic people. Autism does not make someone crazy and it's horrible someone manipulated you with that idea.
Stay safe. And, really, if you think the topics of rape might trigger anything from your past or anything else I wouldn't recommend Perfect Blue and that's fine. It is good but overall, you won't die not seeing it.
If you do think you'll be fine and push through jump right in. If you do end up watching it and it is a struggle to get over, you could possibly talk to someone or a therapist or even share online your views on the film. It can help if anything seems hella disturbing or traumatic to you.
Actually, even better, if you watch it reply back, I love to hear/read people's views on this film and others by Satoshi Kon.

I remember watching this in a group call with The Vile Eye. It was such a horrifically surreal experience that made us constantly question the movie’s reality and left a lot to interpretation, which I think can be a invaluable tool when it comes to films. I agree that there’s always a struggle between a persona you craft versus who you actually are not only when it comes to UA-cam, but just life in general. We sometimes put on different faces depending on who we’re with and we can get lost in those masks, unsure of who we are.

The website was created by Rumi because she even asks for her credit card info to create an email so she can start writing people personally on the site. Mr Mimania is also thinking he’s talking to the real one (as we see the pictures in his room all speaking in unison with ghosty Mima standing over him.
Mima doesn’t believe there is another version of herself until Rumi starts to become unhappy with the handling of “Mima” after the r*** scene. It’s almost like Rumi is the one on the stage floor of the strip club scene suffering and wishing she was back on stage.
The narrative is unreliable, unlike fight club which SHOWS the moments we were wrong about, Perfect Blue makes the viewer just as unreliable as ANY of the characters in the movie. You HAVE to leave the movie going “oh what about ______ though”

I watched "Perfect Blue " myself and in all honesty, it's the most ACCURATE depiction of a celebrity's mental state being negatively affected by the entertainment industry, along with the terrifying reality of toxic, delusional fans feeling entitled to control their idol's personal life to suit their desires and resorting to deplorable actions (physically and emotionally) when (in their mind) said celebrity goes out of "character " and "betrays" their fantasy to point of wanting the "fake" removed permanently as an act of deranged revenge . Not to mention, even celebrities themselves have come forward with horror stories about behind the scenes incidents and drama that occurred during production that unfortunately stuck with them for years, slowly affecting their mental health in later decades 😔 (For example, Jeanette McCurdy's memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died " details the traumatic rise to fame she endured because of her abusive mother and how her acting career had an impact on her mental health)

As someone who has dealt with both an identity crisis and stalking, this movie encapsulated the constant paranoia, fear, and confusion you feel. It’s a movie that did its job so well I watched it once and don’t think I could watch it again aha. And this is from someone whose favorite movies include martyrs and the house that jack built😂

1:42 What’s funny is non of those commentaries on the industry or the internet were never part of the thought process of Kon, it was just supposed to be a story showing how she is just trying to deal with her new career and her doubt.
Edit: also if I remember correctly Rumi Hidaka wasn’t a pop idol turned failed actor, she was a failed pop idol because of her outward appearance probably (part of the idol look is the cute innocent childlike look). Hence why she was so protective over Mima’s career. Mima leaving the pop idol scene broke Rumi’s fantasy of being a popular Idol through Mima.

The last line in japonese is also said by Rumi's voice actor. I don't think that it means it's a delusion or that Rumi's the one in the car, but that it's a cycle that's going to repeat itself. Mima it's destined to became insane just like Rumi, since their story it's pretty much the same. Also, the "I'm the real one", or "I'm the real deal", depending on the translantion, could mean that Mima sees herself as the one that trully deserves fame, just like Rumi in her delusions.

Whilst it's obvious Mima is suffering from an identity crisis, I feel it's important to acknowledge that she is mainly suffering from psychosis, moreso than anything else.
Rumi's main theme is DID, whilst Mima's main theme is psychosis.
The last scene is to put you in the shoes of Mima, as you truly have no way of knowing whether it is Mima or Rumi in the car. The writer wants you to feel the same way Mima does, and it does it well, because no matter how much you theorise and come up with ideas, there is no right or wrong answer.

One of my favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite UA-camrs of all time? Couldn’t have asked for a better review! This film is so nuanced and I love what you said about the color, especially red since red contrasts blue. I think we all strive to be this “perfect blue”, with no flaws and be exactly like our persona. But red is literally in us, and each one of us has some level of imperfections that we don’t want the world to see.

I watched this movie for the first a few months ago with a few friends, and WOW. The art, the animation, the story, themes and psychological trippy scenes were all just, I can't even describe it, it was so amazing, and for the time, I was so impressed. 10/10 I could rewatch it over and over again.

I think George Miller is a great example of how to move on from one persona (or multiple) to another. He did love his time on UA-cam but due to YT's new policies and his own health and interests, he simply stopped and moved on. Now he's a successful mucisian, a career he always wanted, and is showing his real personality but he also has no problem acknowledging and sometimes even acting out his old personas. God bless that man for providing the some of the best memes and music I've seen and heard

Is it okay to feel scared of this movie? Sometimes I can't help but feel weak...

Hi! It is totally okay to feel scared of watching the movie. The trauma you went through is totally valid and it is normal to feel scared when seeing scenes/images/lines of events that may have happened to you before. The movie definitely contains a lot of sensible topics such as r@pe, mental health, violence and more. However, it is up to you to decide wether you want to watch it or not. Maybe you are not ready to confront your trauma and that is absolutely fine, you don't have to. The film, in my opinion, is amazing and I would recommend it. Maybe will you give it a try or already did? I sincerely hope you are doing well now. :)

I spent yesterday watching every video I could find on UA-cam about it. I eventually was sold and rented it on Amazon prime, but then I found out they only had the sub😭 as someone with adhd I find it very difficult to watch subs so I decided to wait to see it in dub. But I was just so mind blown to see you upload this today it’s like such a weird coincidence because I don’t hear many ppl at all talk about the movie. Does anyone know where I can watch the dub??
