I am looking forward to the day when the sleep conversation changes from "good sleep keeps you healthy" to, "here are proven, non-medication, methods for improving your sleep quality and quantity".
Слава Україні! Look into Huberman's podcasts - including the 6 part series with dr. Matthew Walker. One of the simplest and most effective things to do for your sleep is to control how much light do you get through your day: morning sunlight exposure is a must - then at lunch - once more before sunset - and finally keep your environment dark or dim after sunset. Should be enough to start.
@@bioptimization Thanks for your comment. I have watched the podcast you refer to, and I generally have the routine you mention in regards to light exposure. I also do most the other stuff typically recommended for getting good sleep....exercise, not eating close to bedtime, etc., etc, but still have trouble getting enough sleep (6 hours, normally). I believe there's many like me, and we're hoping for improved guidance from the experts.
I also suffered many years with insomnia. Now I have started meditation and deep breathing twice a day and before bed time. This is amazing and now I can sleep for six to seven hours. This is the only solution. I tried all the medication but all that worsened my condition. But believe me, only meditation is the solution. I am from India and follow Hindu religion. There are a lots of monks in India like Sri Sri Ravishankar who teaches meditation. Please follow him.
Great information! I have always said that when your body tells you that you need to sleep or even take a short nap......do it! We would do well to learn and appreciate that our body knows what we need and we all need to build a better relationship with our bodies! Loved this discussion!
Thanks a lot, I'm stressed and I can feel ny nervous system is pressed sometimes. I really hope i can achieve prioritizing sleep habits as much as I want to
M Walker's book should sit next to everyone's Bible (or whatever believes you might have)!!! ...And I will listen to it AGAIN...and maybe AGAIN...each time some information syncs and relates to so many real life examples that one might have. One of the BEST books I value dearly.
I've been to the emergency room 8 times in 9 months and 6 of those happened after 2 or 3 horrible nights in a row. Defective organs like hearts need deep sleep even more. Hard to get that sitting in a recliner.
I asked a wise man " why am I so tired at night" he said " you should be tired when evening comes,if you wake up tired something's up", always good in the morning ,has been my response if you were to ask since.Peace
There's lots to add to standard Doctor training both for treatment and prevention. Emotional regulation, mindfulness, stress and crisis management, along with wellbeing and patient agency, along with nutrition, appropriate exercise and the topic in hand, sleep. Dr Chattergee, if you can change the syllabus to include these topics, you will change the landscape of health in the UK for the better .
So sleep and nutrition are the two most critical aspects for good health, and most doctors know very little about either. That is about the most infuriating, depressing, ridiculous statement I can think of.
And too many people listen to doctors like they are knowledgeable on every aspect of the human body. Always get a second opinion, and do your own research. Keep asking questions. If something doesn't seem right, question more.
more needs to be said about caffeine and sleep disruption. my mum aunt and now three family members all terribly addicted to tea and coffee have alzhiemers. as we know Alzheimer's is causes by plaque. this plaque is cleared every night during DEEP SLEEP. DEEP SLEEP. what prevents deep sleep. caffeine. google countries with high Alzheimers and them countries with high caffeine Then countries with low caffeine and then low caffeine. see the connection? we need a survey from every family and friend of victims of Alzheimer's re caffeine tea coffee chocolate etc.to make that connection. good work these two doctors but they are not going far enough.
''why not talk to all our patients about the importance of quality sleep... ? '' ... ;cause then you will have a lot less sick people ... and as they teach nowadays in medical schools ... a patient cured is a client lost !
This guy looks like a cross between the lead singer in an EMO band and a used car salesman. So, sleeping helps the brain and body recover....wow, why didn't I think of that. And we need to buy a book to to learn it? Ohhhhhkay.
A couple good tricks is never drink coffee cause it fucks up your sleep deeply which is correct. Another trick I dunno is if it from this guy but use mouth tape to breath from nose when sleeping. There are lot of optimizations that you can make to get a better sleep. However you do not really need any if you wake up feeling GOAT after sleep. Some people wake up feeling like shit or just normal.
I have MS; in my life, sleep only happens with meditation 😔 I cut down on the sleep meds, but I can’t go without it.

The amount of sleep is important, keeping a circadian rhythm is also critical, eating some carbs helps to get sleep

I’d rather listen to Matthew than you banging on, not as bad as Huberman but same ball park, Joe Rogan is safe.
