I feel like the lack of a timer is responsible for making it extremely realistic at portraying WW2. It feels like you literally are going through 1000s of soldiers just to take one single objective. That to me, along with the rest of the freedom the game gives you, is what makes it so immersive for hours. Learning a new map is very overwhelming as a new player, and then slowly becomes immensely rewarding the more you realize how sightlines/flanks line up. (even with mini map it isn't clear where hidden sniper nests are on every map). It really feels like it was ahead of its time in 3d map design.
Hardly dead, I still play this and the original and yeah the community’s small but we’re all committed and play consistently. Hands down my favourite 2 games of all time
With Valve about to release Counter-Strike 2 it'll be a good marketing move for them to work next on remaking Day of Defeat and Team Fortress into the Source 2 engine. DOD can reach out to the history nerds audience and those who coming from other FPS fandoms like COD and Battlefield. It could also serve to one-up the competition with Valorant which is itself aiming towards a wider and diverse target market
@@hafizo_kurosaki eehh it depends, both games are set in waaaay much larger maps and people waitin 3 hours to get an objetive, for players that enjoy inmersion and really have the time for long match is good at it but day of defeat is more a arcade game like, you hop on on a server and start killing whoever crosses on your path, simple as that, small maps 3 or 5 objetives and thats all also theres a WW2 game that is basically DOD 2.0 it called day of infamy its really fun to play i recomend to check it out
HLL and PS (one of those is now Squad 44, I forget which) are more tactical style games, DoD is more Arcade-esc like CoD with quick respawning and near-constant action. The only real comparison is the trio are WW2 shooter games.

I loved playing this game with my classmates back in 2006. We were in a year-long Navy medical training (SFIDC School) and would set up our laptops for network play during long breaks and lunchtime. "ARTILLERY VERIECHT!" BOOM!
You've convinced me to finally try Day Of Defeat: Source soon. Though I am a bit sad you didn't touch more on the loud and proud sound design of the guns in the game. Amazing video production and TIGHT commentary as always though!
Very glad you enjoyed! And yeah for dead game review format Videos I tend to focus on everything else... But you are right, day of defeat is a downright CHAOTIC experience. Especially when you hear that rocket coming towards you...
@@Cheecken Agreed! Its a shame games that have followed in the games footsteps are DEAD DEAD. Day Of Infamy for example its pretty much on its last legs or grave. Something about Day Of Defeat has the curse to be a dying/dead game. Its crazy to me how the source version is more alive than its Day Of Infamy counterpart.
@@splashlemon2966 Day of Infamy is a very interesting case. I bought the game too and only mentioned but didn't go into detail with it as it is a game I am interested in covering soon. I think a big reason for why that game couldn't succeed, was that it went deeper into the simulation esque nature of hardcore shooters like Red Orchestra 2. Day of Defeat is hard to describe, as it is hardcore, but also kind of not. It is a very simple experience that is easy to get into but hard to stay alive in. I think Day of Defeat Source just scratches a very specific itch, which Day of Infamy doesn't. But this doesn't detract from Day of Infamy, I think the environment design and art direction of that title is picturesque to say the least, with the entire game feeling like taking place inside of a propaganda enlistment poster. I hope I can drum people together to play that one for a good few days, but I think that one will predominantly make use of bots for recording. And convincing people to buy a game that noone plays is always a hard sell :/
@@Cheecken You mentioned other game that sadly is dead, or dying, Red Orchestra 2. It still maintains a small community but doesn't compare to the old days.
I played this back in the beta 2.0 HL mod days. This really was one of the best first person shooters ever! This was one of the games that I could play all night and never get bored with. The community of players was great too. Some of the best team play I've ever experienced in a game was in this one! The maps were some of the best designed that I've ever played in how they were very push heavy and you had to fight and work as a team to move the line back. A lot of modern day first person shooters could learn a lot about gameplay from it!
They really need to make like day of defeat 2 or something, this game is super good and it showcased capabilities of source engine well, would be nice if they woulda either make a new game or a remake on source 2
Played the original for years. Was a member of the RIP clan and then later 36ID under the screen name “Aleutian” until they disbanded. Spent many late nights playing map after map. When source came out I of course purchased it and played it a ton, but the original will always be my favorite game released by Valve, way too many good memories.
Great Recap As an addition, DoD:S had a vibrant competitive scene, at least in Europe. There were quite a lot of tournaments (ESL, Clanbase, various cups), and it even got featured in the Electronic Major League for 2 seasons. Competitive DoD:S was a great time. It was a great game with a strong community, still really lacking a real successor. Kinda miss those days
The original day of defeat was the best game imo. The sniping was incredible. Cooking grenades, popping around a corner , throwing a grenade point blank in someone's face was really fun to do. It was easy to die. Knifing took one hit. Koln was my favourite but it was removed. I spent alot time playing it. Getting behind enemy lines made a difference. I miss it alot
Agree with everything you said, except for map choice 😂 liked Harrigton. Yes 1.3 was a real skill based game, much better than source. I hope they remake it and leave everything alone just better grafics ofc
Man, I have so much nostalgia for the Source era games. Multiplayer was better back in the day. Endless custom servers with endless maps and mods, everyone talked, you knew the people on your favorite servers, annoying people and cheaters were simply banned by the mods. There was also something about the graphics of the Source engine that is super hard to explain, but they had this weird look that made these games feel kinda surreal. It was a similar feeling liminal spaces induce. Combined with the fact that there were these endless weird custom maps made joining a new server feel like being Alice in Wonderland. Does anyone else relate to this?
The one thing I remember from playing this game as a teen is how absolutely brutal the recoil was. Together with the fast movement speed, it was a really hard game to master. This was the game I learned how to aim in shooters.

spamming "BAZOOKA" or "Flank left/right" with the Nazis will never get old. This game is a gem and even though most of the times it has ~300 peak players it's hardcore nostalgia ride playing it. Also the 1st MRB server (you had some footage playing with those guys also) is a super friendly and nice group of people to play with, and with around 100 ping playing from Netherlands, it's more than acceptable for my complete noob level.
Man I played the shit out of this game in 2010/2011. Just hours on end on avalanche only servers and some of the other all chat community servers. Such a blast! Every now and then when I queue up for the next 5v5 competitive matchmaking game I'm hit with fond memories of times when 16v16 servers with modded parachutes and +2 grenades on each player where the peak of gameplay for me.
Just started playing DOD original (not Source). Suprisingly, it has people, and is pretty good. But it has the same problem - capture points mode is also endless, with no timer.
Source games wise, Day of Defeat Source is probably the most fun alongside TF2 pre-bloat. The casual nature of Day of Defeat lets you hop in and just grind away at the endless push and shove even without friends. However it is massively barebones. Missing the other allied and axis factions and even pacific theater. There's also just something missing system wise, with both gamemode and class wise. Like class synergy just isnt there. And there should be SOMETHING to actually break the endless camping (WW2 wise that would be aerial bombing, mortar strikes or tanks) If Valve ever did decide to come back to this 'arcadey WW2' game for a new edition, it would be something special. As is, it is a fun shooty multiplayer game.
I was brand new to PC gaming and saw this game on a massive discount. I got the game for only $1.29 or something. Instantly fell in love with the game, and anything valve related.
Perceptive review; nice job. Thanks. Basically, the flag capture team objective is easy to understand and track in-game. This fact means that players who've not trained together can effectively coordinate to pursue the team's objectives. Also. no matter your skill, you can be part of the winning team. Further, even the worst shooter can be the key player who captures the last flag, with in-game recognition of this fact advertised in an end-of-round splash screen. The BEST public server team combat game ever.
God I loved this game, even played competitively at a high level in my teens for awhile. It was honestly the only place for awhile that you could get like decently large scale battles like on the beaches of normandy and such, and it was the coolest thing I'd ever played at that point. I wish it hadn't died off so quick when games like Battlefield came out, because it was a lot more accessible for players who didn't have good enough hardware to run battlefield or the right setup to fly helicopters or aircraft and such at a high level, but enough people left that it killed the competitive scene which then killed the casual scene as well unless you wanted to play in a handful of servers with cheaters and admins playing favorites and such.
The only MP game I bought at retail, even though Steam was already around then. Donner was my favorite map. I remember great servers with great people. HL2: Deathmatch was another good one. Sad that both are dead now.
The game never died though, it just gradually shrank, but yet maintains a significant and dedicated community, and a lot of newer or older players will jump in occasionally as well. This was an era when COMMUNITY ran servers, with their own custom maps and rules were highly valued, and like you mentioned it wasn't filled with BS such as "Grinding" the classes, lootboxes, unintuivive menuing, and so on. Just a very simple and easy to use interface, and you can jump right in and experiment with whatever you want. In my view, this, as well as the original DOD continue to the THE best WW2 Multiplayer shooters. The map are not so big that it turns into a slop of a running simulator, it's just the right size for the 32 player count max for just about any map. There are loads of experimental player designed maps and player designed "Game modes", like the gun game for example. It has empowered the community to thrive for all these years, unlike so many other games after it that claim to be so much "Grander", than DOD - like Enlisted, Hell Let Loose, and so on. They just fail to capture what DOD had, in part because they get so caught up in the "grand scale" theme, that they forget to make their games truly fun for their respective player sizes.
God i love DoD. Played hundreds of hours per year during beta, the swinging k98 crosshair, bandaging etc etc. So ahead of it's time. Pro studios were making largely funded ww2 games that couldnt hold a torch to DoD
I legitimately think there is no other game that emulates the DoD experience. Not even Day of Infamy which titled itself as a spiritual successor comes close. Games such as Red Orchestra 2 or Hell Let Loose are great experiences, but not quite the blend of semi-realistic arcade gameplay that is found in DoD. Legit, its the most fun WW2 shooter that I have in my Steam Library. Thanks for commenting :)
This was my main game for a couple years but it was far too neglected by Valve. Imho they should have added back the Brits or.. Here's a wild idea - imagine if they added the Russian side? The gameplay was incredibly fun, but it just lacked depth. After maybe 2 years of playing it so much, I felt like it had run its course for me. And I never felt this way about Counter-Strike (I've played all versions of it). The few updates Valve releases for DoD:S were very much appreciated but just not big enough in scope. Also, I just have to mention the incredible community in this game. The friendliest of any FPS I've ever seen. Everyone in this comments section gets a high five from me just for that.
I love the DOD community! I should play the game again soon, it has been a hit with not just me, but also my inner friend circle. Thank you for the comment, and a high five to you too ;)
Original DOD was so fast and fun. DODS was a bit slower paced but also fun. Day of Infamy was the last spiritual successor to DOD, made by the people who made Insurgency. Also a very fun game but it seems to have died too now.
I’d love to see a remake of this game and all it’s maps, and maybe even potentially a DOD Campaign, even if it’s made by the people working on COD games.
I personally wouldn't like a new DOD game, as strange as that sounds. Day of Defeat Source fills a void for me that no other game actually can, the mix of hardcore elements with stupid casual drop in fun, is something that is lacking today, and previous attempts at carrying on the torch of Day of Defeat, ultimately resulted in the creation of Red Orchestra-like experiences, where the gamey aspects were subtly replaced with the soft simulations a-lá Tripwire. The great thing about Day of Defeat Source is that in spite of Valve not supporting the game as much as they should have, the community prevailed, and it being an old Source Engine game, it can run on any system imaginable. What if servers go down? You can host your own. What if the vanilla game becomes boring? Download a community made mod. How do I get friends to play with me? The game is really cheap and I bet a lot of people could still be roped into playing this excellent shooter. I do get your idea however! It would be exciting to see what a Day of Defeat in the modern times would actually look like. I suspect however that if the formula is changed too much, we can see another Day of Infamy happen, where suddenly the spiritual successor of Day of Defeat, plays like something akin to Rising Storm. Also, its good we don't have knife skins and hats in Day of Defeat Source :P Thanks for watching and commenting :)
been playing dod for almost 20 years, theres almost zero servers left and nothing under 250 ping from Australia, and the closest servers are all ping limited to 200 so you get kicked instantly. DoD update pls Valve.
I’m one of those die hard lifelong fans. I’ve been playing since 2002 when it was in Beta 3.0. Anyone remember Hill Classic? 😅 And even though it’s far below games like Hell Let Loose when it comes to graphics, it’s easily my favorite game to play.
Great stuff ! I put in a lot of hours playing this game back in the day :) Shout out to my old DOD clan ( 4th Wehrmacht)... Recently found Hell Let Loose , great game for old players like me :)
Wasn't meant for eSports. I mean I played the original Day of Defeat at the CPL in both 2004 and 2005. DOD was one of the bigger team eSports games back then. It is shame that Day of Defeat Source didn't become a big eSports game like the original was.
Baffles me why Valve basically let this game die. The devs selling to valve and the forums becoming part of the steam site basically killed off the community as well. Some good around 2001 ish. 😔😔
hey can anyone help me, i just got this on the steam bundle sale and when i launch it flashes the valve start up and flashes the title screen but it is a black screen but i can hear the music i have a 1080 and windows 10
Used to love playing DOD original in the 2000s. Definitely played it more and preferred it over Counter-Strike. Never played the Source version due to computer not being good enough at the time. But man DOD was a fun casual game.
As much as I loved the Source engine, I always liked the original DoD better. I think it was the textures and sounds. Also I notice the Bloom effect on in the Source DoD footage which always pissed me off.
Funny story I played the first dod for years and bought dod:source a week early! It was due to launch Sept. 26th 2005 and I took a week vacation because my daughter was gonna be took by c section if my ex didn't go in labor though the weekend! Well you could pre load the game on steam on the 25th as soon as my download got done my ex's water broke lol! Didn't get to play the game until the very next weekend lmao
i remember playing counter strike competitively during 1.6 and source's on the way release. i saw day of defeat and it was like a random game i had on my steam library available for download. started playing it, semi regret it because it ruined my gameplay in counter strike. i wasnt the greatest but i stomped every casual pub. competitive players were a whole new challenge. but i couldnt come back to improve xD also day of defeat was the first game i learned about spawn door blocking so, that was hysterical

There's also just something missing system wise, with both gamemode and class wise. Like class synergy just isnt there. And there should be SOMETHING to actually break the endless camping (WW2 wise that would be aerial bombing, mortar strikes or tanks)
If Valve ever did decide to come back to this 'arcadey WW2' game for a new edition, it would be something special. As is, it is a fun shooty multiplayer game.
I got PTSD from playing it, 10/10 would recomend
Seeing that grenade land right next to you and you know you cant outrun the explosion...
@@Cheecken even worse is to watch as your friend, that you meet a minute ago, gets obliterated in front of you
I miss playing this game with my mates. Ah the good ol' days
Started playing this game after a 10 year break. Even better than I had remembered.
i still play dod source
I was brand new to PC gaming and saw this game on a massive discount. I got the game for only $1.29 or something. Instantly fell in love with the game, and anything valve related.
I absolutely loved this game during its prime in 2003! Still think about it to this day. Hence why I decided to UA-cam it.
*nobody will talk about day of defeat + brotherhood of arms combonation = Battlefield Style Valve Software Game.* what a glory times man.
I'm still playing on some of the gun game servers, Gold source and Source mods will never die!
Played hundreds of hours on Day of Defeat Source and I played DoD a fair amount too. I hope they make a new DoD in the future.
This is so underrated
Really loving the series. Keep it up!!!
That I will!
I played back in the day, quality game.. It was at its best prior to the source release.
I absolutely love Day of Infamy and it's a shame that game is basically dead now.
There were pro leagues and even lan cups in dods and it was the best thing ever. Great video, made me wanna reinstall it again :d
Great! Then I did something right 😁
TRUTH! I was in a Cal and IGL clan back in the day. 😅
Another good review Cheecken!
Seriously, my favorite game when I was like 11 or so. So damn good.
Thank you for the comment, and a high five to you too ;)
The possibility of endless matches is a huge downside, but overall i agree, the game is fun.
matter of perspective!
Also, its good we don't have knife skins and hats in Day of Defeat Source :P
Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Still play it with joy.
Day of Defeat was so fun, especially when you were trying to hold back a push and on the verge of losing the last flag
been playing dod for almost 20 years, theres almost zero servers left and nothing under 250 ping from Australia, and the closest servers are all ping limited to 200 so you get kicked instantly. DoD update pls Valve.
Got the game on steam sale, its been 3 days and i already got 17.5 hours
It's addicting as hell isn't it?
@@Cheecken it is!
I can believe it. This game was so great.
If you want to cover a really dead WW2 game, I suggest Day of Infamy, the spiritual successor to DoD
Already on the list!
Best game ever, it’s currently on sale for about $2!
for those included myself too and who plays it still.. legends never dies
One thing there was a big e sports scene called comp where very good players had specific servers where they competed against other clans
Wasn't meant for eSports. I mean I played the original Day of Defeat at the CPL in both 2004 and 2005. DOD was one of the bigger team eSports games back then. It is shame that Day of Defeat Source didn't become a big eSports game like the original was.
amazing video i have the game i want this game to be alive again so badly
There are quite a few active and full servers on different times of day. So have fun playing!
I hope they make a version in source 2
Update. This game is amazing
The GOAT. no_love saluting all my DoD brethren!
That Kar98 sound is pure nostalgia
Day old Dad's Feet: Saurce
IMAGINE the smell
This game is still super packed.
Baffles me why Valve basically let this game die. The devs selling to valve and the forums becoming part of the steam site basically killed off the community as well. Some good around 2001 ish. 😔😔
Had a lot of great fun on the _dod-orange_ maps.
hey can anyone help me, i just got this on the steam bundle sale and when i launch it flashes the valve start up and flashes the title screen but it is a black screen but i can hear the music i have a 1080 and windows 10
Fuck I loved this game
Check it out again sometime, still lots of fun :)
311 hrs is DOD:S - great game!
it will be unexpected if they remake day of defeat with source 2
dod Source was released way before tf2
Used to love playing DOD original in the 2000s. Definitely played it more and preferred it over Counter-Strike. Never played the Source version due to computer not being good enough at the time. But man DOD was a fun casual game.
Such a phenomenal game! A couple of thousands of hours left in just a couple of maps :)
As much as I loved the Source engine, I always liked the original DoD better. I think it was the textures and sounds. Also I notice the Bloom effect on in the Source DoD footage which always pissed me off.
And the ability to customize EVERY THING
Funny story I played the first dod for years and bought dod:source a week early! It was due to launch Sept. 26th 2005 and I took a week vacation because my daughter was gonna be took by c section if my ex didn't go in labor though the weekend! Well you could pre load the game on steam on the 25th as soon as my download got done my ex's water broke lol! Didn't get to play the game until the very next weekend lmao
i remember playing counter strike competitively during 1.6 and source's on the way release. i saw day of defeat and it was like a random game i had on my steam library available for download. started playing it, semi regret it because it ruined my gameplay in counter strike. i wasnt the greatest but i stomped every casual pub. competitive players were a whole new challenge. but i couldnt come back to improve xD
also day of defeat was the first game i learned about spawn door blocking so, that was hysterical
I still enjoy playing the original one
I wonder what it would be like if dod got a CSGO style treatment with new content. Including the cut content
My fav multiplayer game.Very addictive game.My nickname is ESCOBAR(el patron),
My fav server is 1st Marine Raiders.my favourite team is German team, however U.s. guns are little bit better. My fav gun is German Machine Gun 😀come and lets play!
