How To Detail Black Paint! - Chemical Guys
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 сер 2020
- Black and dark color paintwork is loved for its lustrous shine and extreme depth but to achieve a flawless finish means performing the right steps of the detailing process. Give your paint a smooth as glass finish with a clay bar treatment. The synthetic material extracts embedded contaminants that clot the pores of the paint, leaving a rough texture that also dulls the finish. After clay barring and inspecting the paintwork of this BMW it was determined that polishing would be necessary to remove scratches and swirls that were caused by improper washing and drying techniques. The abrasive combination of pad and chemical diminish a fine layer of clear coat to refine a beautiful shine. Once desired level of paint correction has been achieved it is time to protect the surface, using glaze to mask minor imperfections while adding depth is like adding make-up to your paint. Lock in shine while repelling harsh elements with the combination of sealant and wax. Lastly, enjoy a brilliant jet black, radiant glow!

Used all three on my brand new black 2022 Ram 3500 dually. Wow the paint looked wet, crazy shine, and made huge difference in attracting dust. Looked even better the next day after it cured and no dust on it.
Happy detailing!!
Will this method protect my car against water spots and dirt ? I washed my car yesterday, clay barred it and polished some panels only for it to rain and all my work is ruined…
@aimized1460 You always need to use a paint sealant and/or wax after polishing, and if you don't protect your work, then you're leaving it open to even more contamination.
Great video! Thank you for the great tips in order to keep my black ride looking great!
Happy detailing!!
If I knew what I was getting into before getting my black car, i wouldn’t have gotten a black car 😭
Hey! The finished result is well worth the process. Happy detailing!

Thanks for this video! I bought everything in this video and plan to use it on my new to me 2017 Black Ford Expedition XL Limited. its gonna take some time but it will be worth it. then to cancel my monthly automatic car wash subscription and try to break that habit. No more squirrel marks for me. Will be getting all the fun things for car washing soon as well... power washer, air cannon etc. Been watching your videos for months now. Great content!

What speed was jet seal applied? Dial the polisher to 1-2? A much needed video. Love my black BMW but it’s a lot of work.
Hey! When applying a glaze, sealant, or wax, we recommend applying it on speed setting 1. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!

Pretty slick work 👌
Happy detailing!!
I use a bunch of your products d/ which are awesome. Do you have a ceramic coating available? What's your thoughts on ceramic sprays?
Hey! We recommend HydroCharge, it is the easy-to-use SiO2 ceramic spray coating that delivers a brilliant high-gloss candy shine, extreme hydrophobic properties, and the durable protection of a ceramic coating with the ease of use and speed application of a spray.

Fantastic work.
Could ask a question
Once all these steps are completed
If I want to wash my car again after say a week do I need to repeat each process step by step,
or what steps should I apply for tops up?
Also just wondered can I repeat all the steps you've shown, how often? or can it be completed as you've shown weekly from stop one, straight through
Thank you and most appreciated
Hey! Thanks so much for your message. It is not necessary to repeat these steps before your weekly wash, simply use your favorite car wash soap to maintain a clean finish. Clay bar the vehicle at least twice a year or as needed depending on the look and feel of your paintwork.
Would you recommend applying the Butter Wet Wax after the Jet Seal? Or just use the Quick Detailer after the Jet Seal?
Hey! We recommend applying Butter Wet Wax after Jetseal. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
If I want to apply a ceramic coating, glaze, sealant/wax, how long do I wait in between each application before applying the next product? Don’t you have to wait at least a few hours for the ceramic coating to cure before applying another layer of protection? And does that apply for each product? Or can I apply the sealant or wax immediately after the glaze?
Hey Kris! After applying ceramic, allow at least 3 hours before applying glaze, sealant, and/or wax which can then be applied almost immediately after each other.
@@ChemicalGuys Ceramic coat before wax, glaze or sealant? I was thinking ceramic coating was like a last finishing product. I should write this stuff down.
Great video! How often do you add the product to the polishing pad? What size pad should I use for my challenger 1320 Scat?
Hi Bob! Reapply polish to your pad after every two foot by two foot section. Glaze, sealant, and wax spread very fine with a machine so reapply as necessary.
Say you’d want to apply HydroSlick ceramic coating on this black car. Would you apply it before or after Jet Seal?
Hey! We recommend applying HydroSlick before Jetseal. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
It was a great video.
One question: can I apply ceramic coating at the end?
Hi there! After polishing the vehicle is when you would want to apply your favorite ceramic coating. It can then be layered with glaze, sealant, and/or wax if so desired.
- CG Nick
@@ChemicalGuys
That's great. Thank you so much. You have wonderful contents.
I will do all these steps on my car.
@@ChemicalGuys so do you use a pad to add the ceramic coating?
How long would you wait between applying the gloss and the sealant?
Hey! We recommend allowing 15-20 minutes to pass in between application. Thanks for watching!
At what point would you apply the ceramic coating? And how long does the protection last on the work you just completed in this vid? Thank you!!
Hi there! Once the the vehicle has been washed, clayed, and polished(if necessary) it can be ceramic coated.
Ok thx. You would happen to have a “new black vehicle ceramic start to finish” video do you? This one was a good one. Just didnt know if the glaze is needed or the final two steps.
Which pad do we use for applying glaze, sealant or wax? Can we use the same pad for the 2 or the 3 of them?
Hey! We recommend applying glazes with a blue pad and use a black pad for sealants and waxes. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
Watching from the Philippines 🖤🖤. I hope I can use some of your products 🙁🙁🙁

After this detail. What products should you use you to regularly wash and maintain a black car?
Hi Alex! After the vehicle is coated, you can use your favorite car wash soap to enhance and maintain a brilliant shine.
Just bought a black Tacoma and Challenger so thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for tuning in!
Before anything great videos! Question. Should i do this after washing my car ? Or before?
Hi Carlos! We're so glad you're enjoying the videos. It would be best to wash the vehicle first then clay and continue with the detailing flowchart.

Hi there. Amazing explanation. Can the Synthetic Quick detailer be used when we dry the car after washing it?? Many thanks
Yes, absolutely!!
Great video
Thanks for the amazing feedback!
Do you have to polisher after a clay bar or is that an optional step?
Hey! If your paint is scratched and swirled, we recommend polishing it. If your paint is not scratched and swirls, you may skip the polishing step. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
Can you apply hydroslick ceramic liquid wax then top it with butter wet wax for the warm glow that carnuaba gives
Jet seal after a good clay bar if needed if needed rub it out if not jet seal an then hydroslik it
Hey! We recommend applying HydroSlick after polishing. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
So after all that can you apply ceramic coating on top off everything you just did ?
Hi Victor! When using a ceramic coating it is best applied to bare paint after polishing. It can then be layered with your favorite glaze, sealant and/or wax.
- CG Nick
Would you recommend compound first on black paint that looks horrible? Swirls scratches etc.
Hi Josh! After washing and clay barring the vehicle, inspect the paintwork to determine which combination of pad and chemical is necessary. For heavy imperfections, I recommend using an Orange Hex-Logic Pad and V34 Hybrid Compound.
My car is a super dark blue. Will this routine still suit?
Just bought a 22 GR 86 in Raven Black (my first black car) I wash it almost weekly with your guys products but I was wondering if you guys have a specific kit I can buy for black?
Hey! That's awesome, check out the Black Car Car Kit to clean, enhance, protect and maintain a deep gloss.

How often would you suggest to do this process?
Hey! We recommend repeating this process every 6 months. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
So the order is is wax, glaze, and sealant? A detail garage store told me it was glaze, sealant, then wax.
Hey there! Following the Chemical Guys detailing flowchart, we recommend to apply glaze, sealant, and wax in that order. Check out this video.

They were correct
Hi i have a black with metallic flakes very nice color i want to know if i apply this clay bar process can i apply then black light glaze to enhance the metal flakes and then carnauba wet wax to protect the finish. Thanks
Absolutely, that is correct!
I was waiting for curves polishing with orbital at that point but you skipped clip 😅; however great thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏.
Thanks so much for your feedback
You have to enjoy it I do mine twice a year and u need the chemicals and polisher
Do you wash and dry the car before applying the clay bar?
Hey! Yes, it is important to wash the vehicle before using a clay bar.
Is the glaze better for a vehicle that will be parked outside?
I just got my car repainted. Should I use jet seal first then hydroslick wax or what steps should I take?
Hey! We recommend allowing 4-6 weeks to pass before applying anything. Once the paint is fully cured, we recommend applying HydroSlick first, then follow it up with Jetseal. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
Should I add a six inch back plate to my torqX?
Hi there! Adding a 6 inch backing plate to your TORQX will help to cover more surface area and reduce polishing time.
I have a lithium grey F150, which product do you recommend for long lasting shine?
Hey! We recommend Black Light, it is pure eye-candy for black and dark-colored cars. The amazing hybrid glaze adds tons of deep wet shine, fills in minor imperfections, and lays down a layer of durable sealant in one step!
www.chemicalguys.com/black-light-hybrid-glaze-and-sealant/black-light-glaze.html
This might be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyways. What do you do when you get to the logos and badging on the vehicle you are detailing? On my truck I have in large letters RAM on the tailgate. Do I just polish over it? Thanks for any feed back
Hi Gregory! Try masking off trim and badges before polishing.
after all these steps, can i apply ceramic coating a day after or it has to be done right away?
Hi Darla! For best results we recommend to apply coatings as soon as possible however it is perfectly fine to do so the next day as long as the vehicle is kept dry and clean.
Will the jet seal & the glaze prevent swirls? Thanks!
Hi Brandon! Glaze and sealant will add depth, gloss and protection against harsh UV rays however a ceramic is what adds abrasion protection against scuffs and scratches.
So what all detail treatment would you recommend after ceramic coating a black vehicle?
Hey! Check out HydroSuds and HydroSpeed to maintain and boost ceramic coatings.
So, at what point would I apply the "Black Light" hybrid radiant finish in this process? Does it replace anything in the video like the Wet Mirror finish or is the Black Light applied in addition to everything else? If Black Light is applied instead of Wet Mirror, does the Jet Seal still go over the Black Light? Please help.
Hi there! Black Light and Wet Mirror Finish are glazes which would be applied before sealant and/or wax.
@@ChemicalGuys I appreciate the response, but it didn’t answer the question I posed.
@@LightofDeneb black light replaces wet mirror finish
Awesome tutorial! would be nice if you guys could apply this to a all-black Harley-Davidson… dont mind volunteering mine lol
That's a great idea!
Should I apply these products after or before Hydroslick?
Hey! Apply HydroSlick to a bare surface and then it can be layered with glaze, sealant, and/or wax.
How often do you repeat this process? If my car is Ceramic coated, can this go over it, or do I need to buff it off?
Do you guys recommend anything for harley wrinkle black engine paint. Want to keep it clean and protect it from fading? Will this product work?
Hi there! Safely clean and protect the surface using Meticulous Matte Spray Sealant.
www.chemicalguys.com/meticulous-matte-detailer/meticulous-matte-detailer.html?gtmListValue=Internal%20Search
So they aren’t using any type of a pad lubricant. At this time? I noticed in several videos done by Nick that he all most all ways uses a pad lubricant.
How long does that protection last or how often should I apply those glazes and coats
Hi Raul! JetSeal lasts up to 12 months and glaze will only bond for a few months however both can be applied as often as desired.
When your polishing with v34 do you need to polish with v38 after too
Hi there! Yes, it is necessary to refine V34 with V36 and/or V38.
can I use the V38 on the high gloss finish on the B-pillar?
Hey Pierre! Absolutely, use V38 to refine light imperfections and enhance gloss.
Is that a orbital or rotary polisher?
Hey! The TORQ 22D is a random orbital polisher with a 21mm throw to cover large flat panels very quickly.

Won't jet seal cover the anti static of wet mirror finish?
Hey! No, Jetseal will enhance shine and protection. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
Is your Blacklight product considered a glaze, polish, or sealant?
Hey! Black Light is a glaze. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
How many bars would I need for a whole car/small truck?
Hi there! One clay bar can decontaminate several average size vehicles.
Can you do the final polish by hand?
Absolutely!
What kind of scares me about using the V line is you said on another video that some of the clear coat is removed in the process.
Hi Daniel! Yes, polishing will remove a very fine amount of clear coat to refine the surface and thus remove scratches and swirls.
Great video, I have a black Camry and polished it with v38 last April, it’s a daily driver so I can see light scratches, would like to know if I can use v 38 every 4 months?
Hey! We recommend V36 Optical Grade Cutting Polish and you can do it every 6 months. V36 Optical Grade Cutting Polish is the great all-around cutting-polish that eliminates light to moderate paint defects and imperfections from all paint types, then finishes like a fine polish.
www.chemicalguys.com/v36-optical-grade-cutting-polish/v36-cutting-polish.html
Can I wash with your waterless wash and wax prior to the claybar?
Absolutely, it is perfectly fine to use waterless wash to prep the surface for a clay bar treatment.
Wish I knew what I did wrong on my car, After polishing using C4 my Black hood now has a "buffing pattern" down the entire hood, almost looks like streaks but the size of a buffing pad.
Hey Patrick! Follow up with P4 and a White Hex-Logic Pad to remove holograms and buffer trails.
Does this process work for every color?
Hi there! Yes, this exact process can be used for any gloss finish paintwork.
Can you use a wax instead of jet seal.
Hey! Yes, you may wax instead of Jetseal. Thanks for watching and happy detailing!
Can glaze be applied after any jet seal or wax as my car was polished using V38 and jet sealed
Hi there! Glaze can be applied after sealant and wax however for best results we recommend applying glaze to a bare surface before sealant and/or wax.
What pad would i use for v36
Hey! We recommend the White Light Polishing Pad, it finishes to restore reflection, clarity, and depth after cutting away heavy defects with a cutting pad, comes in 4”, 5.5”, 6.5” and 7.5" sizes, and vented and unvented form.
