Music for Russ Is Right Open:
(UA-cam royalty-free music): "Leslie's Strut" by John Deley and the 41 Players
You do more riding than most of us so the chances of something bad happening are increased, having said that all of this was self-inflicted, not making sure your batteries were charged, not carrying any tools on a long ride, at the very least you should have had a bottle of slime and an air pump which you could have found room for. But all in all this did make a three-part video series and I know that's what this is all about but we do come here to learn things and I learned long ago as a Cub scout to be prepared, you should do the same.
Hi Russ lol, I'll end this right here for you and all the followers, tire liners are good whether they are cheap or the over-priced and over-rated Tannus Armour, I'll take a 3 dollar pool noodle any day, leave the Slime at home, for 26" x 4" fat tires you simply need put a half of a bottle of "Flat Out" in each tire, I swear by it.
I’ve heard the same, tannus are over priced pool noodles
I hate flat tires!! I have been riding e-bikes for 2 years now and I had 3 flats, all on the back tire. This year before I took my bike out, I used the Flat Out and, "knock on wood" I haven't had any tire issues. Also, I agree that there a good people out there. A few weeks ago, I lost my car keys. Luckily a good person found them and returned the keys to the grocery store I shop at as my keys had a small card for that store and they were able to look up my info and I got my keys back.
Keep in mind, Russ may be unfortunate at times, Russ may have had a rear tire disaster, but Russ is never wrong...ever, and that Russ is always right....all the time! All kidding aside, we're all just glad you made it back safely Russ!
😀
Hey Russ, we’ve all been there pal. One thing I won’t do any more is go on a ride without my simple tool kit , pump and two bike tubes. One is for my front tire as it is easily removed and get this. I recently found that Huffy sells what is called a quick change bike tube. You don’t have to take the back tire off. Simply pop the tire off the rim, cut the tube off an wrap the Huffy tube onto the rim. One end meets the other. I used it last summer to replace my back tube nd it was a piece a cake .. Got me home nd I just put the regular tube . Good luck
I think the real emergency solution for you is to just add a small 8 Oz bottle of slime to your tool kit. Ideally it's better to pre-slime of course, but I get in your case why that's not practical. That was a pretty big nail though, not sure even slime would have worked.
Also AAA has a bike rescue service included with a standard membership in some states. I think you cam use it 2 times per year. We have it in my state so that's my last recourse if slime fails and there's nobody available to come get me.
Never had good luck with slime. Plus it is messy.
I think you were lucky in this situation this time, that help was to hand.😮
Fantastic public service sharing your experiences vs preparedness and especially that you explain about the so much greater weight of your electric bike for example my electric bike add on conversion doubled the weight of my bike to 75 pounds which is very heavy if your battery goes dead because it’s almost impossible to pedal a bike at that weight.
Happened to me. New motorcycle tire on Kepler rear - 6 miles on it.. Riding on sidewalk and run over broken 6" long lawnmower broken blade. Was hiding under freshly cut grass - didn't see it. Using walking mode did get home 1.5 miles . Tire and tube junk. Over 1" inch wide cut.
Glad Mrs. Right was at your side in your hour of need and you got yourself and the bike home okay! After owning my ebike for the past year only recently did I purchase a rechargable compressor and a tire patch kit in case I would need to fix my "puncture resistant" 26" x 4" tires. I continually add to my tools and keep them and other things in my panniers, that still allow me to use the rear rack if needed. I don't have extra batteries to carry but I do have bike insurace that includes a phone # for myself and bike to be picked up and taken home or to a bike shop. All of this helps settle most of the anxiety one can have while out for a ride, but I know what you mean about riding the shoulder of the roads - they're dirty and can be a hazard. Anyway, watching your videos has made me mindful of these things and because of you I feel much better while out riding knowing I have what I need to deal with troubles while out on my bike. Sorry you had this problem, but perhaps it will help others to be mindful about what steps they can or should take in sililar cicumstances. Thanks!
😊
The simple solution is to carry a can of Gup tire sealant and tape your tire levers and patch kit to it. You can patch the tube without taking off the rear tire. Several UA-cam videos explaining how to do it. I carry a pump too.
Hi Russ this is the only reason i carry a decent chain and lock .
It will come in handy if something catastrophic happens on a ride where I have to leave it to go home and get my
truck / tow truck at that
point .
Also if you have some cargo bags on your bike where you can remove items that may get stolen, most importantly your battery. At least you can take some things with you . 😮
You forgot the Boy Scouts' motto - " Be Prepared"! I would put a new tube in, not worth risking another flat or slow leak, especially with as hard as it is to get a hub drive rear wheel off. Another advantage to mid-drives, the rear wheel is MUCH easier to remove. I can get mine off my e-bike in seconds.
That is a good lesson, never ever leave without tools , i have 11 pounds of tube ,rachet ,chain in case of . 26x4 tires come off by themself almost all the time .
Even if we got the tools ,at our ages it would be hard. When i change tires i flip my bike over ,just that would be an ordeal when your alone my wife always helps me . Best thing i guess is to know where your bike repair stores are near the route you expect to take that day
👍
Hi Russ..one thing I did try when I was changing a tire on my bike was a set of motorcycle tire levers. They’re about a foot long made of steel. Not very practical for out on the road but for at home they’re better than the small 3 inch plastic bike levers.
I have the plastic ones but ordered metal ones from Park Tools.
Gorilla levers are the best , its a really hard plastic that won’t scratch the rim.
When i bought my folding bike from a private seller, i couldn't test it out, as the rear tire didn't have much air it it. It also was cracked all over for sitting idle for years. Put air in it, and got 8 months of use before i got my 1st flat. Went to a bike store, paid $$$ for them to install some "puncture resistant" tires, and got a flat in both tires days after each other. Patched the front fine, but had to resort to the bike store for the rear because i couldn't get enough torque to unscrew the rear hub. Praying that i don't get stranded again, because i only have Uber as a backup. Safe travels.
😕
Too bad you didn’t throw some Flat Out in those tires ahead of time, you would have been fine most likely. I had to do 3 bikes and it was very affordable considering the drama it prevents. 20 bikes is definitely tougher but at least put it in your long trip rigs.
Can get a gallon of flat Out , in the case of many bikes
Sunday bike insurance provides towing and rides home. I always carry tools, tire patches , and air pump for bikers in distress.
I would also recommend sliming your tires, it’ll fill any punctures immediately!
Nice that others tried to help and for your wife’s availability. I would recommend taking the bike to Mike’s or Village Cyclesports. I am 100% certain that Village Cyclesports will fix it for you and much closer than REI. One more thing. Believe it or not, if you have AAA, they can come pick you and your bike up too. As always, oot very quickly, but reliable.
I will fix it myself. Just need a better tire lever. These are tight on the rims so a metal one is needed over the plastic variety. I have change out tires before.
@@RussIsRight yep, I know you can. I’ve reached the age that for some things, it’s easier to pay someone else for the hassle. We had Village Cyclesport true up 2 wheels and fix a flat on my wife’s trike for less than $50. But they are much smaller wheels!
Just had tires replaced a bike shop. Found a pinhole sealed by slime. New tubes re- Slimed.
Hi Russ. What an ordeal for you. My last (and only) flat occurred years ago when I was riding single track trails about five miles back in the woods of a local forest. I ended up pulling and pushing that heavy ebike all the way back to civilization where my car was parked. Fortunately the local Giant dealer looked after me and I was back on the trails a few hours later. I'm glad you got home safely. Take care and happy riding.
👍
One thing I took away from my flat was that I need to peddle more when I ride to get in better shape😋
Hello,
you need a tannus armour.
Greetings from Germany
🔌⚡⚡⚡🚲👌
Hey Russ, I'm glad you finally made it home. I always wondered if that day would come, when you would call me to pick you and one of your bike's up. 🤷♂️ Sorry I couldn't help out buddy. My offer always stands though! I now keep my motorcycle rack mounted on my truck permanently. 🙂
Not a problem. 😊
O man talk about a bad day 😢 glad you're ok
This is exactly why I just got Tannus tire armor for my tires.
Getting a flat on the rear wheel would probably send me over the edge. Always a worry as long as I can remember - especially in an unfamiliar area, even with needed tools on hand. You need a BIG ratchet and socket to get the back wheel off. Now that my wife and I have new full size e-bikes, we are looking forward to better weather and doing longer paved trail trips. Having a partner on longer trips away from your hour house or parked car would be a huge advantage not to be overlooked. Our KBO Breeze models were factory assembled with puncture resistant tires, but I still have my doubts with a nasty nail or screw. Glad you were able to make the best of it.
Hey, Russ. Sorry you got a rear tire flat. That is a bummer. So glad you were close enough to get home with the help of Mrs. Right. I dread getting a flat. Today at the State Park we are camping in, we rode a few back roads and had to dodge a lot of down tree debris. We had a huge, serious storm two nights ago. I hope the small branches I did run over did no damage to my tires. I kept hearing a few pings and crunches. 😊
The flat has been fixed. I needed stronger tire levers to do it. It would be very difficult to do in the field. Took a while to do. Can't imagine having to do it in the hot sun and without a chair!
@@RussIsRight exactly. Can’t imagine that either.
I was on a group ride a month ago, and one of our riders got a flat. Turns out it was a pair of nail clippers that he ran over and was sticking out of the tire. It was beyond repair. For me, I travel with Slim and used it this past week when I got two flat tires after trail riding. It worked. But, I just purchased a gallon of Flat-Out so I can add to the bikes I ride the most. I am switching to Flat-Out because it will last up to 10 years, slim in 12 months.
Hey Russ, Mrs.Right saved the day good for her!!! Yes there are good people in this world. I've had 2 flats both on the rear tire. Nails like your flat were the cause. So I used Muc It a similar version of Flat Out and been lucky so far. It seals around any kind of puncture to the tire and is a great product. You'll probably have to put on a front basket for your Deer to accomodate tools. Be safe out there Russ!
Hey Russ, sorry you had a flat. I think even with tools, you would have had a hard time with your e bike's flat. Last weekend on my way home from my great nieces christening on a very popular bike route I almost ran over a large sharp screw, I turned around, stopped traffic and got rid of it, a few blocks ahead and there was another screw, then another, I got rid of all of them, but I think someone was out to get a cyclist, not to mention there's lots of people living in tents in that area of town that are on drugs. A flat is my main fear, since I don't know what I would do, I guess I would call the shop that sold me the bike, they are supposed to have a vehicle to help bring bikes to the shop. Are you going to fix the flat yourself or have a shop do it? Thank you for this video. 😎
I added Flat Out after my flat and having to walk the bike about a mile home which seem like ten😀 Working in my garage it was still a pain to get the wheel off. I wonder if they sell run flat tires for bikes?
The 16yo grandson and I have become fairly proficient at removing the rear tire on his RadExpand5. Quite a few flats 🤪. I always carry a 13mm wrench (fits RadRover rear wheel axle nuts) in the rear rack bag. Along with a spare tube, hex key set, and tire levers. The tires these ebike brands advertise as"puncture resistant" is a load of bull.
Russ, perhaps it's time to open up the wallet and buy what appear to be needed accessories/neccessities. Maybe sell one of the bikes and use that $$ from the sale to purchase a basket ($60-$70?), multi-fit panniers, spare tubes, Flat Out, etc, etc. Just a thought 😎
Fat tire e bikes are impossible to move when flat. Know from personal experience I always have a spare inner tube and tools and pump on the bike.
Flat out w/Kevlar..Saved me multiple times..
You need a black cowboy hat so you will be the Johnny Cash of ebikers. haha. Agree FlatOut is the best, but also agree to many ebikes to put it in. Maybe dedicate a few to the Botanical Garden Missions and fill those with FlatOut. Glad you made it back safely is the most important thing. ;-)
🤣🤣
I also worry if I get a flat on a trail that cars are not allowed on. How can help come?
My AAA membership covers my e-bike also. If I am on a regular street, will come with a truck and take me home or a repair shop up to 100 miles away.
hi Russ, been ebiking since 2022 here in Montreal, Canada. Biking infrastructure here is the best. Lots of bike routes. Love biking even more at 62. Was wondering if you tried looking where on the tire caused the flat. the nail head looked big enough to find the flat. if you did find the nail before your wife came, why not ask her to bring an air pump and Slime and see if it would of patched up the hole? Anyway, got a flat tire once in 10 months on bike trail. I'm pretty sure it was a goat head. Put a patch on the tube and filled some Slime and this year no flats so far. I carry some Slime in a small bottle enough for 1 tire now and an extra bike tube.
Just put FlatOut in the bikes you take for the longer rides then.
I think AAA works for bicycles. Not that it would be your first choice but it's an option.
The universe will conspire to aid you if you let it. I've been travelling on two wheels for decades and people will definitely step up to help you when you're in need. It'll be good practice for you to fix that rear tire. Record your efforts.
I have fixed rear tires before.
My flat experiences have been the front tire and I always have my tools with me, so it wasn't that much of an issue. It was hot though so sitting on the ground fixing stuff when its 100 degrees isn't fun but was doable although I did wonder if I was going to survive, but maybe I have a bit too much drama in my thinking. I also always carry an item that is suppose to pump up and seal, temporary, a tire with a hole in it. I haven't used it for my bike but I have used it on my car and it worked well. So I'm hopeful.
I did learn while changing the tube out on the front tire is doable but painful, I don't think I could do it on the back tire so I'm hoping my pump and seal item works. If it does, I'll advertise it on my channel, but until I know if it actually works, I'll just carry it in my bag and hope.
Best to learn how to change your tires beforehand. AAA will help but it’s not much good if your 10 miles down a trail where cars/trucks are not allowed. Changing the rear tire/tube isn’t that big of a deal. It just takes a bit of time. About 30-45 minutes from start to finish. Practice at home taking your tire off and reinstalling it. I’ve worn out 2 sets of tires already so I’ve had the chance to practice. Also have had 2 flats, one front the other the rear. At least that’s my experience. Im glad it all worked out for you.
I have changed out fat tires before. This one is tough to get off the rim. I ordered heavier duty tire levers.
Yes Russ. Put Flatout in all the bikes. come on now. And no tools......yeah. Nothing needs to be said.
All the reason to get a bike with a mid drive. Easy to remove the tire like any other bike and change the tube or patch it. I build my e-bikes and they are half the weight of bought bikes so putting it in a vehicle is super easy. If my battery went dead I could absolutely pedal it home with exceptional gearing. Don’t get me wrong I do have a bike with a geared hub with 3 batteries utilizing a battery combiner but in no way could I pedal it more than a couple blocks at most.
Mid drive bikes get flats too. Removing the wheel off the frame is not hard on my bikes. It is removing the tire from the rim that is difficult. Standard tire levers don’t do it. I ordered some bigger metal tire levers to do the job.
@@RussIsRight
Tires like that is easiest to squeeze the tire towards the center to make it easier to remove. I have very hard Scooter/motorcycle tires on my 20” fat tire bike and I can get them off with cheap plastic tire levers. Cheers and ride safe.
Sound like Russ was wrong. LOL.
Think about using Mr. Tuffy liner for your bike.
Russ is never wrong. I told you guys that! 🤣
If you had your pump with you you could have just kept filling your tire up, fill up ride a block so on and so on :)
Hahaha! 🤣
If you used Slime in all your bikes I think it would bankrupt you! 😅 Glad you made it home safe.
I have the BCAA membership, so any flats I get within 160km I just call them up and they either fix it on the spot or will bring my bike and I home or to a repair shop. Its good piece of mind for my vehicle and includes my ebike for $10.42/mth.
👍
Yeah I had my next door to get me in 10 miles where I was at because a nail on highway shoulder I was at. I didn’t have any tools with me and it was too hot outside.
🙁
I do not have as may bikes as you. Having so many bikes compounds your problem. I always carry a spare tube, tire levers and a way to pump up my tires (I just have a good mini pump) CO2, electric pump …
This is for an emergency.
Also if you only had one or 2 primary bikes you could have Tannus Armour Inserts in those bikes you primarily ride. Seems like you ride your Magic Cycles a lot. Armour Inserts you can ride the bike with at a slower speed with the tire flat and it does not reck the rim according to Tannus.
What I did is on the bike I ride the most I went out and purchased the best tires I know of. A Schwabe. I have not had a flat with those tires for years. Have been on 10 bike tours (15-20 riders on each tour) in Europe and they use Schwalbe tires and no flats.
I know you can not spend this much on all your bikes, but the primary bikes you are riding it might be worth it.
I Hate Flats ….
Hi Russ ... one of your best videos this morning . On the last item on your affiliated page you have a link for foldable pedals but it links into something else . can you fix it please .. thanks
Thanks for letting me know! It is now fixed.
I have seen videos where you leave the tire on the bike just break your tire down and in the area where the hole is just slip the tube out from the tire patch the hole put tube back in pump it up .now I haven't tried it but I did see more then one video on UA-cam about looks easy. Me I carry a can of tire inflatable stuff from canadian tire had compressed air and a slim in it so you just put it on vavle and press the button and that works I've used it on cars and lawn mowers so I always carry a can of that .at least you can take with you what ever your riding that day
If you’re not careful while doing that - you can easily get the tube dirty with brake dust and other debris from your bike, that may cause another flat. To fix a flat often you have to remove whatever foreign object was causing it. Not easy to see in the fender well of your bike with everything still on
@@EBikeBuilder_ I would still try it in a emergency case just to limp home to do with more tools and safer area
How deep is the Father’s love for us. His Word says to call upon him and he will answer. Thank God for rescuing you!
😊
Your PSI is high, keep it 15 or lower, unless you have a lot of goat head Thorns you will probably never go to another flat again.
No goatheads in my area.
So maybe I should replace my bald rear tire. Is this a morality tale?
If it is bald, it is time.
Moral of the story: Russ isn't always right.
Russ is always right. I told you guys that! 🤣
Flat out.
Do you not use Flatout in your tires???
No
Is that a speaker to the left of your shifter?
On the opening of my videos? Yes, it is a Bluetooth speaker. I never use it any longer since I talk on all the videos. I used to use it to keep me company as I rode by myself, but doing the videos now, talking to you guys keeps me company better. 😊
❤
What about Uber XL/
Perhaps
Can you use AAA for ebikes?
Don’t know
Do you use flatout in your tires?
No.
Next time.. Call me! 🤗
Ok!!
