@Click Bait Sure for unrestricted. Then for Bosch batteries in a normal restricted/legal state the max Eco range is ~140 km and max Turbo range is ~57 km. Even in Eco mode there will still be ~20 km of heavy biking to do.

"Derestricting an e-bike is hard, you shouldn't do it." That was clearly the BBC talking, it's not hard. manufacturers make it really easy and then just don't document it. This is because of draconian laws designed for mopeds, and to insulate motorists.

people want this and honestly we should just let them have it
      its more dangerous!!!
than what? oh dear someone might fall off and die ok but when did we ever care about that when we allowed motorcyclists to squat on 2400cc of engine and throw there asses down the road at over 100mph?
      what about pedestrians!!!
what about them a ebike is the least of there worrys if there in the road
      there not taxed!!!
grow up and stop being salty that your gas guzzling car has to pay tax for the tarmac you shred up each year alot of ecars are tax free too and ebikes do way less harm to the roads and enviroment than a ev does
      they dont have a license!!!
most people ive spoken to would have no issue obtaining the cbt to ride theese
      they dont have insurance
yeah but youd be upset when you found out how little that hurdle would cost us
      but kids....

meanwhile goverment wants us all to be greener get evs and shit well here we are with a solution many are ready to adopt
unlie electric cars theese are accisible and workable for the parts of society that cant have EVS for example those who live in flats who cant charge there cars in the car parkk those who cant afford a brand new car and those who dont want a car
      there cheaper transport
greener transport (despite power coming from coal just like EV's unlie evs there lighter and use less power to get the rider around than a EV which carrys you plus several tonnes of your car meanwhile my little motor just has to move me and my sub 15kg bike frame .... and maybe a pizza!

It was very interesting to see how much faster an e-bike is compared to a regular bike. I'm totally for e-bikes. It expends the pool of people who can ride with me. I'm a strong cyclist and my wife, my kids and a lot of my friends can't keep up with me unless they use an e-bike. It's a win-win. I get to ride with my favorite people and can still get a decent workout. E-bikes are amazing. Thanks to GCN for including the e-bikes in your show.

@@EricLoic I ride with e-bike riders often. On one recent ride one of them took a corner too fast and come off breaking a rib. On another ride the Tail end charley was on an e-bike. He was happy to go slowly. But one of the other e-bikers came back to him for a chat. They got into a deep and meaningful chat and before they were aware were speeding off into the distance. I had to struggle to speed up and catch them and was breathless at 25kph.They were so deep in their conversation they were unaware of the cycling. Yesterday I came across a snake on the path when I was 2 meters from it. I could deviate around easily but if I was on an e-bike going faster the snake would have been in my spokes. Bro it's not even going to be close, not only are e-bikes much faster but people can go a lot further before getting tired. Hank could literally lap him and finish the full race twice before he does. Also a fact most wouldn't know w/o having one the battery dying hardly matters. The e-bikes are still high-end bikes with good gearing and would still be much faster than the average bike on no battery. So worst case Hank's battery dies and it's slightly worse than Mark's bike but while he has the batteries it's like 3x better.

It depends. Uphill, definitly the steeper the easyer for the e-bike but downhill, maybe. Because, downhill it depends on the rider and not the bike as speeds are way faster. On the flats, it depends on the limit of the e bike because after the limit it can become hard against the normal road bike as the weight and chunkyness holds the e-bike back. So there you have it. Oh and when cyclocrossing definitly the non e-bike. I don't want to carry my ebike🙈

But yeah, as an E-Bike rider it's amazing how "heavy" they get when that battery finally conks out, I've done a couple rides where I deplete the battery and still had a kilometer or 2 of modestly steep mountain cutoff to climb to get back home, no regrets though, it was a fun ride and good exercise

At this time in 2021. It is not true that all these systems for Bosch remove restrictions totally, they only increase the limit. So be careful what you buy and check the new speed limit they may impose.
Speed box 3 finally does up to I think about 55mph as well as the great Volspeed up to around 60. Badass, Eplus and many of the others only increase it to in the 20's mph.
Now, on our pack road rides we sometimes jump to up to 40 mph on the flats for short distances. An ebike speed restricted in the middle of that pack and not dead last is like someone tapping their brakes with everyone else accelerating. What could go wrong ?
Ebike builders are making bikes very dangerous with their speed restrictions. Especially Bosch, they are the worst ones. You don't buy a Bosch ebike you only rent it. They still control everything you do.
They don't even allow you user configurable assist levels you have eco/tour/sport/turbo. But bosch decides what those are. No low/med/high or 0-100% user settings. They used to have a totally user configurable interface with their original motors but they learned their lesson. They don't really want you to become stronger on the ebike, they want you to be completely dependent on it. They also sell opioids. ;)

But as soon as your ebike can reach 28mph you have to register the bike as a moped. Very long winded process. Im looking into building extended range ebike mopeds. Getting them registered for sale.

the problem is why do you ride ? for the speed? for the workout? as a cheap transportation? quick transportation in the city? to enjoy time with friends? for touring? it all depends on your answers whether an ebike is better or worse for you. I'm mostly doing mtb currently , usually with friends, I would probably get an ebike if
-I lived in mountains, to do enduro/DH without the chairlift and ride longer distances and be able to practice my DH skills
-my riding buddies had eMTBs too
-eMTB were comparable to regular bikes in price for the same level of performance (not talking about straight line speed on a flat, smooth road)
-ebikes were not making progress so quickly and become obsolete after a few years, and if batteries could do a thousand cycles without losing too much range
-if I could commute safely with my bike. not the case because of 1/ driving my daughter to school 2/ not having bike path to do most of the commute safely 3/ working from home
probably a single one of those reasons could convince me to get one, maybe also if the ebike act passes

The level of salt in the comment section is enough to start a new Dead Sea lol.

It's not salty to not be surprised at a powered bike beating an unpowered one. It's just pointing out the obvious.

@@justbreakingballs Sorry, my comment was very badly written. "Salty" means reacting angrily and resentfully, especially in response to defeat or disappointment. The comments aren't salty: people aren't angry or resentful at being beaten by a motorized bike. They're just saying "Well, duh, of course the e-bike wins." It's GCN who are pointing out the obvious, not the commenters.

It’s not stating the obvious, because it’s not obvious exactly what an un restricted E-bike is capable of, which is the purpose of the video. They’re not doing this to see who wins for Christ’s sake.
You guys must be a bundle of laughs down the pub.

If your thinking abt getting a SpeedBox get one! I got one for my trek rail e and I can do 45 mph cruising. It’s so much fun and the laughs when I over take people in cars is amazing!

Worth noting that in the US states that recognize Class 3, no license is required here, it's just that they usually can't use bicycle infrastructure except for painted-on bicycle lanes, unless specifically allowed with signage at the infrastructure. (In Europe and countries following European regulatory structures, they're legally a subclass of mopeds, hence the license and registration requirements.)

Thanks for this video lads! I have been wondering what the upper limits might be. I am currently riding a Specialized Creo Turbo SL Expert EVO and it is speed limited to 28mph here in the US but I'm seeing average speeds on Strava segments up around 25mph over 5 minute segments which puts me at or near the top of many segments for my local rides. Of course I never let those records stand but it's nice to see what's possible!
