You think the Dominion had a long period of preparation, the Founders keeping to themselves, consolidating their strength while playing their neighbors off each other before keeping out with fleet after fleet of ships? Or did they make alliances with convenient species here and there?
@@howardlanus8467 Probably made alliances as it suited them, their goal was control, not annihilation, so it would make sense if they would use more docile species to serve their goals without initiating a violent conflict with them. Since they are so obsessed with controlling everything tough, they would have probably had to resort to violence eventually, or at the very least the threat of violence, to keep everyone in line. But I could totally see them as the type to appear as benevolent helpers at first. Their whole demeanour and everything make me think of them a little bit like the aliens in Final Conflict, or the Aschen in Stargate, in the sense that they're strategic and think very long term.
I think that the Dominion was one of the most intriguing civilizations in all of Star Trek canon. Thanks for this excellent (and I do mean excellent) video on the Jem'Hadar.
Yup, I just finished running through DS9 for the first time. Took about 5 or 6 months. Definitely a thought provoking setup for a civilization, if you can even call it that. I hope stuff like that doesn't exist out there in the galaxy

Considering how the Founders seem to have taken some inspiration from the Tleilaxu. I would not be surprised if female Jem'Hadar were made into something similar to axolotl tanks.
When I was like 11, I wrote a fanfic about female Jem'Hadar, since I thought it was stupid to have an all-male race. I envisioned the females as being still humanoid, but capable of flight -- something no Star Trek species has been able to do, to my knowledge. Too bad I wrote it on a typewriter, long before I knew what fanfiction even was. Anyway, I always thought canon Jem'Hadar had the potential to be more than they were portrayed as, like the Klingons before them. It's a shame they seem designed to just be cannon fodder. "It's okay to kill them -- they're only genetically engineered monsters."
There are very few sapient Star Trek species (from alpha canon) capable of flight. I am aware of four, and only three of these can do so in Earth-standard atmospheres and gravities. One of those hovers rather than flies. For your reference, I've spent too much time outlining them below: First up are the Skorr and the Aurelians; both are from TAS. Notably, the design of the only Skorr we saw, Prince Tchar, was largely reused by the production company for the only Aurelian we saw, Aleek-Om, to save on budgetary constraints. The former appeared in TAS: "The Jihad" and the latter in "Yesteryear." The Aurelians have also made a background appearance in Lower Decks (LD: "An Embarrassment of Dooplers"). Second in appearance are the Exocomps, first seen in TNG: "The Quality of Life." These were beachball-sized, hovering, utility robots designed to "learn" and "adapt" as they completed tasks. However, their inventor, Dr. Farallon, inadvertently made them "too" capable of learning; the robots were able to develop sentience over time, much in the way droids seem to in Star Wars. It wouldn't be until LD: "No Small Parts" that the Exocomps appeared again, this time represented by recent Starfleet Academy graduate Ensign Peanut Hamper. She apparently picked her name using a mathematical formula. Interestingly, Ensign Hamper references having a father (likely not Dr. Farallon, as she was female), and claimed to have only joined Starfleet to anger him. Dialogue in the same episode from Ensign Tendi also suggests that she, Hamper, was one of the first Exocomps in Starfleet. The last flying race, that I can think of, are the Elaysians from DS9: "Melora." This is also the species that cannot fly, or even move much, in environments with more gravity than their native G. Though appearing similar to most humanoid races, they are capable of something very resembling flight under the exceedingly low-gravity conditions present on their home planet. In alpha canon, we have only ever seen one Elaysian, Ensign Melora Pazlar, who used a type of mechanical exoskeleton and a wheelchair incorporating anti-grav tech to get around in standard 1G environments. Anyway, I agree that I wish we had seen some more Jem'Hadar development in DS9. I suspect that the writers did what they could, and we will have to wait for another series to explore them more. I suspect Discovery would be best-suited to do so, as a great deal of time has passed, and the show can easily go anywhere in the galaxy for its stories.

I think we're very close to the time when things like a race of asexually-reproducing female aliens can be a thing in mass-market sci-fi without it being made weird. Close, but not there yet. To be fair, there is nothing wrong with a character making it weird, so long as they're shown the error of their ways, in some form. Turn it into a reflective moral lesson on the male gaze. That would be a good step forward, but I'm very glad it wasn't attempted on DS9 back in the 90's.

If it's specifically stated in the show that they are all male, then you have to assume an origin with two or more sexes, if they had been grown from scratch they wouldn't be considered male as they would have no sex.

I was only able to find in browsing through your channel after seeing your krogan video. Loved that too btw.
Glad you enjoyed it! I may try that, but there's no guarantee adding "Jem'Hadar" to the title would actually increase its reach in the algorithm. Jem'Hadar is in the tags, for what those are worth. And as far as the hashtags in the top of the description, as I've said before, only the first three actually show up in the video description as it's displayed publicly. So my priority with those should be to make them as broad as possible. Using more generic language in the titles can actually be beneficial as when the video lands on the recommendations of someone outside the Trek fandom, they can be more intrigued than if they see a bunch of keywords that are specific to the Star Trek fandom. That's why I don't have (Franchise Name) in the title of all my videos, because my goal is to reach as many people as possible. That said, I was actually thinking about going through and redoing a bunch of my titles again. Adding the species name might help, but we'll see. It's UA-cam's job to promote it.

Incorrect. The Gem'hadar themselves canonically stated that they indeed needed to eat. What was probably meant about not eating, show wise, is that they don't need it often or can go long stretches so long as they're also getting the White. From the episode Hippocratic Oath.
I have a little bit of head canon that the Jem' Hadar are actually the replacements for the Hurq. I feel like the Hurq were the first enforcer species but they rebelled. Thus the ketricel addiction. It fits with the Klingon lore too. It would explain why the Hurq are only in the history books as the Jem' Hadar we're sent to erase the Founders mistake and make an example.

Population control would need to be in effect to let us "grow" people at whim. When we get to that stage. That will sadly affect couples wanting to have children through natural means. The Jem'Hadar are basically weapons of war. Though DS9 tried to give them human qualities in a few episodes. So to grow more of them makes logical sense.
What was the episode name and season with the young Jem'Hadar. I always love the episode when the Jem'Hadar are "stranded" on a planet with Bashir and O'Brian. The first is trying to weed them off the failsafe drug.
Bred for battle, as strong as multiple humans, embedded intelligence so they know tactics and all relevant battle knowledge from birth, fully mature in a matter of days, train their whole lives, ultra loyal, perpetually on drugs, and still get knocked out cold for minutes to hours at a time by a single star trek style double fisted punch to their gut from a species that is considerably weaker. Yup, that's trek.
I believe those are Alpha Quadrant Jem’Hadar. Klingons head bunt in close quarters. Since they would have fought more Klingons hand to hand. Here’s a cut and paste from Memory Alpha The Alphas were Jem'Hadar who were created in the Alpha Quadrant in 2374, after the Dominion realized that no reinforcements could come through the Bajoran wormhole.

i have a question, if the dominion petty much has near or total control of the gamma quadrant, than what or who have the Jem'Hadar being dying to with such attraction that even before the war for the alpha/bata quadrant that 20 year olds are a rareity and 30 year olds are mythical in their rarity. i can understand why they'd start suffering these losers during the dominion war but what was coarsening that attrition rate before. encounters with borg raids? some as yet unknown faction or factions with in the gamma quadrant that have being able to hold the dominion off?

I have a little bit of head canon that the Jem' Hadar are actually the replacements for the Hurq. I feel like the Hurq were the first enforcer species but they rebelled. Thus the ketricel addiction. It fits with the Klingon lore too.
It would explain why the Hurq are only in the history books as the Jem' Hadar we're sent to erase the Founders mistake and make an example.

i have a question, if the dominion petty much has near or total control of the gamma quadrant, than what or who have the Jem'Hadar being dying to with such attraction that even before the war for the alpha/bata quadrant that 20 year olds are a rareity and 30 year olds are mythical in their rarity. i can understand why they'd start suffering these losers during the dominion war but what was coarsening that attrition rate before. encounters with borg raids? some as yet unknown faction or factions with in the gamma quadrant that have being able to hold the dominion off?
With all the discussion of the technology, you fail to mention how creation of something like the Jemhadar is moral abomination and crime against all sentient beings.
