Grants original video on sugar rockets was the first video I ever watched on this channel (right back when it was first uploaded) and still remains my favourite of all time! Please can you keep doing more videos like this because I feel like the channel has drifted a long way away from what it used to be with Grant and feels too much like a full production company now. Would be good to do more crazy small scale sceince projects and low budget diy builds...I'm pretty sure others would agree with me too?
This video makes me super happy. I used the original design to win the State science fair 3 years in a row, and this video feels like a beautiful commemoration to Grant.
I remember watching the original video and trying it out, could never seem to get it to work, but I also wondered if a two stage rocket was possible. Thank you for making this.
As a Veteran Air Force Rocket Fuel Handler I found this video really fun to watch. I used to work with UMDH hydrazine and N2O4 nitrogen tetroxide. These were extremely dangerous and poisonous chemicals that we worked with in amounts in the tens of thousands of gallons. I would love to spend a day in this guys garage.
My grandfather recently passed away. He spent 30 years at nasa working on the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and shuttle program. He would have loved this video.
I have found that some of the powdered sugars I've bought seems to be cut with seems to be corn starch, and therefore won't burn as hot, reducing thrust. A friend told me to grind up some pure granulated sugar into a fine powder and try that. My thrust test stand even indicated better performance! Great video!
A better option is to dip news paper in a solution of nitrate and chorate oxidising salt at a certain ratio to water. Once the newspaper laden with the oxidising salt solution are dried , it can be rolled up into a tube and insert into into the rocket tubular body. The advantage of paper over sugar is it is lighter and cheaper than sugar. I have built multiple stage rocket during my childhood days. By the way great videos. Remind me of my childhood days.
Thank you Kennen. Please visit again soon. Or make a few remote videos (upgraded yogurt maybe?). I don't want this to be cameos. I want Kennen as a recurring co-host (and recurring only because he lives in Chicago otherwise regular co-host would've been nice). But the Kennen season with the backlog created during that last visit was definitely fun while it lasted. I miss Kevin too.
I am amazed at how well these "sugar" rockets performed. Looks like the engines were the same as Estes engines in their burn abilities. And I know theirs are black powder designs... Thumbs Up!
I did something like this, oh about 40 years ago, only I used 12 gauge shotgun casings and cooked sugar candy fuel poured around a 1/8" screw which is later removed. On top of this was a Whistling Pete firework to provide even more entertainment. Though the Whistling Pete worked better with Estes D size booster, with a C motor as the 2nd stage. These were taped to bamboo garden stakes.
You can use pictures couplings and cut them down one of each size and they fit into each other to make a half to 3/4 adapter. They also sell adapters so you don't need to shave the 2nd stage down
I remember studying space in science class in 8th grade and we built rockets from paper towel rolls and used a "hollowed" egg for the nose cone. After that we were offered extra credit if we built a rocket (bought from Hobby Store or not) and bring it in and launch it on our field day. I needed the extra credit so I did it. I loved building my rocket, but had some kind of failure on the launch and the engine broke free and shot up inside the body of the rocket where it proceeded to start burning. LOL I still got my extra credit though.
So glad the smoke from California was finally gone when you all filmed this. Made for a much better video. I couldn't even see the mountains when I was headed through there earlier in September.
Neat! Your vid popped up in my feed and I had to watch. My model rocketry phase came and went 40 years ago may Estes be praised. My first project was a $16 kit I purchased at the Huntsville Space and Rocket museum. The 3.5 foot tall Saturn V. Took a couple of months to put that thing together. And I mean I worked hard on it. Built my launch 'rocket box' with lights, switches, the works. But...I knew about the sugar stuff 50 years ago. My friend BooBoo told me about it. Only my mix was 3 to 2 with regular sugar. Tried cooking with water. What a plastic mess and it spewed less. Ha! Back then you could get the PN at the corner drug store. Yep, still had those things then. My stuff only spewed, of course. I never quite made the leap in logic to using it for rocket propellant.
Imo if you heat the propellant mix into putty like material you should have more consistency in the motors. You want to avoid pockets of air or inconsistent mixed fuel. Also adding a burn rate catalyst such as red iron oxide or sulfur can yield better motors

Congrats on the win
Nobody mentioned that this feels like an original TKOR vid like the ones that grant made
Don't show this to North Korea. It will set them forward by about a year
Bruh they have hypersonic missiles how are these things gonna help them. They just launched their Hwasong-8 hypersonic nuclear missle 4 days ago.

Taking the randomizer rocket to the next level, Grant would approve.
Been here since 2012, I don't watch as frequently anymore but it's good to see upgrades to the grant originals.
The best episode in a long time
I still remember his original one.

Oh yes me too,
Did yours also ignite but not take off?
@@Softe yeah, I'm fairly sure it was due to the nozzle size or moisture in the KNO3 but i haven't had the time to test it yet...

wow the last launch was incredible!
Independent variable: How many parts are in the rocket.
Dependent variable: How it flies
Controlled variable: The pipes
I remember learning about that in like 7th grade lol
@@SnickersEatsCookies well it is basic science
I'm loving all the videos with kennen. He picks interesting topics and has a very approachable way of going about the projects.
When was he introduced
Yeah when was he
Oop I found it his first video is Can Caulk Hold A Person To The Celling
Doubt he does anything other than act in the videos...
You mean black nate?

Wonder how spinning sugar in those sugar cone machines would work.

It’s good to have Kennan back, he’s great in front of the camera
I remember watching the original rocket motors when he posted this. RIP
finally it feels like i am watching a TKOR video i am sooooo happppyyyyyyyyyy
The two of yours reactions are WAY better than the rocketry. Well done and thanks for sharing. :-)
cute
Keep with this content instead of the over the top BS Nate does and ill start watching again.
THIS is the kind of content I fell in love with by TKOR
They would rather watch someone else do it than doing it themselves
I’d like to see this combined with the colored smoke videos from the past.
In the words of Jebediah Kerman: "needs more boosters"

I love this video! I’m glad your finally making things, not just doing garbage experiments

Last week we launched Landsat 9 and we are all so happy it didn't have the same fate as Landsat 6. Yeah, we are all happy when everything works.
Now THAT'S the content I have been looking for.
Doug over here killin it
You should put a little bit of those collored smoke bals powder in the rockets, like different collors for different stages so its realy visable
Lovely thanks! Nicely explained! Kind attitude without posturing: rare and valuable these days!
Perfect recreation of my favourite TKOR video of all time!
Finally I made it. I am so happy. 😄😄

Love that built off of Grants design. Great job TKOR

friction fit of those would keep them from separating. You would still need to sand down the tube.
You should have tried a 3/4 coupling on the top of the first stage with the top of the coupling cut down and used 3/4 second stage with minor bevel.
My dad introduced me to TKOR when I was 6, we made so many of his products together
Now I want to watch October Sky again, kind of ironic that this came out in October too lol

No film was used so... No filming 👍
The great thing is that i just got into model rockets in the last week and have been looking at grants old videos and this just came out
I too tried to make a 2 stage rocket but now I can because of this video
Painting or decorating the rockets is not a trivial task. It makes them easier to photograph and see in real time.

Sugar has as much energy density as gasoline! Awesome.
I want to make an engine that runs on sugar, for drones. This will make them safer to use.

Make the core hollow. Fill the core with something that will ignite the sugar core all at once.
