How to put a welding machine together just in 15 minutes. Salt water welding

  • Danger!
    Electric shock risk. All charging parts are under the voltage of 220 volts. Do not touch the electrode. All of what is performed in this video is performed under the supervision of professionals.
    There are times when you need to weld something, but the welding machine isn't within easy reach. What should you do then? There is a way out! You can make it by yourself! For this you do not need any complex components and experience.
    So, for making it you need: a cord with an electrical connector, a water container, some water, some salt, two metal leafs and actually a welding electrode. So, lets fill the glass can and add two table spoons of salt. Let's attach each cord to each metal leaf. Let's dip the metal leafs into the salt solution. By changing the depth of metal leafs' immersion we can change the welding electrode's current intensity from 10 to 160 amperes. So, let's connect the cord of the first metal leaf to the welding electrode and the second one to the phase conductor of 220 volts. Let's connect the neutral conductor to the part we are going to weld. In order to indicate where gas is and where it's neutral in the circuit without an indicator we just need to apply the cord to the ground and let's see what cord will sparkle having made a contact with the ground. the one which sparkles is the one which is a phase conductor.
    But this scheme has its cons:
    1. - the welding electrode and some details are under phase voltage, that's why you should be doubly careful.
    2- High energy consumption, if your bad power supply it may cause voltage drops in your neighbors' power supply.
    3.- supply system overload. If your supply system isn't designed to conduct high current , it's better to connect it indirectly.

    Quicker alternative:
    Step 1 - Hold out finger.
    Step 2 - Stick in electrical socket.
    Step 3 - Cook until crisp on outside or a nice golden brown.
    Step 4 - Memorial service.
    Step 5 - Surviving relatives call in professional welder to complete job.

      100 years ago, this was actually the most common way to get a high temp torch on the cheap. the salt solution is a resistor, so controls current flow (if you use table salt, it also produces chlorine gas, so don't). it makes a pretty lousy welder (all voltage, not much current, so lots of dig without good puddles), but a superb supply for a carbon arc torch (5000 degree f flame), or an air/carbon cutting rig (not the same thing, lol). it's about as dangerous as an electric hotplate, so long as you have decent construction standards. use washing soda or borax as your solution salt, and an ohm meter will allow "setting ranges" for any concentration of solution you use, by using ohms law (volts equals amps times ohms). small 110 v examples can power a torch capable of hot flames of pin proportions, so long as the torch is designed right, and the operator has a bit of skill. just NEVER hook it up to a bus in you box, always work off a breaker of fuse protected circuit

    • @vivantstudiosi

      +ludditeneaderthal it being the standard way 100 years ago does not make it safe.

    This current regulator generates chlorine gas as a viewer has noted it.
    Poisoning is expeted so air blow to outdoor is recommended.
    It does not generate chorine gas if sodium hydroxide is used.
    Risk care is reduced to explosive reaction.

    • @ericklopes4046
      @ericklopes4046 5 років тому

      Add a FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER and get yourself a hydrogen "generator", a highly explosive gas. Use stainless steel plates as + and - electrodes and get Oxygen totally free, another totally explosive gas. And that's not all! Add aluminium to the solution to boost your reaction, plug valves to mix O and H to get violent explosions! Careful with hydrogen embrittlement.
      Only recommended if you're a professional or your country is a former member of the Soviet Union.

    I am an apprentice trained electrician, qualified to degree level in electrical engineering am a chartered engineer (MIET, CEng), and also teach physics and electrical engineering in schools and colleges. This is absolute lunacy and a sure fire way of a) killing yourself, and b) destroying the wiring in your house due to the currents involved. The resistance of the salt water solution will change (lower) as the current increases, causing the welding current to increase and lower the resistance way off from its DC resistance as measured on a multi-meter. It really pisses me when the un-initiated mess with electricity like thinking they are clever. What a bloody clown!

      you have 2 legs from the breaker box, a hot leg, a neutral leg. the neutral leg is your "welding ground" (gets clamped to your work). the hot leg (from a breaker) goes to one plate of the water resistor. the other plate is wired to your electrode holder. the water resistor is what basically creates your load, drawing according to ohms law (220 volt with 10 ohms resistance, 22 amp draw). it's actually a very poor power source for welding (it works, but gives poor results), but excellent for arc cutting, or for making carbon arc torches. by using different salts, concentrations of solution, and plate depths and separation distances, you vary the resistance, and thus the amperage delivered. use of table salt (calcium chloride) WILL produce chlorine gas as it "boils", so maybe washing soda, baking soda, or vinegar solutions would be better choices (or at least stay to the windward side of the resistor, lol)

    Before doing this, try to learn electricity first, from teachers or google and UA-cam. Understand on how to prevent electrocution. Understand between conducter and insulation, and the voltage, flow of current and resistance. Rubber glove is important. Separation between positive (live) and negative (neutral) wires are important.
    Mcb for circuit breaker is better than fuses. Maybe that type of welding can be use for a short time in emergency cases.

      on second thought I probably can't get high enough current to weld without triggering the breaker, really need some sure of transformer to get from 230v low current to lower voltage high current

    hey guys,in a 200V to 240V system, this is extremely dangerous,I personally have ever experienced severe electric shock and I don't want anyone to pass through same so I recommend not to try but if you must for curiosity sake, ensure the environment isn't damp and that your hands are not moist plus insist on putting on latex or rubber protective gloves and shoes

    is this exactly like a normal welder? It will kill you if you touch the end, correct?

    • @Andrew-sc7hm
      @Andrew-sc7hm 9 років тому

      Andrew Busse Oh, didn't watch until the end.

    • @juliap.5375
      @juliap.5375 8 років тому

      +Andrew Busse if just touch - no, it not kill (or you need very weak organism/heart/be a kid). But if you decide to grab the end with hand - you will die (in that situation your muscles reduced and you already can't release the cord, so you continue and continue getting electric shock).
      I touch 220v, it was very painfully, but nothing serious.
