Cool. I was about to buy one for my summer cottage, but thought it may be easy to cobble something together from scrap. This is certainly it, there are lots of discarded ovens around. I'll make myself a new welder. Just add a bridge rectifier, welding with AC is a right pain.
By the way, your beads are actually not bad for a guy who have had no welding tuition or training. Doesn't look like stacked rubles, but they do look solid enough. Well done, Sir !

Remember: MOTs are designed to be on, UNDER LOAD ONLY. Please don't leave plugged in/turned on unless your ready to use them. Do not leave plugged in WITHOUT A LOAD....in a microwave oven, the MOT is excited when you hit that START button/knob, switches on high power relay, etc.

nice video I tried to follow along with it and bought a used MOT, the seller connected ac voltage to the primary winding (thin wire side). And it created humming sound. At home I removed that side and when I connected ac to the secondary side it created smoke and smell and became very hot to touch. Seems like the Secondary was already short? What you say?
Also Now can i rewind it using suitable size enameled wire? Will winding it with slightly thinner wire be ok for spot welding? Current winding is using 0.9mm enameled copper wire and the length and breadth of cross sectional area is 15 by 17 mm..

If you burned your eyes to short time exposure to the Arc, then slice a Potato and wear them over your eyes. The natural iodine will help. If you want to stay up then wear a shade #5 Len's. Good to see you protected your eyes as arc eye hurts for Around 24 hours, like having sand in your eyes and there's no cure.......... a professional welder. Besides that, love the channel guys

What if you would put 80 turns of wire and at 50 60 70 and 80 you loop the wire out of the transformer and back in continuing winding. Then you can put 4 outputs with different voltages. What about ten 40 amp rectifiers in parallel on the output? You are welding with AC now. Love your idea good for here in Africa. White Lion

Can someone explain how the twirl outs work for controlling power?

    • @stephenrosenthal5252
      @stephenrosenthal5252 3 роки тому

Let's say I have an insulated wire that I wrap around an iron core 120 times. Let's say I apply 120 volts to the end of that wire. Let's say that I measure the voltage at the very other end of that wire and I get one volt.
These numbers are very highly unlikely. But it works for what I'm trying to explain.
The reason you get one volt at the other end after the voltage has traveled along the entire length of the wire which we established was 120 rotations around an iron core is because of a principal known as voltage drop sometimes referred to as line loss. Line loss happens all the time with all voltages when they travel long distances through wire.
Now let's say after 60 rotations around the iron core you have a bit of that wire accessible for you to tap on to. You would now measure 60 volts at that tap point.
The reason these taps are so important is not for the variable in volts that you get but the corresponding amperages to those voltages.
If I have that same hundred and twenty volts which is a standard outlet in America on a 20 amp breaker. 20 amps is what it takes for that voltage to trip the breaker. But at 60 volts I can run 40 amps to trip the breaker. At 30 volts I now get 80 amps. And finally at 12 volts I would get 200 amps before my 20 amp breaker would trip.
There are some other things that go into it like the actual impedance on a transformer. Power factor etc. But now I think you get the gist. What you are looking for is not so much the voltage but very high amperage to be able to weld. Very thick metals require high amperages because the arc will be very hot at high amperages and thinner metal requires lower amperage as to not burn and blow holes right through the metal. All welders you buy at the store have adjustable amperages so you can get the perfect weld. The dial on the welder allows you to tap the transformer at different windings

In America that copper you used for your winding would probably cost at least $200 I bought 15 feet of 4 gauge stranded wire the other day and it cost me almost $40 USD

No, it's not that pricey. 35mm2 cable is sufficient for this purpose. You shouldn't pay more than around $5for 3ft of that.
He was winding way too many windings onto his transformer, hence the output voltage being far too high. You'd be looking at maximum $20, if you want to buy brand new cabling.

@@thefreedomguyuk have you seen the price at tractor supply lately..? Copper scrap is at a 10 year high and seemingly has affected shelf prices quite a bit. 15 feet of 4g was 36$

What do you call that kind of wires?

2 different sticks give different results.
rutile:the fix anything stick, rutile is most versatile stick of all
Base:the best to use if you know the metal composition, low hydrocarbon
Cellulose: has better rust protection, high hydrocarbon
