He totally destroyed his voice transitioning from glam metal to groove metal. Listening to recent recordings of this and Cowboys from Hell is pretty painful.
@@GoldTop57 Obviously not what I'm saying. I'm saying since the time he recorded songs like Cemetery Gates and Cowboys from Hell songs like Walk and This Love have destroyed his vocal cords.
@@nim4464 That doesn't matter, he was still carrying on the old sound by hitting those incredible high notes that glam metal is known for, but the two sounds just can't coexist forever.
This song is about a guy who is contemplating suicide in order to reunite with his dead girlfriend because he passes by the cemetery everytime he steps outside. In general, it is just a song about longing for a loved one who passed away. The 'reverend' in the song is whoever you turn to for guidance but fails to give you the kind of answers you are looking for. Vocalist, Phil Anselmo plays the reverend in the video. The guitarist is (Dimebag) Darrell Abbot and yes, he was shot and killed by a fan who blamed him for the breakup of Pantera while playing for Damageplan in 2004. The drummer is Vinnie Paul, his brother who saw him get shot on stage. Darrell did not survive his wounds and Vinnie passed away due to his own medical conditions 14 years later in 2018.
The last part about the shooting is a bit of an exhageration though. Nathan Gale who was the shooter was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was on medication that wasn't strong enough. He appearantly had dillusions that Pantera were stealing his lyrics and went mad because of it. In all honesty though, nobody really knew what was going through his head as he had a serious mental condition that probably could've been handled appropriately if not for his doctor who was probably the real menace in this all.
@@S1RLANC3 Wow, I did not know ANY of that. I was just going off of what I remembered from my college days. One of the great things about an art school is that there were plenty of heavy metal fans like myself. Several of us in my design class were absolutely crushed when we found out that day.
@@JMulvy I found out about it in my Highschool History class. I've heard stuff from them before but that's what sadly got me truly going down the rabbit hole.
My favorite song from Pantera is called This Love.... you definitely need to check that one out too!!! I don't listen to Pantera as much as I used to, mostly cuz every time I do I remember what happened to Dimebag Darryl (I saw another member explained that he was killed.) I remember watching on MTV News the video of Dimebag being murdered right on stage while playing- you couldn't see anything graphic but you could see what happened pretty well and I was a teenager. It was so sad. Like when John Lennon got killed by an obsessed fan - same thing with Dimebag. Somebody was mad that he left Pantera and killed him on stage in front of his fans. RIP Dimebag💙💙
Dime was shot and killed in Columbus Ohio at Alrossa Villa night club while he was performing with his and his brothers new band Damageplan. On December 8th 2004, Damageplan was on the final stretch of shows on the club tour when Nathan Gale a former Marine and mentally ill individual. Nathan was accusing Dime as being the reason Pantera split up and was no longer a band. When Nathan Gale snuck in through an unlocked door to the club he rushed on stage and fired several shots hitting Dime in the head I believe 3 times at point blank range. Meanwhile Dimebags brother Vinnie Paul was playing drums and witnessed the murder of his brother on stage. I was supposed to attend the show that night but was very ill, and gave my ticket to a friend and he attended the show instead. I live in Cincinnati Ohio a mere 90 minutes from the club in question. One of only 2 people (unrelated to me) that I shed tears for upon their death. The world lost a fantastic guitar player and a truly great person. He only cared about his fans and the music he created, he lived every minute of his life for those two things and he did not care about nothing else. He was a prankster and a genuine human being. R.I.P. Dime you forever will be missed.
Dime was the nicest guy ever too. I've heard stories about how he'd give guitar clinics at local music stores while on tour and he'd buy guitars and musical equipment for local kids. He was so classy he did it without the kids knowing he bought it. Why? Because he didn't want the kids to feel embarrassed that their fathers couldn't afford it and it was him that was paying for it. RIP Dime you LEGEND.🤘
This actually my favorite Pantera song. (As a huge fan) Walk is great but the vocals, riffs, and melodic changes and lyrics put this one at my #1 for Pantera.
Dimebag and his brother Vinnie (drummer) both passed. Pantera currently tours with Zack Wylde (ozzy guitarist) and Charlie Benante (Anthrax drummer)... still killing it !!!!! RIP Dimebag and Vinnie !
Played Pantera yesterday outside while my kids were playing and my daughter was outside screaming lyrics to 'Walk'.... ahahaha! So just as my father showed me Metallica and I remember being 4 years old outside singing them, now my daughter gets to grow up singing my hard music... ahahaha! And the metal cycle repeats...
shouldve done the album version, the intro goes longer and there is a little "battle" of sorts between phil the vocalist and dimebag the guitarist where phil sings matching his guitar pitch, its a 7 minute long song. phil also cant sing like this anymore
Agreed, the intro on the album version just makes the song so much better, the guitar on it is amazing and really adds a little depth when they transition into the chuggy riffs
Great story I took my daughter to see him probably 30 years ago in Grand Prairie TX and I had played him so much around the house she knew all the words. So here I am up by the stage with a little girl on my shoulders singing along with Chris. He kept waving and grinning like a proud parent because a little girl knew his songs.
Don't worry about looking stuff up on your phone.. the metal community appreciates the deep dives.. My man, please look at StoneSour - looking at you through the glass..
Corey really didn't care for the two Stone Sour songs that were radio hits. I saw them live and the first thing Corey said when he walked on stage was let's get this shit over with so we can rock this shit. They played those two songs first then they ripped that shit
Likely been said already but Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul died yrs later after the bs pos shooting that ended with the death of his brother Dime as well as bodyguard Mayhem & don't recall atm, 2 or a few crew members.(ALL OUR BROTHERS) Unfortunately tho that nite, PANTERA the band died..really. Tho PANTERA the experience, the fans the idea did not nor will ever die. I am still as moved by the groove of PANTERA as I ever was & believe no other can do it the same. Close but..nope. Also the shooting happened on my Bday which has since attached heartache/resentment & extremely angry anger to my bdays. PANTERA, commited fans know, was a family like no other band especially in this genre, created & always gave 110% towards it all. RIP all fallen members, fam & fans of PANTERA. I miss y'all as much as I ever did & always will. Phil, please get back up & get it. U R our link to missing & forgotten memories as well as new experiences that which mite not be exactly the same as old ones, but could be as rewarding, most excellent, also overdue closure & a shout out that maybe you & much of us need. Knowing or unknowingly. Were PANTERA fans. And us true ones still think of you & Rex often. Miss you, need ya as much as I think you do as well. Remember when that new level of confidence was new to you & what you all may or may not have promised yourself or others at that time. Go back to basics, safer living, longer living with the fam who is ALWAYS there for you. Ok point made several times several ways ✌
There's just something about the lines "You left me. Incomplete" that always hit me hard. It's like he's referring to the void left in your soul when you lose someone important to you.
Need to listen to the album/studio version, the music video cuts the intro out completely to cut the run time down. The intro is essential imo because of the contrast/build up
Dimebag Darrell was murdered on stage by a former Marine because he believed the band stole his music. Shot Dimebag, point blank, in the back of the head. Dimebag didn't see it coming. I was in Iraq when it happened. RIP Dimebag and Vinny.
Metal heads have more incidence of feeling happier, able to face negative emotions, and more resilient, most of the best metal songs are about facing trauma and facing the hardest things. Definitely the most essential genre for me, like a soothing balm, and Pantera is god level in lyrics and musical mastery. In a crises I would absolutely choose metal heads to survive with, they're usually the nicest people, with guts. Totally misunderstood stereotype.
Yes you were correct the brother with the curly hair. Phenomenal guitar player. Yes I know that the long hair ruled as a band. Chicks loved long haired guys in a band. It was and should still be part of the criteria imo. His blue guitar is a relic, I forget who has one of his guitars and yes many love to use that style of guitar in heavy metal. Keeping the lights on 🤘🏻🇺🇸
Harpos grew up there 1984 till maybe 10 years ago suicidal tendencies and hed p.e. awesome show hung out with hed p.e. got my suicidal skate deck signed by all the guys in the band old dude now great memories thanks for bringing up harpos
Dimebag Darrell was buried in a Kiss coffin that was given by Kiss. He also was buried with one of Eddie Vanhalen's guitars. Him and his brother are legends.
This song was written about Phil Anselmo's (lead singer) female lover who died, now it's used as a remembrance of Dimebag (guitarist) and Vinnie Paul (drummer). Dimebag is the one with long curly hair that played the solo, you were right.
One of my first reaction channels I followed was a professional opera singer who is on the rock journey like you are. The look on her face is just as priceless when she hears the vocals we have been listening to all our lives.
One of my absolute favorites! My husky chills to Pantera and loves this song loud! He also loves This Love! Lol! We're a metal family, and Pantera is at the top of the list! BTW, Phil Anselmo has one of the best heavy metal singing voices out there!
This shows Phil’s range! I got introduced to Pantera way back in 1992. In my history class right after lunch in high school this dude who was known back in those days as a headbanger. He had his Walkman and a copy of Vulgar Display of Power and the song F@cking Hostile I was hooked. And in high school I was a band nerd so this was a big move for me. RIP Dimebag and Vinnie.
20 years ago this year. Dimebag was shot multiple times as he played lie on stage at Al Rosa Villa, Ohio, with his band Damageplan (that he and his brother Vinnue started AFTER Pantera split) where a deranged fan jumped the stage, shot Dime multiple times at close range then turned the gun on security and the crowd. His Brother Vinnie was the drummer and it happened right infront of him, he too passed a few years back due to heart complications.
Back in '93 I had the pleasure of spending a couple hours after a show with Dimes, Rex and Vinnie - 3 of the nicest coolest funniest guys i've met that was in a "big" band - they made sure everyone had beers, they made sure to spend time chatting away, Vinnie made a point as well as going round saying goodbye to everyone before he headed back to their hotel. Seriously down to earth people who loved to have fun but happened to make some amazing music together. Saw them a couple times over the years and they were one of the best live bands ever. RIP Dimes and Vinnie. Check out some stuff like "Floods", "Mouth For War", "I'm Broken", "A New Level", "Art Of Shredding" and "Heresy"...among many others!
I always felt this song. It always made me think of the friends I've lost along the way. My older brother had introduced me to Pantera. Then that MFer went and died on me, and this song had me balling😭, but it helped me get through my grief.
Oh you know Dime when you hear the guitar guys. His sounds can’t me replicated. His tone is one of a kind. And the signature harmonic Squeals 😌 I miss Dime so much. Vinny is also one of. A kind drummer he has his own unique technique and sounds as well he did a lot of badass riff. My favorite song from Pantera is Domination.
This one reminds me of my mom dying when I was 9 & I bottled all the pain inside. It actually brings a tear to my eye because it took me 30 years to actually cry & let it out. I swallowed all of it & it fucked me up much more than I thought about it.
You are correct about the venue. Pantera had broken up, and some of the members went on to form the band Damage Plan. A deranged fan who blamed Dimebag for breaking up Pantera showed up to the Damage Plan show with a gun and shot him dead on stage. His literal brother Vinny was the drummer and watched it happen. Vinnie has since passed as well from medical issues. Vinnie also played for the band Hell Yeah, which is also an amazing group.
You mentioned loving the song Walk I love the song to The story behind the song is, when the band finally came home from a huge successful tour, from the album Cowboy's from Hell, Phil, Darrel and the band noticed, and hearing that there long known friends where talking shit about them behind there backs, like success had gone to there heads, and they where not the same guys in the band anymore. So Phil basically told them if you have something to say Say it to my face punk Or get away ftom me, and Walk !
Greatest southern rock band ever!!!!! I saw Anselmo with Zach and other new band members recently in Kansas City. Pantera in concert has been on my to do since I was 16 I just hate that dimebag wasn't there too. RIP
This is my style. I grew up a total headbanger! I love all these different genres youve been doing. My favorite Pantera song is Walk. Knox just did that one. ❤❤
I was supposed to be at that show but I ended up having to work. It's in Columbus Ohio, and I'm from Cincinnati Ohio. Me and my buddy Ryan were supposed to go but I sold my ticket to one of our buddies. It was Dimebag's new band Damage Plan. The drummer from Pantera was also the drummer for Damage Plan. That was Dimebag's brother Vinnie Paul. He watched his brother get murdered! My dude was there for the whole thing. He called me while I was at work but I couldn't answer. His voicemail he left was fucking insane! I couldn't believe what I was hearing! It was a crazed fan pissed off about Pantera breaking up, so he went and shot Dimebag Darrell the lead guitarist.
You say underground and I remember seeing Pantera in Arlington before they were signed at a little hole in the wall 250 person venue they played. Then a year later seeing them in a stadium was mind boggling.
Also want to add, this song is off their first full debut album Cowboys From Hell. Phil really got into his groove with the album Vulgar Display Of Power (the one with Walk on it) and Dime's riffs were just so freakin chunky! Pantera had a HUGE part in me being the musician I am today. I have CFH (Cowboys From Hell) tattooed on my arm with Dime's guitar headstock on it. I ran a tribute site for Dime long long ago, and actually worked with Dime's long time girlfriend Rita Hainey. She wanted me to help out for Ride For Dime (a yearly event celebrating the life of Dime) but I had just had shoulder surgery and was unable to make it.
Fun fact most ppl don’t know or understand or ever really paid attention to it. But Vinnie plays the drums with the fat end of the sticks hitting the actual drums instead of the small end like every other drummer out there. That’s why he gets so much power out of the drums. He literally beats the fuck out of them.
Dimebag Darrell (guitarist) was murdered on stage with his band Damageplan (post Pantera after singer Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown had left) It was The Alrosa Villa in Ohio. Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah) passed recently of heart failure. Dime was murdered on stage along with 3 other people that tried to stop the gunmen. A police officer fired 1 shot killing the subject as he had a Damageplan staff held hostage after shooting him 3 times
This a great 3rd or 4th "introduction" to Pantera. You get the feel of the band with "Domination", particularly the Moscow live show, and "Walk". Those are the ones people usually hear first. You know they groove, they're heavy and most people can see how these guys have inspired bands ever since. Then there's this. "Damn, he can sing too?" And they're still grooving those riffs. I like that you have this connection with the band as well. Technically Dime and Vinnie weren't Pantera then. They were performing as Damage Plan when Dimebag got shot on that stage. That stage is hallowed ground for any metalhead.
This was always my favorite Pantera song because it was the bridge between 80's Glam and Power Metal Glamtera and 90's hard ass Groove Metal Pantera. The full version has a beautiful acoustic guitar part that was actually written and played by Rex Brown, the bass player, if I recall correctly
In thrash metal of that era, NOBODY could song like Phil Anselmo. Such range to his vocals, and such great growling screams as well. Dimebag was a top 10 of all time guitarists. Whole band, very talented.
It is still so upsetting to hear people talk about the way Darrell was taken during his prime. One of the most horrific things I could imagine, ESPECIALLY someone like Dime, to be shot down during a performance, it's just beyond comprehension. I grew up in the DFW when Pantera was coming up, seeing them perform at the local clubs like Joe's Garage, The Basement and Dallas City Limits. I will always be broken hearted about it. LONG LIVE PANTERA 🤘🏼R.I.P Darrell and Vinnie 🖤

1st off, you're a legend for posting all this . 2nd. Didn't he lose his wife? That wasn't part of what this song is about? You may have put this in the post but I had to skim it was so long! Haha sorry not a reader by nature.. but he even says . She left me... incomplete... all alone .. etc. No?
@@johnlombardo7816 Not about losing his 'wife'... It's about devastation after losing someone close.
If u can't read a post, how r u gonna get thru a book? 🤣
@@sumonjamal1653 I dont! hahaha, the only book i read at all is the Bible, and honestly I do better listening to it on tape.. my attention span is bad, i went down the line reading the comment and got lost about 4 times! sorry, i was trying to hang on I promise!! :/ .. appreciate ya nonetheless!
@@johnlombardo7816 The Bible is the most twisted collection of epic writings that even I can't even begin to start w/ what is relevant/ real or not.
If u can't keep up w/ my simple narrative of Pantera's career... how in the name of God can u make sense of the endless depictions of characters that r rooted in the realm of fantasy fiction... even on tape?
I'd get bored to death...💀
Yes , the Song ' Taking my life ' was it that time , ok , i'm 56 years old Metalhead
Pantera-Five Minutes Alone, you will really love that one
Not to mention the story behind it.
@@thumper8471 Exactly, so Hard Core. Phil is awesome
Every rocker came to Dime Bag’s funeral. Eddie Van Halen put one of his famous guitars in his casket. Dime was such a nice and sincere person. RIP
Old Pantera joke
Young Phil: He has a little grit in his voice
Older Phil: He has a little voice in his grit
He totally destroyed his voice transitioning from glam metal to groove metal. Listening to recent recordings of this and Cowboys from Hell is pretty painful.
@@emerje0 You’re saying he wrecked his voice around 1990? There was no glam on this album
@@emerje0 Phil was never in Glamtera
🤘🏼🥃
CEMETERY GATES is not about contemplating suicide or joining a loved one in the afterlife. Wikipedia sucks
Omg yes!!!!!!!! This love is a great song
You have to react to "Cowboys from Hell". It's a must!
“Revolution is my name” next. You won’t regret it at all. Amazing song.
Pantera “this love” is HARD
it is good, hollow is better
@@kirtfrank3458 eh
I'm Broken or 5 Minutes Alone is next!
I was introduced to Pantera in 1990 when their Cowboys from Hell album was released. Check out the Cowboys from Hell song/video.
Pantera is one of the best Metal bands of all time. And this is possibly their best song.
shouldve done the album version, the intro goes longer and there is a little "battle" of sorts between phil the vocalist and dimebag the guitarist where phil sings matching his guitar pitch, its a 7 minute long song. phil also cant sing like this anymore
Agreed, the intro on the album version just makes the song so much better, the guitar on it is amazing and really adds a little depth when they transition into the chuggy riffs
DimeBag is the Guitarist. The Drummer is his brother
The riff when this song gets heavy was my favorite riff for a long time. Completely badass.
So many songs you need to hear man.
A New Level..I'm Broken.....Drag The Waters
The Sleep by Pantera would be another awesome one for you to cover!... It's such a beautiful song... 💯💙
Don't worry about looking stuff up on your phone.. the metal community appreciates the deep dives.. My man, please look at StoneSour - looking at you through the glass..
And Inhale
Get back & bring back that level of music brothers, were still here for you waiting & ready with a doob, a Black Tooth Grin & and a cold one. Go back to basics, safer living, longer living with the fam who is ALWAYS there for you. Ok point made several times several ways ✌
One of the deepest tracks written and one of the most legendary 🔥🔥🔥👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
There's just something about the lines "You left me. Incomplete" that always hit me hard.
It's like he's referring to the void left in your soul when you lose someone important to you.
This is my favorite Pantera song, but "Cowboys From Hell" is a very close second.
Some of the most beautiful soft voices come from singers of heavy/ death metal
I love love love this song. My fav ballad after Dream On.
Every Rose Has Its Thorn, I Remember You, and Nothing Else Matters are good ballads too
Need to listen to the album/studio version, the music video cuts the intro out completely to cut the run time down.
I'm listening and waiting for their reaction to the end.
Phil Anselmo - singer
Dimebag Darrell - guitar player
Vinnie Paul - drummer
Rex Brown - bass
1990 Gen X was speaking and telling you life then .. so buckel up. Love his reaction and appreciate you hearing his song out TY
This is my favorite Pantera songs, this riff is one of the best ever written. 🤘🏻
Keeping the lights on 🤘🏻🇺🇸
RIP Dimebag. Inspired a whole generation of musicians, myself included. Hope he is shredding up there with the rest of the legends we lost.
Harpos grew up there 1984 till maybe 10 years ago suicidal tendencies and hed p.e. awesome show hung out with hed p.e. got my suicidal skate deck signed by all the guys in the band old dude now great memories thanks for bringing up harpos
I grew up next to them. Used to party with them in the 80's before their International fame, & after. R.I.P. DIME, & VINCE 🙏 🕊 🕊 🎸 🥁
Dimebag Darrell was buried in a Kiss coffin that was given by Kiss. He also was buried with one of Eddie Vanhalen's guitars. Him and his brother are legends.
Great band gonna try to go see them at Soldiers Field this year.
Do it! Worth the price of admission
This song was written about Phil Anselmo's (lead singer) female lover who died, now it's used as a remembrance of Dimebag (guitarist) and Vinnie Paul (drummer).
Dimebag is the one with long curly hair that played the solo, you were right.
Rip dime bag Darrell and in my opinion Pantera is one of the metal bands that will stand a test of time it's 2024 and it still sounds good
One of my first reaction channels I followed was a professional opera singer who is on the rock journey like you are. The look on her face is just as priceless when she hears the vocals we have been listening to all our lives.
I love it when those "professionals" first hear Dio or Rob Halford and their jaws drop.
RIP Dimebag & Vinnie ❤, you both may be gone but you will FOREVER be missed & NEVER be forgotten!!!!
One of the 5 greatest, and inflential metal bands of all time
RIP dimebag and RIP vinny! loved hearing this again. i got back to 25 years ago.
Pantera's entire catalog is 🔥 🔥 🔥
One of my absolute favorites!
RIP Dime and Vinnie both were amazing musicians and just wonderful human beings dude react to I'm broken
You mentioned loving the song Walk
I love the song to
The story behind the song is, when the band finally came home from a huge successful tour, from the album Cowboy's from Hell, Phil, Darrel and the band noticed, and hearing that there long known friends where talking shit about them behind there backs, like success had gone to there heads, and they where not the same guys in the band anymore.
So Phil basically told them if you have something to say
Say it to my face punk
Or get away ftom me, and Walk !
This love by Pantera is a good one
Greatest southern rock band ever!!!!! I saw Anselmo with Zach and other new band members recently in Kansas City. Pantera in concert has been on my to do since I was 16 I just hate that dimebag wasn't there too. RIP
First song I learned to play on guitar. Favorite song of all time.
One of the greatest heavy metal ballads ever! RIP Abbott bros! 🖤
Awesome reaction, i've been waiting for this one for a while, keep up the good work
THIS LOVE is amazing!
You say underground and I remember seeing Pantera in Arlington before they were signed at a little hole in the wall 250 person venue they played. Then a year later seeing them in a stadium was mind boggling.
Pantera this love another great song
It’s just BAD ASS! Case and Point!
I forgot to mention, I worked at Harpo's, for a couple yrs as a bouncer. My last concert was their 25th anniversary. Ronnie James Dio.
Dimebag was/is a legend. And the guitar solo in this song is ranked number 36 all-time guitar solos ever
Absolutely 💯 🔥
Masters at their art!
It happened at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, OH in December of 2004. In all 4 people were killed and 3 others wounded.
Pantera used to be a Glam Metal band long time ago, the range is quite huge
There's a longer version you should listen to. Saw these guys last weekend (minus those who've passed, obviously) and the atmosphere was insane.
You'll love Cowboys From Hell. 5 Minutes Alone and Broken are great too.
In thrash metal of that era, NOBODY could song like Phil Anselmo. Such range to his vocals, and such great growling screams as well. Dimebag was a top 10 of all time guitarists. Whole band, very talented.
Some other great ones from pantera This Love. I’m Broken. 5 Minutes Alone, Cowboys from Hell
Darrell and Vinnie abbott always in our hearts. RIP
My absolute favorite Pantera song
This record was my favorite by them he sang like this throughout it I believe it was his first record with them.
just watched your walk reaction, and this is a must, Now you can hear him sing
It is still so upsetting to hear people talk about the way Darrell was taken during his prime. One of the most horrific things I could imagine, ESPECIALLY someone like Dime, to be shot down during a performance, it's just beyond comprehension. I grew up in the DFW when Pantera was coming up, seeing them perform at the local clubs like Joe's Garage, The Basement and Dallas City Limits. I will always be broken hearted about it. LONG LIVE PANTERA 🤘🏼R.I.P Darrell and Vinnie 🖤
I was having chills while you were man. RIP Dime. \m/
12:50ish he puts the gum in his mouth!!! I love it!!!!
