For high end filmmaking, I would love to shoot with the ARRI Alexa 35 or the Sony Venice 2. But, in the meantime, I am more likely to lean to the FX6 or C70.
Ergonomics on the FX6 are the best out of all cinema cameras. The grip and the ability to put it on an arm extension for a shoulder rig set up is incredibly versatile.

Regarding the FX6 having "only" 7 stops of ND - it's plenty for 90% of shooting situations, and when it isn't I just have a good quality 4-stop nd on the lens for the duration of the shoot. This is hugely different from having to use a variable ND on the lens, with all the artefacting they produce. FX6 still wins here for me, because of the ability to dial in the exact ND needed.

I was a wedding/event shooter but was blessed to get into local tv work and have been making 77 episodes and 7 tv shows for the past 2.5 years. For me I prefer to stick with Canon. The C70 was the perfect camera for me when it released why? 1) it is a versatile camera, it can be full frame and be great in low light and be a crop sensor and get me that extra reach. A 300mm can become 480mm. It does make a difference. Full frame and shallow dof isn’t everything for me, it helps, but content is king. We would be shooting F4 most of the time tbh. But depending on the work, we do shoot f2 to f5.6 or even f8. (2) its size - try traveling as light as possible when you need to bring minimum 3-6 lights, 5-9 cameras and a bunch of tripods, cards, stands, etc. Furthermore you have everything on the body itself especially the nd filters. (3) the dynamic range. Usually for our work, because of schedule, pressure, etc, people make mistakes. But the C70’s dynamic range have saved my @$$ more times than I would admit. Especially because we have so many camera operators someone is bound to mess up at some point. (4) I already have 30+ canon lenses, both EF and RF. The lab test you showed claiming that the C70 has more dynamic range had noise reduction applied to the C70 since it is shooting in compressed rather than raw. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison

As a Canon and BM user Canons policy with the lenses is concerning. I'd really, REALLY want to get a C70 but Canon is making it really hard on both practical and principal level for me to want to invest any further into their ecosystem before seeing where all of this ends up.
Totally agree, don't know what Canon thinking. The EF mount is a wide open lens mount for almost every lens manufacturer, but they close the door on RF mount.
They recently announced that they will be opening their RF mount to other brands, but it looks like they will be strict about which brands to allow to produce third party lenses for the RF mount. My guess is they want a percentage from these companies instead of opening the mount for anyone.
Used Canon for over 10 years, and went with Sony FX6 instead. Sony is progressing in cinema, Canon disappoints me year after year. In the States almost everyone in broadcast uses Sony (if not Arri/RED) nowadays so that is the route I wanted to go for in my industry.
I'm new to your channel but your videos are very helpful in my buying decision and I am pretty well sold on the Canon C70. Hope to make that purchase in the coming weeks.
biggest downside I've noticed to the FX6 is mainly the size for traveling. You have to get pretty creative if you want to fit an FX6, a second camera, lenses for both and monitors for both (as well as any extras you need for shooting) into a single, flyable case. It's 100% possible (I've done it) but I'd imagine it's far more difficult than trying to fit the same kit with a C70. a small nitpick that still occasionally drives me crazy is that you can't stop the FX6 from writing 8 tracks of audio, even if 6 of them are blank and you've disabled any microphones from recording to those tracks. editing multiple video layers whenever each clip has 8 attached audio tracks is beyond annoying. it's a limitation of the internal codec Sony uses and sounds like a small gripe, but when you have to disable 6/8 audio tracks everytime you edit, it gets pretty old pretty quick.
good point. Yes, I can actually fit all of what you mentioned into a single backpack for traveling. And I didn't even know about the audio channels. Sounds annoying!
I do agree with the track audio, but that is not so annoying. When importing the clips on premiere, i just delete all the unused tracks, takes 30seconds.
@@Studio23creation again, not a deal breaker by any means but it is an extra step (that I find annoying) I don't see any reviews mentioning. thought it was worth putting it out there! I still love shooting with my FX6 and have zero regrets about making the purchase almost 2 years ago now 💥
Fortunately for me, I have both and more. This was good information, I pick up my Sony most of the time even more than my Red and Blackmagic cameras. But I do love my C70, it's so easy to use.
Great comparisons. I’ve honestly never been in a situation where I needed more than the 7 stops out if the fx6. And I live in Minnesota and sometimes shoot out in the snow during winter.
Hey another great video! Love the new consistency of outputting so much content! Regarding the last thought about having canon or Sony and the chances that the camera you have will decide will you get the job. From my experience in this level of cameras that it rarely matters. Usually it only matters if a client or a production company wants to have all the same cameras and then they chose one over another for that reasons. In higher productions that could matter but then we are talking a more expensive cameras and in that segment canon is less popular than RED, Alexa or Sony. But I never heard someone didn’t get a job for shooting with c70 or fx6. Most of DPs anyway don’t work on serious projects with their cameras since rental prices for RED and even Arri are not that terible.
Even those it’s not a fair comparison regarding price, the c300 and maaaybe a new c200 would really compare better to the FX6, so when I want the better ergonomics I reach for the C300, and damn is it a better design than the FX9 and FX6.
While the variable ND on the Sony is great, nobody mentions that it only kicks in at two stops - below that you have to disengage the ND. Shooting in the UK with cloudy, changeable weather, between 0-2 stops is where I would most like to have variable ND! Also I find the fact that you can’t change your ISO in Cine-EI mode in S-log3, very restrictive. So I end up stuck, needing to lower my exposure by a little, but having no ND option and no ISO option just at that point. It’s a pain! Why Sony are so restrictive with ISO’s in S-Log3 is beyond me, as BM doesn’t do this, nor Canon, to my knowledge. Would love someone to invent a variable ND between 0-2 stops as well as 2-6 stops - this would be a killer feature. Apart from that, I would get the Sony Fx6 over the Canon mainly because since the Fs7, people often ask to shoot on a Sony and never on a Canon - a shame, because I prefer the current Canon range overall, though it’s a close run thing.
Dear Damien, thank you for your great information. I have been using Canon since I was a student and I love its colors. But due to industry conditions, I think I will choose Sony. Greetings from Turkey
Docs and TV are dominated by Sony. Film not as much for sure. RED and ARRI rule.. although the Venice is starting to crush it for film.. where a FX3/6/9 can fill in the gaps as they match closer than all other cams to Venice.
Great video! Awesome job to bring it up all the important point of both cameras. For me Sony is a way to go, I did a lot of documentary and wedding videos, the body layout like a regular video camera is easy to hold for a day, also the auto ND is way too important for me, c70 ND is good but if your light is constantly changing like go in and outdoor, you will need to change the ND and see that ND drop in, that ruin the image. The last thing you mentioned, there are lot more business clients require SONY camera other than Canon, specially documentary, TV and commercial, and that is so true! So for me, the camera can make money for me is good camera, Canon is good but now is more like for small budget short film camera.

The fact that you can adapt almost any lens to the Sony E-mount is already a win IMHO. And the amount of built in ND in the Sony is plenty fine. I’m not shooting F1.2 at high noon open sun, that’s so 5Dmk2 era. There are some things I like about the C70, but I like way more on the FX6 which was why I bought it. I’m considering selling all my C70 and R5C kit to switch to FX6/FX3 Sony world and this video has kinda stumped me. What should I do. The one thing I have noticed is that I have been turned down for work quite a few times for it having Sony and never hired because I have Canon. I also shoot poker (shout out GGPoker) good to see who’s behind the camera for those vids 👌
@@damiencooper This is the big fight between the big japanese camera brands. There is always something to do to be better. Canon overtakes Sony on details. Sony will overtake Canon on details with the next generation.
I had both side by side and thought about selling the Canon for the Sony but decided to keep the C70. No point to have both. I'D rather have two of the same
Great video! What your grandmother told you, we in Dutch call quite literally “ant-fucking” 😂 Both camera’s are amazing and I feel at this point it is all more about personal preference and how it fits your personal shooting style. If you can’t produce great footage on one, you can’t do it on the other. No need for brand wars, both of them are awesome 🙏🏻
really good video, great insight. I'm trying to get a c70 for filming vlogs/recipe videos (i know it's prob a bit of overkill) and was wondering if you had some insight on a good setup?
I think that’s subjective. I am a Sony shooter and I would agree with you before 2020 and the latest generation of Sony cameras, that Canon had a distinct advantage in image quality. I’ve always admired Canon colors. And still do. Currently though, (Image wise) I think they’re both incredible and comparable. Side by side you can definitely have a preference but if you were to look at both images separately you would think both looked great. Sony’s color science has improved since 2020 (A7ISIII and after) but I still prefer the Canon colors.
depends on the lut he is useing i never got this bad image from sony and i own the c70 and the fx6 - he need to do this test with sony shooter that knows how to use this camera
Shocked to see you think C70 ND is better than electronic ND on FX6. Sure, you gave an example of shooting wide open in a hot desert mid day but how often do you do that? If thats all you do, then cool I guess. But for everyone else, the fact that we can keep the camera settings the same and auto expose to changing lighting conditions in a scene by using electronic variable ND is so much more useful than having 8-10 stop ND. Honestly, thats a game changer. With C70, if you choose an ND you cant change it without ruining the shot as the filter slides in and out of the shot. And it achieves 8-10 stops by stacking at a very noticeable drop in quality due to refraction. There's a reason why Canon calls them "extended" stop ND. Also, I didn't find the real life DR advantage I was looking for in C70 hence I sold it. I really expected more from the DGO sensor even though it comes with worse rolling shutter than FX3/FX6. They distribute the stops differently, so yes if you expose on Sony the same way as C70 you can think C70 has half a stop extra DR but when you expose them individually how they should be, they are pretty much the same and they're both good in that regard. If FX3/FX6 dynamic range is good enough Greg Fraser and Gareth Edwards to shoot a Hollywood sci fi, its safe to say we have nothing to complain about.
I'm really surprised people don't run out of ND more often. I shot multiple Interviews indoor wide open where I had to go to ND8. Outdoors in summer I'm never below ND8 even when not using a super fast lens.
Thanks for the your insights. I still can't decide. What do you think would be better for wildlife? The low light ability of the Sony is a big point to consider.
Axel, in case you haven't decided yet, the FX6 has 30-second cache recording (i.e. when you hit 'record' it saves whatever happened in the previous thirty seconds), which I would say is essential if you shoot wildlife. Used it a couple of times on deer and owls.
You should never want to do auto-ISO or exposure. Your lighting would be changing all over the place and your footage would be ruined as you’re baking in the light change of your footage. Stick to manual and learning to expose for highlights/shadows etc
I have rented the C70 several times and have learned to go by the waveform and IRE function and have been knocking ISO out da park. Then, I have recently set the native ISO to 800 now that I am shooting CLog 2 and Raw. Using the ND filters even inside and prime lenses has really helped. Even when I am running and gunning.
Very interesting comparison and conclusion! I thought you were ready to switch last week lol. I have to say I agree with all points except the Vari ND which is clearly superior to mechanical ND and for 90% situations 7 stops is enough. Yet despite the lens situations etc, I would also go for the C70 because I just prefer the color science, the native lenses, the DGO sensor, the codecs (RAW!) and the form factor. That being said I shoot Sony professionally all the time just because as you've said its become an industry standard. But for solo run & gun projects, I much prefer Canon.
I was confused by "Wir wollen ja jetzt nicht mal EU tun" - As a german, I never heard that term before. But i guess your grandma lived in the "Ruhrpott"? The area around Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg? Sounds like that :)
I am a dp and mostly shoot on Canon (because I own them) and Arris and I had to work with Sony 3 times. Honestly, I felt like they were stuck in the 2000s. Color science sucks, file format is a problem. It's personal, but I hate Sony Glass as well. And regarding NDs that is never a problem cause I never use them. I always go with a Mattbox anyway. I mean you need built in VNds for videography only. And I would strongly disagree with Sony's night performance. Low light is especially bad in Sonys.. way too much noise and color distortion on high ISOs

Hi Damien, mr mokeypixel, I had not thought about what you mentioned on new lenses not coming out for EF or RF. Truth be told Viltrox, Sigma, Tamron are crushing the new lens game both in FF and APSC. There are also a bunch of new Anamorphic lenses, are these not coming for EF-RF either?
As I understand it, Canon doesn't allow brands to produce RF lenses with AF. Manual, yes. So anamorphics are usually coming out in RF as well. However, you can't use the full frame RF lenses on the C70 with the speedbooster (or at least not full frame) So it is always hit and miss and keeps being complicated

I had the fx6 and it was difficult. I used the crane 3s gimbal, so gimbals were no problem for me, mics neither becaue i could leave the top handle on at all times and with the mic rubber thing you can get basically everywhere all mics fit ... BUT my biggest problem was 8bit long gop, no wifi image transmission ( with the fx3 i can simply give the client a tablet and they have a picture) more noise than the fx3, no audio in slowmo, the ultra shitty white balancing, catalyst browse is amazing but people are to stupid for that so they really need to make a free plugin version. And tbh since i use the ronin 4d the button layouts of all other cameras seem absolutely stupid. same goes for both the canon and the sony. the integration of video transmission ect. ... in my eyes i would not buy any of them the fx6 has too many flaws, and canon has that weird mount problem...
I still love shooting with my FX6 and have zero regrets about making the purchase almost 2 years ago now 💥
@@Studio23creation I think I never noticed as I am using final cut and the audio tracks don't even show up until you look for them
Fx6 primarily because of the lenses build and the auto VnD.
The C70 is more enjoyable to grade and travel with .
I can definitely see that. Except for the VND only being 7 stops
Both amazing cameras! I went with the C70 only because of Internal RAW
Fortunately for me, I have both and more. This was good information, I pick up my Sony most of the time even more than my Red and Blackmagic cameras. But I do love my C70, it's so easy to use.
What black magic cams do you have?

informative comparison of FX6 / C70 in 14mins.
With a matte box.. dropping in a 2 stop ND seems easy. I’ve personally never maxed out the Sony VND.
Great comparisons. I’ve honestly never been in a situation where I needed more than the 7 stops out if the fx6. And I live in Minnesota and sometimes shoot out in the snow during winter.
it's so weird. A lot of people say that. I sometimes shoot my youtube talking heads at 8 stops when the sun is hitting the background :D
Just the RF Canon lens situation is a no go! It's Crazy what Canon is doing with this..
It's business. Till their lineup of key lenses is complete they will not allow others
Top handle on sony is only an issue if you don't use timecode to sync audio... lol pros love fx6
Great video, I want a C90 - my made up full frame c70.
c80
They hate for stock top handles boggles me. Its there and you need it for audio for the sony line.
It’s interesting that you didn’t really mention the huge difference between the look of super35 sensor size vs full frame
I did. That’s why I compared the price tags with the speedbooster. As I use(d) the C70 95%+ with the speed booster
@@damiencooper when I say “look” I mean not just AF but depth of field
whoa! the Sony image looks very "digital" to me where the Canon looks more "filmic"
Dear Damien, thank you for your great information. I have been using Canon since I was a student and I love its colors. But due to industry conditions, I think I will choose Sony. Greetings from Turkey
Believe me , as a C70 owner in Philippines, 10 stops of NDF is a must...
Very helpful, thank you!
if some one only hires you if you have Sony... he doesn't understand cinematography and sony's marketing depatment did a great job on him.
Client demand is very realistic. Electronic VND is one and only under Sony. Lens ecosystem is another huge win for Sony.
Maybe you can now say, “This is Monkey Pixels, welcome to Damien Cooper” 😂
haha, that's a great idea :D
the more i look around i guess the r3 will become my first videocamera over the r5c and c70 but not for landscape photography where i still use my r5
What? Why? That’s my last choice!

sony fs5 was my dream camera still i started. i like the canon c200 more and c70 would be a dream B cam for it. ill prob grab sony fx6 for a reminder for me
The fact that you can adapt almost any lens to the Sony E-mount is already a win IMHO. And the amount of built in ND in the Sony is plenty fine. I’m not shooting F1.2 at high noon open sun, that’s so 5Dmk2 era. There are some things I like about the C70, but I like way more on the FX6 which was why I bought it. It’s proven to be the right move as I’m using Leica R glass which draw sublime images.
Sony A7iv vs Fx6 vs C70, which one should I buy for professional long term UA-cam videos like Mini Mr beast type ? 😅
Not the Iv for sure. Overheats and looks very digital, crops on 4k60 as well. But on a budget it’s not bad

Don’t know if it was already discussed but the graphic of de dinamic range shows data for the c300 mk iii not the c70

What would be the more affordable version of the c70?
Do you have a video about your experience on an Oscar-nominated doc coming??
as early as next week! ;) But it will probably not be the last video about it :D
Almost every documentary and even Sundance is done with Canon 200, 300, and 500 when you look at the published lists.
Well done, well seen. Whatever. This Canon is great. But... I'm a Sony Boy... (to my mind, the FX6 is already in end of life. Waiting now for a FX7)
I wouldn't even know what that camera will bring to the table to be honest. Other than more resolution. Those cameras are already so great
@@damiencooper This is the big fight between the big japanese camera brands. There is always something to do to be better. Canon overtakes Sony on details. Sony will overtake Canon on details with the next generation.
You don’t need to drive many house to a location and just blur the background. You can just shoot in your backyard and use bokeh.
Do you own both? Any reason to use both?
How have you found the match?
I had both side by side and thought about selling the Canon for the Sony but decided to keep the C70. No point to have both. I'D rather have two of the same
What made you want to sell the canon for Sony ? Have you tried matching the footage?
Great video! What your grandmother told you, we in Dutch call quite literally “ant-fucking” 😂
Both camera’s are amazing and I feel at this point it is all more about personal preference and how it fits your personal shooting style.
For jack of all trades, will chose FX6. For image quality, will choose C70
No SDI port is not a big deal as a converter will fix that issue.
The image quality on the Canon really blows that Fx6 out the water. It looks so clean and organic. 😊
I’m surprised you aren’t aware that canon sent a cease and desist letter to all third party manufactures to stop making autofocus RF lenses.
I like Sony big reason 3rd party glass. Not that I own FX6 but I know glass can be very expensive.
Mistake on 7:33 you changed info for the Dynamic range??
Any experience or thoughts on budget friendly systems? Say - R8/used R5 vs. fx30/fx3 ? Can’t afford the big boys
Thanks for the your insights. I still can't decide. What do you think would be better for wildlife? The low light ability of the Sony is a big point to consider.
Think of shooting 120fps slog3 at 250 shutter in low light. The Sony can do it. The 12800 upper base ISO is ridiculous in a good way!
Axel, in case you haven't decided yet, the FX6 has 30-second cache recording (i.e. when you hit 'record' it saves whatever happened in the previous thirty seconds), which I would say is essential if you shoot wildlife. Used it a couple of times on deer and owls.
You've been used SWIT HD, but your recommend option list has Feelworld? why?
Very very old list. Will update soon
top of the top! thx
im a sony shooter but the reason i don't get the fx6 is because it's massive compared to the c70
as a Canon C70 owner.. can you think of a way to do Auto-Exposure on the C70? there's no Auto ISO or Auto ND that I'm aware of
You should never want to do auto-ISO or exposure.
Looks like there is SDI in the front of the Canon?? if it's not SDI what is it?
Timecode
Very interesting comparison and conclusion! I thought you were ready to switch last week lol. I have to say I agree with all points except the Vari ND which is clearly superior to mechanical ND and for 90% situations 7 stops is enough. Yet despite the lens situations etc, I would also go for the C70 because I just prefer the color science, the native lenses, the DGO sensor, the codecs (RAW!) and the form factor. That being said I shoot Sony professionally all the time just because as you've said its become an industry standard. But for solo run & gun projects, I much prefer Canon.
I prefer canon over sony in every case but low light performance, sony just isnt that great. I would never use a sony on a job.
WHERE’s their 8k 60p replacement?
I was confused by "Wir wollen ja jetzt nicht mal EU tun" - As a german, I never heard that term before. But i guess your grandma lived in the "Ruhrpott"? The area around Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg? Sounds like that :)
Great Video
No section on stabilisation? Thanks!
Neither has it. Only digital

However, you can't use the full frame RF lenses on the C70 with the speedbooster (or at least not full frame) So it is always hit and miss and keeps being complicated

that means ppl hire ppl who use sony tends to produce low quality DR footage
I would go ronin 4d any day of the week
