The FX6 would be my dream setup, unfortunately I just can't swing it right now. The FX3 is much more affordable and once I built out a rig that I'm happy with, it cost me just as much as the body alone of the FX6 would have cost me. Plus, I only make YT videos, I dont work on set or don't do anything professional so I don't think I'd be able to justify that extra cost. Internal ND sounds like a dream, but IBIS is much more important for me, and it literally means I dont need a gimbal for what I do. Now that Shutter angle is coming to the FX3, I think I'm super happy in my decision to save a buck and go for the cheaper option. I think one day I would still love to get an FX6 v2 or maybe an FX9 but definitely not right now. They're all great cameras tho!
They are the same, the biggest decision factor is probably the IBIS in the FX3 (there is none in the FX6) versus the variable ND in the FX6 (there is none on the FX3). Above that the consideration of the weigh can be important, when using a lot of gimbal, the FX3 wins.
Until recently I would have said the FX6. But over the past year variable ND quality has improved so much. And it's so much easier to use a variable ND than separate NDs with or without a Matt box. I feel having the internal NDs isn't as much of a game changer as it used to be, and not worth the extra $2K-$3K. So I'll go with the FX3. SDI would be nice though
Come on. If it ticks pretty much all the boxes but uses fractions instead of degrees for shutter speed, it's still a cinema camera. Holy crow. If it had 15 stops of dynamic range but only shot rec709 I'd agree with you. But come on. If it's not visible in the footage or prohibiting you from using the camera as a cinema camera in any other way, whatever you dont like about it does not make it less of a cinema camera. It just makes it quirky.
I think y’all confused. Shutter angle and shutter speed are the same thing but they have different units. The shutter speed is how long the sensor is exposed. And same thing for shutter angle. These cameras don’t have a mechanical shutter like film cameras. If they did you wouldn’t be able to change it. And you would still need to change the frame rate with shutter angle

Great video... There is a question that remains as I plan to invest on a FX6 and a FX3: Are they still worthy in 23/24? Or, to put it in another way: For how long will they be worthy? Should I wait for something new in this range or not?
I'm a Canon C70 owner and for many reasons switching to Sony soon. What I keep going back and forth on is if I should start with the fx3 or the fx6. My gut tells me to start with the fx6 and then get the fx3 once the shutter angle update comes out. -- With the SDI ports of the fx6, do you follow the LIFO (Last in, First Out) procedure, or do you just leave it in when swapping batters?
I'm a happy FX6 user and I agree that the image is slightly more natural than the FX3. The FX3 looks a bit more digital. But..the 12800 ISO on the FX3 is way more usable than the 12800 ISO in the FX6. Without Neat video, I can't use the shot. I'm I missing something? Noise reduction on the FX6 is on MID.
A good side comment is a client isn't going to know the difference between either if you fully kit it out. Industry pros, sure, but don't let that be a decision. Kitted out is kitted out.
I have both the fx6 and fx3 HOWEVER i use Final Cut Pro to edit all my videos and don’t plan on switching softwares. The fx6 footage in Final Cut Pro gets compressed so bad that I haven’t even had the chance to fully see the potential the fx6 is capable of. for that reason the fx3 has been my go to camera while the fx6 sadly collects dust 💔

Because i will make movies like romantic drama. So please suggest me a good lens for making audience feel as cinematic experience and suggest good gimble.
I budget wasn’t an issue, definitely both lol. However, I have been going back and forth trying to decide if I want the Fx3 or 30 as an A cam to my my A7iv.
Yoru shadow noise is excellent vs some other tests and raw footage I have seen. I'm curious if you apply any post noise reduction or run at a higher in camera noise reduction, OR if you rate the iso a little differently and over expose by 1-2 stops. My understanding is that the FX6 applies less in camera noise reduction because it dissipates heat much better than the fx3 and since the sensor gets less hot it's less noisy (but this is kinda of a guess, since Sont won't really comment on this).
Thanks Aaron!! I keep my noise reduction on high in camera on the FX6. It seems to work nice. For High base ISO's I always tend to expose a bit hotter. I think the low base is a bit more forgiving. You need more light for the high base for cleaner results in my opinion
@@jonwaldman94 Good to know. I've seen a lot of shooters expose to the right at least 1-2 stops for clean shadows, but good to know your in camera noise reduction is set to high. Do you shoot in cine-ei mode?
@@avdpost For low base you really don't need to imo. As long as you preserve your highlights! I honestly shoot in custom mode and set my profile to s log 3. I will bump the iso between 800 - 1250/1600 before going to the high base 12,800. IMO thats still a cleaner image :)
the FX3 is designed for faster workflow so they alter the image slightly by boosting saturation and sharpness. the FX6 is much more natural, and has better highlight rolloff
No XAVC-S is the only reason preventing me from buying an FX6. It safes sooo much space and in return cost of drives afterwards. In all tests online you see barely a difference between Intra and XAVC-S when you have a lot of movement and punch in the image.
The real difference is in post-production when it comes to editing. XAVC-S I all-intra is much easier to handle for any decent computer, scrubbing in the timeline is absolutely seamless, no need to transcode. Unless editing on a Mac with Apple silicon processor like M1/M2 Max which have dedicated media engine hardware, all-intra is much more suitable for editing. Hope that helps.
That’s not controversial at all imo, the FX6 has a better image unless you’re shooting ProRes Raw - same sensor, but different processing. That’s because the FX3 has very aggressive Noise Reduction and sharpening going on (that you can’t turn off)
It only takes .50 seconds to calculate shutter speed to = 180. Take your frame rate and double it. If you are shootong at 30 frame...just double it and you get 60. (1/60) This takes me .5 seconds to figure out but even smarter guys could do that math even faster. No big deal 😂
It's not really about how much time it takes, but rather how convenient it is to set it once and not really think about it again. It's super easy but when possible I prefer SA vs SS and I feel like Sony really should include it in the FX3(30) since it's part of the cinema line up.
@@kendrickvarela_ I respect that, but I feel like that’s more of a “content creator” issue. If you’re on a set with a AC or even on your own it isn’t that much of an inconvenience to make the switch from one to the other, especially if for the most part you’re sticking with one frame rate.
@@urfriendalquan I agree with it being a content creator problem. With shutter angle you set 180° and literally never have to touch it again Any time you change frame rate it's still 180° Also 1/50 isn't true 180° of 24fps because it's technically 1/48 Sony had to patch the FX3 to add this Or you know, they could have just done shutter angle.....
The only thing is the price. I would 100% get the fX6. $6,000 is a bit steep. If the image is basically the same then maybe the FX3 is for me. But those built in ND filters and shutter angle. I am so torn. Does someone want to buy me one? 😂

Thanks for watching Osman! The future of Sony is exciting for sure. Cheers!
I agree. I have both as well. The FX-3 is great for gimbal work and steady shots handheld. Other than that the FX-6 is better suited for all of my needs for corporate video production.
Thanks! 100%. FX6 is a corporate beast - which is what most of my work is.
@@jonwaldman94 if your looking for steady handheld footage the FX-3 with that image stabilization is your camera. If you’re going to throw a camera on a tripod, the FX-6 all day.
Great video...
There is a question that remains as I plan to invest on a FX6 and a FX3: Are they still worthy in 23/24?
Or, to put it in another way: For how long will they be worthy?
Should I wait for something new in this range or not?
Thank you! 100% yes. I actually have a video coming out soon about this question (particularly the FX6).
@@jonwaldman94 Great!!! I’ll stay tuned 👍🏻
FX6 for NDs alone especially since you're used to them on the c70. Re SDI - I leave It in swapping batteries
Fx3 ❤
I'm a happy FX6 user and I agree that the image is slightly more natural than the FX3. The FX3 looks a bit more digital. But..the 12800 ISO on the FX3 is way more usable than the 12800 ISO in the FX6. Without Neat video, I can't use the shot. I'm I missing something? Noise reduction on the FX6 is on MID.
A good side comment is a client isn't going to know the difference between either if you fully kit it out. Industry pros, sure, but don't let that be a decision. Kitted out is kitted out.
As a FX3 owner I can say: buy the SH2. And if you cant wait for it, take the S5IIx.
Coconut Grove!!
Bro whats your export settings on primere if you use it
For this video I did QuickTime - pro res
@@jonwaldman94 wait why did you choose pro res, did you even shoot pro res
I have both the fx6 and fx3 HOWEVER i use Final Cut Pro to edit all my videos and don’t plan on switching softwares.
The fx6 footage in Final Cut Pro gets compressed so bad that I haven’t even had the chance to fully see the potential the fx6 is capable of. for that reason the fx3 has been my go to camera while the fx6 sadly collects dust 💔
strongly considering the FX3 after this one!
Nice Ben! You will be happy!
Hey my man are you upstate or nyc ? I’m a one man band type filmmaker who would love to make some portfolio work to showcase to brands with people who take this seriously as you do
NYC! What about you?
@@jonwaldman94 upstate Ny but i have family in nyc …you have insta?
Basketball clip makes the cut 🏀
Owning an FX6 usually helps you get booked on gigs with other production companies or TV Networks rather than owning a non-Sony.
🔥🔥🔥 yessir! I hear that
@00:30 spoiler alert ? I clicked on the video to know stuff 😂 you are not spoiling anything
Whoops :)
Hi bro, i buyed Fx3, and I am making a movie using Fx3, so i want to make a movie like cinematic style so which lens are perfect for fx3 and which gimble are good for making movie . Because i will make movies like romantic drama. So please suggest me a good lens for making audience feel as cinematic experience and suggest good gimble.
If I'm not wrong, the fx3 got the firmware update for the shutter angle, can someone confirm this?
Yes! It’s coming finally :)
I heard from loads of directors, it’s better to have two cameras shooting a scene all at once in different angles to save money and time.
There is a ton of truth to that!
I budget wasn’t an issue, definitely both lol. However, I have been going back and forth trying to decide if I want the Fx3 or 30 as an A cam to my my A7iv.
Hahah true! The rolling shutter on the a7iv makes it a no go for me. But the true hybrid nature of it is very intriguing.
IMO thats still a cleaner image :)
but for the most part (90%) I stick to 800 or 12800
@@jonwaldman94 Good to know. I've seen such a mix bag of work with noisy shadows, but yours was very strong work, keep it up!
What about fx30?
I’ve never used it so I can’t compare!
One year later and the FX3 has 180 shutter angle now 😄
Finally!!!
@@jonwaldman94 indeed, I really don’t understand why they couldn’t fix it right away!
the guy in the video looks exactly like me shiii
the FX3 is designed for faster workflow so they alter the image slightly by boosting saturation and sharpness. the FX6 is much more natural, and has better highlight rolloff
Agreed!
No XAVC-S is the only reason preventing me from buying an FX6. It safes sooo much space and in return cost of drives afterwards. In all tests online you see barely a difference between Intra and XAVC-S when you have a lot of movement and punch in the image.
Totally fair!
They just shot a complete sci-fi feature that is releasing in theaters with the fx3. Disney, 20 Century lol
What's the name?
That’s not controversial at all imo, the FX6 has a better image unless you’re shooting ProRes Raw - same sensor, but different processing. That’s because the FX3 has very aggressive Noise Reduction and sharpening going on (that you can’t turn off)
When the movie "The Creator" was filmed with the Sony Fx3 entirely..wonder what everyone thinks now
Yup. It’s an amazing camera!
I still can't believe the FX3 doesn't have shutter angle. Blows my mind
Seriously!
It only takes .50 seconds to calculate shutter speed to = 180. Take your frame rate and double it. If you are shootong at 30 frame...just double it and you get 60. (1/60) This takes me .5 seconds to figure out but even smarter guys could do that math even faster. No big deal 😂
Yeah it’s pretty quick and easy especially since you’re really only shooting 24 fps or 48/60 so you’re really only need to remember two adjustments.
I was AC'ing over the weekend and we had a crispy 12 hour day running 2 Komodos going from interviews to BROLL and while we never had an issue with frame rates and shutter, it's times like that where you really do appreciate it.
Truth be told, the only thing I want is the option to have it so I can use it moments like that.
With shutter angle you set 180° and literally never have to touch it again
Any time you change frame rate it's still 180°
Also 1/50 isn't true 180° of 24fps because it's technically 1/48
Sony had to patch the FX3 to add this
Or you know, they could have just done shutter angle.....
New update fx3 has shutter angle
The only thing is the price. I would 100% get the fX6. $6,000 is a bit steep. If the image is basically the same then maybe the FX3 is for me. But those built in ND filters and shutter angle. I am so torn. Does someone want to buy me one? 😂
I hear you. Depending on what type of work you do, I say its 1000% worth the cost. I think its the best bang for buck cinema camera on the market.
Nobody talks about audio in 120fps on the fx3 vs fx6 lol Sony has been slacking on FX6 updates smh
Good call but honestly I am not using any scratch audio in 120 fps clips.
@@jonwaldman94 I shoot a lot of fishing stuff and sometimes I’ll use my fx3 in 120fps while recording audio from a lav
It’s such a simple thing imo idk who thought the fx6 shouldn’t get that option
@@Dyeheartxfire Ohh gotcha! Yes, I agree. and 120fps is only available in s&q mode in x AVC I I am pretty sure on the fx6. Thats probably why we can't get audio
❤️👍
really hope the next iteration of the fx6 has a downsampled 6k image, that's when I'll make the jump.
What I learned from all of this is that once you start you’re not gonna want to go back 😅
It’s true 🤣
My choice: fx6+fx30.
Interested why you would go fx30 over fx3? (besides cost)
@@jonwaldman94 1: fx30 has a much sharper image. 2: fx6 and fx3 lack s35 options. for me, the combination is more versatile for making different kinds of works.
guys I don't think he can put his finger on it
You almost got it right but not quite… The FX3 is slightly better image quality because it has less noise. Also, I would never buy the FX3 because the viewfinder on the A7S3 is the best EVF I’ve ever seen. If you ever have to manually focus… No problem with the a7S3… I defy you to do it on the FX3 unless you’re 20 years old with perfect vision. Built out the a7S3 With a cage or a gimbal and I’ll take that over the FX6 any day .
none
Then what is your camera of choice?
