Attitude has a banger mid section, I like the energy of that song.
I have to be honest. I love Load and Reload. There are some hidden gems on those albums. Like
Prince charming
Devils Dance.
Where the wild things are
The house jack built
Bleeding me
Outlaw thorn
The unforgiven 2. I love James bluesy voice in that one
And yeah...even the Ronnie song.
There are some great songs on both
@@BecomeTheKnight indeed. Can't wait to see the rest of the video's. I forgot to like the video. Sorry, will do it now
Yeah, Unforgiven 2 is one of my favourites. So good
As a musician I found these albums actually pretty inspiring.
The best songs off load and reload could’ve been combined into one album and it would’ve been a top 3 Metallica album
I remember a James interview where he griped that having that many songs to write lyrics for was too much for him, and that it really showed up in the weaker moments in Reload. That's pretty clear, imo.
I agree with what you said about trend chasing. It just sounded like they wanted a new direction, and were experimenting with new styles to see what worked for them. In the end, we found out what worked for them wasn't what was on Load and Reload. I'm happy those albums exist though, because my life wouldn't be the same without The Outlaw Torn, Ronnie, Mama Said, Fuel, Devil's Dance, or King Nothing, honestly.
Agreed! I love Bleeding Me and Wasting My Hate a lot
There are certainly gems on both of the albums. But like Mike said, unfortunately there’s a lot of turds lol
But The Unforgiven II was the first Metallica song I had ever heard when I was about 10, and before that, I had only heard classic rock and country from my parents. So I had heard nothing like that up to that point, and it ended up opening a whole new world of music for me.
They were necessary albums for growth
Yeah, for me they're two passing passages for them.
And the songs you mentioned are all really cool, I'd like to add Hero Of The Day and The House that Jack Built.
Low Man's Lyric is the most underrated Metallica song.
My guy, you are the reason I picked up a guitar. Other musicians and guitarists specifically have gotten my attention, but you're the one who made me say "Hey Jackass, it's now or never."
Many heartfelt thanks Mike, Rock On!
I'm honored 🙏
This instrumental mix is sick though. Low end is huge, deep and consistent, guitar tone is really smooth. Tones are sick overall....vocal definitely isn't compressed enough though, and they do that awful mono doubling thing I hate.
I 100% agree on the mixing. The mixing on Load and ReLoad are very good. Some of their best imo.
Attitude is probably my favorite song of that entire era aside from Fixxxer.
Bruh
@@inufficentfundz3379 i know. Everyone hates Attitude. I love the riff and love the vibe.
I love attitude and prince charming
I love Fixxxer. It is easily my favorite song off that album
@@pleasuretokill I don’t hate it, I love the energy it has.
This is one of those songs off that record that really sound as if a few guys were just hanging in the garage, having several beers and then just drunkenly jammed on the most basic grooves and power chord changes. Then for some reason, someone said: we GOTTA make it an exercise to build a song out of this.
I love that these vids aren’t just shit-on-the-song fests, and you take the time to point out good ideas, or a good execution, while still keeping the theme of the vid. Great vid as always, keep it up :)
Thanks man. I try to be as honest as i can be.
"Yeah, I hunger
Oh, I hunger
I eat"
Whoa, I didn't know Metallica wrote a song about that time of the month.
Been loving your videos for a long time, it's sad to see how UA-cam is treating your channel.
So here's a question to feed the algorithm :)
have you heard of King Gizzard and the lizard wizard, and if so do you like them / what are your thoughts on them?
I've listened to quite a bit of their stuff on stream and on SSF videos. They are true creatives. I love some stuff and hate others
I’m loving the series so far! Im really curious to see which albums you end up tapping in to!
What are your thoughts on Death Magnetic as a whole?
One of those cringey, bouncy, herky-jerkey 'Dad Rock' riffs Metallica does every now and again. Other examples being 'Bad Seed' and 'Moth Into Flame'. Love Load and Reload though, '2X4' and 'Ronnie' are examples of these groovy riffs done right. Digging the series so far Mike.
I think the worst example of this is 'Am I Savage'. It's just so awkward, it sucks too because the break down is GREAT. 'Dream No More' does it a bit too
Well in their defense they were inspired by those dad rock bands of the 60s and 70s
@@bonesylikesgoodmusic3401 dream no more does it really good, it is a ez unoriginal riff but the song in general is really good, not like Savage, breakdown is GOD tier but the song doesn’t work in general
I have bad news for you...
@@bonesylikesgoodmusic3401 I’m gonna have to disagree with you. Am I savage’s breakdown and main riff are both kick ass to me. I can see how you might think that the main riff is awkward, but after listening to that song for the first several times, it really grew on me as a whole.
Hey, man,
I have been feeling down for the last few weeks and wrote some songs about depression and overall my feelings right now.
I wanted an opinion from a professional musician: Are these types of lyrics overused? Are there already too much songs about depression?
Think of how many love songs we have. There will literally NEVER be anything as overused as that yet we still get good love songs. If you're trying to do something out of the ordinary then sure, but I think it's best to let the music be the differentiator with a message surrounding it.
If it's real, unplagiarized, honest, and then executed with passion.. It's never going to get old or overdone. But if you're worried about sounding like someone else, you probably are.
Remain true to yourself and refine your craft.
Love the content Mike! Keep it up. Do you have any plans to do anything with the listener "interviews" you did last summer?
Sadly no. I don't think i will. I need a better way to capture and organize everything
Great vid man, you ever think you would ever do a video on something Dave Matthews esc?
"I hunger... I hunger... I eat."
Amazing lyrics 🤣😬🤣
Top tier 👌
Is it contentious to say that Load/Reload has some of Metallica’s best mixing? Because I love the mix on these albums. I always find myself chasing the guitar tone on these albums too. Even the worst songs still sound complete and professional to me
I personally can’t stand the drum sound, although it may just be Lars’ playing
I see others giving you a shout-out for the inspiration to pick up the guitar again, you've inspired me as well thank you Mike and keep rocking on
Hey Mike, you know how everyone says that if you take the best songs off of Load and Reload and make 1 album out of it (Loaded?), you'll get a great album? I'd like to see you make a video with such a track list and explain your choices, since a lot of people have a very different view on what Load/Reload songs are good.
It's really not that simple. The time it took to maoe both albums is partly where the hits come from
Both albums have aged brilliantly. As years pass and we distance ourselves from the context of that period that influenced their change in sound (grunge/alternative/nu metal rising and 80s heavy metal declining), we will come to appreciate those albums for what they are: hard rock/heavy metal greatness. In my opinion, their best albums in terms of production, nuance and vocals. Especially Load is higher than Kill' Em All on my Metallica album-tier list.
There isn't a weak point on master of puppets or rode the lightning. There are plenty of weak points on load and reload.
@@timgonzales2891 like ?
@@cliffemall0404 like half of the tracklist sucks
@@jonssgoodlan1433 Again, like ?
@@timgonzales2891 Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are undoubtedly their best albums. That's not the case here. We're talking about how underappreciated Load/Reload are and how greatly they have aged. Even the die-hard metalheads have come to admit that although not as fast, heavy and epic as their predecessors, Load and Reload contain some of the best-composed Metallica songs and showcase the band's musical growth and maturity. I agree that they have weak points and in my opinion, that's because of their length. 14 and 12 songs respectivelly are too much and I can fully understand why someone would get tired listening to them. A collection of the best songs of each, put into one single record would have resulted in a hard rock masterpiece.
As bad as this might be, pretty much everything on load/reload is far more listenable than the worst songs on st anger
Yup
Love this serious and would love to hear you opinion on mastodon.
Hi Mike, just wanted to say that I love your videos and that you introduced me to a lot of awesome bands. \m/
I'll admit that the rhythm of the riffs are pretty cool but the lyrics in the verse are a little weird but it's still kind of a cool song, can't wait to see what other songs you have lined up in this series
It'll be a fun ride
Just found you're channel, very interesting,as you deconstructed these songs,I'm only thinking you're in a band, was in a band or you are a record producer?
Which order would you rank the big 4?
Hey Mike, out of curiosity even though you are not a Megadeth fan, do you have top 3 favorite Megadeth songs and which are they. Best of vibes from Germany 🇩🇪
No
Where do you hide your full-size John Petrucci body pillow?
The same place "academics" who talk about civil war keep their heads
Thx for the live streams
🤘🤘🙏🙏
As another comment on the previous video suggested, you should defenitely do this 10 worst songs thing with other bands to. I would reaaaally be interrested in your 10 worst dream theater songs.
👍👍
i can play the main riff of master of puppets on acoustic and i haven’t been playing for 6 months yet. is that good or nah
I saw that in the SSF Catalog you reacted to Pyramid God by Septicflesh and said you've heard better material from them. I'm curious which album/songs you enjoyed from them. And of course, I enjoy your content, never disappoints 🤘
Martyr
Ey Mike, this may be a boring question, but what do you think of The Bloodhound Gang?
🤷♂️
I feel like with load and reload its a sort of bridge between the old metallica and the more modern stuff (At least by late 90s early 00s standards) and with that in mind I could see how people at the time and even now were upset by a "different sound" between this and Saint Anger compared to the older albums. Personally I like load and reload, but I can agree that it has some dud tracks
Yeah it's a brdige
I'd be quite hard to to this section with Opeth :3 It' be awesome that you could review the thrash band "Evile". They're very similar to Metallica. Great videos btw!
So I asked you And Justice for all or Blackened last time. Any thought to it?
If you ask the same question i will stop replying
If there's anything to say about this song, And most of Load and Reload in general.
They weren't apart of a trend, But they certainly influenced one. A lot of late 90's/early 2000's post-grunge sounds like this, Godsmack's probably the primary example that comes to mind for me.
What are your thoughts on the Rock band 3 doors down
Kinda curious, is there gonna be anything from the first 5 albums
This was posted a year ago?! I remember it was just yesterday when i was waiting for him post these😢
Wonder which songs you'll pick off the first 4 albums, if any
Hey Mike, love the channel, keep up the good work. Im gonna hope there arent gonna be too many load songs on this list cuz i love that album (besides the house that Jack built, that song sucks)
This song is my guilty pleasure, i find the talkbox solo weirdly fun
There's a mix
Load and ReLoad are great albums. Hero of the day, Outlaw thorn, Fuel, Mama said are great tracks, but those should have been a double album or even just one album with fewer songs. just the best. From the Black Album on it feels like no one argued a single thing to them and let them do whatever they wanted.
These are the type of videos I've been waiting for !! Keep this up Mike.
Wait, what is the problem with the Wah guitar sound? What does the "out of context this sounds good" mean?
I'd done a playlist that was a kind of personal ranking of Metallica songs. Just how I felt about them, etc and 'Attitude' wasn't the worst, but it was pretty low on the totem pole, (117 out of 134?). There's some good in the song, but there's also a lot of bad and I usually skip it too. Really interested to see where you go with your next choices, see if the parity continues.
i'm pretty sure there is a song on Angel of Retribution that is built on the same riff as this tune.
After that series you could make a list of 10 best songs by a band you absolutely hate. Like 10 best Nickelback songs. Or you could do it for a band that people love but you don't care for. Like 10 best Death Songs.
That could be fun actually
whaaaat!? this pick surprises me a lot! attitude is such a fun song! i mean i’ll admit it’s kinda dad rock like but what ever it’s so fun! i understand the pick i suppose. the song is definitely longer than it should have been. one thing i’ve always loved about Attitude is the way it REALLY brings out how well Reload was produced. this song sounds absolutely huge, and I can’t help but sing along with the chorus and that “why kill the fever what ever happened to sweat?” is so fucking cool to me. i will say the “just let me kill you for a while” is cringe.
I'll give ya the production. The mixing was very thoughtful
Load/Reload's best moments exhale that dark, brooding air that Iommi breathed into Metal. Sabbath's 'I" is all over Bleeding Me and Fixxxer for example. And with Outlaw Torn in the middle, thats a classic trilogy. Shades of Danzig, Alice in Chains' and Zeppelin build up the best moments ,be it House that Jack Built, Fuel, Where the Wild Things Are. As most will say, in retrospect a single album of the best 12 songs would have been ideal.
Going through some shit right now and this video gave me some much needed laughs. Thanks man
Pretty new subscriber. Like your videos
Checked out your band I like your songs keep it up. 🎧
so if I ask a question now it wil get answered?
If you want to get videos out do a Pink Floyd album tier list
I like reload and load, for me the end of metallica starts with st. Anger unil now
I agreed with you on Purity but I actually like a song like Attitude. To me it's just a good adrenaline song, like Fuel.
I do agree with you on the lyrics though ahah
Fuel is waaaayyyyyyy better. Kinda makes this song feel unnecessary
@@BecomeTheKnight Fuel is great indeed and I do agree that Attitude is unnecessary when you've got Fuel. I still enjoy the song if I forget about the lyrics or the drums 😅
You better answer mike, master or lightning?
For the algorithm: there are some Metallica songs I never managed to listen to all the way through - Fixxxer, Shoot me again, My World, Sweet Amber, all of Lulu except The View (table memes), -Human.. and maybe Attitude, I don’t remember really
Given your stated intention to span the whole catalog, I will take it that this is the song you chose from RELOAD. Having seen roughly half the video, I'm going to make my case for "Attitude" and then let loose on my choice that may not have made the cut.
It took a while for "Attitude" to grow on me. The introduction didn't grab me, it felt overlong (much like "Slither"), and James' voice in many parts sounded just a little too much like the emo whine I was doing all I could to avoid. Considering its surrounding songs ("Where the Wild Things Are," "Prince Charming," "Low Man's Lyric," "Fixxxer") I concede it's the weakest link. Now, I haven't gotten to your opinion in the video, so I don't know if you agree, but it's got *such* a great chorus. It feels like a different, maybe cocky, expression of the meanness in "Prince Charming" to me. In fact, I always felt they were twin songs. That's weird, I know, because they sound nothing alike, but they stick out to me as being of roughly the same quality. After that chorus, the verse riff just... makes sense to me. Some of the pieces aren't great, but the whole is *fantastic*! The end makes them sound like they're kids getting in trouble and just having fun jamming out to this idea they found tasty. Then "Fixxxer" comes in and they have to grow up REAL quick.
In complete contrast, I offer "Better Than You." It won them a Grammy. It's also what I've been saying for years is Metallica's worst song. The criticism you made of the "main riffs" on "Attitude" and "Purify" is one I'd like to make here. The intro is smooth, but it's not worthy of development. That goes into a verse riff that's somehow less inspiring. The lyrics are fine, but the delivery is antithetical in feeling to what they represent. The chorus is uninteresting and does nothing to assure me that the speaker of the line *Is* actually better than I am at anything. I actually *like* the "can't stop this train" music, but that's about the only semi-interesting piece of music in the song. It's got a decent groove, and it's got good tone, which helps when I listen to it, but I really do think it's the closest Metallica ever came to mediocre.
Alrighty this list is getting even better, love the picks so far. I might have to change my opinion from my first comment
I now can't help but think about how many of their 80's songs will be in this series, if any at all. These are good picks so far... I wonder if any of the later ones will be a massive surprise
There may he some surprises
'Attitude' is amazing, just like the rest of the album.
I agree, Reload is a pretty good album.
I can't wait for mike to put a super loved song on here and have to respond to all of the butt hurt people in the first 30 minutes
Next day master of puppets
Monday....
Yes thank you this song sucks!! Mike what’s your favorite song off reload? Mines the Memory Remains and Devils Dance🔥👍
Fuel
Do you prefer load or reload?
My tier list addresses this
Love hearing music discussions, especially as someone who is trying to write and is paralyzed with inexperience.
Practice makes perfect
Ok got one, though the question is not yet fully thought out, but I recently looked at your most popular videos and most of them were your kid react ans stuff. Though I understand your mind set toward reacting to a reaction. But Imma say your videos had a more distinct voice back then, I can hear that voice in some of the videos like that indepth look in bands like Tool and Pink Floyd, all this said, do u think you've found your voice as a UA-camr, and what that is right now
I should re-listen to Load. I haven't listened to it since the 90's. They turned into mid-90's alt-rock sound and while I liked some of it, it just didn't hold me. Still, it has to be better than St. Anger.
Whats your favourite song and album ever?
Baby Shark off of Baby Shark
Load and Reload get too much shit! Although I forgot about this song until you uploaded this video. Can't wait to see the other videos!
It'll be FUN
Hi Mike! Watching from the Philippines.
👋👋
One of the high points for me on this record is prince charming that main riff is just 👌. Also GIMME FUE GIMME FAH GIMME DIBJIJiBSA
Mike I love you man
i feel like some of the greatest songs on load & reload dont get the credit they deserve because of the fact that its metallica. for example until it sleeps would be a shit load more popular if it was a GNR or Alice in Chains song
Until It Sleeps is awesome
Who's your favorite producer of all time?
Pepperidge Farm
Interesting thoughts.
I was driving with a girl (a singer no less) and she wanted me to change the song when the "kill" lyrics came on, she also hated Fuel. Personally, I love both songs but just didn't do it for her.
Hi Mike, just a message of appreciation from Italy🤘🏻
🤘🤘
I like this song but I also agree it’s not necessarily the strongest song on Reload.
Attitude is amazing
The guitar when he says
OH I HUNGER
cheffs kiss
4:34 was my exact reaction the first time I heard this song 😂
I'm surprised this isn't an entire series on Lulu.
Damn, I’ve always loved this song and thought it was a highlight from this album, but wow I never realized how silly a lot of those lyrics are 😂😂 Also yeah that solo is basic as fuck and doesn’t really go anywhere, which apparently is the style Kirk goes for with every solo nowadays. Kirk wrote some of the coolest and most memorable lead parts on the first handful of albums, it’s such a shame how boring he is now and it hurts me as a fan to see how little he tries.
Great idea for a series of videos, totally agree with the sentiment that you need to take the piss from even your favorite bands once and a while. My favorite band is Pantera, and the song Good Friends And a Bottle of Pills is an absolute dumpster fire, it is wholly unpleasant to listen to (not the good kind of unpleasant that they do on Great Southern Trendkill), and doesn’t even sound like a complete song.
Isnt anything before a chorus technically a pre chorus 👀
Load and ReLoad is nostalgic to me
im a real metallica fan because i hate kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and jusice for all, the black album, load, reload, st anger, death magnetic, lulu and hardwired to self destruct. i only listen to the No Life Till Leather demo
I think Load is a better flowing album, but there are some awesome songs on Reload too.
…this is definitely not one of them, but it’s absolutely the definition of “whatever”.
I appreciate the fact that you actually went in depth about the parts of the song that you liked and didn’t like, and why you didn’t like the song overall. A lot of people don’t explain when they don’t actually like the song. I personally like this song a lot, but that’s just my opinion. I like every Metallica song though, so it’s hard for me to criticize any of them. Great bud though!
This song more than anything always sounded like a first draft to me. As in there are a few ideas that are interesting, and I can sort of imagine a cool sound/vibe they were trying to go for but it just never comes across because there’s a bunch of filler parts and other awkward parts and transitions.
I think if they’d taken a couple of these ideas, polished them a bit more and added a few other decent parts to it we could have had a pretty cool song, but as is it’s extremely messy and disjointed, and laughably awkward at times.
I actually enjoy Load and RE-Load and love listening to the songs on my playlist. Load, IMHO, was a good album, just not a good METALLICA album. 2/3 of Load would've been more appreciated if performed by a lesser band (a category I reserve for "Dynasty" by Kiss, and that WOEFULLY misguided Timbaland "Produced" album Chris Cornell recorded!).
On the other hand, RE-Load, for the most part, would've been right at home on the Black Album, if produced in the same manner. As much as i like (not LOVE!) RE-Load, i took it as a step BACKWARDS in their musical evolution. So while I enjoy both of these albums, I consider them both in the lower rungs of their catalog.
Now, St Anger?! Whoo, boy, that's ANOTHER story...
Approved the tidus laugh at the beginning
I feel like "I feast" would be more metal than "I eat." This song is a bit generic perhaps and yes, the overall lyrics are pretty stupid but they're funny at the same time.
I love Attitude. Lovely song. The only Metallica songs I'll put on strictly for my own enjoyment are Load and ReLoad B-Sides.
I like most songs from Load/ReLoad, but this is one I honestly just always forget exists.
Could've swore the pre-chorus said "Feed" instead of eat. Even that would've been better.
I fucking love this series. Can u please continue this with other huge metal bands. I would love to get ur opinion on megadeth 😏
I'm not listening to the entirety of the Megadeth catalog. Sorry
tbh this just made me want to listen to Load and Reload again xD
I agree with everything you said here, I still think Bad Seed is even worse, lol. Take like 4 or so songs out of this album and the rest kicks ass! 🤘
Love Load and Reload wholeheartedly.
