Thank you for your work :) I’m in the process of becoming a minimalist and am trying to become more environmentally conscious. Your content is much appreciated. Greetings from Norway!
Thank you!
I'm not living on my own yet but if possible I kind of wanted to get my family to have less waste than we do now
Same, I'm not living on my own yet niether, but i want my family to have less waste than what we make too (glad that we've been re using plastic bags for dog poop (great for used kitty litter too if anyone reading this has cats) for as long as i can remember)
Unfortunately my mom has been using paper dishes, paper towels and plastic forks, now. And she is getting me into that bad habit of using single waste things that I've mentioned. I feel so bad and guilty about something so easy to stop and I'm repeating my mom's bad habits with those things in the kitchen
I'm so happy that when I put away my grocery shopping now i barely have plastic and other non recyclable thats needs throwing away. I remember when a few years ago, after grocery shopping at the usual supermarket, we would be overwhelmed at how much waste we had just unpacking our shopping, and we hadn't even consumed anything yet! we've never regretted switching to a local organic grocery store where we can buy fresh produce and things in bulk (yes even organic rice! :) ) .I still go to the regular supermarket for some stuff and I've noticed that they have implemented less plastic packaging and i think that's also because more people are more aware of waste nowadays. Thanks for another sweet video ♥
This is a very important video. You are recognizing that not everyone lives in an area with upscale health food stores, or can afford it. Your video is a terrific guide, and is HUGE. It helps that target is also accepts plastic bag and plastic film recycling. I worry that I am "wish cycling" some plastic packaging I bundle in though. Thank you for your super content:)
Thank you Shannon!
Your content is just so soothing. I have 2 adults, a 7 year old and a 1 year old in my house and we all eat so different. I wish it was this easy. Much appreciation to your content 💙
Loved that chocolate bar! What I have noticed that the more I get into the habit of zero waste the more I am keen on doing things right. It's like when you differentiate rubbish, first you start with paper, then you say ok let me put the bottles aside as well, then the plastic and so on until everything goes in the right place. You start understanding that you are actually making a difference for this planet!
This was such a great video and so thoughtful! I always agonize in their produce aisle & try to just buy what's not in the plastic packaging. Just shopping for as much food as I can get that's in less wasteful packaging at Target (Hello: $0.69 cent avocados!) makes up for the extra cost of going to a regular market or the farmers market where I can pick out my produce & put it in a reusable bag. The Ghiradellli chocolate is also packaged in paper with a foil lining ;). Another great thing about Target: I just moved to an area where, unless you own a home, recycling and composting are not yet an option. Target has big recycling bins (for plastic bags, other plastics, cans, bottles, glass, batteries, etc) in all their stores plus a compost bin in the in-store Starbucks, so I just bring it there a few times a week.
Dont know if you have it where you live but in the uk you can get smarties chocolate and it comes in recycled and recyclable paper packaging. Plus is yummy 😋
Not in the US, unfortunately. Smarties here are entirely different (chalky wafers)
Thank you for your kind, calm and thoughtful content, Christine :)
I like how understanding you are for us people who want to go zero waste but couldn't. I'm glad i found this video
Your channel inspires me to take a more sustainable way of living, thanks! :) (I'm still beginning, but I already achieved some new and good habits.)
Aw thank you!
Super cool! since there are a lot of Asian supermarkets in the Bay, it would be cool to see a low waste haul from there too since lots of stuff is in plastic. I imagine the produce would be much easier to find though :)
Ah yes! There is SO much plastic in there - I believe most greens are typically bagged in plastic too (at least at 99 Ranch from my memory). It's unfortunate but I really miss eating some of my ethnic vegetables...considering growing some of my own!
Could you please post some bulk recipes that are healthy? Or like a grocery list and the recipes? Loving your channel:)
I love minimalist baker! I get a lot of inspo from that website (:
Have just found your channel and watched several videos and I enjoyed all the information. The loud music was distracting though. I've been on my minimalist Journey for several years since I retired. It's been a great and rewarding journey.
I love your channel. Simple, cool, substantial.
I LOVE target! Was just there last night. Thanks for doing this!
This video is calming, informative and inspiring ... my favourite combination :)
Thank you!
We are a family of 6. My husband buys huge packages (50 pounds of carrots, potatoes, etc.) at a local market and we reuse plastic bags as garbage bags. It’s the cheapest way to save on food. We have a 1000$-1200$ monthly budget for food and we cook 95% of our meals. We have 4 young children.
Target shopped yesterday, love it there. Thank you.
Here in my country was a great chalenge in doing this zero waste in your grocery😊 thanks for this video God bless
I have made chocolate bark for holiday gifts, by merely melting chocolate discs from the bulk section. Covid has led to plastic bagging, but hoping to get back to using/reusing my own bags from home. I’m sure bulk barn carries them.
Thank you for this!!
Loved this video ❤
For chocolate bars I love Trader Joe’s Fair Trade ones (they also have at Aldi) it’s wrapped in foil and cardboard so all recyclable!
Also those soft plastic bags that are recyclable (carrot bags, bread bags, cereal bags) can be recycled at ANY grocery store that has plastic bag recycling- they also take ziplocks and toilet paper/paper towel roll coverings
I’m working on getting to zero waste. I still have a bunch of extra conditioner and body wash bottles to use up. But it bothers me even more that my apartment complex doesnt have recycling :(
It was actually so interesting to see the prices of food 😮 I am myself from Europe (Eastern side, Lithuania to be exact) and our fruits and veggies are much cheaper, though some things like pasta and canned good are similarly priced. Some differences are that some items like canned tomatoes or sauces we do not have an organic option for which is why they end up being cheaper, but I do hope more organic things pop up in our stores.
As well I am very happy that in my country (and in ones around mine) almost all the veggies and fruits are not wrapped in plastic, only very loose items like kale or other hearby leefy things are packaged.
I've realized that being someone from the States. Healthier stuff is so much more pricy in comparison to EU. I guess it shows the priorities of different gov and cultures. 😔 I wish it was cheaper here too. Due to prices I avoid organic stuff too to save money.
I'm so surprised at the prices, I thought food was expensive in Sweden compared to most countries, but for example a package of 12 organic eggs are considered expensive here if they are above $4-5. Thanks for the video, great content as always :)
Those eggs are really expensive 😬😬😬💸💸💸💸
I hope you do more videos like these❤️❤️
Love your channel ❤️ i also am wondering of snacks to purchase in more sustainable packaging.. or I need to learn how to make my own potato chips 😂
Omg yes I second this 😂
It always frustrates me when glass jars sometimes have those transparent plastic seals over them. Such a waste.
Tamper evidence is so important in the packaging industry - stories of people switching out medication from original packaging when it didn't exist...which is crazy! Hope things continue to change for the better though. (:
@@simplybychristine that's good to know! At least it's for a good reason.
I’m so amazed at how much crap people throw away.
That's really interesting information
So are you vegetarian then and not plant base?
Thanks for the tips.
Thank you! I also feel guilty when I buy in plastic bags. But I try my best. I was surprised about one thing: I thought minimalists were mandatory vegans! But it just goes together sometimes, I guess.
Well done, shopping zero or even low waste at a regular supermarket is not easy. I live in Portugal and the closest supermarket to my home, about 300m usually has a lot of fresh produce unpackaged 👍. But it's impossible to buy any rice that is not in plastic and only one brand of pasta comes in cardboard.🙄🤷 I have a bulk store about 3 km from my house, it's small but nice. I asked them why they don't sell rice, sugar and flour pakage free? It's illegal to do so. It's an old law which has not been changed, but if you are caught selling those products package free you get a hefty fine. I do love their nut butter machine 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰, my favourite is the almond and chocolate nib one 🤤🤤🤤
I’m not sure why I thought those aluminum wrappers weren’t recyclable… thanks for sharing! I work at target and while it’s sad to see all the packaging on the shelves, it’s good to know we have a ton of measures in place to properly manage all the waste on the back end
Several sorting centers won't separate pieces of aluminum that are too small. They often recommend cleaning it and keeping it until you have a large ball.
Spot on! (:
I love this video! I think the “zero waste” title is a bit misleading though. Everything has some waste. I think it would be more helpful to people if you had titled it low waste. Again. Thank you so much for this video!!
Totally understand! Unfortunately youtube doesn't do well with low waste in titles of videos, and I usually need to use the term zero waste for searchability.
It’s just plastic free, not really zero waste.
This is the best you can do when you don't have many options.
👍👍👍💕💕💕💯💯💯💅💅💅
its not technically 'zero waste' if it goes in a recycling bin but i guess if you can reuse it in your household, thats okay.
:)
I believe the title of the video should be changed, as it is misleading. The sauces and cans have stickers on them and veggies in plastic bags. Should be named "minimalist shopping", as there is a lot of waste.
Totally understand! Unfortunately youtube doesn't do well with low waste in titles of videos, and I usually need to use the term zero waste for searchability.
I thought you were vegan!
I am not due to medical reasons but try my best to promote plant based eating!
We shouldn't pick people apart for not being perfectly vegan or vegetarian. Let's uplift everyone who is trying their best. It's the only way we can get large amounts of people to join the cause. This kind of critisizm is why people don't want to join the vegan community.
@@jessicasantos6690 What criticism are you talking about? I just assumed Christine was vegan due to some recipes I've seen in her channel and the fact the zero waste people often are.
@@marcelodecarvalho6030 The only thing I saw that wasn't vegan were the eggs, but that is an ethical company that treats their chickens well. It's more important to focus on the footprint of each item than if it is technically "vegan" or not.
For example, Driscoll's is a terrible company who pay their workers next to nothing. It's vegan though.
The eggs Christine bought are from chickens who are treated well and fed well. Plus Driscoll's berries come in plastic, eggs come in cardboard. So what's the more sustainable option here? It's not the vegan option. You're focusing on the wrong thing.
@@jessicasantos6690 Male chicks still die and the hems are still being tortured, so being treated "well" doesn't really matter. Again, if you cannot be vegan for health reasons, that is fine, but your entire post just reads like a big coping mechanism for justifying your less than ethical choices.
Great work! I love it! Thank you Christine!
Can we add the animals and going plant-based in your videos? You already are ovo-lacto vegetarian which is great. It has an immediete and significant impact on our carbon emissions on this planet seeing as a methane molecule is equivalent to ~23 CO2 molecules? Animal welfare === kindness === karma === when we give love we receive love?
