Definitely a more personal video for me, I hope it resonates with some of you. Leaving home was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I'm glad I did because it made me stronger, more independent, and allowed me to realise what being happy meant. Happiness is perspective, but it also resides within yourself and those you have around you - whether they are here physically or not. Thanks for sharing such a personal video man! As a person who got to know you during your uni years, I had NO idea some of this stuff was going through your head. So glad to have you as a friend bro! 👊🏼
Hey Matt, Don't know if youll see this but. Your video has inspired me a lot as I came from a similar scenario to you. I moved to the UK from Hong Kong around 2 years ago now and to say im adapted is an understatement. My life has changed forever and I constantly watch videos of food videos in Hong Kong and miss my family constantly. The fear of racial discrimination and such also sit in the back of my head but seems to be less and less concerning now. I hope you have a good day and you respond
Thanks for sharing your honest experience. I was in a similar position. Went to Uni in US for Bachelor's in Bio and Pre-med; found myself devastated for a long time since I lived in a joint family for 18 years & went straight abroad alone. Everything was new and a step out of comfort zone. But I can confirm it was one of the best decisions of my life. I went from US to UK for masters and completed it with Merit and now I'm working in my home country to contribute to its medical research, until I get a PhD position. Thanks again brother. Keep going, God bless you 🙏.
Very good sharing to let people know the challenges living in UK, the attitude to prepare and most importantly , to find who you are, what you want to be eventually
Thank you for sharing this. When people share some part of their personal challenges instead of just saying: i did it; it makes the journey appear human and doable.
SO MANY QUOTABLE QUOTES IN THIS VIDEO! SO FREAKING INSPIRING, MATT! THANK YOU for motivating me to strive through the challenges right now to live my best life! "The most worthwhile things are always the hardest... Hey! I'm so glad the video resonated with you 😊😊was a really difficult time for me and I can only hope that sharing my experiences can make someone else's a little better/easier. Whatever you're going through, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel!
Takes a lot of courage to say what we've all been feeling/have felt before coming from abroad! Love the positivity coming from you, keep it up Matt! Will always have your back dude :)
Thanks man, I just wanted to talk about an experience that was really important to me to help others going through the same thing. I really appreciate your support man thanks 😊
Wow, you speak great English, much better than I. Did you study in int'l schools when you were in HK? I got my PhD from Cambridge and have lived in the US for more than two decades. Unfortunately I still speak English with a strong HK accent.
Thank you for making this video! I hope I can be like you in a few months time, at ease and happy in my new surroundings like you. I've left Hong Kong last September and felt terribly homesick in the first weeks. Hey thank you so much! That was certainly the intention when I wanted to make this video, I wanted to speak in a way that my younger self would want to see. Hey Kiran, I'm glad you could relate to this a little and I would say, if you have the opportunity to go abroad to study you should definitely do it! It might seem really intimidating at first but you'll learn lots and it'll be a great experience 😊 All the best!
I hear a lot of similar views. Is the opportunity there or the future potential worth taking the leap of faith. Naturally the initial adjustment will be difficult, people are resistant to change and moving is consider by many a bad experience. Community does work. Life is what you make it to be, and finding your core competencies will make you stronger. I hope you all find a suitable fit in work, in location and for your families
I am a 30-yr old Research Engineer considering to move to the UK from Hong Kong. I have been to both Canada and Singapore for my Education since the age of 14. I am pretty accustomed to a life living overseas. My advice to you from someone who is an Industrial Engineer at Hong Kong is...don't come back to Hong Kong. The climate here has changed tremendously since my first internship here in 2011. We are becoming much more reliant on Chinese technology, and this trend has already started long before the sociopolitical (e.g. umbrella) movements. Due to the pandemic, we are also getting less foreigners interested in working here due to the lack of mobility. I can see the trend of de-globalization pretty clearly from someone who is working in industry. These are my reasons. Don't come back.
@@wassim-bz7wj Being a doctor means you're at the top of your social ladder in Hong Kong. With the environment nowadays, HK is actually losing their global competitiveness. I would bet my money on Singapore, as it is an English speaking country. Hong Kong is just another Chinese city. If you don't speak Chinese, it's going to cause many problems if you're personally dealing with patients. This is just my personal take. Go consult actual doctors working in HK.
@@wassim-bz7wj Information is power. You have to gather more information from different people. Housing price is extremely high here, and the first thing you will notice is the rent. I can live in Canada, USA and UK with 25 - 33% less in Cost. From my observation, most doctors here are locals usually educated from US, UK, Australia and Canada.

For me, it was so exciting. So many radio stations, and the DJs were hilarious. So many newspapers were full of wisdom. So many restaurants and coffee shops, each has its charm. So many supermarkets and the rolls of food were so colourful (when you next visit the supermarket, the same batch of food with a new expiry date). So many good libraries readily present you the knowledge of the past and future. So many parks to walk and get things in your mind sorted out. Just the walk itself was so spiritually calming. So many politicians and they were so argumentative. Life was never boring in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is safe too. If something happens to you, everyone will rush to you, and an ambulance will arrive quickly. When you see a doctor, they pay full attention to every sign you experience. Just be grateful you are in one of the most civilised societies. Just embrace their values, and you will one day realise you will become part of them. You will be thrilled when the nation has made some achievements. You will cry and mourn with everyone when there is a disaster. Whatever your religion might be, you will find comfort in their worship and prayers. After some years, you'll find your soul British.
let's hope England is not rampant racism like here in the USA. I live here in San Francisco since 1984, still yellow-skinned faced so much racism every frigging day!!!

For someone who hate racism, your comments are really racist. I think you need to change your attitude, might be you mistake dislike with your attitude and blame that on racism?
@@midasgold4223 my bad. just kind of sick and tired of all the racism in the US. from grade school to adulthood to the workplace, same sht racism. If i go back to China, 93% is the same race, no mas white privillege. even the african americans and hispanics bullies us, just too much to take in merica.
i understand how you feel being away from home..i was homesick in London & i left UK after completing my few years of studies and was grateful for being employed by Dutch in my home country..
The resentment came from your parents, not the new country. Most Chinese seem to have this and are super rude in new countries for that reason. Elkhart Tolle would call this a ‘collective pain body’ from a traumatic history. “I carry my families hearts and feelings”. What you need to do is forgive your parents and your culture for teaching you wrong and be ‘born again’ as Christians say, which Hindus call ‘Samsara’. It sounds like you have mostly done that, which is great, as most people don’t. I had to encounter a very painful ego death in order to have this realisation. The last thing is letting go of all resentment handed down from your family (which you first need to see that they handed it down to you). Then you can be fully happy.
It's crazy. The more you learn about the world, the more I feel more Chinese. We got harassed and bullied all the time from grade school to the workplace, the blacks, the whites, the hispanics, you name it all. There's nothing to brag the white culture. I have to act like a white boy all the time at the workplace to fit in. I can't wait to move back to Huadu Guangzhou China to retire. Sick and tire all the racism in the US. I know Chinese people like me ain't inferior to the white ghost for sure.

Living in the US with all the crime and anti-Asian violence is moving to western countries worth it? My family and I live in NYC with the thought we will be attacked in the subways for being Asian and wonder is this the same fear as you had when you lived in HK. I would welcome living in a nanny state if I feel protected from the violence including gun violence that is prevalence here.
If one have chosen to leave 'home' there's choices made, then stop lamenting. Besides, HK do not believe in having foreign doctors no? and that UK while accepting the 'import', why are there any complains about being with "strangers" who's the strangers? really, being man is not posting and whining, is making life tick and beat... unless one thinks back HK being in the protesting stage of destructing what's a beautiful and successful city.

Basically you didn't say anything why its great. I understand people from Asia think that the west is a utopia, but in reality it isn't.
It really isn’t.
I want to work as a doctor in Hong kong , is hong kong a good place for international doctors ? ( i am from algeria .)
Yes i know i have to learn the language to understand peoples
I am not westner and i dont hate chinese what problemes that you think i will face ?
@@wassim-bz7wj Information is power. You have to gather more information from different people. Housing price is extremely high here, and the first thing you will notice is the rent. I can live in Canada, USA and UK with 25 - 33% less in Cost. From my observation, most doctors here are locals usually educated from US, UK, Australia and Canada.
🥰
u deserves all yr. misfortune... 2019 was the defining moment for hk with fire n brimestone...disrupting daily life n u r the cause of it... so u quit n run away... with yr. tail behind yr. back....being an exile i so hard to swallow.

Kids in Hong Kong growing up tend to be a little spoil by their parents. It’s good that he moved overseas to learn to be independent
dude, you need to learn sing a glory to the queen. your life will be much better 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
I live here in San Francisco since 1984, still yellow-skinned faced so much racism every frigging day!!!
unfortunately it is
@@Cecilia- I'm sure there is!!! when these CCP haters like Matt Lee face some racism in England, he will definitely come to embrace and love of the great work of CCP. Yang-Blinken summit in Alaska is the first time I feel so much pride being Chinese. You Anglo-Saxons ain't better than us, not 30 years ago, definitely not right now. - Yang Jiechi. These HK haters really are so annoying.
how come matt lee looks so dark?? I'm Cantonese too, but i ain't dark like him. in the west, you want to look pale and white. he is too dark to blend in with the anglo saxons
If i go back to China, 93% is the same race, no mas white privillege. even the african americans and hispanics bullies us, just too much to take in merica.
did you study at an international school in Hong Kong ? very good English
May I just say that accent is mint 👌👌
i understand how you feel being away from home..i was homesick in London & i left UK after completing my few years of studies and was grateful for being employed by Dutch in my home country..
Love ❤️ fc
I was wondering why your English sounds pretty British? cause you are Chinese from HK
Tbh it’s not British English, more like a south Asian English accent. 😂
You speak south East Asian English with no Hong Kong accent your English isn’t British nor North American
Not many people think that and ignore the arseholes that do.

Hey Matt, quite profound what you said in this video, conveyed with authenticity and sincerity. 🎩 tip to you from a fellow HKer.
Thanks for your kind words, and really glad I was able to share my perspective with others. Great to find another HKer on here!
You can say farewell to HK your home you cannot go back to HK even you are dead my friend
Leaving Hong Kong for good ?
Leaving Hong Kong the good !
Living in the US with all the crime and anti-Asian violence is moving to western countries worth it? My family and I live in NYC with the thought we will be attacked in the subways for being Asian and wonder is this the same fear as you had when you lived in HK. I would welcome living in a nanny state if I feel protected from the violence including gun violence that is prevalence here.
move to texas/arizona or california
If one have chosen to leave 'home' there's choices made, then stop lamenting. Besides, HK do not believe in having foreign doctors no? and that UK while accepting the 'import', why are there any complains about being with "strangers" who's the strangers? really, being man is not posting and whining, is making life tick and beat... unless one thinks back HK being in the protesting stage of destructing what's a beautiful and successful city.
